now in jefferson county, the snow is sticking to the roads. this is near lookout mountain. it's slow going there. meteorologist justin mcheffey tracking it from the mobile weather lab. justin? >> we're at c470 and 285 right now. you can see the snow is just coming in sideways all thanks to the northerly wind shift we had earlier today and a pretty pronounced upscale wind flow. over the next several hours, we'll see snow like this in the city and especially up in the foothills. that's where we expect the most snow fall. as jim mentioned, some of the snow sticking to the roads. that's what we experienced out west of downtown denver. so tomorrow morning is sure to be a slick commute. let's look at satellite and radar across the state of colorado. you can see that moisture flow up in the mountains also producing bands of snow. but specifically, let's zoom into the denver metro area and watch out that snow band is moving from the northeast down

northeasterly wind is pushing all of the moisture up the mountains as it gets forced aloft in the atmosphere. it produces snow like this. winter weather alerts. we have a winter weather advisory for all the major mountain ranges in colorado, including the foothills to the west of denver. ed greene's forecast is coming up in a few minutes. we'll let you know specifically how much we'll wake up to denver tomorrow morning. justin mcheffey, cbs4 news. >> justin, thank you. also developing tonight, a police officer hospitalized. one suspect dead and another behind bars. this crime spree started with a burglary at 37th and grove. and the shootings were all along lowell. karen is live in lowell tonight. karen, that's when one suspect started firing off gunshots. >> reporter: exactly, karen. you can still see several officers on scene tonight. this is where witnesses say the suspect started firing off rounds. they describe the gunfire as reckless. we know two buildings here on

windows. this started as a homeowner caught two men trying to break in. >> i seen a guy right there. >> reporter: lenny was at home when he says two men tried breaking into one of his windows, attempting to get inside. >> your instincts are, like, i'm going to get those guys. >> reporter: he never caught up with the minutemen but instead called denver police. within minutes, officers had spotted the suspects near 34th and irving. there a chase ensued and went closing in on the two men, a female officer was shot in the leg. she's expected to be okay. >> everyone is putting their arms around each other. and obviously we're certainly committed to do what this community expects of us. >> reporter: after that initial exchange of gunfire, the suspect then carjacked a woman and took off. witnesses say he fled down lowell. police close behind and bullets flying. >> the guy was shooting recklessly. i was more afraid of getting shot with a stray bullet.

building right there. i started hearing ricochets so i knew it was coming. >> reporter: that chase ended. one suspect was shot and killed, the other taken into custody. after it was all over and knowing how violent the men were, he says he's thankful they never made it into his home. >> i realize my whole family could have been in danger if if did not respond, one would have been in the house. >> reporter: now lowell remains closed here from 32nd to 37th. we're told the officer will remain okay tonight. her name is not being released nor the other suspects' names. karen morfitt, cbs 4. >> scary afternoon, karen, thank you. a suspect took his own life. started at 9:00 when deputies went to check on a man at himalaya. he allegedly fired at deputies. s.w.a.t teams moved in. they entered that home and

now to a developing story. take a look at this sketch. it might be the key solving a terrifying sex assault in parker. that victim was attacked while she was on the side of the road with a broken down car. tom mustin live on the investigation tonight. tom, the woman thought the man who stopped was trying to help her at first. >> reporter: and, tim, that's one of the things so scary about this case. the woman was driving along this rural road when she needed to pull over. she told sheriff deputies she was relieved when he got out. but instead of being a good samaritan, he sexual assaulted her and drove down the road. residents in this rural area tell me they're scared. >> it's kind of scary. >> reporter: roxanna tervino is on guard after a woman was quiet development in east parker. >> just hope that the officials are able to find him and that rest.

sketch described as a 6-foot-3, white male, between 20 and 30 years old. a woman experienced car trouble thriving along a rural -- driving along a rural road north of hilltop. she was approached by the man she thought had come to help. instead, he attacked her and drove off. roxanna tervino always felt safe here. the assault has changed that. >> i had always hoped that someone would help me or i could help someone else if they had car trouble. i'm disturbed. >> reporter: she believes there's more animals than people in this area. >> it could be somebody that lives, yeah, in the general vicinity which is scary. >> reporter: the suspect is believed to be driving an older model white or gray single cab pickup with flood lights above the cab. with this violent criminal still on the loose, katy says she and her family won't take their safety for granted. >> we're not always good about locking doors.

>> reporter: if you're ever driving at light and need to pull over, do it in a well lit area if possible. if you feel like you're in danger, don't hesitate to call 911. if you have any information, call the douglas county sheriff's office. tom mustin, cbs 4 news. >> thank you, tom. i-70 is back open through glenwood canyon but only at night and the delays are still long and frustrating. >> a contractor sent us this video of big rocks rolling down towards the interstate toward rockslide mitigation work. i-70 is open tonight and will be every night between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. the next day. but just one lane is open during those hours. and it can take two hours to get through. and the highway is still closed during the day. jury deliberations continue tomorrow in the case of a woman who cut an unborn baby from a

stan live in boulder. stand, almost all who watched the case expected a quick verdict. >> instead, this jury has been deliberating nearly six hours. it was expected the verdict would come much sooner. the jury did come back, though, with two questions earlier today. but when the judge asked the jury if they needed just a couple more hours to finish, they appeared nowhere near a verdict. prosecutors say murdering michelle wilkins would have just been a side effect of what she wanted. >> you can't take a baby from somebody, steal their baby, rip it out of their abdomen without trying to kill the person. >> she was obsessed with pregnancy, faking her own pregnancy nearly a year. she even had a baby shower. but her lie boiled over when she said she was still pregnant three months after she should have given birth. her defense calls her guilty of only attempted manslaughter and

>> she never planned, prepared, or processed anything that happened on march 18th. >> reporter: guilt under the lesser manslaughter charge was possible after she heard her testimony. she was there about an hour. lane attacked her moments after she was trying to leave. prosecutors say lane showed no regard for wilkin isn't life. >> what was somebody thinking? what did they intend when they harmed another human being? you have to look at how they went about inflicting the harm. >> reporter: lane faces six felony counts. the gridlockses continue tomorrow. -- the deliberations continue tomorrow. stan bush, cbs 4 news. the latest on the surgical test accused of stealing

to diseases. he worked here at swedish medical center but also in glendale, arizona, and all the way out to san diego. kelly, you learned former patients in california are being tested as well. >> reporter: well, jim, just like the nearly 3,000 former patients here at swedish that have been asked to take hiv as well hepatitis testing, so have more than 500 former patients in california. that means combined with the patients that he may have been in touch with in arizona, rocky allen, may be responsible for putting more than 5,000 people at risk. >> during one of his shifts, he was witnessed by a colleague trying to divert medications. >> reporter: rocky allen had only worked at scrips green hospital in san diego for 20 days. but it was long enough for the former navy officers to allegedly switch needles of the

he was let go and then later hired and fired at hospitals in colorado and arizona for doing the same thing. >> patient safety is our priority. >> reporter: patients are being offered free testing for hiv and hepatitis. >> there's no licensing body for a surgical technician. if this had occurred with someone who has a license from the state of california like a nurse or a physician, we would have reported that. >> reporter: allen did appear in federal court at the end of last week in denver where he pleaded not guilty to tampering with a consumer product as well as obtaining a controlled substance by deceit. he's out on bond. live in englewood, cbs 4 news. new details on the uber driver that carried out a shooter rampage. >> i pled him to stop.

this new news -- kalamazoo. this news comes after he pled guilty. >> reporter: jason dalton showed little reaction as the judge read his 16 charges against him. it happened around 6:00 saturday night. that's when he shot and wounded a woman. a few hours later, he killed a man and his 17-year-old son at a car dealership. 20 minutes later, he killed four women in the parking lot of a cracker barrel. during the spree, he continued to pick up uber customers. >> after the telephone call, he started driving erratically. >> reporter: matthew was in the car right before the shootings. he says dalton lost it after taking a phone call. >> he blew stop signs and almost side swept a car. we were speeding along. then finally once he stopped, i jumped out of the car and ran away. >> reporter: his last fare of the night was a group of three men. >> kept explaining how tired he was. >> reporter: they knew his car

killer's and joked to him about it. >> you're not the guy, are you? and he kind of just said, no. >> reporter: police arrested dalton a few minutes after he dropped off that group of men. police have not yet discussed a motive. new video of an explosive boat explosion in indonesia. 27 boats were from foreign countries. the president of indonesia says they're taking illegal fishing very seriously because it costs that country billions of the dollars every year. crime sprees on camera. the video shows two boys in tennessee. they broke windows, even poured oil on some of the cars. although the boys have been arrested, their motive still unclear. well, winter's back with a vengeance tonight. >> and could be a slow go tomorrow morning. >> temperatures around the freezing mark, 32 degrees.

we continue to get snow overnight and the temperatures drops, it could be a slick commute. this morning, we had sunshine on the eastern plains. a little snow in the foothills. that continued. then it started rain and colder air moved in. it changed to snow and moved right down into the metro area. you see everything shifting to the west. as it does, it's cleared the denver area. but there's more to the north that's filling in. so we see snow off and on as the evening goes on. look at the south of it through texas into dallas, very heavy showers and thunderstorms and showers and thunderstorms into southeastern sections of the u.s. as well. as we take a look, you can see that light snow. just some flurries in the city right now. but, again that, could pick up off and on as the evening goes on. here it is on the futurecast. you can see the snow along the front range just kind of in and out of denver. but here it is at 7:00. you can see generally the metro area is still in snow. but it leaves quickly. and by about 3:00 in the afternoon, we're back to sunshine over the eastern plains with some lingering snow

here's the winter weather alerts. goes through early tuesday. anywhere from 4 to 8, 5 to 9, or 6 to 12. or here for the winter storm warning, 8 to 14. and this area right there, that's pike's peak! as you go further into the northeast, very light snow. then it gets to be about a 1, 2, 3, 4, maybe 5 inches. so 1 to 5, i think, in the metro area. 1 to 3 inches of snow. but if you have 25 temperatures, that could make it slick. 21, 52 our highs today. both lows at 28. 48 and 20 are normal. north 9 for the winds. 78% humidity. rising barometer. nice shot from mark floyd here. sunrise from erie. larry pierce showed us it started snowing in steamboat springs. and mike says there's snow in the rain gauge. temperatures tonight, mostly in the 20s and 30s over the eastern plains. teens and 20s for the high

20s and 30s out west. for tomorrow, a chilly day. only 30s and 40s for the eastern plains. 20s and 30s for the mountains. mostly 40s to the west. here's your denver forecast. for tonight, we'll see the light snow. maybe 1 to 3 inches. 25 by morning. then for tomorrow, snow clearing -- snow early and then clearing skies. sunshine by afternoon. 38 and 37, the chilly daytime highs. for the next several days, 49 on wednesday. look at the warmup here. 51 on thursday. 50s on friday. 65 to start the weekend. another little system comes in. but it's a much weaker system. so i'm going for 51 for rain or snow showers and right back in the 60s by next week. >> quick recovery, ed. >> i think so! [ laughter ] >> thank you. the city of silverton in san juan county decided to ask the governor to seek a superfund investigation to clean up dozens of old mines in colorado, including the now infamous gold king mine. the epa accidentally triggered

last year. the tainted rivers -- it tainted rivers in three states. rick sallinger went back to examine one of the areas suffering the most. >> reporter: this mountain known as ship rock is sacred to the navajo people who live here. so, too, is the water that [ rushing water ] >> reporter: last august, that water which brings life, brought trouble. millions of gallons of contamination flowed from the river of colorado into the san juan and new mexico, threatening their economy and their spiritual way of life. >> these corns should normally be about 6 feet high. they just got to 4 feet. >> reporter: he's a farmer and representative to the navajo nation board. with sadness, they shut off the water when they heard the toxic plume was coming. they still haven't turned it back on.

farmers in the region have felt the impact. [ engine revving [ . >> reporter: he can only bundle up what remains of what could have been a bountiful harvest. he estimates the loss about $10,000. >> it hurt me hard. it hit my wife hard, too, my family. it hit us hard. tears. >> reporter: the federal epa attempted to provide the naff s with an emergency -- navajos with an emergency water supply. but the barrels of water will be rejected because they were believed to have previously been used for oil. >> they met all our standards for irrigation. >> reporter: the san juan remains murky. metal consent concentrations have returned to previous levels, according to federal government. but the navajos insist that's not acceptable. >> reporter: the epa has told them them it's safe to use the

but they don't trust them. and so their irrigation system remains shut down. >> reporter: it is as dry as the dust that fills this to the fields. they may let the water flow come spring but then shut it down if storms disturb the sediment below. >> we'll be looking at the water quality before and after the spring runoff. >> reporter: joe ben, jr., fears a lasting impact from what the colorado waters have brought. in ship rock, new mexico, rick sallinger, cbs 4 news. >> huh.

five days until the avs host the red wings in an outdoor game at coors field! but on friday, the alumni will ace up and live some of the glory games. one of the best rivalry in the nhl. they competed for five stanley cup titles in a 7-year span. and those matchups led to bloody brawls. this is a must-see event for current avs prayers. >> i don't think we'll see any of the brawls.
