vehicle and why he may have been on the train tracks to begin with. >> and residents calling for the the resignation of flint's mayor due to the water crisis. let's start with tracking the snow, chris. >> we had a fast little front coming through overnight and some of us picking up a quick inch or so. on the doppler, that front came through just after midnight. this is a closer view for you. northeast colorado really the focus for snow. there is snow in the mountains but it's starting to wane in the high country. northeastern colorado, light snow with pockets of heavy snow mixed in on the i-76 corridor right now. from fort collins to denver, the snow is starting to break

it is light but it is out there, and temperatures are hovering near freezing, making for a slick drive. a lot of attention coming up here with joel and the traffic report. this is where the action is on the south side of denver. highlands ranch toward castle rock, light to moderate snow with gusty winds in the 10 to 20-mile-an-hour range there. temperatures near freezing in the city, most of the state in the 20s to lower 30s. after the holiday with snow and wet roads, how is that affecting the drive? take a look at i-25 down through the bridges there, a wet drive with a lot of splashback this morning. that's going to keep speeds down as we get a few more cars out there. west of town, that's where it's a mess. c-470 right now, much slower

on the roadways as you get along the hogback as well, portions of 285 until you get out to kipling and wadsworth, then it turns to wet roads. high country, we have traction restrictions from idaho springs up over vail pass, chain restrictions in place as well. police call him the scream robber. myloh mason is accused of several bank robberies and attempted murder in the metro area, wearing a scream mask while doing all this. this morning he's expected to face a judge and shawn chitnis county courthouse. wanted list? >> reporter: yes, that mask made what was already a scary experience more frightening for anyone inside the bank at the time of the robberies. the fbi always said they

dangerous because they say he didn't have regard for human life. it's no surprise the reward reached $100,000 to find him, but there were no informants to help find him. last week investigators caught up with him at a motel 6 in thornton. he's facing several charges including attempted murder, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. mason is expected to be in court at 10:00 this morning. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. new from overnight, a man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle while riding without a helmet. police say he took a curve too and stanford. he was thrown from the bike and died on the scene.

blast in pakistan, at least 17 others wounded near the border on a road leading to afghanistan. the dead include police officers, civilians and at least one child. nobody claimed responsibility for the attack. new video out of iraq shows aircraft taking out alleged isis targets north of baghdad. iraq's defense min city says air strikes destroyed a number of vehicles. one of them was a car bomb they believe was prepared to be detonated. and the united nations reports nearly 17,000 civilian deaths in iraq between 2014 and 2015, calling the death toll staggering. it also reports a wide range of human abuses including children being forced into slavery. today the mayor of flint, michigan is heading to washington to push the white

outrage is growing over a lead water crisis as michigan's governor is set to deliver the state of the state address tonight. >> reporter: angry protestors in flint, michigan, calling for the arrest of governor rick snyder, as residents deal with lead water. in 2014 the state temporarily switched the city's water source to the notoriously dirty flint river. it was a cost-saving measure but the water was found to be highly corrosive flowing lead. the water source was switched in october but the damage to the pipes was done. the state is now using the water. president obama declared a state of emergency on saturday but more is needed and available. >> state of emergency only

twitter support tweeted about the failure but not many saw it. we have some snow out there. we got that right out there this morning. light snow to the north of denver, a little heavier on the south side of town this morning. that could be messing up your drive as we go into the next few hours. especially i-25 northbound into town. and west of town, i-470 and c- 470, we have accumulation on the roadways. that will make it icy and slushy as we are right around the freezing mark. if you're about to get in the car, turn on koa news radio 850

welcome back. researchers at the university of chicago now say catching up on sleep may help lower the rick of diabetes. they found the risk jumped 60% for healthy young men who were sleep deprived. with two nights of sleep more than nine hours, insulin levels returned to normal. scientists in europe say they have an ultrasound test to determine if ovarian tumors are cancerous or not. doctors looked at 5,000 cases and found the new technique improved the accuracy of a diagnosis. new recommendations are out recommending doctors to prescribe antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. the cdc wants to cut down on antibiotics for common

nearly half may be unnecessary. >> it causes antibiotic resistance, which is literally killing people in this country. >> the recommendations say antibiotics are necessary only when strep throat is confirmed or if severe symptoms last more than three days. the big question this morning, how long is this snow going to last? chris, you said this was going to be a quick blast. is that still the case? >> yes, if you sleep in, you'll miss it. that front came through just after midnight and we're already seeing the snow break up on the north end. there is some snow out there on the 76 corridor heading toward sterling and nebraska. fort collins may have flurries in the air but it's tapering off.

south ride of town, look at all this purple. palmer 2005, castle rock, highlands ranch and into the foothills, you typically do well with a system that comes out of the north and that's the case today. nearly a half inch from jim outside fort collins. the north part of the viewing area, a trace to a half inch, half inch to an inch across the city. this darker blue south side, 1 to 2 inches or even a little more. right now watch how fast this snow starts to end north to south. by 8:00, 9:00, it's just hanging in on the foothills. southeast colorado, you'll keep the snow a little longer. as we roll to the noon hour, most of the state goes over to partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies with sunshine for the afternoon walk. it will still be cool out there today, just 30s and 40s for

denver we'll get right around 40 with a little variation out there. 45 for wednesday and could be another quick shot of flurries tomorrow afternoon as another fast-moving system crosses through. low 50s friday and saturday, and i know you want to know about sunday. i'm working on that forecast but it looks like it changes from saturday. that's all i'll tell you. take a look at the high country. this is the eisenhower and johnson tunnel, traction restrictions in place from idaho springs over vail pass. chain restrictions over vail pass as well. this is a look at i-70, the rest area. this is the ramp out to the rest area, not the roadway itself. you can see the headlights moving through.

high country, lower visibility. heading along highway 40 out to winter park, a much better drive than what we have been seeing with all the winds. take a look across the metro. along 285, that's a tough drive as well. wouldn't be surprised if we have passenger chain restrictions in place there. c-470, slowing to get around that bend and make it up the hill. we have some accumulation on the highways. average speed now about 54 miles an hour but that's all going to start going down as we get a few more cars on the road and get that splashback. a man is in the hospital after police say he tried to beat a train across the tracks but lost. looks like things could have been a lot worse. it happened yesterday north of downtown san diego. a construction worker saw the

coming right at it, and rushed to help. >> another guy opened the door, tried to get him out. he was wedged in the door, knocked out. >> fire crews had to use the jaws of life to cut off the suv's roof and get that man out. last check his injuries are considered life-threatening. spacex's latest attempt to land a rocket on a barge in the pacific didn't go so well. after a successful launch, it came down softly but toppled over and exploded on impact. the company says one of the legs failed to latch to the platform on that barge. if you have to get out this morning, you'll endure some snow out there. jamie leary is live at i-25 and castle pines parkway. >> reporter: we said it was mild out, which it is in comparison to some of the stuff

but it's blowing like a mid- winter blizzard out here and the snow is indicative of a spring snowstorm. right there you see the ambulance along i-25 near castle pines parkway. it is very slick outside, i'll tell you. we don't know where that ambulance is going but all this snow is starting to accumulate on the highway out here. it started sleeting then started accumulating on the roadway just south of the metro area off i-25. again, this snow is definitely more spring-like bullpen it's making for some slick driving out there, tricky travel troubles out there. also highway patrol just entering as well, so definitely take it easy out there as you're headed to work.

start that file and be on the lookout for tax documents that should be rolling in. employers are sending w-2s by the end of the month, mortgage companies sending you tax documents by mid-february. a lot of these are available online earlier. gather the credit card summeries and review your accounts for deductions, maybe a charitable donation. use last year's return as a guide to what's missing. >> there never seems to be a shortage of scams but they do seem to be increasing. what can we do to protect ourselves? >> reporter: you're right. last year criminals stole information on nearly 400,000 taxpayers from the irs website. states are also on high alert, the filing of fraudulent returns that prompted turbo tax to halt e-filings for a period of time last year. governments and states are unveiling measures to help

filing early may be your best bet in prevents others from trying to file a return in your name. the irs, they love you but they're not initiating contact with you about your account through e-mail, text message or other social media. if you get an unsolicited e- mail claiming to come from the irs, don't open attachments or click any links, just forward it to the irs. if you're hiring a tax preparer, the irs is beefing up their systems there as well. only if you haved or authorized tax preparers have an irs tax preparer identification number. check the irs database to see if your preparer is actually credentialed. >> and we have had some bad days to start out the year but this morning the markets are looking up.

>> reporter: you do what you did the last two weeks, which is a lot of nothing. continue. this morning markets are up because we got expected data out of china that confirmed growth slowed but not by so much we should be worried. chinese market and european markets up, and the dow indicated 250 points higher this morning. most importantly perhaps, crude oil up nearly 6% this morning. we're keeping an eye on that oil market. >> thanks a lot. let's check the travel forecast now with chris. busy in the middle of the denver. a new storm moving into california, some rain out that way and snow possibly in st. louis. temperatures in the 40s for seattle and portland, 70 in phoenix and 23 in kansas city. getting a little snow in st.

tonight into tomorrow, 10 in minneapolis, 15 in chicago. the eastern part of country is on the chilly side today. the eastern part, east of i- 25, not too bad a drive. if you're heading to the airport, should be okay along i- 70 and inbound pea boulevard. watch for the elevated portion of highway. in the past five years, the only nfl teams to win 70% of patriots. this will be the eighth meeting during that stretch and the broncos won the latest meeting to years ago, and the last november. but the pats are the defending super bowl champs for a reason. >> everybody loves playing in a

5:30 this tuesday morning and we are dealing with snow in the metro area, some wind and slippery roads. >> jamie leary is out in the mobile weather lab as we get a look at conditions. chris talked about this quick blast of snow, jamie. tell us what's up. >> reporter: good morning, alan and britt. it is 29 degrees, average gusts 16 miles an hour, so it's blowing this snow. feels a little like spring but with the gusts, it's definitely coming downsideways, feels a little colder than 29. look at i-25 near castle pines parkway, it's hard to tell but there is snow accumulating right now. if your wipers are a little below power, you'll notice it.

this is good news. freezing temperatures aren't great for snow and driving conditions but it could be colder, hovering right at the 32-degree mark. front came in overnight, a quick blast of snow behind it. we are already seeing it end on the north side of the viewing area. up toward fort collins, still some flurries in the air. the i-76 corridor has a little snow this morning. it's mostly light but every now and then, you see the purple pockets there. this is where we expect the most accumulations, some places 1 to 3 inches of snow. this will clear out by mid- morning, 10:00 or so. joel, i know we have a combination of day after the holiday, wet roads and snow.

as fast-moving as this has been, part of the struggle is how varied the road conditions are. head into town, they're just wet. south of town, i-25 and founders, low visibility with snow coming down and it's accumulating on the roadways. we have an accident southbound direction that involves several cars. denver metro, see the dry air chris has been talking about, affecting the road weather index here. the drive along c-470, especially coming up that hill in the northbound direction, that's tough. there's been accumulation of snow as we get more volume out there, seeing that slow down. where jamie was, near castle pines, you can see just south of that, ridge gate and castle pines, we have this accident involving several cars. police are trying to get folks to slow down on the approach to

the middle of the nowhere. show you. car, turn on koa news radio 850 am and now on 94.1 fm for the latest traffic and cbs 4 weather together every ten minutes on the tens. this morning a mother is mourning the loss of her 10- year-old daughter who died in a three-vehicle crash in aurora. charges, though. the accident happened yesterday around 5:30 at 16th avenue and dell mar parkway. police say the girl was in a booster seat but it was not properly secured. she was in the white minivan, hit when it turned left in front of another minivan. the mother and two siblings were also in the vehicle and they were treated for what are described as nonlife- threatening injuries. the driver of the other minivan also was taken to a local hospital.

about the death of a new father- to-be who crashed his car while driving his wife to the hospital last week. it was west of fort collins and one of two children in the car was able to call 911 for help. >> paramedics were able to save the mother and two children but her husband died. investigators think he had a medical emergency that caused him to crash. there is now a gofundme account for the family with up to $47,000 already raised. this morning myloh mason, the scream robber on the fbi's most wanted list, is expected to face a judge. he went on a violent rampage across the metro area until he was caught. shawn chitnis is live at the

mason is facing a lot of charges. >> reporter: those include kidnapping, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and of course robbery. no surprise that he did make it to the most wanted list by the him. they also put out a reward of $100,000 in the hopes of getting someone to help find him but no one did. video and pictures of the suspects in masks including one from the movie scream created a chilling image for what it was like for someone in the bank at the time of the robberies. police say mason had no regard for human life. last week a s.w.a.t. team surrounded a motel 6 and

shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. today the search is back on for rider johnson, last seen leaving el dora on sunday. his vehicle was found parked near grosse reservoir on flagstaff road. yesterday teams searched but came up with nothing. we are learning more about the deadly shooting at arapahoe high school in 2013. a new report shows school administrators missed several opportunities to possibly prevent it. 17-year-old claire davis was murdered and the gunman took his own life a short time later. one misstep was not informing the threat assessment team that carl pierson had been viewing computer. >> reporter: it was a friday the 13th that brought tragedy to arapahoe high school. carl pierson came in with a

he killed 17-year-old claire davis and later himself. multiple reports were released today, including this one presented to the denver foundation and state legislative committee. it found three major failures: information sharing, threat assessment and systems thinking. after the shooting, arapahoe's security guard said she gave warnings about pierson that went unheeded. >> do you believe if the school district had listened to you, claire davis might be alive today? >> i believe she might be, yes, because i think there would have been more steps involved to help carl. >> reporter: her attorney says she feels vindicated. >> she is very hopeful the investigation will lead to reforms within the school district and applauds the parents for this very creative way of resolving the case. >> reporter: many other failures were reported to lead

joel will have traffic updates in a few minutes. nearly a half inch already on the southwest side of lone tree. the front came through overnight. look at the dry air already working, starting to work into the area. even though most of this snow is light, you can see the purple, little moderate bursts where it's trying to come down a little heavier. i-25 once you leave thornton, snow. also on the south side of town, douglas county, moderate snow foothills. temperatures around the state not bad, we're in the 30s. that's good news.

it will hang tough here on the south side of denver and into mid-morning. toward the noon hour, it's quickly out of here and most of the state goes to mostly cloudy skies and then by late afternoon partly cloudy skies. for the most part this will be out of here. temperatures today 30s and 40s about statewide, a few places in the southeast near 50. denver i have us around the 40- degree mark once we clear out and get that sunshine in here. on the five-day forecast, tomorrow afternoon a quick shot with flurries possibly coming through. 42 for thursday, low 50s friday and saturday. joel, just for you, check it out the broncos preforecast. pay attention to the wording here. changing, colder than saturday, possibly on the windy side. i can't commit to precipitation

the colorado attorney general's office is looking into complaints against angel service dogs of colorado springs. we first told you about families across the country who paid thousands of dollars for dogs which were supposed to detect peanut allergies for kids. some clients say the dogs were untrained. one mother in denver is out of a lot of money with no service dog to show for it. >> reporter: 6-year-old rory and sport were going to be great buddies. >> his heart was set on this. it was all he talked about for a very long time. >> reporter: robin shows pictures of the dog they thought could help keep rory safe. >> my son had gone into anaphylactic shock. >> reporter: robin went to angel as far service dogs in colorado springs. >> i don't know other parents that go in every night to be sure their child is still

>> reporter: cell phone video shows her taking the dog into a supermarket to be sure he could detect nuts. >> i had her handle the dog because it wasn't my dog. >> reporter: former angel service dog trainer catherine ross went with her. she didn't know the dog but wanted to be sure the pup was capable of keeping robin's son safe. >> you're not supposed to guide a detection dog. they're supposed to to go freely and alert you. >> reporter: the dog went past bins of nuts but never acknowledged them. even a 3-pound bag of peanuts didn't cause the dog to pause. >> i was shocked at that time that he even being five feet away wasn't showing any change in behavior at all. >> did he ever stop at a bag of peanuts? >> no. >> i grabbed his leash and said, here is your dog back. i said, i want all my money

>> reporter: the owner of angel service dog sent us this video which she says shows a different story about the same dog. through an attorney, she says this shows sport being trained and detecting nuts. in a written statement, she said robin failed to follow directions after receiving the dog and says another family has since had success with sport. >> we don't look at pictures of the dog anymore. >> reporter: four months later, she's still waiting for her $17,000. her son has given up on ever getting sport. >> tonight at 6:00, a closer

wyoming. that's up here where you see no snowfall. a quick moderate burst right now from about longmont to eerie and down to brighton, extending through dia. they are deicing planes this morning. we could get another burst as the snow band rolls through, the heaviest snow by far on the south side of town, northern douglas county with places nearing an inch of snow. snow-packed roads on i-25 and that's making for a tough drive metro. certainly is. c-470 along i-25, we are starting to see all the trouble. we have a lot of volume as folks travel down from colorado springs into denver. founders, you can see this collecting on the roadways. this is naturally going to slow things down. we have an accident southbound i-25 near castle pines parkway.
