>> martin remains in serious condition. live in bailey tonight, melissa, corporal carrigan, had an impact on everyone who knew him. >>reporter: he really did, karen, he spent many seasons coaching kids here, on the field at platt canyon high and carrigan was a football and baseball coach, he was also a former school bus driver and school resource officer, one who some parents also remember as a student here. of. >>reporter: cathy barnett says she was the van mom to her son, matt, number 58 and his teammate, number 56. >> he was a really nice guy. >>reporter: nate carrigan who graduated from platt canyon high in 99 grew up to be a protector of his community. >> if i ever fwot pulled over -- got pulled over in this county, minutes. >>reporter: a deputy with the park county sheriff's office for the past 13 years. >> this is one of those things that should not have happened.

calls a high risk eviction, 8 deputies arrived wednesday morning to the home of 58-year-old martin wirth, just north of bailey, to get him out, and instead, were met with gunfire. >> we did not force a violent confrontation yesterday. mr. wirth did. we simply responded to the situation that was presented to us. >>reporter: three deputies were shot, including wounds to carrigan before the deputies returned fire, killing wirth. one deputy taken to st. anthony's hospital remains in serious condition. the superintendent says students and faculty alike are feeling the loss of the well-known and caring coach. >> that's the kind of character and the kind of condition nexts that he had with our students -- connections that he with our students and our staff, you know, he coached alongside of them. many of them he went to school with.

feeion say, we're told and -- feion say and four step daughter. his family is asking that the donations go to a scholarship fund set up in carrigan's name at bank of the west. cbs4 news. confrontation with the police left one man dead in evans near greeley, police were called out to check on a suspicious car, this all went down overnight on highway 85 near 37th street. and the investigation after the shooting shut down 85, starting at about 5:00 a.m. didn't reopen until an hour ago. investigators with a lot of work to do. cbs4's lauren dispirito live on scene, and lauren, police say the man now dead, shot at an officer. >>reporter: yes, they do say he shot first and he missed. they have been processing evidence here at the scene for more than 12 hours, we also spoke to a man who lives right along highway 85 here, he says he heard the whole thing and then found some of that evidence

>> looked like a movie. cop cars everywhere. chasing people. back and forth, all over. >>reporter: it was about 1:30 in the morning when the evans went to check on a suspicious veeg on highway 85 near 40th street. investigators say two male suspects ran and officers chased them. raymond al far ro woke touch the chase. >> cop cars around him. >>reporter: he suz he saw the officers -- says he saw the officers take one man into custody. >> i thought somebody was rattling my window. fire crackers, it was like, 10-12 shots. and then it stopped. >>reporter: investigators say after catching one man, a second suspect got away and hid for two hour, 3:30 a.m. the hopped suspect officer. he yelled, shoot me, kill me, three officers fired on him.

around here, for no reason, practically, to me it seems. >>reporter: the number of officer-involved shootings, 7 in the region since 2014, makes him scared for his grandchildren. he says he found a shell casing in his yard. >> i went to throw the trash and it was on the ground. hospital. so far, investigators are not releasing his name or the names of the officers. body camera were on and rolling at the time. l investigators are reviewing the video. later told us that they believe that the man who died was wanted on felony charges. it's unclear whether the officers knew that at the time of the shooting. lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. new information tonight on the arrest of a teacher in

nomination. and right now, hillary clinton has 503 and bernie sanders 70. while, colorado will be among those holding caucuses super tuesday, ours won't impact the delegate count. >> colorado, one of only a handful of states where republicans won't be weighing in on who the nominee for president should be. after the state party's executive committee decided to cancel l the presidential preference poll. >> we're talking about the presidency here, if you see what is happening in other states with caucuses, and polls, that concerns me. >>reporter: colorado republican party chair steve house, says the change comes after the republican national committee made preference polls binding. meaning the state's delegates are required to vote at the national convention for the candidate who wins the caucus. in the past, delegates could change their votes. >> how do you run a poll in a way that honors the the process being done right, without any

i still believe if you're going to do that, if you're going to candidate that may be the next president of the united states, voeting process that -- voting it. we advocate that a presidential primary is a good idea. >> this is an idea that both my agree on. >>reporter: rick, head of the colorado democratic party has worked for years on bringing back a presidential primary, but says caucuses are still key. >> like democracy at its finest, meeting in people's living rooms and schools and churches across the state and talking about who they're supporting for president, but talking about platform, of the democratic party, and talking about their state legislative races and county commission. >> the state democratic party won't award any delegates tuesday night, but we'll do a straw poll l and he says enthusiasm is high. >> our phones are ringing off the hook, we've had to call in extra volunteers to try to

>>reporter: the poll itself, informal, people show up, divide into clinton or sanders groups and volunteers count them up. but because results are reported to the media, both democratic candidates have campaigned here. while we haven't seen the republicans yet. >> in the end, colorado is going to get so much attention in the general election. that it's just going to be crazy. >>reporter: no question about that. the caucuses are the first of a four-step process, in choosing a nominee. typically, 2-3% of either party attends them, and another argument for a primary. and there are two proposed ballot measures this year to establish an open primary in colorado. meaning, unaffiliated voters could participate, too. next tuesday, though, not a primary, there will be no ballots. in fact, you can only attend the caucuses if you were registered as a republican or a democrat by january 4th. >> a lot of people have been asking for that. thanks.

new at 6:00 tonight, these two mean here armed with a shovel and a trowel, tackled three dogs attacking a postal worker, howard nathan is live in longmont tonight where this happened and howard, how is that postal l worker doing tonight. >>reporter: he will be okay, he's also eager to get back to work and as you indicated that gentleman, the letter carrier was lucky there was someone busy working with a shovel nearby. he saw the man get knocked down and he used this to chase the dogs away. earl raced up the block at a slightly quicker pace, he is 84, when three dogs pounced on the mailman. >> they had knocked him down. >>reporter: they ran out of their yards, earle's neighbor ran after him with his shovel and used it on the dogs. >> i didn't like doing it, but

he would be in the hospital now. >>reporter: jim saw what had happened to the mailman, he took off. a little faster than earl. >> he got them off, and then i went up and called 911 and they come back and bit me. >>reporter: where did you get bitten? >> my leg. >>reporter: earl was armed with his trowel. >> that's the only weapon i had. >> our whole family is horribly upset. >>reporter: the mother of the dogs says this is not typical for these dogs. >> these are family dogs that are around kids and people all the time. >>reporter: the gate they used to make the escape will be fortified. >> i understand how frightening this is, and this will never happen again. >> in the meantime, what's earle's advice? what would you say to the mailman the next time he comes by. >> run faster. >>reporter: now, the dog owners could face a fine of some $3,000.

by the way, earlier this week, monday, here in longmont, a meter reader was bitten by a dog, and that meter reader spent a couple of days in the hospital. reporting live in longmont, howard nathan, cbs4 news. all right. thank you, howard. we have in u information about the coming expansion of e-470 this the april, crews will start widening an 8 mile stretch of the highway from parker road to quincy avenue. the highway will go from 2 lanes in each direction up to 3. cost about 80 million, tolls will help pay for it. traffic op e-470 is up more than 10 northwest year, construction last night, at a community meeting, a lot of people were asking about the possibility of new sound barrier walls in the e-470 people say they are working on that. there are plans to completely revamp denver's performing arts complex. the project would get rid of the concert hall and replace it with a smaller venue, here's a rendering of how things would look.
