the arms of three police waiting below. you make me feel like i'm alive again >> and the road to the super bowl is paved with carpool karaoke, with chris martin riding shotgun, and james corden gets a preview of sunday's halftime show. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the focus of this year's presidential campaign has moved to new hampshire and its first in the nation primary, now just six days away. the iowa caucuses, as they often do, change the game and some candidates hoping to build on momentum and others now find themselves as high-profile targets. weijia jiang is in manchester, new hampshire. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to everybody.

strong ground game, something donald trump was criticized for not having. trump also ditched the last debate before the iowa caucuses. it's a decision he now says he does not regret, but admits it might have cost him the state as rebound. campaign trail in milford, new hampshire, tuesday, brushing off his second place standing in rubio's third place finish. >> he comes in third. i come in second. trump, no good. rubio, unbelievable night! unbelievable victory. unbelievable! >> reporter: rubio outperformed expectations in the hawkeye state and finishing just one percentage point behind trump, the new hampshire favorite. >> we have to go out and convince more people that conservatism is the right approach for america. i've done that and will do that. >> reporter: the florida senator is now positioning himself as

cruz. with the first in the nation primary here in new hampshire less than a week away, candidates on both sides are flooding the state in an effort to sway voters. while some have already made up their minds. >> everything that ted cruz believes in, he acts on. he believes in the best things for america. >> reporter: others remain undecided. >> i am going to be going to a lot of town halls and, you know, looking at candidates face-to-face and talking to them face-by-face. >> reporter: after beating bernie sanders in iowa by a razor-thin margin, hillary clinton has come to the granite state as the underdog, trailing sanders by 18 points. >> i hope you will choose with both your heart and your mind. >> we are going to go state after state after state after state. >> reporter: both candidates could face each other in a possible debate here tomorrow. and here on the campaign trail, hillary clinton's use of a

following her. the state department now says then senator john kerry also send her information now deemed anne-marie? hampshire, thank you. we will talk about what happened in iowa and the upcoming new hampshire primary with senator bernie sanders coming up on "cbs this morning." this morning, a major storm system has brought a mix of severe and potentially dangerous weather to the central united states. that same system is pushing a band of tornadoes into the deep south. heavy snow and, in some areas, blizzard-like conditions hampered travel in the plains. tornado watches were issued for parts of louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. don champion has our report. >> reporter: a large destructive tornado hit western alabama late yesterday. >> thank god we, you know, we are all -- we were all okay. that is the main thing any time you have a storm.

tuscaloosa. mobile homes, trees and power lines were destroyed but no injuries reported. >> alabama not as bad as oklahoma or texas but when we have one, it's usually bad. >> reporter: it was one of several tornadoes to touch down in the south. at least eight were reported in mississippi, sending residents scrambling for safety. >> we got in our truck with our grandson coming to our storm pit. as luck would have it, we never made it to the storm pit. the tornado picked us up and turned us before the land hit us. >> reporter: there are no reports of serious injury, but just east of jackson, severe flooding is being reported. several people had to be rescued. in the midwest, the issue is heavy snow and strong winds. there were whiteout conditions from nebraska to michigan. in nebraska, more than a foot of snow fell, drifts were several feet deep. in wisconsin, the flakes came fast and furious. >> all of a sudden, it's just like somebody snapped their

in pretty big flakes. >> reporter: there are blizzard conditions in southwestern minnesota where folks are being advised to stay off the roads. more than 10 inches of snow has fallen and several highways have been shut down. here in the east, no big worries in fact, record highs could be into the 60s in new york and washington today. anne-marie, let's hit the road. >> my goodness. don champion here in new york, i think it's a great idea. in the coming days, centers for disease control says it will issue guidelines on the prevention of the sexual transmission. zika virus. health official in texas identified the first u.s. case of the zika virus transmitted through sexual contact. the patient had not travel, but had sex with someone who had returned from venezuela. >> now it's a game-changer. we are talking about sexually transmitted virus, the zika virus, and that is a concern as

symptoms. >> the virus is usually spread by mosquitoes and is linked to a serious birth defect. it's still unclear what caused an explosion on board a commercial airliner in africa. the airbus, operated by a somali airline, had just taken off from mogadishu late yesterday en route to djibouti. passengers had put on oxygen masks. there were 74 passengers and crew on board. two were injured. the jet returned to mogadishu and landed safely. but a small hole in its side. all passengers are being accounted for. the cause of the explosion is under investigation. a pretrial hearing in bill cosby's sexual assault case resumes today in pennsylvania. cosby was arrested and charged in december with drugging and sexually assaulting a temple university employee in 2004. cosby wants the case thrown out because of a deal made with the former district attorney. the judge could decide as early

a denver broncos player is sent home from the super bowl this morning amid a prostitution scandal. ryan murphy, a safety on the broncos practice squad, was detained by not arrested during a sting operation tuesday night. jamie yuccas is in san francisco, the super bowl city, jamie, good morning. anne-marie. investigators let ryan murphy go without citing him, once it was determined he was not involved in any illegal activity, but all of the negative attention ahead of the biggest game of the year bought him a one-way ticket back home to denver. the prostitution sting was centered around a san jose hotel. murphy's brothe was cited by sheriff's deputies. murphy has not played a down for the broncos this year. he was assigned to a practice squad after released from the seattle seahawks. he is from nearby oakland,

francisco bay area. after sending murphy home, broncos head coach gary kubiak released a statement saying, quote, it's best for the team if we continued our preparation for super bowl 50 without him. now in a bit of a twist here, the broncos opponent, the carolina panthers, was given a little bit of a word of warning, you could say, from eugene robinson on sunday. you may remember that robinson, back in 1999, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute the night before super bowl xxxiii. he was a former atlanta falcon. robinson told the panthers on sunday, quote, don't mess this anne-marie? advice. jamie yuccas in san francisco, thanks a lot, jamie. coming up on the "morning news." a dangerous water rescue. crews searching for a surfer get caught up in huge waves. later, a dramatic rescue off a florida beach after a small plane crashes into the ocean. this is the "cbs morning news." beyond the scale program

a rescue crew off the coast of oregon wound up needing help themselves. two crew members from a nearby fire and rescue team were tossed into the water when their boat overturned. the coast guard crew had to hoist them to safety. the crews were there searching for a seattle teen who fell off the rocks and into the pacific ocean on monday. the crew suspended the search for the 17-year-old girl yesterday. a small plane crashes into the water at a florida beach. and new details on the murder investigation of a virginia girl. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. virginia's "the roanoke times" says a preliminary autopsy shows that nicole lovell was stabbed on the day she went missing. virginia tech freshman david eisenhauer is accused of kidnapping and murdering the 13-year-old. the girl's mother was overcome tuesday, talking about her daughter. >> nicole was a very loveable

nicole touched many people throughout her short life. >> another virginia tech student, natalie keepers, faces a new, more serious charge, that could mean a life sentence if she is convicted. florida "sun sentinel" reports on a small plane crash in the ocean off miami beach. within minutes of going down tuesday, the single-engine plane was submerged. witnesses photos show the scene as the pilot and passenger made it to a wing. a lifeguard helped them make it safely to shore. >> they are really lucky, you know? when you hit the water, it's like concrete. when you hit that water with that speed. >> the two men escaped without serious injury. they said they experienced engine trouble before the crash. a tow boat hauled the plane back to a marina. the "detroit free press" says flint residents will have part of their water bills covered under a proposal from michigan governor rick snyder. the 30 million dollar plan would pay for water used for drinking,

laying off 1,700 employees. that is about 15% of its work force. yahoo! is selling assets. ceo marissa mayer said the board will consider strategic alternatives that could result in the sale of yahoo!'s internet operations. activist shareholders have been pushing for change and the ouster of mayer. toyota is recalling 30,000 suv and trucks due to airbag problems. the roof-mounted airbags on sun toyotas could inflate without a crash. toyota says the problem is an issue with the computer that controls the airbags. dealers will replace those computers for no charge. for model details, head to our website cbsnews.com. >> apple will reportedly unveil a new smaller iphone next month. it will have a four-inch screen compared to the 4.7-inch screen on the iphone 6s.
