to unwind? kim st. onge takes us inside three hot spots to get noticed in des moines. steve: tonight students are speaking out monday's controversial basketball chant. a group invoked donald trump's name taunting racially diverse perry high school. steve: student leaders extended an olive branch today apologizing to perry. ryan: some concerned students contacted us hoping that a degrading trump chant will not be repeated at tonight's district championship basketball game. >> just to see how much we hurt perry just hurt me inside. ryan: that infamous trump chant started in the second half. the student body co-president was in the stands monday night. >> there is a feeling inside where this is wrong, but at the same time you don't think of

of the other side. >> it hurts at first. ryan: sonia wasn't proud of the public image after the report. >> i knew as soon as we saw it, we had to fix this, this is wrong. ryan: they organized a leader with athletic leaders from perry high school. the two groups met this morning. >> they wanted to own up to their mistake. they didn't want to make excuses, our kids did not want to go to perry and defend themselves. they wanted to say with we were wrong and we were going to get better because of it. ryan: shouting trump using the candidate's controversial anti-immigration stance. >> it started a really good conversation about race and ethnicity. ryan: her composition teachers discussed the incident. >> how we can come together as a community and support one another and love each other no

that's the important part. that is what needs to be learned here. ryan: at tonight's district championship game this week the trump chant incident not dampening the spirit for the perry blue jays tonight. a number of student and staff members from dallas center grimes showing up tonight to show their support for the perry blue jays. reporting from johnson, ryan smith, kcci 8 news. steve: we are following a developing story tonight in south central kansas. police say four people are dead and as many as 14 others are injured after a workplace shooting at the excel industries place in hesston, kansas. the suspected gunman, reportedly an excel employee was shot and killed by police. investigators say there are at least four crime scenes, the plant, the facility parking lot and two roadway intersections. the f.b.i. is on the scene investigating tonight.

with the murder of his wife and his daughter. barney fast breaken faces two counts of first degree murder. >> investigators say after barney fast breaken shot his wife and daughter, he shot himself, but he survived. his stepson told me he is glad that his stepfather survived so he can think about what he did for the rest of his life. after three months in the hospital, barney fast breaken finally appeared before a judge advisely trembling, the left side of his face showing damage from the bullet that he put in his own head after reportedly shooting his wife and daughter. >> he looks messed up, but he did it to himself. you brought this thing on yourself when you could have

city is having a thriving night life. there really aren't that many people walking here in downtown des moines right now, it's the number of cars that are parked along court avenue is any indication of how busy it is inside, obviously des moines night life is doing something right. the question really is, what is it about these places, what are they going to keep the big crowds coming back. kim: des moines is known for attracting young professionals from across the country, so when they get here, where are they going? the 20 and 30 somethings tell me they're looking for a hip place with the right vibe that

sunshine to finish your saturday, saturday night should be clear and then here comes the front sunday morning. with this we could see some light showers, i think the best chance north of highway 20 and it will be considerably colder in northern iowa on sunday, southern iowa will be in the 60's. 26 degrees tonight, mostly includedy chilly, northwest winds five to 10. tomorrow that high, 49 we'll start out with some clouds and they'll slowly thin, again the southwest winds southwest winds helping to warm us up. temperatures on saturday, it's still february and we'll be climbing into the 60's. 62 degrees, the record high is 68. i do want to point out by the afternoon, southwest winds start to miles an hour. again, that weak front on sunday, not a great chance of rain, winds pick up 58. monday is nice, 57 with sunshine. tuesday, this is the system to watch. it could have a bigger impact

steve: new at 10:00, a chihuahua mix really needs some help in the love handle department. stacey: vanessa peng shows us how this cute little fur ball is getting the help he needs. vanessa: babe, formerly known as tubby, has a lot on his mind. kibble and treats and kibble and treats. >> i did think he was a pot bellied pig. vanessa: i'm sure he prefers pleasantly plump, but this fur ball has goals. babe is exercising and he is on a diet. >> weigh want to make sure that he loses weight, but loses it in a very, you know, slow fashion to make sure that it's notice going to shock his system. vanessa: they make him work for his food. >> there you go! he could barely do that. vanessa: he may be on a diet, he gets treats, 10 of these a day, only three calories.

they were looking to downsize, so a little over a month ago they dropped him off with his brother and dad. >> there is babe next to him. he was a big boy. vanessa: they're all chihuahua mixes, see the difference. >> it's very possible he made sure he was the first one to the food bowl. vanessa: he weighed in at an unhealthy 45 points. not bad little guy, he is almost there. >> you can notice that his tail starts to wag. >> he'll feel better and he is certainly going to live a lot longer. vanessa peng, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. some help. by the way, babe's name, you guessed it, it's from the movie about the pig raised by sheepdogs. he is not available for adoption yet, they want him down to a healthy weight first.

andy: we're working our way closer to at the same time tournament time. next weekend, it's the girls tournament, the following week the boys. the boys teams getting one step closer. grant view christian was one game short of state a year ago, this year they're trying to get two more wins starting with tonight's game. too close to watch out there. in the white and a slim lead in the fourth, robbie hit a couple of clutch threes for the thunder. they open up a lead, brady right down the lane, pretty stepthrough and the lay-in, game is tied up with under three to play. grant puts the thunder up for good knocking down the long two. the thunder roll 58-54. they are one win away from

throws in another one, opened up a big second-quarter lead, look at this move, spin, circus shot off the window, bucket and a foul, but tao little, too late. 62-50 is the final. the end of an era in girls high school basketball as the tournament week dawns next week. looking for a new head coach. bob and sharon hanson decided to retire after 46 years coaching girls basketball here in the state. they combined for 775 wins and six state championships including five with the maroons. the iowa hawkeyes season that looked so promising a week and a half ago now suddenly teaters on a difficult spot. the hawks are certainly in the ncaa tournament, but all of the excitement they had for a number one seed is certainly hanging in the balance after struggling in the last week and losing a disappointing game

>> we haven't played well in the last two games yet we have done some good thihis in those two games. you tend to only focus on what we didn't do, what we should have done. we did a lot of good things in both of these games. we didn't do enough to win. >> it's definitely correctable, i think. rotations aren't as good as they were earlier in the year and a few broken where wisconsin is a good shooting team. andy: the hawks take on the buckeyes on sunday. you can watch it right here on kcci. sigh clothes play on saturday, steve and company hosting kansas state, just the second to last home game of the season up there at hilton.
