good morning, we begin with another day of flight cancellations at dia yesterday. a third of the flights did not even make it into the air. >> today, it could be more of the same. 120 flights so far. our cbs 4 chris spears is at the airports. chris, good morning, how is it looking? >> it's snowy. denver airport lorted after the normal 30-year snow average for denver is 5.7 inches. we've seen a one day. here's the crews around the property clear. so that you can come out and make your flight, but i want to let you know, the roads getting here to the airport are very icy and snow packed.

slippery conditions coming in from i-70. you can see the cars in the parking lot covered with snow. these winds gusting out of the north. dave aguilar at times, 20 miles-an-hour. the direction is more northerly verses northeast. that's a good sign the low pressure is making its jont away. >> the backside of the low is going to keep snow coming. as it moves away, things are going to improve around here today. we spent all weekend long telling you it's going to take all day monday and tuesday to -- still winter storm warning for most of colorado including the mountains and eastern plains and denver. chris told you, 6.9 official, that will probably go up. fort collins and littleton, boulder, 11 inches. lewisville,

canyon, 15.5 inches of snow. that's coming from our weather watcher john with that big shovel busting amount. doppler 4000 showing a blob of snow over the denver area. from boulder to denver, snowing pretty good. another batch and this is the main batch that came through last night. that's moving over into burlington. if i put that into motion, you can see how all of that snow is on the backside pushed back against denver. now it's starting to move out. northern wail county is seeing the break ups. as we go through the morning, we'll see the snow dissipate more and go to flurries by 10:00, 11:00. that should move out. we'll see flakes of snow this afternoon. but for the most part, the main energy will be pulling away. we should go into recovery mode tomorrow the way things look. joel hillan out there this morning and throughout the day, temperatures are going to be 25 degrees, so this snow is not going anywhere.

the snow that's coming down that's making for a tough commute, it's the snow on the ground. it's piled up. we have icy and snow packed condition s s. if you're heading to the airport, you heard from chris there, you want to allow yourself plenty of time and call ahead to make sure your time is going before you venture on the roads. the side streets dangerous this morning. they did not necessarily get plowed as cities are focusing on the main thorough fairs in their cities and you have cdot with their plows out focusing on the highways. look at our cbs 4 tech camera. we have a couple of closures along the roadway. let me tilt up the map. it's from lock bowie on the state line of i-76 and airport along i-70 and that's through the kansas city line. >> thanks, joel. it's 5:04. we're keeping a close eye on the road. >> it's the morning with you you have to dig out and plow the

get out and on the road. you want to give yourself extra time. that snow sticking around and our shaun chitnis is on the road and checking on arapahoe road. you can see how fierce the snow is. >>reporter: it's coming side ways. the snow is continuing to fall and the wind blowing it in that direction. behind me, i-25 in both directions, covered with snow and the plows keep coming and really two or three at a time. not able to keep up with the amount of snow fall that we have. we've been watching these conditions for several hours overnight and into the morning. let's start by showing you the conditions we saw in aurora overnight. that's where we see, again, wind blowing the snow sidewalks. and all of the major streets as well as side streets covered with snow. plows were out, but not able to keep up with the snow that we got yesterday and the snow that kept coming in.

january 22nd and his car was hit by another vehicle when rolled. stephanie turned on the street just moments before the accident. >> he has a newborn son that was born in november. he was 23. he was going to school. to make a better life. >> the other driver stayed on the scene. staff from the urgent clinic across the street tried to help, but grub who wasn't wearing a seatbelt died on the scene. traffic moves quickly on the street. there's signals on both blocks that sandwich the intersection, but godtree says there needs to be another signal here. she's said she's been in three accidents here by herself. >> kids were driving too fast. took a turn too fast. flipped their vehicle. knocked out the transformer and all the power in our complex. >> friends of seth set up go fund me sites to help his family.

scroll at the bottom of our screen all morning long and check online at cbsdenver.com. thank you, mark. welcome to our team coverage this morning of this february snow storm. our shawn chitnis is going to watch our roads. morning. if have you to head slow. firstly, let's go over to david aguilar who is tracking the forecast. is there a way to measure how much snow we have gotten? >> out of dia, we've had 6.9 inches. anywhere from 6 to 15 inches of snow. it took a while to get here, but we finally arrive. all weekend, we told you it's going to take all day among and tuesday morning to arrive at that foot of snow. out there right now, we have a

chunk of colorado including denver and the eastern plains as well where it's snowing. watcher in littleton. look at there's the reading in dia. 6.9, but close to a foot in boulder. 15 and a half in clear creek canyon as you get into the foothills. it's a different story up there. snow still coming down, but it's start to go break up north of boulder and fort collins. we had a big -- many areas got an additional 6 inches of snow. here's how it plays out by the hour-by-hour. the intensity will slowdown. through the noon hour, we could have flurries here and there. we're not completely done with the snow. we may have another inch in the metro area, maybe one to two in the foothill locations as the system pulls away, and later this afternoon into tonight, it starts to break up. so i don't think we'll have much in the way of snow falling for the

morning, it's a different story. and for many of us, joel hillan, this could be the worst commutes we've had in some time, right. >> if you have to be on the roads this morning, it's a tough commute. if you don't have to be on the roads, stay home and enjoy our coverage of this storm because it's going to be dangerous out there. look at i-70 and havana. we have a crash along i-70. you have the cars that have to stop and the accordion effect as the cars have to get going. how do you allow plenty of space between you and the car in front of you when it looks like this. you can see the low visibility that settled across the denver, metro area. get to the tech center, there's light volume. you have to keep adequate space between you and the cars in front of you because you can't see the lines on the road. here's the denver metro area. here's the

you have a stall and you have people that's going to slide off the roadway across the denver metro area. they plowed so your neighborhood streets, your coldest acts, various areas aren't going to see the potential from the snow plows. getting out of your driveway and getting to where you need to go to the plow roads is going to be tough. there's quite a bit of snow especially the further west you go. look at folks making their way up that hill to get passed bulls there, out to 285 along c-470 and as you get passed alameda to i-70. it's a tough drive. it's tougher because two of the roads are closed. i-270 closed near nebraska and you have i-70 which is closed from air park out to the kansas state line this morning up into the high country. we have chain and

few hours ago. a closer look at i-25. a challenging commute for folk who's might be in this area and snow falling throughout the morning as well as from last night and the wind blowing. pretty consistent conditions making for quite the challenge here in centennial and by i-25. we checked out the situation in aurora earlier this morning or late last night and that's where we saw a similar picture with a lot of snow on the ground and a lot of snow on the arterials and side streets. prepare to see more snow as you're turning onto a marj or street or getting onto the freeway because that's where we see snow piling up and cars are tripped up because they're not preparing for the extra snow. that's something to keep in mind as well. we're going to monitor the conditions here back out here live at i-25 as we see

he has to shovel today. here's the big low. it's turning in kansas. we have blizzard conditions in omaha to sections of -- it's snowing in the denver metro area. we're on the backside of that low. all the winds out of the north shooting against the palmer divide and back into the denver metro area. if you go into fort collins and greeley, it's start to go break up. those areas have been cancelled as far as the winter storm warning goes from denver eastward. we're going to be in the snow. this is the forecast through noon. we see snow across the eastern plains. i think we'll see another 1 to 2 inches of snow in denver and this afternoon, it tapers off to a few flurries and by tomorrow, we start to see things clear out. highs are not going to be all that high. 20s and teens across the state including denver.

25. a light snow and another inch of snow in the city. another one to two if you live close to -- keep that in mind. 29 should be the high tomorrow after a morning low of 6:00. in the morning, it's going to be cold with clearing skies and thursday, friday, and saturday, in the 30s, we've got one little cold shot coming in on friday that might deliver a few flurries and we get into a superbowl weekend coming up. joel hillan, you have a lot to talk about. >> clearly this car is not facing the proper direction on the road. we're going to have numerous calls of slideoffs that happen. florida state patrol reminding folks to stay in your car. do not get off your car. call them and they'll help you help. you can't assume they're going to be in control

place is inside. police there on the scene at i-25 and 50th of that slide off. we have another accident as you travel on i-70 and it's right near havana. it's causing major slowing. this is the average speeds you're going to see over the next quarter hour or so. this is going to dip into the single digits. a 13-minute drive to i-70. you get a few more cars on the roadway and that will double that drive time. you can see the lower visibility we have. be cautious of bridges and off ramps and the transitions between those. the conditions are going to vary. one thing is universal. there's a thin layer of ice. take a look across denver metro area. you can see this dark gray. that's the spots where you have the most snow accumulation out on the roadways and causing a tough drive.
