an officer fired shots at a suspect in evans. this is all happening on highway 85 and 37th avenue which is located south of greeley and we begin this morning with breaking news. thanks for joining us. i'm britt moreno. >> i'm alan gionet. let's go to shawn with details. you have learned what happened to the suspect. go ahead. >> reporter: yeah, we have a better idea of what may have led up to the shooting. it was 1:30 in the morning when two evans police officers were looking into a call about someone trespassing in this area at highway 35. they saw two male suspects. they believe one may have fired a shot at officers after running

later when they caught up with the suspects they took one into custody but there was an issue with the other. they say that suspect other appeared to have a weapon so an officer fired at him and he died of injuries. we are unclear if the first suspect was the one that may have had the weapon. still a lot of details we need cleared up in terms of the time line. we're getting our information from greeley police even though this involved two officers from evans police. there's a separate agency that oversees these type of investigations when you have an officer involved shooting. of course behind me we are dealing with quite a traffic situation. joel is here to help us figure out how to get around this.

here's la sal and greeley up top there and highway 85 that's closed. within the red circle there's a local detour. head south and back on to highway 85 and highway 52. you're stuck there with semis and other vehicles so it's going to add a lot of time to your commute. it's easier to take highway 34 this morning. we have an accident in the north bound direction of i-25 at 120th. let me take you to the live picture. you got traffic stacking up and the ramp to get on to i-25 in the north bound direction merging into that one lane. this is going to be a mess. >> not good for the morning commuters. skies are clear and pretty at least.

denver and 25 in boulder and 18 in avon. our cold spot this morning is gunnison at 18 below. a few clouds to start the day. clear and it will be a lovely day for us and temperatures in the 40s. by noon we will be in the 50s. sunshine and it will be nice out there. a big warm up this weekend. right now let's check in with brit and alan. heavy hearts in the community of bailey. we are expecting new information after a homeowner shot three park county deputies who were serving an eviction notice. colbie martin is still in critical condition after he was shot multiple times in the lower body. deputy nate carrigan was shot and killed.

talk about nate and all the wonderful things that our law enforcement officers are doing each day. >> he was a 13-year veteran and worked closely with the school coaching baseball and football. the second deputy shot is out of the hospital and we're hoping for an update on him. it's a tough morning for people there in bailey. >> all around the state. this is the second time we had a deputy killed. jamie is live at the hospital. let's get the latest on how he is doing and how people remember deputy nate carrigan. he underwent surgery after being shot multiple times in the lower half of his body.

completely shaken and last night they gathered at platte canyon church and are hopeful for the recovered deputy. this man left his mark on the entire community. those who didn't know the deputy couldn't help but fight back tears. >> it's very sad. it's a great community. and he was just doing his job. he cared about kids. i didn't know him but my wife coached at the high school and you know, when you're from a small mountain community you care. >> reporter: that second injured deputy was grazed by a bullet on his ear and also treated here at saint anthony's and we're told he's at home recoffering with his family.

more about the shooter, martin wirth. he posted videos online ranting about the government and police. he spent years in a battle with his mortgage company. in a youtube video he explains why he didn't make payments on his park county home which he eventually loss. >> i didn't pay mortgage to a bunch of crooks. >> in 2014 he ran for state senate. on his candidate facebook page he called police "a danger to us all and because i write such things cops want me dead." apparently had a violent history as well. he was acquitted of shooting and killing his fort collins neighbor in 1994 over a chess game. we have all the latest developments right here at cbs4

it's happening here off the north pacific coast highway. it's about 20 acres so far. we understand there could be possible evacuations at a nearby kid's camp. several people could have to be evacuated this morning because of the brush fire. >> lauren, we're back in trouble again. i expect we're going to see a lot more of this coming in california. >> yeah, possibly a dangerous season there. a live lookout side at these gorgeous colors in denver now. few clouds out there making for a perfect sunrise for us. i love the hot pink out there. winds today are greatly improved. it was nasty yesterday in the eastern plains and much calmer this morning. still expecting gusty winds at times but overall much improved.

19 in denver. 25 in boulder. 18 in avon and grand junction. still plenty of sunshine to start the day. we're looking at sunshine across the state and beautiful today. you can sneak outside and it is lovely. calmer winds overnight tonight and clear and few clouds out east and tomorrow morning wake up to more sunshine and even warmer tomorrow. get ready for warm temperatures to head our way. you may like the snow and want it to come back. you see high pressure dominating the next several days. you get warmer temperatures and not until monday you start to see the jet stream pattern and low pressure system coming through and a cold front that could bring rain and snow on monday night into tuesday morning so it will be a while before we see wet weather again. temperatures today 50 for us in

in evans this is south of greeley one person shot by police is dead. this is highway 85 and 37th street. one suspect pulled a gun and was shot by police. >> reporter: so now we know that one suspect died and another in custody. few more details about how this started.

in the morning that the two police officers were looking into a call of someone trespassing in the area and they came in contact with those two suspects and saw them run away. they think one of them fired at them and that's what created the perimeter. the police officers came in contact with them again and one of them may have been showing a weapon and that's what led to the officers firing and that one suspect dying. not sure exactly when he died from injuries from the shooting but we know there's quite a challenge in terms of containing the scene and collecting evidence. you will hear from police on the scene but for now we understand police aren't sure when they can open up the area so the challenge to get around it is here for some time. >> it's tough for drivers in the area. you see greeley here and evans and la salle.

and come down on highway 52 but that's the local detour and trucks are using that as well to get around and you will be stuck in that traffic. so it's easier to get on highway south. north bound along i-25 just getting word that all lanes have reopened in the north bound direction but the scene is not closed off. the onramp there still a mess. a car is facing the wrong direction. >> not good. busy morning on the roads but not so busy outside. let's check in with a live lookout side from eddy this morning. beautiful look at the orange glow over the city. great sunrise now. i tweeted out pictures of what's going on. a look from look out mountain later.

fortunately recovering at home with his family. but the second deputy is still here at saint anthony's hospital fighting for his life. the community in bailey still struggling to wrap their heads around what went wrong. they gathered for a vigil last night praying for the deputies and honoring corporal nate carrigan. we have the latest on the condition of the deputies in the hospital, next. the shooter martin wirth spent years fighting forclosure of his colorado home and he ranted online about police corruption and saying he would not pay. his neighbor predicted his own death. >> he says one of these days they're going to kill me. i thought they're not going to do that but i guess today is the day. coming up what one of

yesterday. 19 in denver, 16 in greeley, 23 26 in grand junction. as we look at the satellite and radar there are a few clouds moving out. mostly sunny after lunchtime. well. tomorrow morning fairly mild and more sunshine with warmer temperatures tomorrow. a couple warm days on tap. you may be thinking i want it to snow again and cold temperatures but unfortunately high pressure dominates over the next several days. it may not be until early next week we see a dig in the jet stream that could bring us colder air and more rain or snow. so keep watching this because it may not be until monday night or tuesday morning until we see rain or snow.

good morning everyone. breaking news out of well county this morning. two officers respond to a press passing call. an officer shot and killed a person and one of the suspects fired shots at them. this is happening on highway 85 and 37th street south of greeley. >> shawn has been gathering there. what's up, shawn? >>reporter: allen, now with the sun out we can get a better

and the large police presence. this all started around 1:30 in the morning when two evans police officers were looking into a call of someone trespassing in the area. they saw the two suspects appearing to run away and they think one of them fired at them and this perimeter was set up. they got one man in custody and the other they believed had a weapon so shots fired at the suspect and he died from his injuries. there's a special investigation going on and other police departments are here talked to us earlier about what it's like and the hard decisions officers make in the in these cases. injured. that's primary.

when we don't have a choice. >> reporter: so that's the sr. gent with greeley police. this is a challenge for folks longer to navigate the area. >> challenge is a light way of putting it shawn. this is tough for drivers. let me show you why. this is highway 85. this is north of greeley and a lot of folks take highway 85 exit to greeley. this morning i would suggest taking i-25. they finally got that cleared. should be a much better drive. and cut across on highway 34 rather than getting caught on the local detour along with the cars down there. you're going to be slowed down. south bound coming into town usual slowings dipping into the 30s. average speed is 37 miles per hour. let's take a look at what's happening outside this morning. beautiful view from look out mountain. you can see the trees are calm and winds are better.

and all over gun control gun control. >> the governor tweeted this out. people are remembering him in other parts of the nation as well. this is a tweet from the chicago police department. people are sending well wishes to critically injured deputy colbie martin who was shot body. jamie leary is live with details. >> reporter: a bullet grazed the ear of one of the deputies and recovering. colbie martin is still here fighting for his life.

martin was shot multiple times in his lower body. at one point they were asking for blood donations. demand quickly met by the community. the community is shaken and they held a vigil last night. >> he helped at the high school. he was a coach. a professional who works with me, it was her son. his life was taken in a brutal way. it's been hard on us. >> reporter: at last check colbie martin was still in serious condition at saint anthony's and we will continue to gather information. in lake wood jamie leary. the shooter martin wirth posted videos online ranting

this morning people in virginia mourning lives lost. a two year old boy was among those killed. another man found dead. a tornado hit nearby in essex county. >> we were in the middle of the house when it came through and it just demolished everything. >> the storms have killed at least eight people. winter advisories stretch 1400 miles from texas to delaware with 50 million people in the storm's path. the same system brought tornados to southern louisiana and mississippi on tuesday where at least three people died there. republicans debate in houston, texas before super tuesday. can anyone stop donald trump? the front runner said he will be ready for tonight. >> we will be prepared.

aurora this morning and 20 in high land's ranch. satellite and radar, clouds shifting but overall colorado is very dry and will stay that way today. beautiful day and you really need a pair of sunglasses and a nice jacket this morning. clear skies and you will see the time tick away but not much activity across the colorado area. tomorrow is even warmer and still very sunny. taking a look at the jet stream you may be wondering you want it to snow and it's winter still but high pressure continues to dominate the western side of the country and we stay warm and dry through early next week. it's not until we watch this dip down monday and tuesday morning and bring colder temperatures and we may start to see changes. that's why we won't see real activity for the next couple of days.
