strong but it will get even stronger and shifting in our direction. wind close to 50 miles per hour. the strong wind is moving toward sioux city. they just had a wind gust of 44. we are expecting the strong wind to arrive in central iowa by about 3:00 p.m.. we will have wind gusting was to 50 miles per hour from the west and a winter -- a wind advisory until 6:00 p.m. eric: new information this morning in sunday's shooting in eagle grove. police have charged one man with attempted murder. officials say 21-year-old marcos castaneda pulled up alongside 26-year-old hugo salinas in the 100 block of north lucas avenue sunday. castaneda then got out of his vehicle, shot salinas and then shot himself. both men were taken to the hospital. no word on their conditions right now. castaneda is now facing attempted-murder charges.

district is looking for a new superintendent this morning. district officials say jason ellingson resigned thursday, effective immediately. earlier this week, the district received a report making allegations against ellingson. the nature of those allegations has not been released. district officials say the resignation is not related to wednesday's school-wide lockdown. but we have learned more about what triggered the lockdown. police arrested ortan haywood after he confronted staff about an incident on a school bus. another parent, alena mcguire, tells kcci the bus driver assaulted ortan's son and her on tuesday. district officials have not commented about the allegations against the driver, and say they don't know much about the incident. the bus did have a camera on it, but it wasn't working at the time. elizabeth: after a fire at jefferson's pizza ranch last month, investigators are turning their attention to the manager. melinda wood admitted to stealing more than $12,000 from her old job at the jefferson

a search warrant was issued for text messages on wood's cell phone around the time of the pizza ranch fire. after an investigation, jefferson police, fire and a state fire marshal agent all concluded the fire was intentionally set. we spoke with wood thursday, and she insists she didn't do it. >> i was upset because they brought up my past. everybody in town automatically thinks i did it because of my past. i know that i didn't do it, that i'm innocent. elizabeth: wood says she hasn't been fired and she is still the manager at the pizza ranch. police interviewed wood the day after the fire and released her. eric: a woman victimized by a peeping tom is pushing for changes at the statehouse. in 2012, ruth lapointe found holes inside her iowa city apartment in the ceiling and floor. the landlord carved out places to peep using crawl spaces to spy. right now, a peeping conviction requires the victim be partially nude and the suspect be aroused when spying on the victim.

court re-victimized her and others in the apartment. >> it was hard for me and the other victims to have to describe the fact that our landlord was or was not aroused , and knowing that his guilt was resting on that was burdensome. eric: senate bill 21-85 drops the current requirements, and bumps up the penalty from a simple misdemeanor to a serious misdemeanor. elizabeth: happening today, kcci will be watching as the iowa utilities board meets again to the board held four days of hearings last week on whether to allow the pipeline project to move forward. today, they're expected to review the pros and cons of the project, and could consider a motion to meet in closed session to discuss. today's meeting is scheduled from 1:00 to 4:00 this afternoon. and today the iowa economic development authority is meeting to consider helping fund dupont pioneer's merger with dow chemical. help the company bring their new headquarters to iowa.

eric: a conservative group will start airing ads here in iowa, pushing for the next president to pick a nominee for the opening on the supreme court. >> the supreme court has a vacancy and your vote in november is your only voice. eric: not only do these ads promote the republican stance that president obama should take a pass during his final months in the white house, they are also applauding u.s. senators like charles grassley, who may have targets on them for trying to delay the appointment process. iowans we spoke to were split on whether president obama, or the next president should select a nominee. >> president obama should select the next supreme court nominee. >> why do you say that? >> because he's the president and it's the president's role to select the next supreme court justice and it's the senate's role to confirm that justice. >> i think the next president should. it's too big a deal for a lame duck president. eric: a cbs news poll found 47% of americans would like to see president obama appoint the next

46% would like to see that done by the next president. before a decision is made on who's replacing him, thousands of people are coming together to remember justice antonin scalia today. shaina humphries has more on this, and shaina, president obama is set to be there today, but he's facing criticism for something else this morning, right? shaina: he is. president obama will pay respects at the supreme court today, but is not planning to attend justice scalia's funeral several republican lawmakers have criticized him for that decision. mr. cruz he's going to cuba, but : somehow president obama can't find time to go to justice scalia's funeral. shaina: vice president joe biden and his wife jill biden are attending the funeral tomorrow in place of the obamas. thousands are expected to attend, and scalia's son, father paul scalia, is set to lead the funeral mass. some lawmakers expect president obama to announce his replacement nomination in a couple of weeks. more news around the nation, fire crews are battling grass fires across several states in

this is video from oklahoma, where one of several fires burning across the state continues this morning. ranchers have been forced to evacuate their property as well as their cattle. fire was making -- wind was making fire so difficult to put out in missouri but thankfully no one has been hurt or killed in any of these fires. eric: as you wake up, it is already really warm. metinka: it feels like spring, warm and windy at the strongest wind to come. wind over 40 is just to the west near sioux city and will be building in throughout the morning hours. here in des moines, we are now sitting at 58 degrees, 63 degrees in lamoni. the average high for today is only 37.

the main factor today will be the wind coming in from the west. be prepared for that as you are traveling today. eric: the first day of state wrestling individual competition is in the books at wells fargo arena. here's a look at where things stand so far. fort dodge leads 3a competition so far. creston/orient-macksburg is setting the pace in 2a. south tama is right there. atlanta, and alia are within striking distance. and alburnett leads 1a. competition continues this morning with quarter-finals and consolation matches. semi-finals begin this afternoon at 3:30 with class 1a. 3a is at 7:30 pm and 2a starts

elizabeth: also happening at the iowa event center this weekend is the blue ribbon bacon fest. that's where emmy victor joins us live from this morning. emmy, what can we expect this year? emmy: lots of people and bacon. bacon fest is one of the biggest food festivals in iowa. this is the ninth year of bacon fest and the second that they are hosting it at the iowa events center. i am live in hy-vee hall. today they are setting things up but tomorrow you can see about 60 different volunteers managing all four floors of this building from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. that is where you will see bacon lectures, bacon workouts, and 40 vendors with 80 bacon flavored foods. there's also a new line up of performers bars and a dance , floor for your entertainment. this year, the event is about a month later than it was

>> this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news this morning with eric hanson, elizabeth klinge, meteorologist kurtis gertz and right now coverage with shaina humphries. already in des moines. temperatures across northern 30's and 40's. the main story besides it team warm will be the wind. strong wind is building and across central iowa. we can have wind gusting close to 50 miles per hour, coming in from the west. temperatures are headed for the mid-60's, so at least it is going to be warm. great news for outdoor plans,

the clouds will be moving in by the afternoon on sunday, with highs close to 50. shaina: warm temperatures here in iowa, but in northern california, people are cleaning up after several inches of snow fall this week. the snow caused three avalanches near lake tahoe thursday. luckily no one was hurt, but rescue crews did have two pole three people from two cars that were buried in the avalanche. several roads and one ski resort are closed down because of the potential danger of more avalanches. pope francis is chiming in on the recent spread of the zika virus. on his flight home from mexico, the pope indicated that contraceptives may be used to stop the spread of the virus, despite the church's long-standing ban on most forms of birth control. zika can cause devastating birth defects if contracted by pregnant women. this has prompted some latin american governments to urge women to avoid getting pregnant. eric: flint, michigan is getting a helping hand today thanks to iowa state university star

and hy-vee. morris is from flint originally, where they are in the middle of the water crisis we have been hearing about. hy-vee's ceo heard morris asking for people to help, so he decided to donate eleven total trucks for morris's number 11. >> i'm very honored, truly blessed young man to have this opportunity to do this to my hometown and they really need it and they going to appreciate it just like i appreciate it. eric: that is so cool. morris' mother will be there today to receive the water. with 35,000 employees in iowa, hy-vee is the state's largest private employer. and as kcci's todd magel found out in a special report last night, the man in charge says the plan is to keep growing. ceo randy edeker says he plans to open six new hy-vee stores every year. this year, he has three new stores planned to open in minnesota. edeker is the 4th ceo since hy-vee opened in 1930. he says their business plan of

store, and employees' relationships with customers into one that made $9 billion in sales last year. >> we're successful because of the relationships we have in our local markets. we can have the biggest, shiniest stores but if you don't have personal relationships with your customers, take care of them every single day, that's what makes a company strong. eric: you can catch that story online. hy-vee is also planning big changes for its west des moines corporate campus. construction on a new $28 million corporate conference center is underway. hy-vee is also looking to expand its headquarters building to make room for 100 more workers. work on that should begin this fall. elizabeth: maytag dairy farms in newton is now expanding a recall of some of its famous blue cheese, because of a possible listeria contamination. maytag says it is recalling blue cheese, with the lot number 150482, written on the packaging.

number 150481. so far there have been no , reports of anyone actually getting sick from the cheese. some cheeses you buy in stores may contain more than you think. companies often use cellulose to keep grated cheeses from clumping together, but it turns out, some manufacturers also use it as filler. >> you're getting ripped off. it's not what you bargained for. elizabeth: 2% to 4% cellulose is considered acceptable in the cheese industry, but a recent study found two brands have considerably more. essential everyday grated parmesan cheese contains 8.8% cellulose. and walmart's great value parmesan has 7.8%. the company that makes essential everyday has pulled its cheese off shelves to investigate. walmart has not commented on the accusations. a popular downtown store is planning a new spot in west des moines.

end architectural salvage will open a new store in west glen town center. the salvage sells old items and re-purposed custom made furniture. the company has its own tv show on the diy network. wall street was unable to keep a positive trend going for a fourth day thursday. the dow closed down about 40 points. the nasdaq fell more than 46. and the s and p 500 finished down about nine. a new announcement from apple this morning, the company will reduce monthly iphone payments if you trade in your old one. it's part of their trade up with installments program. in some cases, payments will be as low as $15 a month. what model you trade, the phone's condition, and which new iphone you by. eric: coffee lovers and harry potter fans have something new to try at starbucks right now. the company has come out with a new, limited-edition smoked butterscotch latte. starbucks has made no specific connection between the movie and the drink itself, but many fans

butterbeer. elizabeth: the time is now 5:20. we want to head over to metinka. we have great temperatures and great amounts of wind. metinka: the winds of change howling out there today, 59 degrees. northern iowa, readings in the 40's and 30's, but it is going to feel like the spring. right now the wind is pretty strong, close to 30 miles per hour, but the strongest wind is getting reggie -- ready to build in northwest iowa. the wind all morning long has been gusting over 50 and 60 miles per hour in south dakota, and that wind will be moving into the state by midmorning. the strongest wind will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

the west, so keep that in mind if you are going to be doing any traveling. we are under a wind advisory until 6:00 p.m. for the high wind, and even in northwest iowa, a high wind warning. we are waking up to clear skies across central iowa as the specific system is moving into the midwest, warm air and rain showers across south dakota and minnesota. it looks like the rain will miss iowa but the wind will not. the pressure difference between this sky and incoming highs is creating very strong wind from the west. by this evening, the wind will be settling down, and tomorrow will be a picture-perfect day, still sunny and warm. the wind is already starting to shift over to the west.

nikole: in a town hall on cnn, donald trump said he doesn't like fighting with the pope as he defended his proposal to build a wall at the u.s.-mexico border something the pope said , isn't christian. but amid the holy war of words, democrats had their own bickering battle over their credentials at a their own town hall on msnbc and telemundo. the fight between clinton and sanders comes as new polls show tightening races, as well as in nevada. leading bernie sanders by almost 30 points in south carolina. eric: we understand hillary clinton may be getting another key endorsement today. do you know who? nikole: it appears south carolina representative jim clyburn is expected to publicly back clinton before the state's primary on february 27. clyburn is one of the top african-american leaders on capitol hill and the highest

metinka: temperatures are close to 60 already, a great way to start the friday. check out storm lake, they just had a wind gust of 56 miles per hour. been breezy but nothing extreme. we are expecting strong wind to build in midmorning and lasts through the afternoon hours. whole lot of wind. elizabeth: new details this morning, attempted murder charges now filed in that shooting in eagle grove. it happened sunday night police say 21-year-old marcos castaneda shot 26-year-old hugo salinas, and then turned the gun on himself. castaneda now being charged in the case. no word yet on either man's condition. now to maxwell school officials there are without a superintendent this morning. jason ellingson turned in his resignation on thursday effective immediately.

earlier this weekend making allegations against ellingson. the nature of those allegations was not revealed only that they , are related to off-duty matters. officials say there is no evidence anyone has been harmed, or that district programs have been compromised. and in jefferson the manager of , a restaurant that burned down says she didn't do it. >> i feel really upset right now. i don't think it's fair to me. elizabeth: melinda wood manages the pizza ranch. officials have ruled the january 27 fire was intentionally set. she admits stealing more than $12,000 from her old job at the jefferson subway but denies having anything to do with the fire. police interviewed wood the day after the fire and released her. eric: a new bill at the statehouse would increase the penalty for peeping toms. senate bill 21-85 would change the crime from a simple to a serious misdemeanor. and it would no longer require the victim to be partially

aroused. victims tell kcci those requirements are difficult to prove in court. another bill that would've let you drive faster on iowa interstates is not going anywhere this session. the effort to bump the speed limit from 70 to 75 did not make it past the funnel deadline. lawmakers wrapped up work for the week thursday afternoon. also out for this session a , death with dignity bill. it would have allowed iowans with a terminal illness to get a prescription for medication to end their lives. also out a bill that would have , forced state regulators to grant a gambling license for a new casino in cedar rapids. looking ahead today, we are going to be watching for two potentially big decisions to be handed down. the iowa utilities board meets first, on the bakken oil pipeline. the board may consider a motion to meet in closed session to discuss their decision on whether to allow the project to move forward. the board held four days of

they are expected to review a written order of the pros and cons of the project. any news related to bringing a new corporate headquarters to iowa. dupoint pioneer in johnston is today the iowa economic , development authority is meeting to consider a financial assistance award related to those efforts. we'll let you know what happens. shaina: right now president , obama facing criticism for not planning to attend the funeral of supreme court justice antonin scalia. >> what the president thinks is appropriate is respectfully paying tribute to high profile patriotic american citizens even when you don't agree on all the issues. shaina: the president is planning to pay his respects today when scalia lies in repose at the supreme court. thousands of people are expected . his funeral is tomorrow. the president also considering scalia's replacement on the high court. sources say an announcement could come in two weeks. also right now firefighters , working through the night to

some video from last night shows how bad it is in tulsa. fire officials are estimating 40,000 acres of land are burning across oklahoma. no one killed or hurt but several homes have been destroyed. part of the problem is the strong winds are spreading the flames fast. elizabeth: we are definitely not too dry here in iowa. forecasters say we have an increased risk of spring flooding right now. the national weather service released the spring flood outlook noting the snowmelt is , causing concern right now. it shows the risk of minor river flooding is higher north of interstate 80. ice jams could also be a problem north of highway 20. but forecasters say if we get normal weather conditions through may there's little risk of major or even moderate flooding. that snow melt also making for some messy trails around central iowa right now. many say with the warmer, windier weather today many trails will be dried tomorrow. and cross your fingers, golfers .

cabin. 26 passengers were onboard. some said they could smell smoke and the floor felt hot. a different plane took the passengers on to chicago. >> to do a bridge takes years, just to start a big bridge project up you go through archeology, through hydraulics , right-of-way negotiations. those projects are slow. eric: linn county engineer steve gannon is explaining one reason why iowa may have the most deficient bridges and the station -- in the nation. a new report shows the state has more than 5,000 deficient bridges. and gannon says some bridges are getting fixed, but they can only do so many because the work typically takes a lot time. he also notes that iowa has a lot of bridges more than 24,000. ,elizabeth: still to come this friday morning february 19 bunches of bacon.

this is kcci 8 news this morning with eric hanson, elizabeth klinge, meteorologist kurtis gertz and right now coverage with shaina humphries. metinka: it is a windy and warm friday morning, the strongest wind building into northwest iowa. at storm lake, 54 miles per hour. in des moines, we just had a wind gust of 36 miles per hour. it is 58 beautiful degrees in the metro, 63 in lamoni, and colder across northern iowa. very strong wind will continue to build and throughout the morning hours, lasting until about 2:00 or 3:00 until they settle back down. expect wind gusts of 50 miles

elizabeth: the iowa events center is going to be incredibly busy this weekend, not only because of bacon but because state wrestling is also going on at wells fargo arena. championships take place tomorrow. parking will probably be at a premium all around the events center. eric: our sports team has really been doing an awesome job bringing us the action every day. fun to watch these athletes on the mat. one 8th grader is waiting for his turn at the state tournament. jake childs wrestles for clarinda in southwest iowa. and he competes with only one leg. childs was 6 when a lawn mower badly damaged his leg. his coaches, he is doing pretty well. >> he figured his angles out, figured out how to use his long advantage. >> jake has always been a hard worker. he gives us 100% in practice everyday. >> i probably can't do a lot of

eric: that is awesome, just the effort is pretty inspiring. jake also plays baseball and football. elizabeth: jake childs can probably draw some inspiration himself from kobey pritchard of indianola. he lost his leg to cancer in 2005 and he made the state tournament this year. shaina: wanted to show you one of the sweetest videos we've seen in awhile. this is really cute. a 6-year-old girl knew her big brother wanted a hamster more than anything. so she decided to spend her birthday money to get one for him and here's what happened when she surprised him. >> it's a hamster, i paid for it. eric: so cute. shaina: the embrace lasts so
