,, ,, hi, everybody. i'm alan gionet. >> and i'm britt moreno. thanks for joining us right here on the cbs 4 morning news. i'm jaime leary live at the capital. i'll show you what to expect on this super tuesday from both sides. some caucuses expected to produce interesting results tonight. details right around the corner. a front runner trump up front -- a cigarette agent and a photograph -- a secret service and a photographer goes for round.

it's super tuesday. a huge day in presidential campaign. let's get a look at the forecast. >> march 1st already. lauren whitney is tracking the forecast for us. good morning. >> good morning. it's windy out there. berthoud pass, winds are 24 to $45 mile an hour. heading into the denver area, not too bad for us. gusty as you head towards the foothills. golden winds at 20 miles-an-hour. shifting to loveland pass, berthoud pass and kenosha pass, winds at 30 miles-an-hour. gusty in our high country and foothills. down from yesterday, but don't get too excited because tomorrow the winds are going to crank back up. we start off with 34 in grand junction today. 23 in meeker and 21 in steamboat and 18 in led boat and 32 in boulder and 21 in greeley. on our satellite and radar, skies clear and a few clouds and we'll see that on and off during the day. on our hour-by-hour forecast, noon today, 53. 56 by 2:00 and 53

to talk about the wind we're looking at for tomorrow in a moment. joel, how is the drive going? >> we're seeing a single file line of cars due to the express lanes project. the right lane getting by ask that's going to cost you a couple of minutes, but speeds in the 50s as you get down there and into the 60s. 10 minutes from i-70. the slower portion near us 36. here's across the denver metro area. in the high country, we have chain and passenger restrictions in place as you get over loveland pass and into the eisenhower johnson tunnel. the biggest day for the presidential race. tonight's gatherings will not impact how our state allocates its delegates meaning your say in the process is limited. jaime leary live from the capital. we

>>reporter: those in our state will take part in the contest. they'll gather, but won't take poll. the outcome here tonight count. republicans aren't going to be -- the state democratic tonight. the candidates will have a better idea on the democratic side where they stand in colorado once voters caucus democrats are going to ask their voters for a favorite in the 2016 race this is going to highlight which candidate is the most popular among party activist. not always proven until the end, it favorite is. trump is leading rubio, cruz and the rest of the gop field in several states in play.

rack up more delegates than it's the first process in selecting a nominee. >> 2 or 3% attend. you can find your precinct information on 4 morning news. >> there's a lot of discussion about the primaries. thank you very much. a crowd was cheering and a secret service agent facing questions. we see how other candidates are weighing in on the take down of a photographer. >>reporter: at trump's event, the celebrity candidate was upstaged. interrupted when a secret service agent grabbed the neck of a photographer and slammed him to ground. inside the republican party, a different fight brewing with some refusing to support trump

>> i'm not going to vote for clinton and given what we know about clinton, i'm not going to vote for that guy either. i have to look for a third party option. >> they're on full display. >> he's trying to create a scam. >> if trump is the nominee, hillary in all likely hood wins. >> clinton focuses on republicans instead of sanders. >> at some point you can't say whatever pops in your head if you want to be the president of the united states of america. >> sanders not giving up hope although -- it will make a dent in his campaign. >> we can win the democratic nomination. [ cheering ] >> i'm mary malunaey reporting. an update on the man who confessed to the shooting at the planned parenthood last november. three people killed. robert dear tells cbs 4 he believe s s the judge and his lawyers want him labeled as mentally incompetent. >>reporter: he's back in the el paso jail after a mental exam. we weren't allowed to bring in a recording device. deer told the court he would not corporate with psychiatrist. >> i'm not going to agree to their mental health evaluation. >> today he said during his stay at the hospital, he did cooperate with the exam. he claimed the doctor asked him to

identifying animals in pictures. >> there are two parts to determine competency. are you able to understand the charges against you? deer told me he was. there are 179. can you assist to your own defense? he said that would not be necessary. >> he insisted he still wants to plead guilty. but said his lawyers don't want that. if i plead not guilty by reason of insanity, deer said, that would diminish my cause. one thing he was not asked about in the exam was the planned parenthood attack which he told us about by phone last month. >> the goal was to stop babies from being slaughtered. >> that was rick sallinger reporting. >> the exam will be given late march. dry conditions helped fuel a fire in east denver. karen

calmer, but it's not going to last long. gusty winds tomorrow into the eastern plains. tomorrow is going to be under a fire weather watch. we're talking low humidity. very gusty winds. we could see winds 50 miles-an-hour in denver. we're windy and dry. fire danger high tomorrow. we're going to watch that, but this isn't for today, it's for tomorrow. just to keep you posted for the future. we're cooler than yesterday. we have a front coming through and cooled us off last night. 12 degrees cooler in denver. 14 degrees cooler in denver. 14 under colorado springs compared to yesterday. that puts us at 29 here in denver. 34 in fort collins. 20s, 30s on the eastern plains. teens and 20s in the mountains and 20s, low 30s on the western slope. we have clouds out there this morning. could be light snow in the high country. as we look at

possible in the high country. snow today, light in the high country. overnight tonight, that clears, but tomorrow, we'll have another surge of snow. what we get is that really gusty wind. it's going to crank up and should relax overnight. 59 in fort collins or greeley. 50s, 60s on the eastern plains. 41 in frisco. 39 in steamboat and 59 in grand junction. 59 by noon. 56 by 2 m. 65 degrees tomorrow. 66 on thursday. and we're warm as we head into weekend. let's check in with joel. how is our morning drive shaping out? >> we've had some cones up southbound heading into town. looks like they backed up and picked those up except for the far left lane. that's going to

we did see speeds dipping into the 30s as you got passed 120th. they picked back up into the 60s. that drive, 13 minutes from i-20. seeing slowing passed i-36. a lot of green on this map. we have had some chain restriction in the high country that has expired and we have passenger restrictions in place. us 6 over loveland pass. britt. joel, thank you. time is making news in the health watch. springing ahead and falling back an hour may be linked to a higher risk of stroke. that's according to those in finland. they tracked more than 3 thousand numb patients and found stroke risk jumped 8% during the first day of time changing. monitoring works better for treatment for many men with

time to get going. >> here comes the fund. cbs news analyst jill wagner. you say tax credits are the best way to reduce your bill. why is that? >>reporter: because credits reduce that tax bill dollar for dollar instead of being calculated based on your tax bracket like deductions. some of the best ones include the earned income tax credit for low and middle income workers. maximum is over $6200. a dollar amount does vary by your family size. child tax credit, 1,000 bucks for each qualifying child under the age of 17. this phases out for higher earnings. the child independent care credit is overlooked. it's available when you pay someone to care for a dependent under the age of 13 so you can work

maxes out at 6. >> let's talk about deductions. >> you look at those deductible expenses and see whether they exceed the 2015 standard deduction limit of $6300 for single filers. $9250 if you're head of household. 12,600 for joint filers. if it's more, you itemize. let's look at the deductions. charity contributions, state and local taxes, but some taxpayers are overlooking a category called miscellaneous deduction that includes your tax fees, job hunting expenses, medical expenses. to claim this deduction, the total has to be more than 10% of your adjusted gross income. 7% if you're over

deducting sales tax can be valuable if you made a big purchase last year or live in a state with no state tax. >> that's a big one. there's a penalty for not having health insurance. it has increased. it's the greater of 275 bucks per adult. there's a whole bunch of exemptions. hardship, health coverage, financial status. membership in some groups. to find out if you qualify from an exemption, then you must go to healthcare.gov and see if you qualify. if you do, you've got to file an irs form 8965. so go check it out. we have a nice link, healthcare.gov. a lot of people won't have to pay this penalty. >> that's good info. jill,

>> let's look at the forecast now. lauren has that. >> no travel delays and mild for the west coast. we have rain and snow arriving into the pacific northwest. the most -- we have snow right now through the midwest. parts of wisconsin and michigan getting a lot. the warm parts is in missouri and arkansas bringing thunderstorms, but as this moves to the southeast, a chance for severe weather today. large hail and damaging straight line winds. possibly even isolated tornado in this spot. up into the northeast, temperatures are mild. 46 in new york city and 63 in washington dc. let's check in with joel hillan. how is our morning drive going? >> excellent start to the morning commute this morning. take a look into the high country. we've had passenger and chain restrictions that was in place that has expired. southbound coming into down, that's where we see the slowing passed us 36 to i-70.
