"we had our first film submission from new zealand." tim: good evening and thank you for joining us tonight im tim seaman jenna: and im jenna rehnstrom a new bill passed by the iowa senate is giving some iowa families new hope. tim: the bill called... the right to try, gives terminally ill patients the opportunity to try non-fda approved medical alternatives. abab's jess plue has more on what this legislation would mean. jess: that's right tim and jenna...imagine being told by your doctor that you have a shorted timeline to

that diagnosis and add the possibility of a treatment haulting or reversing your condition but not having the right to access it because it has yet to be f-d-a a approved. well..this obstacle was partially removed tuesday withhe passing of t right to try bill. "the bill grants terminally ill iowan patients the oppertunity to explore non-fda approved alternatives with the patient simply granting consent beforehand. " it gives patients in the sunset of their treatments another oppertunity. i mean is this a cure-all drug? no. is it an extension of life-type oppertunity? yes. another year, maybe another three to five years to extend your lifif it gives people hope, s ss senator. unanimously passed in the senate and is now headed to the approval. those dealing with terminally illness say this is a big win for the medical community. "it just makes sense to try it so people with terminal illnesses, not just huntington's disease, can have the right to try something that's not approved yet by the fda but has passed the safety testing of clinical trials," says nicki oss, nicki and her husband todd have been together for

years. todd was diagnosed with huntington's disease...a neurological disease that attacks the brain causing problems with muscle coordination, cognitive decline and psychiatric problems. nicki helped found the shepherds gift non- profit organization that helps in providing education and funding of research towadrs a cure. using the g-m-1 ganglioside molecule...a molecule found in all mammals..the reseach is done using a genetic disorder in sheep that overproduce the gm1 molecule....hence the name shepherd's gift. while the research is still in clinical stages, those like nicki and todd are anxious to start human trials if it means slowing the disease. "this treatment may not be in time for us, it may not be in time for some families but if we have the oppertunity to try it, it's worth it, and if it's something that can help other people that are in similar situations," says nicki oss. jess: the shepherd's gift raised over 19-thousand dollars last fall with a golf outing fundraiser..a fundraiser that

more infomation on the iowa public health's website. tim: 1st and for only since the mid 80's... anglers on the missouri and big sioux will be able to try their hand at reeling in a paddlefish. jenna: because of dwindling fish numbers due to habitat loss... just the second since 19-86... abc9's-- christina gri-hall-va went missouri today more (nats of water splashing) paddlefish-- one of the largest freshwater fish in north america-- and found right here-- in the missouri and big sioux rivers. "there a p ptty neat fish, , eir a planktavor, they use their bill or eir rostrum to try and direct the uh flow of small animals called zooplanktun and similar small fish is what they feed on." now-- siouxland prepares for its second season of paddlefishing-- after it had been cancelled since 1986. i got the chance to head out on the missouri river with members from the d-n-r-- and see how their tagging process works. waterfall band and it says right on it iowa dnr, onawu iowa and its got a number on it ." if you catch a paddlefish with one of these-- call that number-- report the date and location of capture-- as well as the length of the fish. be sure to measure from the front of the eye to the fork of the tail. all this to help state fisheries agenes better understand and manage populations. "we'll go back a a uh address ththgs and go over some changes that we might want to have for 2017." also-- if you catch a paddlefish between 35-45 inches long-- toss it back-- the fish withinthis slot limit-- protect the breeding stock. anglers can but these personal tags online-- for their one fish that they're allowed to keep for the season. christensen says that things arar looking up for theseason this year o the missouri river. "it's kind of a more of a hunt and pack or look for the population of fish who are there and during the high water periods those fish are going to be coming and going. right now, we're actually higher than we were last year, so with the
