have a southeast wind at the surface and for the denver metro area, it's hard to put this term with a southeast wind, but that's a down slope coming off the palmer divide and into the city of denver, so as this low starts its slow track off to the east and northeast, the winds will go from southeast to more east. that's when we'll see the city socked in with the snow. right now this morning, light snow number ease off the boulder turnpike. varying conditions across the city, but the snow is on the way later today. >> all right. just wait. i think is the theme for the day today. >> all the flakes flying around chris. let's go to lauren to find out what's on tap later. good morning. >> good morning. more snow is on the way. right now, it's falling pretty heavily in other areas, so taking a look at our satellite and radar, heavy snow in denver on the cloudy side. let's zoom in for us. the snow

we see that towards estes park. we're on the cloudy side. heading towards our north to car. there's heavier snow fall along the iowa state line. down more to our south to canyon city to pueblo to sheraton lake, there's heavier snow falls and towards the western slopes, this is the bulk from grand junction to rico, there's -- chris says it will take a while for the rain to shift which should happen around 10:00, 11:00 this evening if the winter weather advisories in place. 6 to 14 inches for the denver area. most near the palmer did -- divide and foothills. some areas in our southwest could see 18 to 36 inches of snow. let's check in why joel hillan. how

talk about that a little bit. >> yes, obviously our plows are getting ready for the snow like everyone else is. the way we're doing that is laying down our chloride which is going to help with the icing conditions, but i think you're right when you said it, it's going to be icy in some spots on the bridges and overpasses, so people need to drive carefully and not be tricked that the roads are okay. and go as fast as they would like. >> you normally say bow to the plow. you can follow the plows online. >> you can. one the things that we launched this weekend in time for mother nature was a tool that will allow those on our website to follow where the plows are. the questions are, where are our plows and they can know how fast their traveling

>> amy ford from cdot joining us. allen -- don't be overconfident. that's going to get in your way. >> okay. thanks, joel. thanks, amy. break ing news out of arizona. roads closed in one area as police are looking into a stolen truck and a crash. >> this is happening in aurora south folk street west of the buckley road and our shaun chitnis is live. good morning, shaun. >>reporter: police are working to open up this intersection. a tow truck that's going to remove the patrol car that had hit a stolen car. that car stolen in the area of i-225 around 3:30 and for an hour, this area has been blocked off. that patrol had to hit that stolen car, a white truck in order to get it to stop and make a pit maneuver. this tow truck is moving the

someone else has claimed that stolen vehicle. that stolen truck, and moved it way. police remain on scene here and much of the intersection is blocked off. only one lane of traffic is open at this hour. so we're going to check back with police and see if we can get a few more details on exactly what happened. but what we understand is the basic situation of a stolen car in a different part of town and police able to make a pit maneuver to stop it. we know that one woman is in custody. we don't have details about that suspect. just that someone is in custody. we'll check in with aurora police and try to get you another update in 30 minutes. shawn chitnis, eyewitness news. it's about boots on the ground. >> there's been plenty of talking leading up to today. >> it's about organization as candidates try to whip up votes

welcome back to cbs 4 morning news on this among. i'm meteorologist chris spears at we have found snow. take a look at highway 36. conditions really just wet. traffic is moving along, but there is some ice and snow in ice packed condition in the lanes. we have snow falling up here. this is right as you boulder overlook. a lot of you probably not waking up to snow, and you're wondering, okay, mr. weather man, where is this don't worry. way. lauren, the winds are key to the snow having not developed over the city yet.

southeast, but they'll be turning and bringing snow sooner than later. >> that is right, chris. chris, stay warm out there. it's chilly even though the snow hasn't started too heavily. we need the winds out of the northeast. we're going to see thrift shift to the east and they'll switch to the northeast. with that will come heavy snow fall. we have nice fall in the southern part of the snow and heavy snow fall in the western slow and a descent ban rolled through the northern part of the state shifting off. as we head into the denver area, we're on the clear side in terms of snow. it's cloudy and cold as we head towards the north. we're seeing this move out near grover and north into kansas. down to the south through canyon city through pueblo and sharitan. we need the rain so shift more into the denver area and ramped it up for us.

junction, delta through rico, there's heavy snow fall to our west. as we look at our winter storm warnings, they'll continue and they'll be in place until noon. the denver area from fort collins, denver through castle rock, we're looking at 6 to 14 inches of snow. most will be south as you head towards the palmer divide. eastern plain, 4 to 18 inches of snow. northern mountains are going to get hammered. san crystals are 10 to -- as we head towards veil and winter park, and iowa springs, picking up 10 to 20 inches. northwest corner gets less, but it has been cold and snowy, they'll take less. we're starting off with 27 in denver. 30 in berlinton. this does fill in more as we start to see the wind shift for us.

fall cranks us this afternoon your evening commute may be tougher than the morning commute. you can see continue. it breaks up in the mountains, but we could see heavy snow fall in denver area and we'll see that fade through the afternoon and evening with heavier snow fall. possible tomorrow night in our high country. temperatures for today. a lot of 20s and low 30s. temperatures aren't going to change too much with this system. you're going to feel tomorrow, 25. late clearing and we're cold and clear on wednesday. joel, how is the morning drive? >> train restrictions have expired in the high country. you can see there's ice and snow there's the ramps and bridges. the traction, passenger traction restrictions remain in place as you get towards the eisenhower pass. loveland pass is closed. we've seen dangerous drive conditions along 285. we're across the denver metro area

where they cancel thing. later today, we could have issues. let's find out from chris spears in our weather lab. >> we're in boulder chris, how are the conditions? >>reporter: the plow went by. i was hoping we could show you that. they're going up us 36. there's the snow fly ing off their blades. there's snow on the ground. it's flying. we're on that may esa as you go up the boulder turnpike and you have the great overlook before you go into the city. it's snowing lightly up here, but it has been snowing most of the night. speeds reduced so you're going to find varying dangerses as you -- varying conditions as you go. you may be wondering, most of you waking up to snow and wondering why we weren't waking up to snow. this is a great example of the micro -- right here where i'm standing, we have a north to northwest wind and that is a good direction to get up slope

we have snow, but for most of the city, brett and alan, the winds out of the southeast that goes down into denver and believe it or not, that's a down sloping wind, but the winds are going to back and come out of the east and northeast. lauren will be along here in a minute to time that out and give you more details on the snow we have coming our way. >> chris, thank you very much. and one thing to note about this storm, it's not a swift one moving in fast and hitting us. it's coming over a gradual period of time. >> when this comes in and it's an up slope lauren, we could have a lot of trouble. that's one of the storms that circles back in, right. >> exactly. when the winds shift like chris talked about, which may not happen until mid-morning and shift this afternoon, that's when we may start to see things ramp up. snow will probably pick up 10:00, 11:00 this morning, and this afternoon it gets heavy for us. that's when the strong winds are going to develop and shift. heavy snow fall on the denver on the

we're on the cloudy side. we did get a little last night. snow fall in the boulder area towards estes park. down south through canyon city to the eastern plains. we have heavier snow fall. a couple of pockets. the western slope from rifle through grand junction down to tally ride and rico, there's a heavy ban. the southern mountains looking to get nailed by the storm system. some areas could see 13 to 18 inches of snow. towards theeastern plains, we're looking at 13 to 18 inches of snow. you have to get the winds to shift to bring the snow. there's fresh powder. 10 to 20 inches. big snow fall. it's not going to happen at once. this is through tomorrow as well and overnight tonight. let's check in why joel. how is the morning drive shaking out this morning? >> in town, we have the sheen on the road. we saw where chris was on boulder turnpike.

breaking news out of aurora. the driver of a stolen truck crashes and causes road closures at north folk street and west avenue. which is west of the buckley road. shawn chitnis is tracking this story. shawn r the roads back open now? >>reporter: well, britt, good morning, and yes, they are. north folk and mexico wide open. traffic moving in both directions. police are able to clear this scene about 20 minutes ago as that stolen vehicle was being towed away from the scene. looks like it was a white truck that was stolen around 3:30 on i-225 and there was a pit maneuver performed. we saw one patrol car. it looks like it hit that vehicle in order to make it stop. we under that one woman is in custody, so there's a dozen police cars here taking over this intersection as they were working to clear the scene we

people living in parts of california are waiting to get their power back after storms with heavy winds ripped down big trees. >> sad out there. one death reported in southern california. dawn champion has the latest. >>reporter: the end of the weekend was a washout in southern california. at some places, rain fell at an inch an hour. heavy downpours caused flooding, but raised concerns in towns like glendora outside of los angeles. recent wild fires left hillsides bare which could have triggered debris and mud slides. this man's car rolled down an embankment. >> it hit the bushes and rolled down four times. but i was

it's sticking to the road and chris will join us in a moment and talk about what's happening where he's at. denver on the slow side. we're looking at this to last through tomorrow morning. what do we have? -- what do we have? heavy snow fall. start zoom into den ver. we're looking at some cloudy skies. you'll notice it's icy on the roads and snow in boulder counter towards estes park. from colorado springs, this has moved from the pueblo area towards sheridan and wells getting snow fall. and -- right battle area, some snow fall as well. we have a ton of winter storm warnings. more of the state is covered in winter storm

fort collins to the eastern plains, 6 to 14 inches of snow possible with this storm system. this goes through tomorrow. this isn't a one time a day affair. our high country is going to get hard. southern mountains will get nailed especially san juan. you may be wondering, i thought i was waking up to a couple of inches of snow. that's what we thought too. the winds haven't shifted enough for us. we're looking at that. when the winds shift to the east, your snow is going to increase through the morning hours and in the afternoon when the winds fully shift to the northeast, that's when the snow is going to start to ramp up. heavy snow fall possible through the entire afternoon into the evening hours and some of this will stick around overnight if the tomorrow morning, the potential for that snow fall to stick around. it breaks up into the western slopes and high country. we'll see this fizzle out in denver. by 7:00, maybe on the clearer side with snow possible still in the high country. temperatures right now, 26 in denver. 27 in
