attacked a mother to be and cut an unborn child from her body. she lost that unborn daughter in that attack last march and took the stand to tell jurors about that assault in her own words and after about seven hours of deliberations the injury returned the guilty verdict. >> count number one criminal attempt to commit first degree murder we the jury find the defendant guilty of attempt to commit murder in the first degree. >> that injury found lane guilty on all six counts against her including assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy facing now potentially 100 years in prison. we had an emotional day certainly and we heard from michelle wilkins. let's tell people what she had to say. >> holding her parents hands while that verdict was being

as she has through the majority of the trial. michelle said she was relieved but for her it is far from over. wilkins walked out of the court house to address the media hugged her attorneys and read a written statement with her parents by her side. she feels vindicated, talked about forgiveness and says she is still angry. wilkins plans to be at the sentencing hear at the end of april and while she may never get the answer she wants she does want to make a statement. >> i stand before you today nearly a year since the vicious attack that nearly ended my life and ended the life of my soon to be daughter aurora. one thing that occurred to me through this process is i may never get an explanation from her and i've come to discover

anything from her. what i do want to express is my frustration and anger at the capitallousness of her actions actions--callousness of her actions and my intention is to express that knowing that i may never get anything from her. >> the defense did decline to comment on this case as did jurors but the jurors did stick around after that verdict and hugged michelle wilkins. the sentencing in this case is very complicated. that's what the district attorney is telling us but when the hearing does come around the maximum is between 110 and 120 years with a 16 year minimum. live at the boulder county court house jamie leary cbs 4 news. >> thanks very much. president obama has sent

guantanamo bay in cuba and move the detainies being held there to come here in colorado. mark albert has details. >> president obama announced his latest proposal to fulfill a campaign promise and close the detention facility at guantanamo bay in cuba. >> it's counter productive to our fight because they use it as propaganda in efforts to recruit. >> there are 91 prisoners and the plan is to transfer 35 of them to other countries. the remaining 56 including 9/11 mohamed would be moved to a facility in the u.s. the administration is looking at 13 including south carolina kansas and colorado. >> i don't want to pass this problem onto the next president whoever it is. >> the white house says moving the prisoners to the u.s. would save as much as $85 million per year but would take a one time

implement the plan which means getting the approval of congress and that appears unlikely. >> it would be illegal under current law to transfer a foreign terrorist into the united states. >> congress man mack thornberry the chairman called this a pr move and he cracked the door a bit when he told the radio it's not impossible to shut it down and he's willing to hold a hearing on the details of the president's proposal. the white house is urging congress to act quickly. mark albert for cbs news the white house. >> mentioned detainees could be sent to florence to the federal super max prison there and also reviewed the colorado state penitentiary has a possibility. corey gardner says it represents a grave threat to colorado and our national

for our west central and south west mountains. look at these totals the foothills 20.5-inches southeast of pine cliff. 15% 5 north of black hawk. 13 east of aliens park and 11- inches of evergreen. the snow is over with minus the mountain snow showers over there but really the issue right now the winds along the east of i-25 cranking out of the north northwest some near 40 miles per hour. coming up a cold night ahead and a warm up i think you are going to like. >> that i'll take. see you in a few minutes. eastbound lanes of i-70 remain closed as crews try to bring down more rocks after last week's slide and try to repair the damage to the highway and showed us why it is such a difficult task. >> isn't that appeasing?

it goes quite a way before it reaches the highway. contractors sent that video of rocks falling onto the highway. you don't want that if you are driving there. we could learn the identities of the burglary suspects accused of three hide outs. an officer shot yesterday continues to recover. karen talked to the homeowner who called police. >> and i see the guy right there. >> lenny was at home when he says two men tried breaking in one of his windows attempting to get inside. >> your instincts are like i'm going to get those guys. >> he never caught up with those men but instead called denver police. within minutes officers had spotted the suspects near 34th and irving. there a chase ensued and when closing in on those two men a female officer was shot in the leg. robert white says she's expected to be okay. >> everyone is putting their arms around each other and

to continue to do what this community expects of us. >> after that initial exchange of gunfire the suspect car jacked a woman and took off. witnesses say he fled down low, police close behind and bullets flying. >> the guy was shooting recklessly. i was afraid of getting shot with a stray bullet. >> i started hearing it so i knew it was coming. >> several blocks later that chase ended. one suspect was shot and killed the other taken into custody. after it was all over and knowing how violent those men were he's thankful they never made it into his home. >> i realize that my whole family could have been in danger if i did not respond one of them would have been in the house. >> karen cbs 4 news. >> an arizona family is dead their home torched. firefighters had to get on the roof of that home in glendale to battle the flames of reports home. five people are dead.

now to campaign 2016 republicans are tubing up criticism ahead of tonight's caucuses in nevada. frontrunner donald trump delivered a broad side against ted cruz. cruz is trying to explain his spokesman for tweeting a story that falsely accused white house hopeful marco rubio of insulting the bible. >> this guy cruz lies more than any human being i've ever dealt with. and he holds up the bible and he lies. this guy is sick. there's something wrong with this guy. >> trump has double digit leads heading into the caucuses tonight. the democrats are busy too trying to court minority voters to play a big role in saturday's democratic primary in south carolina. chris back now with a peek at what's coming down the road because you are going to like the sounds of this. >> you are going to love this weather. look outside right now it is already getting beautiful. back towards denver in the

the other way and look towards the continental divide. this is our camera in evergreen parkway. just a beautiful day after that overnight. ridge way. a little more cloud cover. snow showers in the south west part of the state but temperatures are responding to the clearing skies and the northern part of colorado up locations. still teens in places like ledville pretty chilly up there. northwest with two and a half inches of new snow. an inch from danny and thornton also 38. 6-inches of snow fell. diane had no snow now at 41 and bob's house at 37. here's doppler 4000 a handful of snow showers left in our central and southern mountains on their way out. this is really the story our eastern plains very gusty.

per hour in burlington and that's a cold wind coming out of the northwest. on future cast the handful of snow showers left out there quickly die off after sunset tonight mostly clear skies statewide stopping just before sunrise and a nice sunrise across colorado with a lot of clear skies out there. here is the storm that came through quickly reactioning havoc now here in louisiana. arkansas three tornado reports around new orleans this afternoon and late morning hours and more tornadoes risk for this part of the country today. this is our weather story a big ridge of high pressure sitting over california going to build into here for the rest of the week right into the first half of the coming weekend. things may be changing towards the end but a nice stretch of weather on the way. it will be a little cold tonight after a chilly afternoon mostly 40s on the eastern plains 20s and 30s up high.
