had to be towed away from that scene. now, to breaking news tonight, a shakeup at the park county sheriff's department. just a week after a man killed a deputy and wounded two others. happened as they served an eviction notice. political activist martin wirth. he killed nate carrigan. we know the undersheriff has been placed on leave, and a sergeant demoted can then resigned. cbs4 investigator brian maass with exclusive details and this is an enormous fallout from the incident. >> the park county sheriff took action. moving to demote one, veteran sergeant. senior sergeant t wells was being denoted to the rank of deputy, and he resigned the same day. monday. tonight, the sheriff told me the demotion was related to the oversielth in the handle -- oversight in the handling of the incident. the sheriff says this was

he declined to provide other details. he believed he was a scapegoat for what happened and he says he doesn't know why he was being demoted. the sheriff places undersheriff monte gore on paid administrative leave. there were some problems, with the way gore notified corporate carrigan's father about his death. the suspension was a result of a series of events and administrative actions that were done incorrectly. according to the sheriff. he declined to elaborate. we've not been able to reach the undersheriff for comment. all of this as planned for the funeral of carrigan. so unfortunate that this is happening now and probably not the end of the story. >> brian, thank you. >> you bet. developing tonight, a standoff at a home in denver after a man trying to escape from the police barged in on two women, having a bible study. they were able the to make a daring escape and the police, with the help of the s.w.a.t. team, tried the keep their

a man set fire fo a vehicle and a trailer after midnight on sunday. this different surveillance camera caught the suspect apparently then attacking a mailbox. and twoping now, police issue a medina alert to try to track down a driver who hit a woman and took off. the 66-year-old was hit while walking across park avenue west at tremont place last night. she is in critical condition. witnesses told the police there were several people in the car that hit her. they're looking for a car like this one, a blue 1998 lincoln town car with colorado license plate qki-285. and it is missing the side mirror. you surely felt the wild today. the state patrol shared this picture of a truck in larimer county, the wind sheered the side off the rig. justin mcheffey checking in from

recorded some impressive gusts today. >>reporter: the jet stream was nicking down to the ground today, jim, that along with very low level humidity, bone dry vegetation, the fire danger is high. so not only today, but several other days this week, we could see similar conditions with high fire danger east of the mountains. because we don't have any snow cover left, it has not snowed the past several weeks, that means that the threat for wildfires is up, at least through next weekend. take a look at the wind gusts we had today. akron in washington county, 49 miles per hour. dia at 53 miles per hour. rocky flats at 63 miles per hour. on top of copper mountain, 64. gold hill, 67. and in boulder, 69 mile an hour wind gusts were felt around here today. it was a breezy one. coming up in a few minute, ed greene has you warm forecast. justin mcheffey, cbs4 news. and the water service back on in the area of 3rd and holley in denver, a broken water main

today. the street had to be dug up. a nearby business was fleeded. this is the -- flooded. this is the third main break in the stretch of holley in the fast pew years, they say it's past time for a permanent fix. >> annoyed. i wish the city would get it together and fix our pipes in that corner, it keeps happening constantly. they were here a week ago trying to fix it. >> they restored service is about 70 tonight. but crews will be out until midnight patching up the road. a family torn apart tonight. a murder-suicide in commerce city. police say a man shot and killed -- tom, that's where the police held a community meeting, they wanted to talk about domestic violence. >>reporter: karen, that meeting ended about an hour and a half ago. he had a history of domestic violence, can police were quick to point out he is no

even so, some friends of the victim say that information is way too little, too late. >> it breaks my heart. >>reporter: westminster neighbors were in shock after the death of monica montoya. >> it's a broken family. and you know, you hope that everything comes together for them. >>reporter: the popular 43-year-old was the mother of 9-year-old triplets. >> the three kids were auz outside playing, we saw them oulz outside all the time -- outside all the time. >>reporter: she was seen outside. after receiving a franltic phone call, montoya raced to her mother's home in commerce city. a confrontation ensued. her stepfather opened fire, killing montoya and himself. cathy gurmen says montoya was an engineer and the perfect wife and neighbor. >> monica was a great person. she always was friendly and kind, kind of shy and reserved but always friendly and kind. may she rest in peace.

into the field. >> and burst into flames. sparking a 10-acre grass fire. the coroner's office says it will take several days to identify the victims. the search for a credit card thief, police say the man in these surveillance pictures stole a credit card from a home on pleasant street in boulder last month. police believe just two days later, he stole another card. from a woman's wallet at a safeway store. the thief used those stolen cards, it's several locations in the metro area. a denver mail carrier finds a toddler wandering along the busy street. >> i just thought i'd get over there as quick as i could because she could dart out in the middle of the road. >> how she got so far from home. >> thieves storm a gun store in a well-planned heist. how many guns they stole in 2 minutes. >> hackers invading your home through everything from computers to baby monitors and appliances. >> game over, all because we hack the other. >> stopping them requires more

traffic this morning, robert bentley saw a toddler. wearing nothing but a diaper and a t-shirt, standing in the median, alone. >> he was 15 seconds, just -- i just put down everything, all my mail and just put it in drive and took off. straight for her. >>reporter: it was like a scene from the movie. the mail carrier blocked the traffic and went into the street to get her to safety. >> cars were going by. and i just thought i'd get over there as quick as i could because she could dart out in the middle of the road. >>reporter: adams county deputies arrived and scoured the neighborhood, looking for parents, learning the toddler was under the care of her grandfather. who allegedly left her in front of the tv and went to a different room. the 2-year-old walked out the front door, she's back with her parents tonight. >> it's mind blowing but i'm just glad she's safe, and hopefully back with her mom. >>reporter: when it was time to act, he didn't hesitate and then. >> you're welcome.

this mail route has been his for nearly 5 years. and spend your days going up to the same front doors, it's easy to see why this felt like it was happening in his own backyard. >> out here every day, and kind of see what's going on. >>reporter: that grandfather has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse. the names of the involved parties have not been released. live tonight in adams county, stan bush, cbs4 news. thank you, stan. and a developing story now, three people arrested after a bold robbery, at this gun store in houston. this large group of thieves used a pickup truck to rip the front doors off, the gang then storms inside, smashes the glass cases, and takes dozens of weapons. and investigators say 50 guns were stolen if less than 2 minutes. three of the suspects have been identified and arrest. police are trying to recover the stolen firearms. campaign triks, there -- 2016, there is fall out.

nearly 122,000 people turned out. all over our state to support their favorite candidate. well, that made for long lines, and hours long wait times. at some caucus locations. that has lawmakers pushing to bring back colorado's presidential primary. >> we probably outgrown the caucus system. and it's probably time to figure out whether or not we can do a dual track parallel system, that has caucuses that go on and as well as presidential primaries. >> and now, many unaffiliated voters want in on the action, they make up the largest voting group here in colorado. but our caucuses are for registered party members only. a proposed ballot measure could change that in the future. a traffic stop in new mexico takes a dangerous turn, a driver speeds away, dragging a deputy. >> get out of the car. come on. if you're not got going to get out -- [ inaudible ] stop the car!

>> that driver pulled over for an ajtive warrant. he -- an active warrant. he tried to forcibly pull him out. the driver took off. he stopped ands was arrested. then that deputy was not injured. >> hard to believe. >> amazing. we saw powerful winds along the front range. >> those winds are starting to relax, just a little. let me show you what i mean. we had the jet stream over colorado today, justin told you, those winds transferred to the surface and that picked up the winds today. the jet stream is lifting off to the northeast. and the lift you get is that jet stream goes shooting by, starts those showers up and it just continues right underneath that jet stream, the lift provides the shower, 150 miles per hour, pretty strong today, again, it is moving out of our area. so we will calm down those winds. ahead of that, we have some snow, behind it, we had rain and a few scattered snow showers moving into new england. and pretty sunny all the way down here, phoenix today, 90 degrees.

up in evergreen, we had gray skies down here early y they had a pretty good snow shower going on. and right now, this is downtown, you can see the winds are still strong, at this hour, so they are still pretty gusty. they'll be gusty off and on for next 3-4 hours, you can see 3 miles per hour, just out at the airport. but in aurora, they're at 22 miles per hour. 56 mile an hour gusts in nederland right now. by 2:00 a.m., you can see there in the teens and 20s around the greater metro area, with 30-mile an hour gusts in evergreen. and then as they calm down, only l this the single tijts, through tomorrow -- digits through tomorrow afternoon, in the evening about this time, a little breezy out in the east, to the south. not too much to the north. and the foothills still gusty. so they do calm down, breezy tomorrow. 61 and 60 were the highs today after starts after 36 and 38. 50 and 23 would be normal. from the weather watchers, franktown had 55. 57 in southwest lone tree.

nice day at 65 degrees. the winds. look at this from pete, a mountain blue bird from morrison. cynthia, you can see these little clouds almost, it is snow, in that strong winds blowing off sunrise peak in silver plume. the sunset from deer trail. temperatures for tonight, we'll be mostly in the teens, 20s, 30s over the eastern plains, and out west, temperatures in the 20s, 30s. then, tomorrow, warmer day, less wind, so we'll see 60s, nearing 70 in some locations, 40s, 50s at the higher elevations, 50s, 60, to 70 out west. the forecast goes this way. mostly clear skies tonight, the winds dethe crease after midnight, 35-32 are the overnight lows. tomorrow, partly cloudy sky. we're in the mid to upper 60s, friday a bit cooler at 61 degrees.
