for a challenge in the area especially the side streets with the neighborhood where i'm at off spouse and -- we were able to look down by the tech center. not as bad, but snow on the those are the conditions you're going to deal with. there were some snow that covered up the snow. expect time to -- live in news. a denver police officer in fair condition and a man dead after officer-involved shooting. first we want to get to the weather to find out about the storm. >>reporter: lauren whitney is tracking the storm. it's snowing at -- do we have lauren? >> in our foothills, we're going to see descent snow falls continue and we have dryer air from the north.

on the eastern plains and clear nothing the cloud cover. as we zoom in here to the denver area, we may get a snow shower or two that rolls through, but for the most part, it's going to be on the cloudy sky. from boulder into golden and golden has gotten lighter and confer and into castle rock. we have descent fall into the -- our foothills are going to get the most through the morning. here in denver, a little on the dry side. to the north, estes park, allen's park, they have snow fall. allen's park has gotten 8 inches and -- we have heavy snow falls in canyon center. south is an area to watch out. winds gusty. 50 mile-per-hour in

close to 30 miles-an-hour and windy in the city. black hawk at 20 miles-an-hour. leadville. gradual clearing. by noon, partly sunny skies and it will be clearer by 5:00 and get chilly. joel, i heard you talking with the roads. how is it going out there? >> it's slick out there along you heard from shawn, the further west you go, it's going to be tough. along broadway. and you can see the sheen on the road. most is wet road once you get into town, but as we were saying from soto creek, the tougher it gets. a semi off to the side. you look across the denver metro area, the road weather index gives away what lauren has been talking about and tracking for us out west into the foothills. in town, we have a couple of accidents here there.

portion of the drive right now, out to 285. >> look at the snow line on the edges of the roads. it's going to be quite a morning. thank you, joel. we're covering this story of the shoot ing involving a denver dead. the officer injured has begun with a crime spring at here's our karen morfitt. >> i seen a guy right there. >> he saw two men when -- they tried to break into his window. >> your instinct is i'm going to get those guys. >> he called denver police and within minutes officers spotted the men near 34th and -- when closing in on the two men, a female officer was shot in the leg. robert white says she's expected to be okay.

towards the foothills, that's our heavier spot. along you head along i-70, you're going to head into snow. allen's park to ohio springs, it's snowing. south of colorado springs, canyon city through colorado city and trinidad, we have nice snow falls. watch out, those roads are going to be on the snowy side. our future cast, we talked about this yesterday. this is a quick movie system and by 8:00, 9:00, most has started to wrap up in the northern part of the state. as we head into the lunch hour, clear in denver. we may have sunshine. scattered showers into our southern mountains through the afternoon and into the evening. here in denver, front range, foothills, we have cleared out. it's one of those days like it never happened because a lot of areas will see melting especially in denver.

today and tomorrow, and mostly sunny sky and a few clouds here or there tomorrow. overall, back into the upper 40s and 50s tomorrow. winter weather advisories tomorrow. some hasn't updated since midnight last night, so these are the totals from yesterday. most areas looking at 1 to maybe 4 inches of snow in our foothills and high country. looking at our wind speeds. winds are going to stick around today. winter park -- it's gusty from pueblo to trinidad. the foothills, and black hawk, it gets breezy. 30 in denver, 32 in boulder and 20s, low 30s on the western plains. 28 in avon. 14 in leadville and 32 in grand junction. our highs, 40 in denver. 42 in boulder. 45 in greeley. and 40s and 50

low 20s and 30s for the mountains. by lunch time, more sunshine out there. gradual clearing through the afternoon and it's windy, fairly mild and degrees. close to 60 on friday and close to 70 on saturday. let's check in with joel, good morning. >> good morning, i know it's a dark shot from mobile 4th, but along 6th avenue, you can see the windshield wipers fighting splash back. once you get onto resolution. that's what we're seeing into the high country. it looks like a dicy drive. we have chain and passenger traction restrictions in place. let's show that in a second. in town, this is cbs 4 mouse trap cam, mostly wet roads so splash back is the only thing you're going to be fighting. across the denver metro area, no big accidents to get in your way. we have the usual closer, i-70 and havana.

that things are going to be icy, that's what the icons mean. i-70 to the eisenhower, johnson passenger -- last summer, the environment disaster at the gold king mine left the river orange here. the city of silver ton in san juan county are seeking a fund for the cleanup. we see one of the areas suffering most. >>reporter: this ship rock is sacred to the navaho people who live here and so is the water. last august, that water which brings life but trouble. millions of gallons of contamination from heavy metals flowed from the river in colorado into the san juan in new mexico threatening their economy and their spiritual way of life.

than us, 6 feet high. they got to 4 feet. >> joel jr is a farmer and representative to the navaho national board. he tells how he shut off the irrigation water when they heard the toxic plume coming. they still haven't turned it back on. some 550 navaho farmers have felt the impact. among them is earl and his family. you can only bundle up what remains of what might have been a -- boundaryiful harvest. >> it hurt my family hard. it hit us hard. it made us shed tears. >> the federal leap attempted provide the navaho with emergency waters. they believe

>> i know that occurred, but we did analysis and they met all of our standards for irrigation. >> the san juan remains mercury. metal concentrations have returned to previous levels accord to go the federal government, but the navaho insist that's not acceptable. >> they say it's safe to use the water from this river for their crops, but they don't trust them, so their irrigation system remains shut down. >> the dust that fills this lifeline to the fields, they may let the water flow come spring, but shut it down as the storms disturb the settlement below. >> we're look at the water quality before and after the spring run off. >> she fears a lasting impact from what the colorado waters have brought. rick salinger,
