good morning, i'm britt moreno. >> i'm alan gionet. we're glad to have you. here's what's happening on the cbs 4 morning news. a neighborhood is going to be cleaning up. the latest on an afternoon water main break. thousands go to mesa county to say goodbye to a deputy killed in the line of duty. how friends and family paid tribute to derrick gear. plus winds like a freight train rolled through colorado. lauren tells us what we can expect today. let's get started with a traffic alert. we have i-70 closed. this is why. closed in both directions between jipson. >> c dot sent these pictures of rocks in the middle of the highway. one lane was closed. joel hillan has a closer look at these closures. good morning, joel.

both lanes and both directions are shut down of i-70 to glenwood springs. highway 40 and highway 50 are what cdot are asking folks to use while they get that cleared out. they have to destroy the boulder on the roadway, but they have to repair the roadway as well. if you remember this happened a couple of years ago and the delays were huge because of that, so hopefully they can get that done and clean that up before the weekend. we're across the denver metro area. a couple of side street trouble spots out. lane closures along i-25 along c 470 tomorrow night. that's going to be closed -- i-25 in the southbound direction at c 470, a fuel -- a full closure. train restriction in place because we have flakes in the high country. >> we have snow in the high

around through the high country. it should get lighter through the afternoon. it's wind in some places. winds around 50 miles-an-hour right now. waldon, the gust at 22 miles-an-hour. we're expecting to see gusty winds. it's not quite as bad as yesterday. 30 in lineman. 28 out at -- downtown, 38. 29 in castle rock. 28 in parker and 29 in thornton. looking at our satellite and radar, snow on the eastern plains so it continues in parts of the high country in denver. looking at cloud cover to go with our clear skies. 60 degrees around noon. we hit 63. it should be a beautiful day. a little on the windy side. we'll talk about the rest of the weekend in a minute. for now,

crews are going to meet with homeowners to assess the damage caused by a water main break. you can see what a mess it is. cbs 4 jaime leery has a closer look. >>reporter: good morning, alan. you can see where crews were working to patch up that water main break. it was an 8 inch iron cast -- it poured on the north side. the calls came into dispatch around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. this video from the daily camera shows what the residents were up against trying to figure out ways to divert that fast flowing water. the city says the water was shut off around 5:15, but one resident said it took over an hour. 13 homes were damaged as a result. a woman came to help her sister and said the water kept coming in.

main break like it was a river. all the neighbors were trying to be very helpful. we had everyone out with shovels trying to divert the water. but in her lower level which has two bedrooms, an office, and a family room, and a utility room, the water was pouring in through the window well which had filled up with water and so. >> crews were expected to take 10 hours to fix that. obviously this morning, it looks like they've done this. a mess in this street. they're expected to be back on seen to talk to homeowners and specifically talk about claims now that they're left to pick up the pieces. jaime leary, cbs 4 morning news. jaime, thank you. police need your help identifying shop lifting suspects. you can see in this security footage right here, the camera caught these guys in action. they allegedly stole tens of thousands of dollars in

the pair hit two day. one in boulder and the other in denver. cbs 4 schaun chitnis is live from the cherry creek location. shawn, what can you tell us? >>reporter: the owners of max clothing hope by sharing this video, they can help stop the store. you can see from the surveillance cameras from inside the store that a man and woman are acting to the. they act as inside the store. cameras catch them in act, but don't stop them from stealing the most expensive items in site. you can see the man stuffing something under his jacket in this video and the owners estimate these two got away with $20,000 worth of these two are considered sophisticated hop

they're sophisticated shop lifters. they're going to beef up their security to prevent something like this in the future. shawn chitnis. . police came across the country to pay trip bute to a fallen deputy. a teenager with a gunshot gear while gear was approached that teen. yesterday, mountain news reporter matt kroger was there. >>reporter: a two lane strip, a blacktop. >> we're bonded together today into supporting our community, our police men. >> strangers all with the same hole in their hearts. >> we know people opened up homes to officers with places to today. >> it isn't just the sheriff's office grieving. it's the entire community. >> mesa county gear died serving this place. a navy veteran, a father and husband. he

to be tried as an adult. two dogs killed after a home went up in flames. investigators think the animals started the fire. firefighters put out the flames in 12 minutes, but they could not rescue two dogs in time. another two dogs did make it out okay. investigators say the fire started when one of the animals accidentally turned on a stove burner. pizza box caught on fire and the flames spread quickly. police say they have a good idea who vandalized the officer's memorial. they have video of the suspect who did that vandalism. this is what it looked like yesterday morning before the memorial was cleaned. police say vandals poured paint on it. and tore down the american flag there. police chief robert white said it came a year to the day of the last defacing of that memorial. >> i really felt sick. that memorial really represents men and women that have given their

to deface it is a dishonor to those individuals as well as to the men and women in this department and the community as a whole that supports what we do each and everyday. >> two men pleaded guilty to the defacing of the memorial a year ago. he was ordered to -- matthew goldberg pleaded guilty in early january and is awaiting sentencing. well, looking to houston texas where there's an apartment complex on fire. firefighters here in the streets. you can see the hoses out. they're trying to attack the fire from all directions and all we can see is just a ton of smoke billowing out of this apartment complex. this is happening in northwest harris county there. and apparently this fire started overnight. so firefighters have been working it for a little while here. >> they're worried about it spreading further and look at that fire equipment in the streets there. and now they have it knocked down to the point where you don't see as

that is a big apartment fire in houston this morning. we're looking for injuries. we'll get back to that story as we can update it this morning. an update on the planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs. it's back open for the first time since a deadly shooting spree. a gunman killed three people and injured nine others during an attack the day after thanksgiving. not all the clinic is open right now. some areas are still undergoing construction. but the staff is ready to see patients again. >> the support that we felt from the community, the love, the notes, the outpouring the concern and frankly encouragement to get this place open again has been uplifting. >> planned parenthood added its security measures and hopes to fully reopen the clinic in a few months. kids have to get back to school today. the break is over, lauren. >> it is over, unfortunately for

active rock fall activity up along i-70 near the hain lake tunnel. this is glenwood canyon. you can see not only have these boulders fallen onto -- look at the size of those. they've not only fallen on the interstate to cause damage along the interstate as well. we had one lane closed each direction. they've done a full closure overnight. that closure is going to be extended. use highway 40. use highway 50, but we have i-70 which is closed both directions awe you make your way from gypsum to glenwood springs. let me take you east closer to town along i-70. we've had lower visibility to west of c 470 and we have passenger chain and passenger restrictions in place as you get over the eisenhower tunnel and over vail pass and 6 over loveland pass. that does remain open, but with the chain and

good morning, everyone. we want to take you back to this big apartment fire right now happening in houston texas in harris county. firefighters are clearly trying to get the upper hand on this fire, but the smoke continues to billow out of the roof here. reports from people on scene from our cbs affiliate in houston claim that crews have this fire at least contained to one of the buildings here. and reportedly neighbors had to help each other get out. the good thing is no one is hurt this morning. >> we have seen flames pour out

this started at 4:00 a.m. and thankfully everybody able to get out. so that live picture there showing you how bad that fire is. how severe the damage there -- that is northwest of houston in the area of harris county, i think that's called there. let's see what else is going on this morning. >> let's bring it back home to colorado. while we enjoyed a warm and windy day in denver, it looked like a wintery post card in the mountain. this is snow falling in winter park. meteorologist justin mcheffey found high winds in clear creek county. >>reporter: high winds continuing east. we're expecting the biggest wind gust between 6 and 9,000 feet. technically the fastest jet streams are over wyoming, but some are mixing down to mountain top level and produced wind gust

assess the damage and help owners with the next step which 13 homes in total on this north boulder neighborhood damaged from flooding, that began around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the water was shut off around 5:30 yesterday evening. one woman says it took over an hour to shut off the water. many couldn't stop the water from spilling through their homes. one woman who came to help her sister in this neighborhood said it looked like a river rushing down the street and dispute her efforts, her sister's home had several inches of water which belongings. >> we were literately digging channels to try to deflect the water away from the corner of out. >> the city worked for 10 hours it. it was an 8 inch cast iron main that broke.

here to help the owners with the claim process. jaime leary, cbs 4 morning news. police need your help identifying shoplifting suspects. they're in action here. they reportedly stole tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise. the pair hit two max clothing stores in the same day. one in boulder. the other in denver. c bshgs sshgs bs 4 shawn chitnis live this morning in the cherry creek location. shawn. >>reporter: well, alan, the owners of these store s are hoping by sharing this video, they'll be able to catch these two and stop them from shoplifting at any other stores. take a look at the video that shows that man and woman works together. the couple act as if they're looking at items. cameras can catch them in the act, but don't stop them from items. you can see the man stuffing clothes under his jacket in this video.

owners estimate these two got away with $20,000 worth of clothes. the owner says it's clear they have done this before. >> it's shocking. these two were sophisticated. we've had theft over the years, but not quite this significant. >> and the owners tell us because this was so much more than the other shoplifting incidents they've dealt with, they're going to step up their security to try to prevent this in the future. shawn chitnis. >> thank you, shawn. police think they know who attacked the officer's memorial. this is what it looked like yesterday. before it was cleaned, vandals poured paint on that memorial and tore down the american flag. >> it looks the same one year later. >> we believe this occurred as a result of the first anniversary.

the fallen memorial -- two men pled guilty for covering it in red paint. >> that memorial represents those who have given their service to the community. >> denver police have taken measures to protect the memorial. permanent cameras have been placed in the plaza around ddp headquarters. >> it's a result of the incident that occurred yesterday, we posted no trespassing signs when the plaza is closed. >> ddp says it has the criminal act being done. >> we'll identify the individual or individuals that are responsible for this. the individual will be charged with trespassing, and charged with defacing property, and criminal miss chief. >> chief white says he knows this is coming from a vocal minority. >> this is a community that, by in large, support what the men and women of this police department does everyday. and

few who are ill intended. >> in denver, jeff todd, cbs 4 news. a bank robbery suspect on the fbi's most wanted list will face a judge this morning e. was apart of the group who wore a green mask during robberies. 25-year-old milo mason is facing a list of charges in the robberies. the fbi says he was involved in at least 6 bank robberies in thornton and lakewood and other parts of the metro area. and this was surveillance video from one of the banks hit back in september of last year. mason is also facing charges of attempted murder in the shooting of two people after a first bank robbery on november 18th. he was arrested at a motel 6 in thornton on january 15th. makeup is a billion dollar business and high end brand was so expensive. cbs 4 suzanne

thousands of people are waking up this morning out of their homes because of severe weather. >> across the south, more than a dozen twisters swept through leaving destruction behind. here's dawn champion with a look at the bad weather. >>reporter: not even this fire station in alabama could escape the wrath of a storm. an apparent tornado plowed through johnsonville tossing debris everywhere. in florida, dash cam video of a sheriff's car showing a twister on the ground. >> it coming. >> across the south monday, 16 tornados were reported. in alabama, bow brantley rolled out the storm in the hall of his home.

>> in mississippi, the storm damaged the roof of this school, terrifying students. >> we could hear the water coming through the roof into the hallway. >> the same massive storm system covered roads and streets from the carolinas to new york in snow and ice making it tricky. >> cars off the road everywhere. there's a car wrapped around a telephone pole. >> in baltimore, ambulance flipped responding to a car. everyone inside survived. there's concerns over possible dawn champion, cbs news new york. the weather put a stop to air travel across the nation. flight aware reported more than 1,000 flights delayed or cancelled yesterday and we could see more delays today in the south. all right. how about your weather right here in colorado. here's lauren. >> it's windy out there. a lot of bit windy in some areas. 47 mile an hour gust. 60 mile an hour winds towards bertha pass and better towards golden and black hawk.

better than yesterday. it's really these high elevation areas that's going to see the strongest winds today. we'll be breezy here in denver, but again, not quite as bad as the high country of the foothills and we'll see winds at 20 miles-an-hour. enough to mess up your hair and blow around dirt. 28 in denver. 33 in burlington. 34 in craig. and 30 over in grand junction. on our satellite and radar, we have snow lingers in the high country and a little on the eastern plains that are a skirt through coming through a system to our north. most of us on the dry side to start the day. looking at the future cast, the mountain snow -- we expect to see sunshine and there's a little cloud cover in denver through the rest of the afternoon and evening and dry across the state. a few clouds build into the northwest and a dry day again tomorrow with temperatures going up more. it's going to be a warmer day tomorrow. a

an undetermined amount of time. you can take highway 40 or highway 50 if you need to get around that. here's i-70 at the vail rest area. we've seen passenger restrictions in place, and chain restrictions in place up to vail pass up to the eisenhower tunnel just because of the tough conditions. overland land pass as well. west of c 470 and we've seen jensen. here's the metro area. blocking a lane off highway. the earl ier trouble at i-24 and there were prepared -- there's a full direction. watch out for that. otherwise, alan, across the drive in the den ver metro area, a lot of green and that will change within the next hour, but enjoy it while we can.
