the event... prprented by the smithsonian and hosted by president barack obama... celebrated the iconic music man from georgia. the celebration is the 16th and final music tribute program to take place at the white house during the obama administration. the president took the podium to speak about the performer. "(president obama (no font needed): "tonight's a little bitter sweet because this marks our final in performance at the white house. i will not be singing, but for our last one it is fitting that we pay tribute to one of our favorites and one of the most brilliant and influential musicians of our times, the late, great genius himself, mr. ray charles." the program included performances by usher, leon bridges, anthony

"the smithsonian salutes ray charles: in performance at the white house" will air this friday at 8 p-m central time... on p-b-s stations across the country lukas: there's a new line of action figures... and it's all about girl power... literally. d-c comics is releasing a new line of female superheroes. reporter mary moloney has more "(friend): "to be a super hero you need a crime. there's a car chase on the 112 freeway." lukas: film makers from all over the country are gathering in sioux city... for the 12th annual siouxland film festival. the festival officially kicked off last night. about 100 movie goers got the chance to check out a few of the finalists films at wit community college's cargil auditorium. the event has expanded over recent years to a 4 day gala with the addition of short documentary films this year each year introducing a different style of film competition. "we did watch 126 films and we have narrowed it down to 40 films for the four nights. so you can see there's a growing interest, the first time we had about 30 films." says board memeber margo chesebro. viewers have the opportunity to vote on their favorite film through saturday. tickets are 6 dollars for adults and 3 dollars for students with the

important night with his sister. a-j spad's sister rebekah... was diagnosed with a deadly disease several years ago. after a bone marrow transplant failed... the family decided to forgo any further treatment. reporter bridget bennett has more on how a-j is making sure his sister enjoys every moment "(stephanie spader/mom) "what girl doesn't like to get all dressed up and beautiful." this valentine's day, 10-year-old rebekah spader was transformed into a princess. when compared to the salary of a county supervisor, who receives anywhere from 32 to 40 grand a year, the 10 to 15 thousand earned by the city council averages out to less than minimum wage. about 5-45 an hour on a thirty hour week. even council members who were initially against the increase think it could help the future of the city council "if the salary increase incentivizes people, uh others interested, good, hopefully young people interested in city government and more importantly interested in the city and have invested commitment to the city, then so be it." the pay increase would not affect current members of the council. lukas: transgender restrooms are getting alot of attention in south dakota.... and now an iowa high school says it's ioffering two gender-neutral restrooms... saying it's an effort to support the school's l-g- b-t community. officials at the school say the restrooms are part of a movement to make students and staff members alike ... feel more accepted. reporter emmy victor has more.

million dollars in damages in a lawsuit over its talcum powder. the suit, brought by the family of jackie fox, alleges thatox died of ovarian cancer caused by the company's product. plaintiffs in the case argued that johnson and johnson was aware of and neglected the dangers its talcum powder presented. this is the first award of damages by a u-s jury over similar claims - the company is appealing and they also released a statement saying it stands by the safety of its talcum powder. lukas: february is national heart and, if you, or a loved one, have signs of a heart you should call 9-1-1 or go to the e-r immediately. abc9 news anchor jenna rehnstrom has more about the system in place to save your life... all in this week's matters. as soon as siouxland paramedics get to a heart attack patient, the life-saving measures are put in place immediately. john says, "we automatically do these four out here to start with." john jorgensen has been using

protocol implemented by the american heart association for several years. he also teaches rural, volunteer ambulence squads to do the same. it's part of an initiative called mission: lifeline. the idea is to close the gaps that lead to slower and less effective patient care. john says, "the key is to save time, because time is muscle and so that's our goal throughout this whole process is to save the time." while still in the field, paramedics do an ekg, so a heart attack can be diagnosed in the field. the results are sent to doctors at a local hospital, so they can know almost immediately what situation to prepare for. dr. jerome pierson says, "we're able to pull these ekg's up and look at them and it tells us if a heart attack is occuring, is it normal? is there something else going on that we need to identify." mercy heart center director dr. jerome pierson says the goal is to have a

underway within 90 minutes. in a smaller community like sioux city, that can happen even faster. dr. pierson says, "i lot of times, we don't even take them off the gurney from the ambulence, [we] take them right up to the catherization labratory, onto the table and go. a lot of times we can have these arteries within 20 minutes of them entering our emergency rooms." doctors, and emt's, know it's that early intervention that saves lives... dr. pierson says, "we know that greatly reduces the amount of heart damage that's being done." and mission: lifeline gets everyone one the same page when it comes to the best care for you or a loved one. lukas: the leona m. and harry b. helmsley charitable trust is the lead funder of this initiative... mercy medical center recently got a check for 105-thousand dollars to help implement mission: lifeline. statewide... about 4 and a half million dollars have been given to hospitals and ems squads. but, each piece of equipment to perform and send

about $30,000 ... the hope is to eventually equip all 900 servies in iowa with the same technology. lukas: although approved by the federal government this week..... iowa's privatized medicaid plan doesnt begin until april first. but that isn't helping those who still have questions about their service and coverage. and as our bria bell found out includes parents of children who attend therapy for developemntal needs .. " the bad things is everyone knows the same amount of information right now which is basically nothing," says hindman. many parents who's children visit therapy station for developmental issues are covered by medicaid, but with the states new updates their coverage could change. the federal government extended iowa's new medicaid rollout to april first. but more time, means more

"well the biggest thing that it means honestly is more questions. there has been a shortage of information, not only for providers, but also for parents," says reuter. according to brooke hinderman, a therapist for therapy station, parents are so confused they're turning to anyone and everyone who might have answers. "so they're just looking for simple answers like, 'is my speech therapy?' or "how many or many visits are they going to get?' you know,'will my child's services get covered? will their medication be covered?' it's just a bunch of questions and no answers as of right now," says hindman. as iowa's medicaid update nears, both parents and businesses like the therapy center are sitting back and hoping for the best "for me, i think that the hard part is the parts that are unknown and not

on the front lines of a rally at the iowa capitol fighting against the medicaid change. culver actually organizing this "medicaid rally" day .... coming out of the political woodwork after years out of politics. culver lost a re- election bid to terry branstad in 2010. lukas: it's that time of year, as you're driving you may hit one or twelve pesky potholes, city crews are working to fill holes as fast as they open up. we caught up with them while they were repairing roads. "i've got a couple streets, kings highway is about the worst on the route. looks like a minefield but you know you just got to take it slow and watch out that you don't fall in to deep." says postal driver larry mccaslen. nats "oh, this time of year it just varies on the weather. lately we've been busy probably doing two to three hundred holes a day." says crew leader kevin huebner. "we know drivers aren't the most patient of people for these things to get done, but do you think they're glad to

"you get the occasional one that wants to run you over and get you out of the way." says huebner. nats "well as many of them as i've seen around they're doing a good job. they've got a limited crew so it'll get there. hopefully soon then later yeah that's always good." says mccaslen. nats "just this week we've probably used, i mean each trailer goes through three ton a day and today we filled up again and the night crews been doing it too, so we've probably been going through close to 10 ton a day." says huebner. "timetable, how long till you think you get done? roads completed?" "oh, i would say atleast a couple months if that." says huebner. lukas: if you know of a pot hole that needs tending to
