what can you tell us about what happened? >> reporter: alan, police were here on the scene for about three hours, just now able to clear this spot and move forward as they continue their investigation, trying to figure out how these two men died in a car that had a wreck at this spot. this is just about 30 minutes ago as police are still removing one of the bodies from inside the car within the last hour there. you can see the car was destroyed when police found it. that's what it looked like when they came upon it. someone told an officer to check out this spot after noticing the crash. police called in the wreck around 2:00 a.m. but it's unclear when it happened. a reconstruction team was on the scene earlier along with a medical examiner. it looks like the car lost control and may have been speeding at the time. police were here managing the scene along with the fire

members here working this spot. they have been able to open it up now and move forward trying to figure out what happened. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. let's get to the weather because the wind we have been feeling is going to bring something else. >> the gusty winds are going to stick around again today. very strong in spots already, 21-mile-an-hour winds in blackhawk, mountain passes gusty as well. couple areas to watch out for, heading up toward the passes. the winds are warming up a lot of areas and we have high pressure dominating the western side of the country. so we have warmer temperatures this morning and 11 below is warmer than yesterday in craig.

media reported this news. there was no mention by the president or the republican party about the detention of 10 u.s. soldiers last night during or after the state of the union address. they were taken into custody after two boats drifted into iranian waters. navy officials say the boats had mechanical troubles while in the persian gulf. colorado lawmakers head back to work this morning and they are looking at harsh realities. there is a big budget problem. spending restrictions mean shortfalls could hit across the state, especially hard on education. jamie leary has more. >> reporter: while lawmakers are facing a whole new set of challenges, they get to do it in a newly remodeled senate and house chambers. unfortunately the restored

won't solve the spending restrictions politicians are facing this session. colorado's 100 state lawmakers won't have much wiggle room trying to find ways to pay for their ideas. today they will start jockeying over the state budget. among the many issues on the table, they are expected to have proposals to boost affordable housing in colorado. that issue is one the governor says continues to grow as housing costs rise. he addressed this issue in a press conference yesterday. >> people's wages have not kept up with the inflation of homes. real estate values have gone up, especially in places doing well economically. the cost of building materials over the last 10 or 15 years continues to go up much faster than people's wages. it's not surprising for the working -- for many working

had to do most of the work from outside the home. at least seven others were hurt including a firefighter. we are working to find out the extent of the injuries. tonight parents in denver can get questions answered after doctors diagnosed one person at miller arts academy with tuberculosis. there will be a town hall meeting tonight at the school at 6:30 and officials will answer questions about the infection. tonight someone could win that record jackpot worth $1.5 billion. that number could still grow today. the jackpot started at $40 million on november 4th. no one matched all six numbers since then, so the prize keeps growing. experts say the chances of winning don't necessarily

hookah are exposed to 125 times the smoke, 25 times the tar and 10 times the carbon monoxide as smoking a cigarette. no, i don't smoke. i'm just a little sick this morning, excuse me. however, scientists point out that more studies are needed because people smoke in different ways. there's a new resource to help people with kidney disease. the online test helps patients figure out their risk of kidney failure. testimony help people prepare for dialysis or transplant. a chicken clucking at you could mean that you are an attractive person. a new study in the journal of human nature says chickens prefer looking at beautiful humans. researchers had college students rate people on their looks and line them up in front of the chickens. turns out the animals were

the best looking. maybe that's where the expression cute chick comes from. let's take a look outside this morning because it is still windy out there, especially in the foothills and mountain passes. loveland pass has had gusts up to 50 miles an hour this morning. you can tell by the colors we have stronger wind gusts this morning and those will stick around through most of the morning hours. they will fade out but come back this afternoon and this evening. 25 in centennial right now, 39 downtown then 41 right now in evergreen. the winds are warming us up a bit. take a look at the satellite and radar, a little cloud cover out there this morning. we'll still see sunshine today, should be a nice day. it will be our warmest day of

for a while afterwards. we have sunshine today, maybe some cloud cover in the high country and foothills thanks to the winds. throughout the afternoon, conditions are mild except the winds in the high country and foothills. we should be calm and dry and western slope will be warm as well. overnight tonight, clear skies but tomorrow morning we'll start to see snow in the northwestern corner and that will take and in the high country throughout the afternoon. we'll stay dry tomorrow. this system looks to favor the northwestern mountains so we could get snow throughout thursday and friday. temperatures 53 in denver, 50 in boulder, 37 for greeley today, and some areas close to 60 today in the eastern plains. in the mountains, 20s and 30s and that goes for the western slope as well. moderate air quality today, still burning restrictions in

as we look at the forecast, noon today 48 degrees. get outside and celebrate if you don't have respiratory issues. by 2:00, 52 degrees. we are at freezing by 9:00 tonight, so it will be a mild day. tomorrow in the 40s, still fairly dry in denver but then on friday, late morning and early afternoon we have a chance for snow for us. then we have a chance for snow heading to the broncos game on sunday. take a look over the high mountain passes here, how nice and dry the roads are. those conditions carry up over vail pass as well. watch out along the side streets and access roads in the high country because those could be icy. and the winds here, as you head out of evergreen along highway 40 up to winter park, watch out for the possibility of blowing snow. across the metro, we have an

270 and we have an accident at the national western stock show boulevard. either direction north of i-70, either direction on i-25 looking good. we had a closure last night in the northbound direction of i- 25 from u.s. 36 to 84th and that's happening again tonight. a local company wants you to be part of history and break a guinness world record. this could be the world's largest sticker ball, made up of more than 150,000 stickers. yesterday workers from sticker giant brought the ball to the capital so people could add to it. they will weigh it today. and we have a sneak peek of the late late show. >> wear a wig underneath the hairline? want work out if i wear a wig

they have another system that's made landfall bringing moisture 57 in san francisco today. as we head toward the great area. we had a clipper move through yesterday bringing snow and some serious squall lines to areas. today the lake-effect snow ramps back up through thursday, some areas near lake eerie could see a foot of snow. this is going strong in this area. new york today only 30 degrees, that little clipper moving out. we're in the 50s in atlanta, and the great lakes and pacific northwest really the two areas most active across the country today. it will be cold in the midwest over the next couple days so pack that winter gear. joel? should be a great drive to the airport this morning. we are seeing clear roads on i- 70 and airport drive.

lost control of the vehicle and speed may have been a factor. this is on national western stock show complex. this morning colorado lawmakers head back to work and in spite of the state's growth, they are looking at harsh realities. there's a budget issue and shortfalls that could hit across the state, especially hitting hard on education. jamie leary has more as we look ahead. >> reporter: those 100 lawmakers today will dive right into the budget but the two parties have very different ideas on how they would like to see the books balanced. issues at hand, republicans want to issue bonds to pay for highway upgrades. democrats want to use a legal maneuver to avoid paying tax refunds.

wiggle room for the lawmakers. yesterday the governor answered questions about the major issues facing the state and our economy, and the need to look ahead and how to deal with more people in our state. >> we have been very successful the last five or six years in attracting entrepreneurs and building businesses which attracts workers. we have had some of the highest levels of migration we have seen in a long time. this is exacerbating the issues around congestion and traffic density that we have all known about, but they're clearly getting worse. the solution to those, additional lanes on the interstate or additional turn lanes, those all take a long time. we have to identify the source of revenue that's going to pay for that stuff as quickly as we can. >> reporter: the transportation

issues for the parties in balancing the state's budget. breaking news right now, 10 u.s. sailors held by iran are now free. the nine men and one woman left the iranian base earlier on board two boats on which they had arrived. the u.s. defense secretary welcomed the release, saying he'd like to thank the secretary of state john kerry for his diplomatic engagement on this issue. the sailors were taken into custody after two boats drifted into iranian waters between kuwait and bahrain. there were reports of spying but officials say the boats had mechanical troubles while they were in the persian gulf. the boats were returned as well. president obama in his final state of the union

the first time he ran for president, saying i believe in change and we are the change we seek. this despite the struggles and political gridlock which have marked his years in office. he even took a shot at the politicians in attendance. >> it's not too much of a stretch to say that some of the only people in america who are going to work the same job in the same place with the health and retirement package for 30 years are sitting in this chamber. for everyone else, especially folks in their 40s and 50s, saving for retirement or bouncing back from job loss has gotten a lot tougher. >> our political specialist took a look at the highlights from the speech. >> reporter: the president was clearly thinking about who his successor might be when writing this speech and at every opportunity, took veiled shots

st. louis is losing its rams, on the move to los angeles. and fans are worried at least one more team may be moving. >> reporter: the 21-year nfl absence in l.a. is over. with news that the rams will move back to southern california. >> it's more than football. it's history, a tradition that we didn't have for a long time. >> nfl owners voted 30-2 to allow the team to move from st. louis to l.a., giving the san diego chargers a chance to join the ranks. both teams can play in the state-of-the-art stadium in englewood, about 10 miles from downtown l.a. >> this is an opportunity for the ownership to reenter the l.a. market with a project we think is going to change frankly, not

lauren, we have all kinds of potential out there later this week. >> we do. today we have to get past the wind. it's very windy out there today, gusting up to 48 miles an hour near the passes and it's going to stay that way today. if you have to travel through those areas, mountain passes, highway 93, it will be nasty out there. the winds are helping warm us up a bit as well, and we have high pressure off to the west with warmer temperatures this morning. 11 below is actually warmer than it was yesterday morning in craig, 29 in denver, 27 in bolder and 21 in fort collins. anything from about 10 to 24 on the eastern plains. notice we have some cloud cover across the front range and parts of the eastern plains right now. some of that is filtering out, looking at mostly sunny skies. we could have a few clouds throughout the morning hours. wider look at what's happen,

72. 68th at brighton boulevard, they are cleaning up an accident there. southbound coming into town, speeds in the 50s and 60s, then dipping in the 40s. 10 minutes from 120th to i-70. drive times from the west, 12 minutes from c-47075. traveling c-470, that's just 12 minutes from wadsworth out to i- 25. many families across the metro area are struggling to stay off the streets. now housing programs are stretching their resources to help families find a place to call home. >> reporter: kyle collected toys since he was a baby but

he has his own room to keep the collection. >> i love my son with all my heart and it was heartbreaking to have to go through that and leave him because i couldn't provide for him. >> the family lost their home and was split up by homelessness. kyle shuffled between family members. >> i'm not going to lie, some depression kicked in when i was a man and couldn't provide for my family. >> reporter: waiting lists can run from several months to several years. >> that's why we're keeping the 60 day length of stay. it was 90 to 120 days. we are keeping 60 so we can serve more families. >> reporter: he remembers getting the call that his wait was over and a 2 bedroom apartment was available.

the number because i was so excited i kept messing it up. >> finally got a new start all because of access housing. >> the rents are increasing and wages are not. >> reporter: now the family is facing the next big challenge: finding a permanent housing placement that will take a rental assistance voucher a hurdle not easily overcome in the current market. >> i'll get all the information then tell them it's a voucher. no, we don't take that, you can't live here. >> it's a significant and difficult challenge they are facing. >> reporter: access housing maintains 27 transitional houses for low income families. even when the need is high, the program is feeling a funding freeze. they have had to sell a couple of those homes.
