>> today we'll see this gradually clear out. we are starting with a look at i-70 and floyd hill, still some snow falling in that direction. roads are slick in spots and joel will have an update on that in a moment. satellite and radar, we still have snow in the high country and falling in the denver area, clearing out on the eastern plains. still some snow down south and that could stick around longer than northern colorado. foothills we have some heavier snowfall this morning. in denver it's been fairly light and breaking up in some areas as well. eastern plains we have some snowfall and along i-25 north you'll hit the heavier snowfall in spots and i-25 is going to be tough this morning. we have snow totals coming in, 5 inches in durango, golden

are most of the totals we have been seeing, anywhere from 1 to about 3 inches of snow. lots of winter storm warnings still in place for the southern parts of the state. front range could pick up would say. and we are looking at that snow to taper around noon if it lasts that long. we'll have cold temperatures to settle in, in the teens by 5:00. weekend. now let's check in with joel. you can see all the wetness on the roads here and that's owl going to turn to ice. watch out for black ice. a lot of i-25 near c-470 this morning. back in the high country, i-70 and floyd hill, we have chain restrictions and passenger

floyd hill over vail pass this morning. watch out for that. in town again just wet on the roadways leading to lower visibilities and slower speeds. a couple spots to watch for, i- 225 to i-70, that ramp is notorious. if that is part of your drive, tires. it's slightly banked and folks just slide right now. >> and this is a long, slow storm. jamie leary has a look at what we're dealing with. >> reporter: we are along i-25 outside the greenwood village city limits. you can see the traffic is moving pretty good right now, people not too cautious this morning.

because we saw some glaze off the road which has turned into frozen snow. it's starting to disappear as the slush is taking over. you can see the splashback too. but i can tell you within the city limits and along the highways we have plows. force. this accumulating snow as joel was talking about is freezing. it's creating a nice layer of ice along the roadways. even with the mobile weather lab, we have beastly tires that we'll show you here and we were even sliding around a little bit. leave yourself plenty of space because those roads are going to get worse throughout the day. jamie leary, cbs 4 morning news. >> and you can get weather updates through our weather on the go app. more smash and grabs adding

for the first time, police have an arrest. shawn chitnis is live this morning with more. >> reporter: we have been talking about smash and grabs but today we get to add a suspect in custody to the story. police believe this suspect was responsible for two smash and grabs at this strip mall, this computer repair store and asian restaurant in the strip mall here. they got the call around 2:30 a.m. when they found out about these two different businesses being hit by the suspect. police were able to follow the tracks of the suspect back to his apartment because he left the scene on foot. they say the tracks matched what they saw at another smash morning. the owners of the asian restaurant say they have been hit before and there was no cash in the restaurant but

that the suspect was able to get to. police are aware of that. we do know police are working on getting a warrant to go inside his apartment and see what's inside. in addition to these, we know there was one more they believe he's responsible for. and police say while it's early at this point, he could be responsible for many of the smash and grabs we have been reporting on, something they will likely investigate. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. today marks five years since the shooting in tucson, arizona. former congresswoman gabby giffords was holding an event with constituents when a man opened fire, killing 6 and injuring 13 others. giffords recovered but can only speak in short phrases after being shot in the head.

people are often nervous about going to authorities off fear of being reported. the ag's office says they won't be. tomorrow you could be $700 million richer, the biggest prize in u.s. history. we have gone 18 drawings without a jackpot winner and the next is set for tomorrow mountain time. the odds of winning are 292 million to 1. but somebody has to win, lauren. >> somebody at some point has to win and maybe it will be our office pool. it will be snowy and cold for the kids this morning, temperatures in the low 20s and icy in spots. on the way home it will be wrapping up but it will be very cold out there. we are seeing the wet roads turn to ice this morning. you can see the slower speeds out to the tech center, that little thin layer of ice may trip you up.

even on parts of i-25 it will be dicey as well. take it slow out there. we have snow in the high country. eastern plains you have cleared out a bit and we have snow in southern colorado as well, sticking around a little longer. as we zoom into the denver area, we had a lull and we are starting to see heavier snowfall. we could still get another 1 to 3 inches of snow throughout the morning and afternoon. it's strong in the foothills and up toward fort collins, greeley, still some decent snowfall. we'll see this stick around and clear out throughout the morning and early afternoon. southern colorado, we have winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in place. here in the denver area, foothills and parts of the high country, we have a winter weather advisory in place through 2:00 today, could pick

snow in areas. we'll see the snow stick around the front range and eastern hours. by 11:00, this will probably be mainly wrapped up in northern colorado, light flurries and snow in the foothills. denver all those skies are starting to clear but we could still get light flurries throughout the afternoon. overnight tonight we'll see snow in the mountains. here in denver we could see dense fog tomorrow morning, especially near river areas. then snow in the mountains tomorrow, driveway and clear here in denver with a sunny and cold afternoon. dia, visibility is down to about a mile. we have lower visibility in the foothills, down to about 2 miles in parts of the western slope. be extra cautious because we could see a repeat of that tomorrow. 24 in denver this morning, 28

burlington, 18 in craig and 23 in grand junction. for the five-day forecast, we are only in the 20s, teens by this evening. by saturday we're below week. take a look at northbound i- 225 past parker road, probably closer to mississippi now. you can see on the roadways varying conditions. it's a little more wet in the middle but a lot of this is now turning to ice out there, there. just beware there. we're seeing too good a speeds the 50s. 10 minutes from 120th to i-70, there. i-76 near 25, seeing a little bit of slowing. mouse trap cam, you can see

lakes and a line of showers with bigger thunderstorms from the southeast moving up to the northeast later on today. it's calmer in parts of the west coast, in the 40s in seattle and portland today, 58 in l.a. and drier out that way. we'll have snowy conditions throughout the weekend in the midwest and we could see thunderstorms along parts of the gulf coast as well. dia wait time about 5 to 20 minutes and all the lots are open. it's an icy drive out there pretty much no matter where you're at across the metro area. it's icy further west and south of town. this is a look from mobile 4 traveling along colfax getting onto 225 in the southbound direction. we have a reported accident in the southbound direction near 6th. so we're working on getting mobile 4 out that direction. the drive to dia will be icy, especially along the elevated

good morning, everybody. gary kubiak said for months when peyton manning was healthy, he was going to get his job back. a lot of people didn't believe his word. so manning will start january 17th when the broncos host the steelers or texans or chiefs. manning and the broncos need two wins at home to make it to the super bowl, and kubiak believes peyton is best equipped to get them there. >> i think it's about what i've seen and how far he's come. watching him practice today, i feel good because i know exactly where he's at right now. >> it's always more fun to be a part of practices and being able to play. beats you know, being on your own.

conditions. there on the right side of the screen you can see that. jamie leary is telling us arapahoe. >> reporter: that's right, alan. it's blowing every direction right now, 25 degrees out here in the mobile weather lab. the snow that was once wet is now freezing because of that. we were talking about the beastly tires on this rig here. look at these. even these tires here, they were sliding around on the roads. all the wet snow, the tires on the road, it's compacting that snow. there's a layer of ice underneath all this fresh snow, too. the glare is covered up by the snow that's starting to freeze

while these cars are carrying a good speed, it will slow down. roads are definitely icy and snow is continuing to blow here. no stopping whatsoever, so as that accumulates and tires push the snow down, you'll see a lot of ice under that snow. we'll continue to follow the centennial. good morning. we are off to a snowy start as we just saw. we still had icy and snowy conditions from the last storm system that hadn't melted yet, and we're adding onto that. the snow has been coming down at a good rate here recently. it did slow down for a bit. as we take a look at the satellite and radar, we have snow in the high country, parts of the plains and foothills. i'll start by zooming in here.

breaking up a little more. we have some pretty decent snowfall and add a touch of wind, making that blow around a little bit, creating low visibility. there is fog out there as well and it is icy in spots. be extra careful. as we head north, we have decent snowfall from the wyoming border into the denver area, filling in more at i-76 and i-70. we have reported 1.18 inches in cold creek canyon this morning, winter storm warnings still in place. high country, 1 to 3 more inches possible in the morning and early afternoon. some areas should clear by late morning. by noon today we have lighter snow, then we're in the 20s by 2:00. we're in the teens by 5:00 tonight with likely some cloudy skies here in denver. it gets cold tonight. we'll talk about that in a moment. joel?

getting a good workout here. i-70, that notorious ramp that is slick and tough and you can see the sheen along the roadway there onto 225. this is dangerous, and we have police there. i'm not sure if that's an accident or just telling folks to slow down. slow down through there. we have a car that's sideways. if you get going fast, that's what's going to happen to you. i-70 and genesee, this is the lower visibility lauren has been talking about. you also have tough road conditions that direction, traction and chain restrictions from floyd hill out to vail pass. take a look across the metro area, we have some accidents getting along i-70, especially the elevated portion of the

you can see conditions getting worse in the weather department. the dark gray is the darkest we have there, 285 and 6th avenue as well. turn on koa news radio 850 am and now on 94.1 fm for weather and traffic together every ten minutes on the tens. more smash and grabs this morning, adding to dozens that have plagued the metro area. for the first time, police have an arrest. these happened in englewood and this arrest adds a curious twist here. shawn chitnis has more. >> reporter: i'm standing next to the strip mall where this happened right by me, the computer store where we can still see the smashed glass. asian restaurant. they have already replaced their door with a wooden door. this is what we know in this

the call to come out and check out both of these smash and grabs. there was a suspect who got away but left tracks in the snow, and police followed him back to his apartment to make the arrest. they say those tracks matched what they saw in the snow at another smash and grab earlier in the morning, so they believe he's responsible for three just today. the owners of the asian restaurant say they have been hit before and the owner of the repair store says he's been hit as well. in this case there was no cash inside the restaurant but there were some electronics that the suspect got away with. police did arrest him at the apartment but haven't been able to go inside. they are working on a warrant to go in. three altogether potentially for this man, and police say it could be possible he's responsible for others that we have reported on. they will be looking into that for sure.

>> shawn, he lives in the area where we have had the other smash and grabs? >> reporter: that's right. we were told from police they were checking an address that may be the apartment he was at, which would be an interesting connection if he lived on the street where so many of these have been happening. that's something we'll wait to back to you. a denver man with a processions. thieves stole about $30,000 and collectibles. >> reporter: monday morning, warren's apartment, opened the garage door and pulled a car inside. some things were left behind but his laptop, ipod, xbox and statues were taken. worst of all, his ten boxes

>> steffan showed us a movie script he'd written and had a few more but they were on the laptop that was stolen. detectives are looking for the thieves. officers from district 6 and the gang unit are the first to get body cameras under a new program. we are expecting to learn today how they are designed to work and there are still questions about what police will store and what the media and the public will be able to see. we are learning more about two iraqi refugees arrested in a probe, one from sacramento and the other from houston. >> reporter: court documents reveal a 23-year-old sacramento suspect communicated over social media with an unnamed individual living in texas in 2013. in one exchange, the two allegedly discussed training and fighting overseas.

>> reporter: the sacramento suspect responds: >> reporter: a criminal complaint unsealed thursday accuses the sacramento man of traveling to syria and back again after fighting with a terrorist organization then lying to investigators about it. authorities say the citizen originally came to the u.s. as a refugee in 2012. >> this is an individual committed to going back home as an iraqi to fight what he believes is corrupt. >> reporter: the houston suspect is accused of providing material support to isis. the 24-year-old man entered the u.s. as a refugee in 2009 and granted permanent resident status in 2011. the charges reignited the debate on the campaign trail over admitting syrian refugees

peyton. you could be both technically. >> exactly. brock did a really great job. of course, it's peyton manning. they'll both do well. we have a look outside at some snow. this is i-70 and genesee, foggy and we have snow continuing to fall. we'll talk about the fog as well but first let's get to the snowfall. it's heavier in areas and we could still see a couple inches in denver throughout the morning. in the metro area, you'll see a couple pockets of heavier snowfall on the west side of town, north side of town and towards dia as well. to the southeast, it's breaking up a bit. you're not done but it's a little lighter at the moment. heading into the high country, you'll see some decent snowfall as well. up to the north along i-25, a lot of snowfall up this direction.

along i-76 toward fort morgan. let's take a look at the winter storm warnings for the southern part of the state, continuing throughout the afternoon and evening. this area could see decent snowfall throughout most of the day today. here in the denver area, we are still looking at another 1 to 3 inches of snow today. we have a wind chill advisory in place through 2:00 p.m. for right now it's in place and we definitely have snow out there. we'll see that stick around throughout the morning hours. by about lunchtime, we could be on the cloudy side with flurries left. southern colorado could be getting heavy snowfall at times, especially in the higher elevations in fact san juans. throughout the afternoon, denver maybe a few light flurries here and there but overall we'll be on the drier very cold. we're looking at snow continuing in the mountains and down south. still some mountain snow overnight and up to the north. we could have thick fog

for that, especially near the river areas. we have fog out there this morning toward dia and greeley and into the northwestern corner. be careful of that this morning. it is pretty thick in spots. 22 in denver to start, 28 in burlington, 21 in avon. temperatures will be steady today but as we head into the afternoon, they will drop into the teens by about 5:00. tomorrow 25, could be foggy to start the day, then sunshine after that. 32 degrees by sunday. joel? traveling westbound out i- 70 near brighton, this is what we're seeing for road conditions right now. we'll take you out west, i-70 and floyd hill, where chain restrictions and passenger restriction laws begin. you have a lot of snow and ice out there and the higher elevation brought lower

speeds in the 40s and 50s southbound coming into town, 11 minutes on the drive 120th to i- 70. that's not too bad. we expect a little more slowing out there. as you get into town, you can see a little less space between the cars. still taking things slower, allowing room between the cars a great idea. some slowing as you try to get up the hill there, c-470 getting past alameda could be tough. 6th avenue at wadsworth, we have a stalled vehicle. north of c-470 on i-25 southbound, 225 starting to see extra volume from parker road to i-25. take a look at this dark gray on the road weather index. so that's why we continue to watch this and caution you this morning.

have that snow sort of drifting and the ice along the roadways there. allow a little extra time and space and get to work okay this morning. a philadelphia police officer is in the hospital, lucky to survive an ambush last night. a man shot at his cruiser 13 times. >> reporter: philadelphia police commissioner and the mayor held a press conference at the hospital overnight, saluting the officer's actions. police say this ambush happened about 11:40 thursday night at south 60th and spruce streets in philadelphia. officer heart net was approaching the corner when the shooter began his approach on foot, walking and shooting a 9- millimeter gun, continuing to shoot into the cruiser window. we are told the suspect fired 13 shots and officer heart net did return fire at the suspect,

man who tried to escape on foot. >> it's amazing he's alive. he was shot three times in his left arm, significant damage to his arm. he's got at least a broken arm, significant damage to the nerves. >> reporter: the suspect was shot three times and caught by officers around the corner from the first shooting scene. his weapon was also recovered on the scene. the officer and suspect were taken to nearby hospitals and the mayor and commissioner stayed with hart net's family. he is 33 years old with five years on the force and has heavy damage to his arm, including bone and nerve damage. he was rushed into surgery and he is awake and coherent, we're

justin finch, cbs news. the mother of the affluenza teen is back in texas after video showed him partying after he killed four people in a dui crash. officers tracked them down in puerto vallarta after using a cell phone to order pizza. according to her son, she helped him get away from authorities and rented him and apartment in mexico. let's take a peek at school closings because we have a few this morning in this weather today.

here, powder horn with 6 inches, so a great weekend to go skiing. it will be chilly out there if you're going. by noon we could see light snow, mostly clearing at this point but still on the cloudy side. cold this evening, by 5:00 at 19 degrees and overnight we're down in the single digits. now joel is watching the drive. the story this morning is really the ice we have out there. it's just gotten cold through the morning here. we have seen the roadways really ice up and you can see i- 25 near u.s. 36 there, making your way in. that's what you're battling, and you have the sheen out there. that's just black ice. so we'll continue to watch this for you this morning. thank you. a little dog in massachusetts helped save his best friend. scotty and anna belle have

lives and tuesday they ran off into the woods when their owner had a medical issue. anna belle was missing. >> he'd bark, come forward me, and run away. he continued to do this. got close enough, i heard the female down the embankment stuck on a tree. she was trapped, surrounded by water, and it was all ice and steep embankment. she couldn't get back up. >> firefighters scooped her up and she's safe and sound. the officers say she was saved. and a girl who dislikes snow, thank goodness she is not in colorado. there you have it. that's how you might feel this morning. he revealed the first snow to
