they have confirmed they have the police. lukas: 47-year-old elias wanatee is suspected of stabbing death of 50-year-old vernon mace. police were asking for a warrant to charge wanatee with 2nd degree murder. agagn, just confirird moments ago, police say they y have h h in custody nono authorities s y they were called out to the 1900 block of west 1st street in sioux city ... just after 2 this morning . the victim was taken to mercy medical center by a private party before officers arrived. he was treated for several stab wounds but died due to his injuries ... authorities say they believe that wantatee knew the victim and that this was not a random crime. abc9 has learned that wantatee was currently out on bond for an assault in which he brandished a machete in a walmart parking lot. . a bench warrent wawaissued for his

this month after he failed to appear in courur again ... is being considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information on wanatee's whereabouts is being asked to call authorities immediately. lukas a sioux city woman is facing several charges after firing a weapon during an argument outside a home monday evening. court documents say michelle myers was arguing with the residents of a home on 16th street around 10 p-m monday night... when she fired a round into the pavement after being denied enterance to the home ...the bullet caused blacktop to spray up and strike a bystander. myers s charged with going armed with intent and reckless u u of a firearm ... her bond was set at 25-thousanan dollars lukas: south dakota is set to become the first state in the country to enact a law requiring transgender students to use bathroom facilities that match thier biological sex.

approved a bill tuesday that had already passed though the state house. it would require public school students to use bathrooms that correspond to their birth- assigned gender -- not the gender they identify with. the same rule would apply to locker rooms and showers. the bill now goes to governor dennis daugaard ... who is expected to sign it. but some transgender rights activists are telling him... "talk to the people you're affecting." "(ashley joubert- gaddis, the centnt fofoequality): "i think it's important f f governor dauauard to remembebeas he stands behind his statement that he has can not recall meeting a transgender person, that these bills are about real people and he responsibility to sit the people who actually vote for him to hear their "( lewis/transgender student) most of my male to a lot say 'i don't bathroom with me.' i you have to go to the bathroom, you go to the bathroom. it shouldn't be a big opponents of the bill say it could create situations for students.

first time in high school when i had to disrobe in front of a group of guys and it was a little disconcerting. how would you feel walking into any sort of facility that you want in the state of south dakota and you had to use the bathroom and there is a guy in n ere?" the bill still allows transgender students to request what it calls "reasonable accommodation" from their schools. supporters say it matches better with the federal law requiring equality among sexes in public education lukas: udents at a local elementary school are taking action against bullying with the help of some fun activities. the east middle school positive spartians helped teach students at spalding park elementary school the effects of bullying. during this quarters assembly ... students were able to learn about the dangers of spreading rumors and lies about fellow classmates. the goal of the assembly is to teach students to be buddies not bullies. teachers and staff at the school have seen improvements in their students and love to see them take an active role in preventing bullying. mi moore - princil at spalding rk elementary "it's a good reminder because when we do

more intrinsic and it become more ingrained that they realize that. having it once a year is just not enough" the school will continue the assemblies in hopes to reach as many students as possible. lukas: iowa lawmakers are considering a bill that would change iowa's texting and driving law. right now texting while driving is considered a secondary offense... meaning officers can't pull you over for texting unless they see you breaking another law ... the new bill would make texting while driving a primary offense ... the sponsor of the legislation, senator tod bowman, says its a way to t tghen up iowa's distracted driving laws. " bowman 5:32:18 there's people that think itould provide poce another reon to pull you over, it does! when you're doing soething harmful, it does give them another reason to pull you over but a legitimate reason to pull them over." the bill passed in the senate but bowman says the speaker of the house hasn't expressed interest in taking it up for debate.

proposing a new bill to help protect student athletes from concussions while playing collision sports. the bill would require home teams at high school varsity games to provide a licensed trainer to assess concussions and other injuries. varsity sporting events include, football, wrestling ... plus girls and boys soccer. the estimated cost of getting trainers would be between two and five thousand dollars annually. . some local schools already struggle to have trainers present coistently and are nosure the bill ia feasible option. "when we're able to, we try to have a trainer for alll our home events but it's difficult. the cost is high, the availability of certified people that can come down and take care of our athletes and our opponents athletes, they're hard to find. " right now-- about half of the schools in iowa provide some coverage for athletic trainers or other professionals at sporting events. we will have more on this bill... lukas: lt governor kim reynolds made a few stops in sioux city as a part of

yesterday... loess hills is currently in their second year of the stem program. each student from second through fifth grade has their own laptop for class, even the younger ones use tablets both teachers and the principal agree that skills in proem solving and processing algorithms coding will take far . "any free time a child might have here at automatically reach programming programs and they like to create code" says john beeck, principal at loess hills elementary, "it's really fun!" says students. lukas welcome back we want to update you on our top story this morning. there was a fatal stabbing on west 1st early this morning... and now, police do have a suspect in custody. this is video of 47-year-old elias wanatee being brough into the police station. he is suspected of stabbingeath of 50-year-old vernon mace. police have indicated that they plan to charge wanatee with 2nd degree murder. again, just confirmed moments ago, police say they have him in custody now. authorities say they were called out to the 1900 block of west 1st street in sioux city ... just after 2 this morning . the victim was taken to mercy medical center by a private party before officers arrived. he was treated for several stab wounds but died due to his injuries ... authorities say they believe that

words: 'thank you' th came from a note given to the kansas state patrol by one special boy. reporter michael schwanke has the story. " it was a scene no mother wants to pull up to. "all i saw first was cop cars." last tuesday, on the gym floor at this school in wakeeney was second grader gage hilmes. "it's a scary scene to see and then you see the ambulance." during p.e. class...gage fell down and was unresponsive. as his mother elizabeth arrived...they were loading him into the ambulance. "one of the ems ladies that was on there said just jump in and i don't remember if i shut my car off." fast forward to this week.
