>> today you just get the dry conditions across the front range, more snow in the high country. temperatures this morning, 23 in grand junction, 30 in boulder and 31 in lamar. heading into denver, starting off with 38 downtown, 32 in aurora and 32 in centennial. there is snow in the state with a little in the southeastern corner, fairly clear skies here in denver with a little cloud cover. looking at the hourly forecast, noon today 43, 45 by 2:00, we're in the 30s by 5:00 tonight. a warm, dry day with a chance of snow. more on that in a moment. joel? we have a closure southbound i-25 just north of u.s. 34. this is loveland over here. it's in the southbound direction where we have had a full closure due to police activity.

if you're heading southbound coming into town. see across the metro area, we have a trouble spot at hamden and dtc. watch out for that. and we have police activity and i-25 and 84th, not causing delays on i-25. this morning president obama is going to outline the executive action on gun control. the presidential candidates are talking tough about the president's actions. >> reporter: president obama is once again going to abuse his power to try to seize our guns. >> reporter: senator ted cruz issuing a prebuttal to the president's executive order on gun control. republicans are already slamming the plan, ben carson comparing this push to obamacare.

president who said if you like your doctor oar insurance company you can keep them. now he's saying, you like your gun, you can keep it. trust that. >> reporter: and the strongest condemnation from donald trump. >> pretty soon you won't be able to get guns. guns. >> the good news is these are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they are also ones that the overwhelming majority of american people including gun owners support and believe in. >> reporter: even some of those who support increased background checks are concerned. steve owns a gun store in new york state and worries the actions could lead to greater infringement on rights. >> most precipitations take a legitimate piece of legislation like that and add on a whole

really punitive to the law- abiding citizen and takes our rights away. >> president obama has invited colorado representative rhonda fields to the white house today to talk about the executive action on gun control. we are tracking this from the state capitol this morning. >> reporter: this was the center of gun control a couple years ago when the legislature passed four controversial gun laws and she led the charge in 2013 to pass more restrictive laws in colorado. today she is at it again. president obama invited representative rhonda fields to the white house today to talk about his executive action. the president says he'll bypass congress and include extensive background checks and

from suspected terrorists on the no-fly list. the action is already getting criticism from republicans. >> it's not constitutional. and i'm confident the courts will reject his attempts to do that. >> even gun owners say background checks are a good thing to do. >> reporter: representative fields is no stranger to gun violence. june of 2005 her son and his fiancee were murdered by a suspect they were set to testify against, who had shot another friend earlier that year. representative fields is just one of four lawmakers invited to the white house with president obama today. jamie leary, cbs 4 news. smash and grab thieves have hit 23 crimes in three different cities now. >> reporter: there have been

robberies across the metro monday morning. a hooded figure was seen throwing a rock through the door of the verizon store at approximately the same time someone threw a rock through truck logic, stealing cash. detectives are talking about looking for one person or a group of people with striking similarities. despite the surveillance video, police say they have no leads and no suspects. today the so-called affluenza teen who received only probation for a drunk driving crash which killed four people in texas is expected to appear in court in mexico for an extradition hearing. 18-year-old ethan couch fled to

ago as prosecutors investigated his probation. his mother will also appear in court today in l.a. el nio has people in california dealing with snow and preparing for more trouble. in the mountains, the latest snow pack is about 5 feet in the sierras. and breaking out of the four- year drought has people more flooding. the latest storm is set to hit wednesday and linger till friday. the denver broncos are the top seed in the afc and right now the team has yet to announce who the starting quarterback will be for the first game of the playoffs. yesterday gary kubiak offered little insight into the decision, saying he doesn't even have a timetable for making the call. the only thing he said was that

a team discovered lesser strains are able to get around vaccines which target more dominant strains, and spread farther in ways not realized before. a new health study finds infertility treatments don't contribute to developmental delays in children. researchers tracked 1800 kids born through infertility treatments and doctors in switzerland are linking higher doses of vitamin d with the increased risk of falling in patients over 70. doctors suggested vitamin d helps with patients who have a history of falling but this study found it may lead to even more falls. lauren has the weather picture for today, and there's a pretty moon out there. >> beautiful out there. we have clear skies in denver but there will be a if you

we could get more mountain snow today. starting with temperatures, not bad, 28 in denver, 38 in boulder, 24 out in burlington, 9 in avon and 23 over in grand junction. as we take a look at the satellite and radar, still some spots down in the southwest that have been getting fairly moderate snowfall. we have a couple weather makers heading our way. one is in california with all that rain. they are going to get a lot of rain over the next couple days. looking out into the ocean, there are a couple systems that will make landfall and some of that will head to colorado. we are looking at potential for snow starting maybe on thursday, wednesday night. we'll get it in the high country before that. winter weather advisory for the

10:00 a.m. today, could get up to 6 inches. the front range and eastern plains, we're going to stay on the dry side. most o. activity is staying in the high country, fizzling this morning and more snow throughout the afternoon and evening. we're not expecting anything in denver or the eastern plains. overnight tonight, skies will clear across the front range and we may have more sunshine tomorrow morning. snow in the southwestern corner getting more widespread throughout the afternoon and evening hours. the san juans could get decent snowfall out of this. denver more clouds tomorrow and you can see this shows our southwestern mountains could see the bulk of this through friday. we have a little less heading north, and here in denver we through saturday. 46 today in denver, 38 in

it's a warm day across the state but we're going to get cooler. lots of 30s in the high country and western slope. by noon today we're already in the 40s, 45 by 2:00 and still above freezing by 5:00 tonight. quick look at the five-day forecast, 44 on wednesday, 33 on thursday with that cold air coming in from canada. we're in the 20s on friday and saturday, and could see lingering snow through saturday as well. joel? i know it looks like we have the smurf filter on the camera but this is i-25 and 84th. we are watching the police activity on 84th up over i-25 this morning. we have seen some cars being able to access the ramp onto southbound i-25. you can see the camera is pointed in the northbound direction. this is affecting some speeds and then you have the express

traffic to the right. so we can expect to see just minimum delays. as we get a few more cars on the road, this can become bigger. plenty of space between the cars, not an issue around the stadium curve. we have an accident at hamden and tam rack, other than that a nice wide open drive for you. two colorado women have made the 30 under 30 list. one is the cofounder of rise colorado, working to close the education gap for low income and minority students. and retailing after creating a

as investors worried about a slowdown in global growth. adding to those jitters was the announcement that saudi arabia cut off diplomatic relations are iran. the dow did climb back to finish down 276, the worst first trading day of the year since 2008. >> after a not so great 2015, should investors do anything right now to try and cope with anything? >> reporter: i think it's tough because when you come off a disappointing year and you have that bad first day, you have to remind yourself that we've been here before, as recently as last august. if you're a long-term investor, you have to remind yourself these bad days, even months or years happen. that's why you don't put all the eggs in one basket. try not to make any rash

inches of snow in just four hours and it left a mess for drivers out there. there were several crashes in the morning and afternoon hours and overnight the area was in single digit temperatures. it's going to remain below freezing for a few days. we have been down that road before. this was us last week. >> going to be on that road again next week. we'll talk about the traffic coming up. lauren, still good for a little bit? >> should be fine. we don't get that lake-effect snow and and that gets pretty nasty. we have 28 in denver, 9 in avon and craig is above zero with 2 degrees. as we look across the country, we have heavy rain on the west coast, a lot in california, some heading toward colorado.

am and now on 94.1 fm. this morning president obama is unveiling executive orders to focus on gun background check loopholes. >> reporter: president obama outlines plans he intends to take without congressional approval, including a measure requiring gun dealers selling firearms on the internet and gun shows to be licensed and conduct background checks. another would change a federal privacy rule to keep people with mental health restrictions from possessing guns. >> this is not going to solve every violent crime in the country or prevent every mass shooting. it will potentially save lives. >> reporter: the actions are not sitting well with gun store owners like james in houston, who says the president is

>> i think what we have in the books has proven to save lives and keeps our community safer. >> reporter: representative fields says she'll urge the president to put a ban on high capacity magazines and assault- style weapons when she meets with him today. the 2016 session here will open next wednesday. jamie leary, cbs 4 morning news. the coroner could confirm the identity of a man found dead in a burned out building in arvada. firefighters found the body yesterday afternoon. the building houses a mental health and rehab office. john rutter is one of the counselors there and he was in the building when it caught fire. >> got out and a few moments later the door got sucked back in, then a few seconds later the whole building was up in flames.

are unanswered and i'm assuming they will be for quite a while. >> still no word on what caused that fire. a business owner says he's being targeted because of his religion but investigators don't agree. someone set fire to a truck behind the international market last friday and the iraqi owner thinks it's the result of the anti-muslim sentiment stemming from the terror attacks in paris and san bernardino. >> we were singled out because we are muslims and because of all these messages that are going on in the news. >> investigators say they don't think the store was targeted, pointing out a nearby dumpster was set on fire two hours later. >> we have to believe somebody intending to intimidate or harass somebody based on criteria set forth in that statute and at this point we don't have anything that leads us in that direction.

sheriff's office to reconsider the investigation. a former denver city council candidate is now accused of forging a petition and using fake names including sesame street names. >> reporter: prosecutors say 44- year-old corey houk was trying to land a last minute ballot but forging signatures and using identities of people that have died. >> there are signatures of real people and real voters that were forged, and there were also names and forged died. >> reporter: the democrat was trying to run for a city council seat in the southwest district and she was told she only had a day to get the required 100 ballot signatures after her first petition was

she admitted some of the signers tricked her but made no mention of the forged names. >> she had to sign off on them. being the best of her knowledge they were valid voters. >> reporter: there is now a warrant out for her arrest. we have breaking news out of adams county. 84th avenue over i-25 is closed because of a heavy police presence. >> you'll see a lot going on out there this morning. shawn chitnis is live there. what's going on? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned, it's a busy scene here on 84th and conifer behind me. cars are not able to head toward i-25, so this is one challenge.

side if you're going i-25 onto 84th. you're being pushed back on to the freeway. behind me we can see two cars that have collided into each other and we understand this started as a carjacking and they have two suspects in custody at this time. we are working to get more details and we'll remain on the scene and get details from police and keep you posted on the traffic impact happening here. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. the standoff in oregon still going on this morning. so far federal law enforcement has not moved to retake the federal property held by an armed group. the group is calling themselves the citizens for constitutional reform. they are being ridiculed on social media and they are upset about the five-year sentence

for arson after a fire they set spread across federal land. the ranchers were convicted three years ago and served short prison sentences but a judge ordered them to more prison time because the time they served didn't meet the minimum sentencing laws. if you're just waking up, it is 20 degrees right now in denver. it's a big weather change approaching. >> a big question, peyton or brock. ahead, the tough decision for gary kubiak.

the babies were born premature on the 1st of december and were getting constant hospital care. but the baby girls were introduced to the world yesterday. >> reporter: meet the harris triplets and their proud parents. >> we're outnumbered now. >> reporter: the rare identical triplets will be waking up in houston after spending a month in the hospital. mom says all three sisters are already in sync. >> they make the same noises, do the same thing, talk to each other in their own language. >> reporter: doctors say identical triplets are about one in a million. mom and dad were first told they were having twins, then at a second ultrasound the doctors gave them a bigger shock. >> when she said there was a third, her arm went over her

2 in craig, 23 in grand junction. we have a few clouds out there this morning but snowy on the western side of the state and corner. there's a lot of rain in california and flooding will be an issue because they are quickly. as well. some of this will head toward colorado. and as we look out here, a couple more systems are waiting to make landfall. they will head toward colorado and bring more snow to the high country and possibly even denver. looking at the winter weather advisory for the southwestern area, 2 to 6 inches possible, sticking around through 10:00 a.m. we'll see a lull in the snowfall this morning but we'll have some on the western slope and some in the high country throughout the afternoon and evening. more clouds will roll in but we

looking at more snow developing overnight tonight in the southwestern mountains. we could see some of this shift over to the front range on wednesday night into thursday. as we look at the snowfall forecast models, this does show the southwestern mountains look to get the most out of this. denver may pick up a couple inches, still watching the models on this one. temperatures for today, 46 in denver, 38 in greeley, 50 in burlington and a lot of 30s in the high country and western slope. tomorrow 44, partly sunny skies. we have changes on thursday, temperatures plummeting and a lot of cold air coming in from canada. we could see snow sticking around through saturday. joel?

closed over i-25, creating kind of a mess. police are directing all the cars back onto i-25, so if you're caught up in this, they're just taking you around and you don't have to wait for the light there. avoid that intersection if you can this morning, using 92nd to get accessory. no big volumes yet, southbound 25 coming into town as well. we are seeing added volume in the southbound direction of i- 25 as you approach i-70. across the metro, in the cleanup stages here at hamden and tam rack. watch out for that. other than that, 285 and 6th avenue, nice and wide open. drive times from the north,
