turning point this this presidential campaign. it is likely the last chance for challengers to catch the front-runners, donald trump and hillary clinton. no candidate can clinch the nomination tonight, but voters in 12 states are choosing nearly half the delegates needed for the republican nomination, and more than a third needed for the democrats. major garrett is covering the republicans, nancy cordes the democrats, and we'll start tonight with major. >> today's such a big day, and i shouldn't be here because i shouldn't be thinking about this. i should be thinking about tonight. >> reporter: a supremely comfort donald trump ignored sprlt states and campaigned in ohio, which doesn't vote for two weeks. he focused his fire on democrat hillary clinton. >> hillary clinton does not have the strength or the stamina to become president. >> reporter: truz voted in his home state of texas and took a dig at marco rubio, who is currently trailing in his home state of florida.

biggest battleground state voting today. in alexandria katie dorgan vote forward clinton, her husband, jim, voted for rubio. what do you think of what's going on in the political system right now? >> it's insane. it's unpresidential, and we have a lot of bigger problems to worry about than name calling. >> reporter: clinton argued that's why her party should coalesce about her as quickly as possible. >> i'm just speak out against bigotry and bullying wherever i hear it, and i hear a lot of it from the republican candidates. they seem to have forgotten completely about issues and they're now running their campaigns based on insults. >> reporter: sanders said there's no rush to name a democratic nominee. >> this is a campaign that's going to the philadelphia convention in july, and i want to thank the millions of supporters throughout this country who are fighting to make real changes in this country. >> reporter: and he's got millions of dollars to keep going no matter what happens

scott, sanders pointed out today that even though this is a super-sized primary day, there are still 35 states that haven't voted yet, including some big worngz like new york and california. >> pelley: sanders' campaign said they racked up $40 million in february alone. nancy cordes for us tonight. nancy, thank you. joining us for election night tonight are norah o'donnell, cohost of "cbs this morning,"" and john dickerson, our cbs news political director and anchor of "face the nation" opinion john, what are we expecting to the republican side? >> reporter, well tonight we have donald trump and the men who would like to stop his steam roller. to do that, they need to win, ted cruz and marco rubio need to win somewhere. if they can't win they need a story, something they can take to their voters and donors and say, "please naing there with me." that's one of the challenges we're look for. in the larger picture, in talking to republicans, they talk about a trump realignment of the party so every time we get a new result, we get to see how he's remaking the republican party in his own image.

we expect to see for the democrats? >> reporter: this is also the biggest night for democrats and hillary clinton is hoping to cement her lead. but of the 12 states voting tonight, bernie sanders is trying to do well in five of them. he told john on "face the nation" on sunday he hoped to win in minnesota, oklahoma, colorado and do well in massachusetts. if hillary clinton can do well in those states, win one of those states, it would suggest that sanders' momentum has fizzled. the test for sanders has always been can he expand beyond his base, his liberal base? can we do well among minority voters? minority voters are the bullwork of democrats tonight. >> pelley: john, the republican establishment is apopleptic about trump. >> reporter: it's not just main street republicans. it is the conservatives. paul ryan had to speak out the second time about this liquid, the second time about donald trump. once it was about his man ban on muslim immigration. now he's talking about his lack of a response when asked about the k.k.k.

the person who is marching towards the nomination in the republican party is at odds with the speaker, he's at odds with nikki haley, the governor of south carolina, who gave the republican response to the president at the state of the union. he's attacked the three most popular republicans in texas politics. he is headed towards the nomination but he is in conflict with his party. >> pelley: norah, in a lot of these states, people have been voting for weeks because states allow early voting bhap impact do you think that will have? >> reporter: so i think this might be one of the most fascinating storylines of the night. as many as 40% of the electorate in these states has already voteed by early and absentee voting. so one of the thing i'm going to be looking for is how the late deciders breakdeciders break, specifically in the republican party, given the droafers over trump the last week, and the amped up attacks from rubio and cruz. do the late deciders break for them? >> pelley: and norah o'donnell and john dickerson are going to be right here with us as cbs

updates throughout the evening, andang hour-long prime-time special at 10:00, 9:00 central time. norah o'donnell, charlie rose, john dickerson, anthony mason, elaine quijano, bob schieffer, and i will have the very latest rurnlz and analysis. and anthony mason is joining us right now, as a matter of fact. we've been talking to voters, anthony, all day long as they've left the polls. what are we findouth? >> reporter: well, scott, among super tuesday voters in the two parties we found decidedly different attitudes towards governments. first among democrats in our exit poll, fully half, 50%, said they want to continue president obama's policies. and in previous primaries, this headache favorable for hillary clinton. but, now let's look at the republican voters, because among republican voters, there's a deep discontent with government. nine out of 10 republican voters said they're unhappy with the federal government, and that includes 45% who said they're angry.

i look everywhere. >> reporter: in a video deposition, her stalker michael barrett testified he picked andrews because she was trending online. he said he used a house phone at the marriott where andrews was staying to find her room number. >> they connected me. the house phone, concierge phone shows a room number so you knew what room she was in. >> reporter: barrett shot cell phone video through a peephole and later put the naked video of andrews online, where it's been watched more than 17 million times. andrews says the staff at the nashville marriott should have told her when barrett asked to stay in the room next to hers. in cross-examination, lawyers for the hotel owner, a marriott franchisee, emphasized andrews professional success since the videos came out. >> yes. >> reporter: barrett pled guilty to talking andrews in 2010 and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
