we start with breaking news an off duty jefferson county someone shot him. two men tried to rob the off duty deputy. >> still a lot going on with this story. shawn chitnis is live with the latest this morning. >> reporter: i'm just a few feet away from where this happened. this is the parking lot of the complex with the shooting happened. i can see there are some aurora police still on the scene to keep an eye on what's going on here. we are waiting for an update on the condition of the deputy. last we heard he was in serious condition with life-threatening injuries. this morning police are still looking for a second suspect. they were searching for hours overnight and kept looking around the neighborhood near 7th and buckley. police had the help of other agencies in the area to help

denver police used a helicopter to search from above but they have stopped and police tell us early this morning they don't this area. investigators say the two men were trying to rob this off duty deputy while he was in the parking lot. they shot him twice but he was able to shoot back, injuring one of the suspects. place later caught that teenager and he's at the threatening injuries. one witness tells us he heard six rounds go off and went to see if he could help. >> i heard gunshots, came running outside, around the corner saw two guys running from a guy that was on the ground. >> reporter: police tell us the second suspect they are looking for is a black man with a brown jacket. there is a reward for $2,000 for any information that can lead to an arrest. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning

>> thank you very much. let's check the forecast this morning. >> lauren is tracking that weather for us. good morning, live look outside right now, checking out pretty conditions here in denver. fairly mild, a little bit of a breeze this morning. let's take a look at the satellite and radar, looking at clear skies for the most part. we have a few clouds out there this morning, pretty lovely. we are a little warmer in denver, 28 in denver and 27 in boulder, 18 in fort collins, 17 in burlington. high country, 17 below in gunnison, 2 in aspen and 16 in grand junction. we have 28 downtown, 28 in englewood and we were 19 downtown yesterday at this time. looking at the hour by hour, 48 by noon, 51 by 2:00 and by 5:00 we're in the 40s. we have some warmer weather on the way and we'll talk about the weekend as well. now let's check in with joel. been a pretty good start

we still have some cones up for the express lanes project but those will be moved shortly. we'll have some new cones tonight. u.s. 6 and sheridan here, should be a straight shot. there's the slowing either direction at i-25 due to the express lanes project. zooming in, we have a full closure of northbound 25 between lincoln and c-470, starting 11:00 p.m. tonight till 4:30 a.m. tomorrow so they can partum signage. ten men were arrested in a major sex trafficking sting in colorado. today those men will be in court. jamie leary is tracking this story for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, alan. there are ten men charged in connection with this case, two school employees included. one of them was a teacher at denver's warren village. he'll appear here this afternoon before a judge. warren village is a self-

for low income families. on site. that man, david hocker, was hired as an elementary schoolteacher for that early learning center. the other man, an employee for the warehouse district, he had no contact with children. hocker allegedly answered the ad set up by state patrol to have sex with an 11 and 14-year- old girl and paid an undercover officer $300 and was immediately arrested. the president and ceo at the learning center said prior to his arrest, everybody thought he was doing a great job. there were 106 children where he worked. >> he was working with children about 5 to 8 years old, and seemed to be doing a really great job. so very shocking to hear this news. >> reporter: three of the ten men charged in this case appeared yesterday in court. hocker and the second employee

formal filing of charges scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today. jamie leary, cbs 4 morning news. happening tonight, our jim benemann is going to be talking with the president one on one. one of the topics of discussion will be health care. this is a preview of what you'll see tonight on cbs 4. >> reporter: the white house wants to remind us that any american who does not get signed up for health care by the end of the current enrollment period faces an average fine of $700. the president is so interested in the progress of the affordable care act, he's invited us to the white house to talk about it this afternoon. the administration is promoting a friendly competition between colorado and 19 other states with health care exchanges. the state that enrolls the most people by the deadline gets a personal visit from the president. we'll ask him why many who

facing another year of much higher premiums, even on high deductible plans. even the president said obamacare can be improved. so we'll ask him how he'd do it, and if he wonders if the landmark program will be repealed if a republican wins the white house this fall. and we'll ask for his prediction on the super bowl. we'll find out if colorado is a swing state this fall has any impact on his pick. look for my live reports coming up later today on cbs 4 news at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00. this morning donald trump says he'll boycott the next republican debate set for tomorrow night. right now ted cruz is offering a challenge to trump. >> this race is a dead heat between donald and me. we are effectively tied in the state of iowa. if he's unwilling to stand on

,, welcome back. this morning, new warnings about the zika virus. the u.s. virgin islands and dominican republic are now on the list of countries pregnant women should avoid. the virus is spread by a mosquito not present in the u.s. pregnant women can spread this to their babies and it's linked to birth defects like underdeveloped brains. if you feel like you need an extra big cup of coffee this morning, everybody here raising their hands, a new study says go for it. researchers in california say caffeine every day does not lead to extra heartbeats and say common products like coffee, chocolate and tea could have cardiovascular benefits. today is national chocolate cake day. how amazing.

there's a few clouds and that's mostly cloudy skies, few clouds, not a bad day. wider look at what's happening across the country, we have a system making landfall in the pacific northwest. we're going to stay dry for the next couple of days. we are looking at mostly sunny skies today, really nice out and there. it's nice outside, not too bad. then overnight, skies are clear, maybe a few clouds. tomorrow the winds pick up a little more and we could have the development of a mountain wave cloud. it will be a little more windy tomorrow too. temperatures today, getting into the 50s, 52 in denver, 43 in greeley, 50 in fort collins and 51 in boulder. high country a lot of 20s and 30s, and western slope as well. eastern plains warm today, lots of mid- to upper 50s, even 60s in the southeast.

signage northbound i-25, closed from lincoln out to c-470 from 11:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. tomorrow. new video shows a moose tangled in a backyard swing. he was so stressed, they worried a tranquilizer may kill it. they had to taser him and you think tangle him. moose can get pretty unfriendly, and the homeowners admitted to putting a salt lick outside the home to attract wildlife. parks and wildlife released the video as a reminder, don't leave food out to attract wildlife. workers at the denver zoo are mourning the loss of sally the orangutan. vets could no longer treat her cancer and she was put down on sunday.

welcome back. we have rain showers right now off the coast of new york there, getting some light rain in areas. in the southeast, we have heavy rain in florida. looking at thunderstorms to stick around through tomorrow, some creeping up into the carolinas and georgia. most of the nation's midsection is very dry today, temperatures a little better in parts of the midwest.

have a new system that's made landfall, bringing rain that way. across parts of the rocky mountains and into the plains, there could be a bigger snowstorm monday and tuesday next week. we're keeping an eye on that for you. let's check with joel for the morning drive. excellent start to the morning commute. if you're heading to the airport, maybe come coming from boulder into town, looking good. look at the drive to the airport, i-70 inbound along pea, should be a straight shot for you. finally gets a chance to see gains in the market and apple could be facing down numbers. >> reporter: employers added new jobs in 36 states last month. california, texas and florida saw big gains.

the dow ending up 282 points and nasdaq up 49. apple is preparing for its first sales drop in 13 years. despite record-breaking revenue for the last three months of 2015, selling 74.8 million iphones, but sales showed some of the slowest growth since the 2007. the tech company's forecast in its quarterly earnings report says revenue could fall 8.6% in the first quarter of 2016. and u.s. home prices are on the rise, reaching and all-time high in four u.s. cities, according to to the latest numbers. those gains are fueled by hiring growth, low mortgage rates and a shortage of houses on the market. for more go to

,, ,, breaking this morning, one suspect is still on the loose after an off duty deputy was shot in aurora. >> reporter: overnight police decided to stop searching in this area, although they are still on the scene at this apartment complex and parking lot where it happened. we know some officers are still

continues for the remaining suspect who police think are now somewhere ems. this started around 7:00 last night when an off duty jefferson county sheriff's deputy was approached by two men. he was in this parking lot near evans and buckley in aurora. investigators say the two men were trying to rob the deputy. the suspect shot the deputy twice but he was able to shoot back, hitting one of the suspects. police were able to catch one teenager injured in the shooting. he was taken to a nearby hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the deputy is still in serious condition this morning. one witness nearby heard several gunshots and says the deputy was in pain when he tried to get there. and so police are looking for that second suspect. we are told the description is a black man with a brown jacket, and they have a crime

information that can help in the arrest. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. >> thank you. we'll keep following that and track what happens with the other suspect out there. let's get to the weather. good morning. we are off to a nice start this morning, live look towards mile high this morning. we are getting excited about the super bowl, just over a week away. look at what's happening outside this morning, 28 degrees in denver, 14 in limon, grand junction. from the satellite and radar, few clouds out there to start the day. overall it's fairly nice outside, temperatures a bit warmer than yesterday as well, and we'll have a warmer sunshine. pretty nice january weather. noon today, 48 degrees and we're still in the 40s by 5:00. by 9:00, still above freezing. we have a nice warmup on the weekend. we'll talk about that in a moment.

take a look outside, u.s. 36 and pecos. either direction on the boulder turnpike, starting to load up a little bit but nothing to slow you down. broader picture, it's green there, 76 southbound coming into town as well. slowing through the express moved shortly. we have a big construction project tonight that's going to close northbound i-25 from lincoln to c-470, starting at tomorrow. they are putting in overhead signage, and that will happen again on thursday night. just a heads up, tonight and tomorrow night we'll have that full closure. if you're about to get in the car, turn on koa news radio 850 am and now on 94.1 fm for your traffic and cbs 4 weather together. today several men including two school employees are expected to face a judge. police arrested ten men after

ring. cbs 4's jamie leary is tracking this story from the adams county courthouse for us. >> reporter: good morning, britt. three of the ten men seen here seen this afternoon. they are two employees and one learning center. that teacher, david hocker, was arrested along with ten other men will that undercover operation. that operation lasted for two days. hocker was employed as a substitute teacher at denver's warren village, where 106 children attend school. the president of the facility said she's shocked and said all employees including hocker with heavily screened before being hired. he was screened an additional second time as well. we're told he was only employed at the school for eight days before his arrest and was never alone with children without

an ad to have sex with an 11 and 14-year-old girl and paid a state trooper $300 to do so. he was immediately arrested. now he faces six different charges in this case, the most of all of the ten men. he'll appear here this afternoon along with another employee who was a warehouse employee for the school district. he had no contact with children employee. the state says they will conduct more sting operations like this in the future. jamie leary, cbs 4 news. law enforcement agencies across colorado will soon start trying a saliva test to detect whether drivers are high behind the wheel. >> reporter: five different devices are used to test a driver's saliva for drugs and the level of impairment. 125 troopers have been rained and are using them when a duid

>> not every trooper got the same device. >> reporter: they will test these over a three-year period before deciding which device could be used routinely. other law enforcement agencies are being asked to join the pilot program this april, but it will continue to be voluntary by the suspect. the devices are only used after a trooper finished their drug evaluation and/or blood test required to test for impairment. >> they are asked, participating in a pilot program to evaluate devices. are you interested in participating? >> reporter: so far they have had only 5% participation by tests. of those, they claim the results cannot be used by prosecutors in court because it's a pilot program and not police issue standard. >> it would be part of the discovery but the decision to

influenced in any way based upon these devices. >> reporter: the pilot program will evaluate a few things. are the devices safe for an officer to use? how accurate are the results? are they easy to use? and what are the end results when brought into court? two people are dead and at least three others hurt after a shooting at a seattle homeless encampment known as the jungle. all the victims lived at that camp. police are searching for two people they say targeted the victims in that shooting. seattle's mayor says the area has been unmanageable and out of control for nearly 20 years and says now city workers will be clearing that area. the 6th street bridge is set for demolition and last night people wanted one final them out. more than 100 people gathered on the bridge and about 8:00 crowd out. the old bridge will make way

today the fbi and oregon officials will hold a press conference to discuss the armed protest at a wildlife refuge and shootout that left one person dead. >> reporter: tuesday night authorities arrested protest leader ammon bundy and several leaders of the group occupying the wildlife refuge. it started with a traffic stop and they refused to surrender. the ranch claimed on facebook that he had his hands up and was shot three times. officials haven't commented much beyond saying it's not clear who fired first. ryan bundy suffered minor injuries and finnecum died at

,, ,, welcome back. the cost of living in denver is at an all-time high. the mile high city along with san francisco, portland and dallas have the highest home values ever, and many families are simply getting priced out. dozens waited through the night on monday to apply for a new affordable housing complex by dia. yesterday morning they were all turned away. we spoke with the frustrated

>> reporter: the units are promoted as the affordable luxury you deserve. people started lining up monday night to be one of the first to submit an application for the low income section 8 housing. >> been here since 6:42 p.m. yesterday. to get up there and wait till we get all the way up there and tell us we're going to get turned around? >> reporter: but no one showed up to accept applications. instead, someone called police about the growing crowd of police here. >> i think it was discrimination because wasn't nobody out here doing nothing until the police came out here. >> reporter: traffic an crowds blocked the street and there was a fender bender as cars tried to navigate around the lines of people. >> there are people out here, got kids out here. >> reporter: what they don't have is affordable housing.

to the day, 28 in denver, 16 in greeley and 17 in burlington, 3 in avon this morning and 15 below in gunnison. on the satellite and radar we have a few clouds out there this morning. nothing to block the sunshine too much, mostly sunny skies expected today. high pressure is really dominating the western side of the country. later this weekend that will start to change. we'll talk about that in a moment. for today, mostly sunny skies for us. throughout the afternoon, a lot of sunshine and maybe a few high clouds passing through. overnight tonight skies are clear, not quite as cold, and we have a beautiful day tomorrow. but the winds will start to pick up more, could be gusty in the foothills tomorrow. breezy in denver and with the winds coming off the foothills, chance for a mountain wave cloud to develop. that would be the only thing that blocks our sunshine. today eastern plains, 56 in burlington and 52 here in denver, 51 in boulder.

30s, and 30s and 20s on the western slope. it's a warmer day across the state. looking at the hour by hour forecast, 48 by noon and 51 by 2:00, 43 by 5:00. it's a nice day, recess for kids going to be lovely out there. we have 60s by friday, then saturday a chance of rain and still warm out there. we have 39 on sunday, chance of rain and snow. it's really monday into tuesday we have potential for a bigger storm system to roll in. joel? we have taillights and brake lights already this morning at 5:46. you can see the slowing that we do have coming into town, also the northbound direction. we'll see the speeds changing as they go from the 60s and 50s, dipping down into the 30s and 40s. so looking at 12 minutes from 120th to i-70, still not too bad.

we have construction going on tonight and tomorrow night, closing the lanes of northbound i-25 from lincoln out to c-470. that will start at 11:00 tonight and till 5:30 a.m. tomorrow. heading boo the high country, it's an excellent drive. u.s. 6 over loveland pass, we'll have closures at the top of the hour so get the hazmat vehicles getting through. thanks a lot. it's been two years since sergeant dave baldwin died. a wrong way driver hit him while he patrolled in his motorcycle on highway 93 in golden. we spoke with his wife about finding her way to heal.

>> reporter: these jefferson county deputies, members of the motor unit, lined up on highway 393 at the same time in the same spot where sergeant dave baldwin was killed on duty two years ago. >> let us all honor sergeant baldwin with radio silence. >> reporter: it was a gesture of love, a show of support for his widow crystal. >> in some ways it feels like a really long time. in other ways it's like it happened yesterday. >> reporter: the couple married in 2006 and shared a love of motorcycles and the mountains. when dave was killed, crystal told us she lost her joy. >> i don't think you ever get that back. but i'm getting more and definitely more than the year before, like the candles here. >> reporter: her therapy has been opening a new shop in golden full of plant-based medicine, beauty and health products.

>> reporter: through her shop, crystal is connecting with people again. she keeps busy organizing classes on aroam therapy, essential oils and bee keeping, and planning a grand opening celebration for saturday. in this shop filled with products that heal, crystal baldwin has found good medicine. kathy walsh, cbs 4 news. >> when she is not reading her favorite harry potter book, you can find misty riding her bike and dancing and singing. we sat down were tea at the denver tearoom last winter. misty is laid back and easy to talk to, and she carries the conversation by asking me questions. she is 12 years old and is a good student who loves the arts. she admits she is shy but today

this 99-year-old woman woke up to a strange exotic animal sleeping with her on her chest. usually found in the rain forest of south america, the miami woman woke up and screamed. the little guy got scared and ran to the attic. they got it out and took it to an animal hospital. turns out it's a neighbor's pet known as a honey bear, in the raccoon family. a lot of people think trampolines are fun and it seems bears agree. you can see them playing there. they hung around for about 30
