hundreds of thousands in las vegas filled the streets. more than a million others crowded into new york's times square for watch the ball drop at midnight. other cities around the world marked the new year under a terror threat. don champion is here in new york with more on that. >> reporter: good morning. places like germany and belgium, the threat of terrorism led to cancelled events and even warnings for people to avoid large gather is. german germans ushered in 2016 under close watch. in munich, a different story. people there were told to stay away from two of the city's train stations because of a serious and emimminent threat by isis bombers. in brussels the official party

at the address. it's really the place to be. >> reporter: the fire broke out two hours before midnight. officials rushed to evacuate the skyscraper as flames ripped through the building, consuming at least 20 floors in a matter of minutes. but some residents say the alarm didn't sound right away. >> the alarm went off when the building was on fire. to contain the blaze. crowds could hear several explosions. >> i just heard a big bang. >> reporter: official say the hotel's springklers helped diffuse the fire. chris martinez, cbs news. when president obama returns to washington next week, he has new plans for action on gun control. the president will is expected to sign a bill.
