,, ,, our drive to the championship continues. i'm britt moreno. i'm alan gionet. big game on sunday. here's what's happening today. i'm live in douglas county all morning. we are following a court case. one of two teens accused of making threats to call staff high school. the latest one cbs4 this morning returns. the snow has been falling in parts of colorado. it almost looked like a christmas card. what can we expect as we head

>> a big weekend for certain. all eyes will be on colorado this weekend to see the afc championship. we will hear some of the trash talk already going on. we have a changing weather we are talking about this we can. in the meantime, some awesome weather. >> let's get a vitti chris spears who is our guide to be. you will get all the applause. the weatherman likes to take credit for good forecast. right now, a couple of light snow showers or flurries in our far eastern plains. these are very light if they are reaching the ground. they will go away shortly as we roll into the morning hours. the story this morning is wind. berthoud pass is a 1 mile per hour gast those gas. 36 in burlington. a little chilly if you are heading out that way. let's check in with one of our weather watchers.

he is an eyelid on the far north eastern plains. a little breezy out that way. areas from the foothills to the kansas state line. mild, 20s and low 30s because of westerly down sloping wins. a little cooler in the high country. teens and single digits for the most part. gunnison is below zero. three below in alamosa. for denver, you heard alan say a couple of awesome days ahead. you will want to stick around and see this five day forecast. if you awesome days starting today. mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 40. we warm it up and then a big change comes on sunday. if you see that and you don't want to stick around here, you want to headed to the high country. take care, we have winter driving conditions. coming down there as you get to the eisenhower tunnel. we have a chain restrictions in place eastbound to the tunnel. also over the vail pass. in the denver metro area, that earlier trouble spot we had a

nor to the i-70, light volume. across the denver metro area, the express lanes project is calling slogan either direction between us 36 and i-70 along i- 25. an accident that included a fuel spell on mlk here that is slowing down in both directions. one of two teenage girls accused of making threats against students and staff at mountain vista high school will make her way through the legal system this morning. jamie leary is live in douglas county at the justice to center. this girl's attorney is fighting to get her case back to juvenile court i understand. >> reporter: that's right. 16-year-old, brooke higgins once again will appear in adult court this morning. the purpose of this morning's hearing is what's called a reverse transfer hearing. they are going over the logistics, the upcoming reverse transfer hearing. this is important for her attorneys because the reverse transfer hearing that is coming up will determine whether or not the judge's decision to put her in adult court could be reversed. ultimately, what her attorneys

it was just last week that brooke higgins was seen here, charged as an adult officially last week. two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. the week prior, the second 18 connected, 16-year-old, sienna johnson, also charged as an adult with the same felonies. higgins and johnson were arrested on december 12 on suspicion of conspiring to kill students and staff at mountain vista high school and highlands ranch. authorities say the plot was discovered after someone texted a tip line. since the legal proceedings began in this case, we have learned only bits and pieces of the mindset of these two girls. higgins reportedly had a fascination with the columbine shootings. her attorney said this is just a thought crime at best and has been trying to distance higgins from sienna johnson. for both girls, the reverse transfer hearing will not take place until later this spring that this morning they will go over the logistics of brooke

at that point, if they are not transferred back to juvenile court as her attorneys want, then we may get the full details of this case. that is what we're waiting for. this important procedure hearing this morning will determine the outcome of the reverse transfer hearing leader the spring. we will follow this on morning live in douglas county, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. leaders with the littleton school board we hear from experts today on the shooting at a arapahoe high school into this dish 2013. this comes just days after report on how the school district responded and how it did not act on warning signs. shawn chitnis is live this morning on what we can expect. >> reporter: good morning. even though that report has been out for a few days, this will be our first chance to have those experts talk to school leaders and be in a public setting. we will get a chance to hear them deliver their findings in that report.

board leaders for the first time since that report came out on monday. the report went on to say that the shooting may have been prevented. it said high school leaders dismissed warning signs of a troubled student that was a threat. that student killed one of his classmates, claire davis, before taking his own life. that 141 page report from university of colorado also said that the school needs to keep more detailed and easy to access records on 18-year-old, karl pearson. tracking the concern some had over him may have let someone stop him from coming into school that day back in december 2013 with a shotgun, machete and homemade bombs. we should be able to hear from those experts during the day. they will be talking to members of the media but then will go before the board of education in the afternoon. live in littleton, shawn chitnis, cbs4 morning news. today, a federal appeals court here in denver will look into utah's only to be banned. utah attorney general is

decriminalizing the practice. the case comes after that tv show, sister wives, it features a family living out polygamy. >> if you are good with one marriage the figure you would be good with two. i think i would be good with four. >> the browns filed a lawsuit against utah's ban on plural marriage. state attorneys say do not plan to prosecute the tv stars if the law stands but want it to stay on the books. >> today, the woman who both visitors. the chief will also see a hand surgeon because of torn tendons jennifer brice has the latest on this attack. >> reporter: with a bandaged hand, denver's fire chief is back at work and healing from several stab wounds to his hand and leg. chief eric tade said he was randomly attacked inside his car tuesday afternoon just headquarters. spirit i'm in my car and the next thing i know, i have

>> it was very unusual. it was a very surreal experience. >> reporter: the chief was in an unmarked city car on his phone, stopped at a traffic light when marlene rodriguez allegedly got into his car. >> probably the scariest thing was being trapped in being restrained while it was going on. >> reporter: the chief can't say much about the attack because of the investigation but he does say he does not know the suspect. spirit this is the first time i'd ever seen her. to the best of my knowledge she's never been around here or had any incidents here. >> reporter: rodriguez was found several minutes after the stabbing. she is being held on the investigation of first-degree assault. >> motive has been a big question among folks. at this time it does not appear that chief tade was targeted because he is a fire chief or a public safety official. >> reporter: the assault appears to be random and unprovoked. the chief said his car does have autolock doors but because he was not driving 15 miles an

,, ,, in today's healthwatch, a new warning for pregnant women. the cdc said women should get screened for a new mosquito virus if they have traveled to latin america. women with confirmed cases have been to brazil, columbia, venezuela, el salvador and the caribbean. doctors say the zika virus can be passed along to their babies and is now linked to birth defects like underdeveloped heads and brains. the cdc said at least five women in the united states have confirmed cases. we have an update on a little girl who is getting support from around the world. you may remember sa'fyre terry. she was severely burned and

that all she wants for christmas was cards to fill her tree. her wish went viral. now she has received more than 2 million cards. they are all sent to a warehouse in new york where she visits with her aunt. >> to see the hope that she is given me and given the world. that is all we want. people to believe that no through anything. that's our motto. >> toys for tots is looking for volunteers to help sort through the mail with more coming in every day. they say there is no way of telling how long this will go on. thursday morning, let's check with chris spears. it feels like spring outside. it will be a beautiful stretch of weather. very springlike especially into the day on friday into early saturday. a few lingering snow showers on the far eastern plains.

they are so light, radar is not really seeing them. 20s and low 30s this morning for all of our major stations on the eastern plains. a nice down sloping rain coming off the higher elevations, warming is up a bit. colder in the high country. single digits and teens. 23 in cold creek canyon. 20 on the east side of franktown. 25 in rist canyon outside of fort collins. here is the future cast. if you are mountain snow showers. they will come to an end and so will the couple on the eastern plains. why this afternoon and evening, we have mostly clear skies statewide in a gorgeous 36 hours lie ahead. first, if you are traveling or have friends and family in the east, they are getting ready for a pretty significant storm. it is right now outside of st. louis down through little rock and eastern texas. at storm water gather strength

tomorrow, it starts rolling onto the east. look at all the watches, warnings and advisories. this is all for wintry precipitation from little rock, memphis, nashville, all the way to the mid-atlantic. baltimore and washington dc are under a blizzard watch for wins over 40 miles an hour and 1 to 2 feet of snow. they will be crippled for sure if that materializes. 30s and 40s today on the eastern plains. 41 in denver. the five day forecast looks like this. go skiing tomorrow if you are skier. it will be perfect for that. changes sunday around the broncos game. park. it should be a perfect day for that. a look from the eisenhower tunnel. snow that chris was just talking about. you can see the plows are out in full force making sure the snow is plowed and the roads are treated. there is a thick layer of ice along there. that is what you'll see over this high mountain passage. the same thing over vail pass. chain restrictions in place in

us 6 over loveland pass. look the higher when is showing up on the index as well. here we are across the denver metro. we have this road closure on mlk due to a fuel spill. that is in both directions. an accident on 21st. word that the overnight construction has been picked up and moved out of the way, northbound around i-25. we will should see some of that purple disappear. we are seeing some slowing as lanes project. up to the boulder turnpike. the good news as you get from superior out to table mesa, the paving is done and they are ready to do testing along the express lanes. just a that portion is free for the next couple of weeks so you can try it out. new video shows a crash in brazil. another driver captured this on a dashboard camera. you can see a truck flipped several times.

according to the financial industry, regulatory authority or been rock, fraudsters are also going after people of all ages they are looking at ones who are college educated, have higher incomes and some financial knowledge. i think they're trying to exploit the fact that those folks think they know better. they also are looking at those who may have had a recent health or financial change your promises of high returns with little or no risk are the classic red flags. the sec also warns that investors should be careful about solicitations via social media. if you see a tweet mentioning you, a direct message or email or any other's unsolicited indication regarding an investment opportunity, please use caution. >> are these scammers highlighting a certain products,? >> because interest rates are

still peddling the promise of higher interest. they are looking at these things and they call them, interest-bearing promissory notes. the count them as an alternative to a cd. these notes are marketed almost exclusively to sophisticated or corporate investors. not to individuals. there has also been a rash of scams related to real estate. this as the market has firmed up. many of them are looking at peddling these nontraded real estate investment trusts. timeshare resales and something called brokered mortgage notes. these types of products are often there's often carry risk. if you believe you defrauded or been approached by something that seems shady, file a complaint@sec.gov/complaint. >> jail, i've got you here. i need to ask you about the markets. yesterday was insane. it feels like we're not on this bust, most of us. people are profiting when we're not. >> reporter: that's an interesting thing. i would say that individuals

>> reporter: good morning. 16-year-old, brooke higgins back in front of a judge in adult court this morning. the reason it is so important is because counsel looked over logistics of an upcoming hearing that could determine the fate. that hearing called a reverse transfer hearing. the reason that hearing is also important is because that's the time where a judge will decide whether or not brooke higgins will be charged as a juvenile. today, they will go over what that hearing will look like. it was just last week the judge decided higgins should be charged as an adult. the 16-year-old connected to this case, the other one, sienna johnson, is also charged as an adult. we have learned its and pieces about both girls mental states last week. prosecutors discussed brooke higgins phone records which showed a fascination with the columbine shootings. higgins attorneys have since tried to distance her from the

last week in court, also discussed for today's agenda was a mental health evaluation. if that does come up, that will likely be closed hearing and could influence the bond of brooke higgins which is currently set at $1 million. that is still to be decided but we will follow this case live in douglas county. jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. a warning of her students at the university of denver. the school said someone fondled another person overnight. that happened near the intersection of high and wesley , just blocks away from campus. the suspect is described as 6 feet tall, light-skinned, college aged and wearing a hat with flaps over the years. please want to find the man behind an attack in loveland. he chased down a woman and beat her. this was caught on camera along west 29th street. stan bush shows you what detectives want you to see. >> reporter: it was 2:30 a.m. the woman in this video attacked sean peters wife on a break from her night shift. tackling her in a parking lot

>> if she did not fight back the way she did, is only speculation but there's a very very bad situation that happened, absolutely could've been much worse. >> reporter: she fought off the attacker after repeated assaults. peters said they agreed to let police released the video to the public because the investigation had gone cold. >> i have no doubt that he's going to do this again. >> reporter: police also released in this sketch, for a stick built white man in his 20s with a short light brown hair. hours before the attack, another woman called 911 about a similar suspect in a black suv who was stalking her. >> investigators are fairly certain they are the same man. >> reporter: investigators hope someone recognized this man, his movements, his behavior, even his clothes to help them arrested. >> you see the video. you see what he's done.

he needs to be off the streets. >> stan bush reporting. >> police said there are no other reports of assaults with that means description. it was an emotional night of basketball in colorado springs. a player just lost his parents, along with a niece and nephew to a fire. he suited up for csu against the air force. the four members of emmanuel omogbo's family died early tuesday morning in a maryland suburb of washington dc. investigators say their rental home had no working smoke alarms. tom mustin was at last night's game. >> reporter: emmanuel omogbo dribbled the ball in pregame warm-ups and tried to concentrate on basketball. >> he's handled it than most people around him. he's trying to be strong. >> reporter: the csu junior basketball player lost his parents and twin two-year-old niece and nephew in a house fire in maryland. >> you knew immediately if anyone was in that house they were gone. >> reporter: emanuel traveled

force in colorado springs. he told his coaches his parents would have wanted him to play. ross hodge said the grieving player has been an inspiration to his teammates. >> his biggest request is he has not wanted to be a distraction to his teammates and to the program. again, that speaks to what type of person he really is. >> reporter: he entered the game to applause from fans on both side. >> i am pulling for him. i hope everything works out for him. >> he is doing it with a heavy heart i'm sure. >> i hope airs force winds but i was still have my heart for csu. >> reporter: air force wanted to honor his family before the game >> he respectfully decline. i don't want it to be about me. >> reporter: on this wednesday night in colorado springs, a grieving young man with a long road ahead made his parents proud. >> keep him in your thoughts and prayers. that's all we can do about now. >> that was tom mustin reporting.

people are getting ready as the weather is set to make a mess. >> reporter: people in the dc metro area got a bitter taste of what's to come.inch of snow grounded traffic to a halt wednesday night. among those stuck in the mess, president obama who endured an hour and 12 minute ride from joint base andrews to the white house. slick roads led to collisions, pileups and even spin out. >> i thought as soon as i got on the road that this would be a bad idea. >> reporter: righties storm is forecasted to bring blizzard- like conditions to dc, baltimore and surrounding areas. pummeling the area with 12 to 24 inches of snow. >> we have asked for additional national guard vehicles. and we will be prepared to ask for personnel. >> reporter: ahead of what forecasters say could be a paralyzing winter storm, road crews began filling trucks with
