and two other deputies served an eviction notice. copter 4 as the video of the scene. 9:30 this morning the deputy twenty to a home, the home own -- went to a home, the homeowner was a known activist, came with a rifle and opened fire, killing deputy carrigan, a veteran of the police park county sheriff's office. the other two deputies were wounded. deputy kolby martin is in critical condition. just an hour ago, at a press conference, a fellow law officer remembered officer carrigan. >> he served his community in a superior way and he made the ultimate sacrifice today. and his service to that community. and as we go into the evening and we're doing things with our families, you know, we just ask that you keep nate and his entire family in your thoughts and in your prayers, turn on your porch lights, talk about nate, talk about all of the wond rful things that our -- wonderful things that our law

on the streets each and every day. >>reporter: a lot of broken hearts here today. a lot of questions, too, about what happened. there will be another press conference tomorrow. this flag is at half-staff now to honor an american hero killed in the line of duty. we're live in bailey tonight, tom mustin, cbs4 news. tom, thank you. cbs4's mark taylor is live outside of martin wirth's home, also in bailey where the shooting happens. mark, investigators have been there, combing the scene all day. >>reporter: this has been a very active scene, all day long. jim, we want to boeing r point out right now, several crews on scene, from multiple different police officer agency, they've been here all day keeping this area shut down. this whole incident happened just before 10:00 this morning, we did get a chance to talk to several of wirth's neighbors, they say that martin wishth kept to himself, but they were aware of his eviction situation. one neighbor says he had several altercations with the police,

where he felt the police were targeting him. ful she adds that she knew wirth had the weapons in his home but shocked he would use them against the police. >> things happen. you know, because the officers shouldn't have lost his life, there shouldn't be two officers in there wounded and i don't think martin should be dead. >>reporter: now, right now, the police are still investigating here at the scene. the bomb squad was here earlier with several team members sort of combing through what looked like his entire property, the police do say that there is no danger for residents who live in this area. live in bailey, mark taylor, cbs4 news. . thanks, mark. now, along with his work in the occupy moment, wirth was involved in local politics. 2014. brian maass has been looking into his background and joins us live fl the newsroom. >> martin wishth was 58 years

park county -- dispute over the park county home. >> there's no other evidentiary requirement. >>reporter: in this video posted to youtube, wishth admitted not making payments to the mortgage company, saying they were a bunch of crooks. >> i did not pay mortgage to the bunch of crooks. >>reporter: park county records show he lost his property to his mortgage company in 2014. after failing to pay, more than $116,000, he owed on the iris drive home. in 2013, wirth filed this federal complaint against governor john hickenlooper, asking that the state foreclosure laws be repealed and the government officials be criminally charged for depriving him of his civil rights. a federal magistrate later threw the wirth case out of court. in 2014, wirth ran for state senate, facebook posting he called himself a high value target. and railed on police. calling them a brutal impediment to human progress.

because i write such things, said wirth, cops want me dead. last month, things seemed to come to a head. park county arrested wirth january 20th for driving under restraint eluding the police. a judge signed this document, ordering the park county sheriff to evict wirth from his home. >> and i've looked through a lot of wirth writing on the internet, very, very violent in some ways. >> brian, thanks very much. right now, we want to tell you about a commute meeting gone to talk about what happened, also to remember the late deputy carrigan. right here, this is a live look at the platt canyon community church. we're going to update you on this angle of the story in less than 30 minutes. today, the denver district attorney ruled an officer was justified in shooting the man who shot him, six times, officer tony lopez, jr., seriously shurt in the shooting at 37th and

he was shot six times, lost a lot of blood. continues to under go physical therapy for his injuries. that suspect that he shot, jason wood, did survive. he is now facing several charges, in connection with the crime. right now, we're back to those dry conditions in colorado now, that along with windy weather, brought back the fire danger already to our eastern plains today. meteorologist justin mcheffey live with the mobile weather lap. justin, we could use more moisture. >>reporter: we certainly could, jim, it really didn't take too long. denver is back into the weather pattern that we saw around here last week. winds, dry vegetation and low relative humidity look at the state of colorado, barely a cloud in the sky, no moisture at all as we zoom out to the entire united states, something that we have seen a lot lately, a riblg of high pressure out -- ridge of high pressure out west, because colorado is so far displaced

not get a single flake of snow until either late this weekend or the middle part of next week. yes, it's dry, we got snow yesterday. but at least in the coming days, it is going to stay on the dry side. the high fire danger was in northeastern colorado today, we had the red flag warning. a look at the wind report, 37 miles per hour gusts at greeley. 41 at akron, 41 miles per hour at sterling. fort morgan, 45 miles per hour. but remember, the eastern plains did not benefit from much snow yesterday, so things out there certainly like kindling the longer we go without moisture. ed greene's forecast is coming up. live in arvada, justin mcheffey, cbs4 news. recent high winds forced firefighters to cut down trees in bear creek lake park today. those trees were nearly dead already after being submerged during flootding in 2013 and -- flooding in 2013. firefighters worried that others would come down. today, they ended up removing

update on a sky diving business that was once at the center of a lawsuit. last night, the longmont city council approved a new lease, with mile-high sky diving. it was a disappointing decision for people living near the airport, where mile-high operates. for years, they've been trying to get a judge to force the company to use a quieter place. now toshgs the president's plan to close the guantanamo bay detention center in cuba and move prisoners to colorado. the feds recently toured super max in our state and last night presidential candidate hillary clinton mentioned colorado is already housing some terrorists. tonight, matt kroschel of the martin newsroom talks about travelling to florence today skepticism. >> town like this, and bring to the spotlight of everything, that's not what we want. >>reporter: the president's plan to bring guantanamo detainees

source of the infection is a person who recently moved to colorado from iowa. where there has been a mumps outbreak since july of last year. now, that person is thought to have spread the virus to three friends, two helths care workers who treated those patients have twoped the symptoms. >> -- developed the symptoms frmg all had jaw swelling, which is common for mumps and low grade fever. >> doctors say the mumps vaccine is 88% effective and immunity can wayne after 15-20 years. drivers love to complain about red light cameras, especially when we see the flash and know we're going to get a ticket frnts there's talk at the state capitol of restricting them. lauren dispirito is live under a red light at 6th and cal math with how this will work. lauren. >>reporter: so this year's bill would restrict cameras in certain roads, on arterial roads, the main ones, that connect drivers to highways,

so for example, this one on 6th, would be able to stay here. but in neighborhoods, on local have to go. colorado legislators have tried before. but this time, those against the compromise. >> so now, today, we're looking at a different bill. >>reporter: after failing to get a red light camera ban signed into law last year, representative steve -- now hos to push through a new plan. that would restrict the use of cameras by keeping them out of local streets. a house committee passed this bill 10-3. >> it's a good first down, a field. it's not a touchdown. >>reporter: but opponents are not giving up the fight, saying the cameras benefit communities. >> what's at risk is direct services to the children and

unanimous na she worries half a million dollars in funding would be lost under this bill. >> it's certainly not lieng anyone's pockets, it's going towards greatly needed services that help support the community. >>reporter: now, that this bill passed in committee today, it moves on to the house floor. and representative says that the governor's office has indicated that governor hickenlooper would sign this, but his spokes people told us today that the governor has not yet changed his mind from last year, when he vetoed two other bills regarded red light cameras. lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. chilly night. >> as the sun goes down, it gets chilly, got to 50 degree, it quickly. we do have a few clouds in the west and all over the west, high pressure keeping us in great shape.

and here's mark man -- showing a mountain cloud over keystone. this is pike's peak on a beautiful day. burgatory resort on a blue bird day with great snow. temperatures for tonight, mostly in the teens over the eastern plains. 20s will show up. single digits for the high country. and a few below 0 readings as well. in the west, temperatures in the teens and 20s. then if tomorrow, where we were today. temperatures in the 40s and 50s over the eastern plains. we'll find 20s and 30s for the mountain and out west, temperatures in the 40s and 50s. take a look at this forecast, for tonight, we'll have mostly clear skies, 23 and 20 are the overnight lows. for tomorrow, a nice, sunny day, 52 and 50, close to normal. but we'll get away from that. in the upwards fashion. 58 on friday. look at saturday, i'm putting 70 degrees, i don't know if you believe it, but i'm going to put it down there, it looks so good. 61 on monday.

break news at 6:30, the community of bailey is gathering at the platt canyon community church right now, to honor and remember deputy nate carrigan. deputy carrigan was killed in a shootout, while serving an eviction notice earlier today. the shooter was killed. >> two other deputies were taken to st. anthony hospital in lakewood. one of them has been released. deputy kolby martin remains in the hospital, he is in critical condition. cbs4's tom mustin live in bailey with the latest for us tonight. tom. >>reporter: well, karen, right now the flag is at half-staff bind me. the community and law enforcement officers say they are heart broken over the death of nate carrigan. he and two other officers were gunned down as they served an eviction notice at a home in bailey. video of the area of the scene this morning.

morning, deputies went to a home in the friendship ranch subdivision, that homeowner, 58-year-old martin wirth went back inside and opened fire with a rifle. killing deputy carrigan. the two other deputies were wounded. deputy kolby martin is in critical condition. captain mark hancock was treated and released at st. anthony's central. today, fellow officers remembered carrigan. more than 100 officers from the cbi, jefferson county sheriff's office, and park county, are working this case. >> so they're working steadily throughout the afternoon, and they're going to go deep into the night. long after the sun sets, to process as much of this area as they can and they'll keep coming back to the scene until it is processed as completely as possible and as professionally as our people are trained to do. >>reporter: so many emotions tonight and so many questions. there will be another press conference tomorrow with
