welcome back this wednesday morning. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. let's find out about the forecast because we are expecting a change to roll into the metro. >> we are going to really cool off tomorrow and we have a chance for snow tomorrow as well. today is mild, temperatures this morning really nice, 24 in denver, 9 in greeley, 21 in burlington, 17 in craig and 26 in grand junction. on the satellite and radar we

western slope and in the southwestern mountains. we have clear skies in denver, won't stay that way all day though. we are looking for rain and snow, and arctic air pushing in with this. we'll cool off and have a chance for snow, the southwestern mountains going to be hit hardest by this. some areas have up to a foot of snow, and we have a winter storm warning there. today 42 by noon, 43 by 2:00 then we start to get more afternoon. more in a moment. now let's check in with joel. we have been following a couple trouble spots to start out this morning but they are not on the highway. i-70 and airport boulevard, nice dry roads out there. then you have the slowing southbound coming into town due

we have a rollover on park avenue west at glenco. we had a water main break and that's been cleared as well, so good news this morning. we have breaking news in denver. somebody shot out at least 7 car windows overnight near 10th and julian street. >> shawn chitnis is tracking this story for us. >> reporter: that's right, this is one of the seven cars we were able to find. you may be able to see, it's this case. as you work your way down julian, there are several other cars that have that similar situation all on this side of the street. it looks like someone just drove down julian and decided to hit one car after the other, making sure there was some sort the windows.

happened and who may be responsible. we'll check with police to see, but again seven different cars all hit, shattered glass on the street, all on one side of the street primarily. it's likely something a lot of people are going to have to wake up to here, not realizing their car has been hit this morning. we'll check back with police and see what we can bring you on this story. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. >> that is maddening for people. thanks a lot. in denver a hit-and-run driver is on the loose right now after a crash near downtown. >> this happened near champa and park avenue west, and the scene is pretty active right now. jamie leary is live out there with more. >> reporter: we just spoke with a witness that happened to be a passenger in the jeep you saw there.

passenger side but fortunately that passenger was able to walk away from the scene. he said he was crossing the intersection, and they got broadsided by a white four-door sedan. he was not able to get a suspect description. the first thing on his mind was his buddy, the driver who picked him up from work. they were headed home when they were hit by that white sedan and we are told by authorities that sedan continued down champa so this is officially a hit-and-run. he is going to see his friend in the hospital, who is in stable condition despite how bad the car looks there. right now they are looking for a suspect driving a white four- damage. story. news. we continue to follow breaking news regarding north

a hydrogen bomb. three hours ago a south korean spy agency said it may have been an atomic bomb test. china, australia and france are condemning the announcement of a hydrogen bomb test. south korea held an emergency national security council meeting. >> with each nuclear test, the north's ability to develop a really effective weapon, war head, increases. >> reporter: the seriousness of what north korea says was a successful hydrogen bomb test. the reclusive regime released a statement that read in part: >> reporter: the televised announcement of the test was followed by images of the country's leader signing the order for it.

aware of seismic activity in the vicinity of a known nuclear test site, measuring 5.1 in magnitude and triggered a series of condemnations from leaders including south korea and japan. >> a hydrogen bomb is more powerful than the plutonium weapons used in previous underground tests and the real goal could be more attention from the west. >> what north korea really wants, the conversation, recognition and respect from south korea but even more from the united states. we are learning more about what prosecutors say was a plan to attack a high school. a 16-year-old girl will be charged as an adult. >> reporter: family members

douglas county courtroom after learning 16-year-old anna would be tried as an adult for a planned attack. >> we do this rarely and when we do, it's because of the information we have and the concern it creates for us. >> reporter: johnson plan add student. in court tuesday, prosecutors called johnson dangerous, saying she'd brought a map showing where people of the school would be standing on the day of the attack with the letters nbk for natural born killers. and she'd allegedly begun experimenting by hurting her pets, and purchased a bb gun to practice her aim. after being arrested, johnson told them she would still carry out the plan if let go. >> there is enough out there that people can conclude this

of extreme danger. >> reporter: the parents and students were stunned. >> i don't know what's going on with our kids but we've got to figure this out. >> reporter: despite the teen's age, they say justice needs to be served. >> this is not a case we want to guess wrong on, either for the individual or the community. >> a new hearing is set for march 30th and her attorneys could ask to move the case back to juvenile court. the other suspect is expected to face a judge next week. today the friends who bought the assault rifle used in the san bernardino will face a judge. federal authorities have put together a detailed timeline surrounding december's terror attack in san bernardino. there is a gap of about 18 minutes in which the whereabouts of the husband and wife killers are in question. authorities are asking for the

regularly are less likely to die from prostate cancer. researchers found patients who take aspirin regularly after being diagnosed lowered their risk of death by 40%. a lot of us may be feeling tired this morning but who are the most sleep deprived people in america right now? the answer is single moms. a new report found 44% of single mothers with children under the age of 18 get less than the recommended 7 hours of sleep a night. i have to be honest, i don't think i get 7 hours either. >> give a shoutout to the single moms, folks who work so hard to keep going every day. they lose sleep and it's tough. good job, folks, hang in there. lauren? the changes are coming tomorrow and tonight.

across the front range, 24 at dia and 17 in akron, 26 over in grand junction. as we head into the denver area, 32 downtown, 33 in westminster and 28 in aurora this morning. satellite and radar, notice there are more clouds and snow on the western slope right now. across the front range, eastern plains we are clear and dry. we'll stay that way today. however, we'll see the clouds start to increase throughout the afternoon. yesterday we had a lot of rain in california. that's shifted into arizona and new mexico. we have a new system here, a series of storms continuing to hilt california. we are on our third right now and we are looking at that in arizona to shift up toward us. for today, snow is heaviest in the southwestern mountains throughout the morning hours. then we have a shift up in the northern and central mountains throughout the afternoon and evening. denver increasing cloud cover

machine is cranking in the high country. we could see snow during the morning. could pick up an inch or two tomorrow, not a lot for us. country. overnight into friday we have a chance for snow as well. today we have winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for the southwestern corner, some areas getting up to a foot of snow. these are only advisories. 44 for denver today, 37 in greeley and 40s and 50s out east, a lot of 30s in the high country. temperatures will tumble tomorrow as the cold arctic air will come in and reinforce that low pressure system. we'll see more cloud cover 5:00. more melting today to clear some of that ice. friday we could see a little

in denver on friday, 1 to 2 on thursday. mountain areas will get more, foothills up to 7 inches or so accumulating here. let's check with joel. we should just enjoy this, i-70 and airport boulevard, nice dry conditions out there this morning. should be an excellent drive through the metro area. take a look at the drive to the airport, going to love it. southbound coming into town, speeds into the 60s. express lanes project. that will continue right as you get to u.s. 36 there. southbound 9 minutes from 120th to i-70. this is a look at the volume making its way down into town, southbound 25 from the mouse trap cam. this is just north of i-70 this morning, and you can see no yellow along there, plenty of space between those cars.

accident at park avenue west and glenarm but that's been cleared out of the way. in the high country, could be some lower visibility over vail pass this morning but the roads are mostly dry over the high mountain passes. new video this morning shows a dog getting rescued from an icy pond near salt lake city. the pup named tucker was on a walk with his family and he decided to go after some ducks. classic story. firefighters got him out of the pond and he was a little ashamed i think there, but the family says they want to thank the firefighters. he is doing fine. don't go on the ice after your dog. let the firefighters do it. getting a look at loveland's 2016 valentines stamp. thousands have them sent

right now the jet stream is directing all those storm systems in the ocean right at california. more rain today, heavy at times, worried about flash flooding in spots and more snow for the higher elevations. more rain in arizona into new mexico and utah. colorado will get some of that as well, and down in oklahoma and texas a little rain today. cooler temperatures in the midwest, in the 40s for much of the eastern side of the country. cold air is coming our way this weekend thanks to the big dip in the arctic air in the united states. enjoy our last mild day. security wait times at dia 15 minutes and all the lots are open. joel? seeing i-70 and genesee, flashing lights with road work going on, but nice light volumes and nothing to slow you down.

the drive to dia, i-70 inbound green and wide open. same situation southbound coming into town. thanks a lot. markets are down this morning ahead of the open, possibly related to north korea's claim of a hydrogen bomb test. then we have trouble for a company that had workers clocking out just to go to the bathroom. >> reporter: wall street tried to bounce back on tuesday. some think the weak start to 2016 could set a negative note for the year. there's a newburgher battle, for the cheapest deal at fast food restaurants. burger king has a five for $4 deal. customers get a bacon cheeseburger, small fries, four piece nuggets, drink and cookie all for $4.

w breaking news right now in a hit-and-run in denver. police right now are looking for a car involved in that hit- and-run this morning near downtown. >> it happened at champa and park avenue west. jamie leary is live at the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. right now we have clear traffic moving through, a little bit of debris here on the ground, some

i'll show you the scene earlier, a jeep cherokee that was the victim in this incident flipped over on its side. two people were in that car. we spoke with the passenger, who was able to walk away, but he said the driver of the vehicle, his friend who had picked him up from work, unfortunately sustained some injuries. that person is in stable condition at denver health this morning with injuries to his head and neck possibly. but the passenger said he didn't really know what happened but a car t-boned them as they were driving through the intersection here and he closed his eyes, then the next thing he knew they were on the ground. his buddy was talking to him but the passenger said they don't have a suspect description. he did see a white four-door sedan. >> just making sure my friend was fine. i was the passenger in the car upside down, couldn't figure

>> reporter: that white four- door sedan the passenger said he saw, police say continued down champa just behind me and they are looking for it. supposedly it has quite a bit of heavy front end damage so story. news. take a look at this el nio sierras. for the truckers, that means chaining up. for the skiers and borders, fresh powder on the slopes to enjoy. so is el nio going to affect us in colorado? >> coming up within just a few hours, overnight we could get it. and lauren has the latest on the this developing system. >> there is potential we see snow here in denver tomorrow and friday from these storm systems. there have been several rounds heading through california,

now some of those are making their way toward us. 24 in denver this morning, 28 in boulder, 7 in greeley and 25 in avon, 17 in craig and 26 over in grand junction. we have some snow on the western slope and down to the southwest. here in denver, eastern plains, skies are clear. however we won't stay that way today. we are looking for an increase in cloud cover today by noon with 42 degrees, then throughout the afternoon more clouds and fairly mild. changes could startover night tonight. joel? this is i-70 and genesee. if you're heading into the high country, traveling that direction, you'll like the mountain drive, at least for now. look at all the green we have here, those early earl icons cleared out of the way. no side street trouble as you're heading up, and take a look at these drive times, 9 minutes from 120th to i-70.

hour. i-70 either direction looking great as well. if you're getting in the car, turn on koa news radio 850 am and now on 94.1 fm to get traffic and cbs 4 weather together every ten minutes on the tens. we are following breaking news out of denver. check this out. someone shot out at least 7 car windows overnight near 10th and julian streets. >> shawn chitnis is tracking the story for us. kind of a mess out there, shawn. >> reporter: can you imagine if you live on this street, several cars when you come to leave, you could see at least one of the windows is smashed out. at least seven cars on this street, and there could be more in the area. i just spoke with police and they are telling me they have gotten several reports just in this part of the city. a closer look at the damage, denver police are telling us

who went through and was either planning to break into cars or just wanted to damage cars. and they are expecting more people to come forward and tell them about a similar situation as more people wake up and realize their cars are damaged. the first call was just after midnight when someone noticed this had happened to their car. denver police say at this point they don't have any suspect information and they hope as they learn more from other people targeted or hit by this, they may be able to figure out who's behind it. they do have police investigating and working on this case right now and continuing to gather more details about what happened. we'll remain on the scene to get a look at the other cars this morning. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news.

after north korea says it's tested a hydrogen bomb. we know there was a big seismic disturbance and here is why. the u.s. geological survey in golden measured this 5.1 magnitude earthquake in this area of north korea on the northern side of the peninsula there. there is skepticism about this claim. south korean spy agencies say it may have been an atomic bomb, which is less powerful than a hydrogen bomb. >> reporter: a representative from the white house says the u.s. cannot confirm a north korean hydrogen bomb test but is calling on the country's leaders to abide by international agreements. the announcement called the event a perfect success, citing

itself against u.s. aggression. the statement was followed by the release of a picture allegedly showing the country's leader signing off on the test. >> the real danger for the united states is whether or not north korea has intentions to demonstrate their capabilities as far as the pacific and certainly to threaten the u.s. continent. >> reporter: news of the event came after a 5.1 quake was detected near a known north korean nuclear test site. south korea quickly condemned the test, saying it's a threat to our people's survival and future u.s. ambassador to japan expressed similar views. >> we stand with japan in solidarity with no korean provocation. >> reporter: japan's military deployed reconnaissance aircraft to verify the north's claims.

north korea's fourth nuclear test. >> the un security council imposed weapons and financial sanctions against north korea since it first tested an atomic device in 2006. this drone crash last month during the ski world cup in italy was way too close for comfort, narrowly missing a competitor. now there are changes coming to the x games in aspen. >> reporter: the drone's near miss has others reviewing their drone policy. >> we don't allow drones here. it's a lot of safety issues. >> reporter: the drone ban is not going away any time soon. >> every now and then there's the privacy issue, too, capturing other people on hill. respecting others' privacy of course is a huge deal. >> reporter: but guests like to share video of the experiences on the mountain with friends

>> we have a lot of people with go pros. that's kind of where we're at this day in age. everyone loves to capture themselves on the hill. also we have a lot of safety issues with the lifts and with other people on the hill. >> reporter: in october, cbs 4 learned of a plan in the works to allow a commercial drone vendor to operate at copper but that deal fell through. this is video of the u.s. ski team shot by cape productions. that company would have become the first allowed a permit for video at ski resorts in colorado. but since they didn't get the faa go-ahead, that plan is on hold. for now drone video is banned. permitted. >> always have to have the selfies. the x games celebrate its 15th

>> reporter: kathy is a neonatal practitioner and learned she had lung cancer. >> never a smoker, no family history of it. >> reporter: chris draft is an nfl linebacker. when he married his wife, she was dying of lung cancer and had an idea. >> how about we help people to raise money for the fight against cancer. >> reporter: lung cancer survivors compete to raise funds for research. denver fans scored big. kathy raised more than $8,000 to win second place and a trip to the pro bowl. kim raised over $23,000 and earned the top prize, a trip to the super bowl. >> going to the super bowl is a cherry on top. ultimately what's keeping me alive is research. >> reporter: these survivors hope to change the face of lung cancer.

cancer being a quote smokers' disease. >> that was kathy walsh reporting. half the money raised goes to the chris draft family foundation. the lung cancer survivor chooses the other recipient. kathy chose the center for the study of lung cancer. today's wednesday's child is seth, a young man who we have met before. this science-loving kid still needs a family. science is his favorite hobby. he's fascinated by electricity and learned how to produce static electricity at mad science of colorado. he played with foam and fire, mixing chemicals to make bubbling concoctions. the 11-year-old wants to be an electrician, engineer or train conductor when he grows up.

telling everyone to have fun on the slopes. if you're skiing this weekend or any time soon, send us your pictures. we are starting off fairly mild with changes on the way. right now 24 in denver, 10 in greeley, 21 in burlington and 25 in avon, 26 in grand junction. as we look at the satellite and radar, already a little snow and a little more down south. we are looking at clear skies across the front range. see already some of the clouds building. we'll see more cloud cover today. take a wider look at what's happening, we have been talking about this for a couple days, several rounds of rain heading toward california. you can see the rain into arizona, new mexico and utah. we'll see the impacts of this one and there's another one out there as well. we have winter weather advisories and warnings for the southwestern corner, getting

snow, up to a foot in some areas. as we look here, they will see the bulk of that today and it's more widespread throughout the afternoon and evening. front range and eastern plains, what we'll see is more cloud cover today. we won't see any snow. overnight the snow continues toward the northern mountains, possibly in the foothills and south of the denver. tomorrow morning, chance for snow for the morning commute and we could see snow on and off throughout the day, clearing in the evening. then we see more potentially on friday. tomorrow about 1 to 2 inches in the denver area, not tapping into the up slope. maybe 2 to 3 inches or more and machine cranking. on friday. enjoy the 40s because with this system we have arctic air coming in and we are going to cool off. 44 in denver, 37 in greeley,

plains, a lot of 30s in the mountains and western slope. hour by hour, it's not a weather making day for the front range, 42 degrees by noon and in the 30s by 5:00. 35 in denver tomorrow, 28 on friday and 21 on saturday. maybe still a few flakes out there but clear skies on saturday. take a look at i-70, vail pass you can see the side streets here with some snow and ice. just be aware that's a possibility. southbound coming into town, speeds in the 60s. 10 minutes from 120th to i-70, and that's what we like to see, especially approaching the 6:00 hour. the mouse trap cam, panning to the right you can see southbound along i-25 here, still plenty of space with more volume heading in the eastbound

across the metro area, a couple trouble spots reported. one of them is from e-470 on the ramp to westbound i-70. watch out for that. looks like we have trouble in the eastbound direction of i-70 right on the approach to i-225. drive times from the west, in the eastbound direction, c-470 to i-25, average speeds 66 miles an hour right now. the big players are in las vegas right now for the consumer electronics show. we have some of the gadgets getting all the attention. >> reporter: technology that turns clip art into nail art, a high-tech pad that tells you when you're out of milk and an armchair that takes you for a ride. this is a glimpse into the future of consumer electronics and could seep into every part of our lives. for television, the new game is
