a judge sentenced susan hinajosa to eight years in prison for swindling at-risk adults out of thousands of dollars. jamie, those victims were promised they'd get nice home improvements. >> reporter: >> they would generally request half or full payment upfront. and then the scam comes into play when they don't use the money to complete the projects. >> reporter: even when they knew kitchens for less was tanking, susan hinajosa and her husband continued to solicit business. >> they took my money knowing that, and left a single parent taking care of an elder family member with nothing. i had no kitchen, no bathroom, and an open sewer line for five months. >> reporter: christine wilson's story is just one of the 27. and it goes further. jason took over

worked out of, but not before giving herman $19,000 to go into business together. they filed for bankruptcy soon after, and it took jason months to get them out of the building. >> i couldn't even sign the lease yet fully because the bankruptcy protected herman. and we couldn't even kick them out for the first two months were >> reporter: jason ended up finishing some of the victims 'kitchens for free. and the hinajosas never paid him back in full. >> most of our victims the see little if any restitution, even after her sentence is complete. so i think justice has been served with that sentence. >> there was so much more that was taken from me. just in emotional things that i'll never get back. >> reporter: this is not the first run-in with the law for herman. in 2014 he was arrested in texas by federal authorities. he spent time in federal prison for that. we're told that herman

in relation to the case. the district attorney's office said the victims lost more than $140,000 to susan and herman's business. and it's expected that each of the victims on average will receive restitution in the amount of about $5,000. but that is still yet to be determined. the latest on the investigation into what started a fire that left some families without a home in estes park. chopper 4 was overhead this morning as crews put out those flames. the fire got going at about 4:30 am. the building has heavy damage. the red cross says that fire displaced 20 people, including six children. new developments in the oj simpson murder case. that's right. police in l.a. are now investigating after a knife was found on the property where simpson was living at the time of those murders. the new lead comes more than 20 years after

simpson and ron goldman. live at the l.a. police headquarters, and we all recall it was known as the trial of the century when simpson was acquitted in 1995. >> reporter: the trial of the century, that's right. and it's important to stress that this investigation is still in its early stages. and they aren't saying yet or don't know if it actually is a piece of evidence or not. through the years, authorities have searched for a murder weapon but all leads have turned up cold. los angeles police announced friday that investigators are now testing a knife that a construction worker allegedly found on the property formerly owned by oj simpson. >> within the last month, land became aware -- lapd became aware of an item that was allegedly recovered by a citizen at the rockingham property, possibly during the demolition of the site. >> reporter: a worker who

says he turned the knife over to ago. the lapd says when detectives discovered the now retired officer had the knife, they launched an investigation. they said the former officer believed the case was closed and kept it. >> this is an lapd officer he want didn't know to turn it in? >> i don't know what his statement is. i don't have at this time. >> reporter: the lapd's robbery homicide division is testing the knife for hair, fingerprints and other dna. in 1995, simpson was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife, nicole brown, and her friend, ron goldman. case continues to fascinate the public. more than 20 years later, a new tv mini-series debuted with strong ratings. >> you have to question the timing, right test the mini-series on the oj case and all of a sudden they come up with this knife? it's gonna raise some eyebrows. >> reporter: the lapd says the knife story could be "bogus." but since there's been no

open. >> reporter: and since simpson was found not guilty of the charges, he cannot be tried again. if the evidence does link to the case, then authorities say they will determine what charges if any the retired officer could face. new information on the search for a man claiming to be a psychic who conned a woman in larimer county out of $75,000. police in maryland have arrested adam marks. he never showed up for his sentencing after a plea deal in 2014. at the time he agreed to repay the victim to avoid six years in jail. and developing now, nursing this dog back to health, it was dropped off at a local shelter severely malnourished. and a cruelty investigation has begun.

the good news, petunia is expected to recover. >> reporter: they really didn't know when she came in, whether or not she would survive. they're focused on finding whoever might have done this. they're hoping to find the two people shown in surveillance pics that they released today. those pictures show the people february 17th. they think they're in their 20s but they at the time, the dog that's now named petunia was only 19 pounds. that is 14 pounds underweight. they didn't know if she would survive. since she's gained about 3 pounds back. that's really good progress. she has a long way to go. now they just want to talk to these people and find out more information. >> they're not suspects. i just want to make that clear. we just want to talk to them. see if they have anymore information for us so we can check the neighborhood, see where shay
