she's wagging her tail, really friendly. she was socialized. >> reporter: there is a $2,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in this case. if you know anything about this dog, call crime stoppers. developing now guns stolen from the home of a brighton police officer. they've identified the burglar as 33-year-old gerald havis, homeless and may be staying with friends or relatives in denver or lakewood. police are warning people not to confront him since he is believed to be armed. a deputy arrested for investigation of domestic violence. bob trujillo was arrested for investigation of false imprisonment, assault, and domestic violence. he worked at

he's been placed on administrative leave. a woman convicted of running a kitchen remodeling scam in adams county has been sentenced to eight years in prison. susan hinajosa and her husband owned kitchens for less. investigators say the two took money from customers but never did the work. jamie leery is outside the courthouse. there are dozens of victims in all this. >> reporter: 27 victims in total. many of them present this morning just trying to recoup what losses they can. the victims were elderly mostly or disabled. they trying to recoup those losses. in total, $140,000 and what they lost from susan and her husband herman who republican that business term -- who ran that business together. >> they would request half or full payment upfront. and then the scam comes into play when they don't use the money to complete the projects.

knew kitchens for less was tanking, susan and her husband herman continued to solicit business. >> they took my money knowing that, and left a single parent taking care of an elder family member with nothing. i had no kitchen, no main bathroom, and an open sewer line for five months. >> reporter: christine's story is just one of 27. and it goes even further. jason took over the building the hinajosas worked out of, but not before giving herman $19,000 to go into business together. hinajosas file forward bankruptcy shortly after. and it took jason months to get them out of the building. >> i couldn't even sign the lease yet fully because the bankruptcy protected herman. and we couldn't even kick them out for the first two months. >> reporter: jason ended up finishing some of the victims' kitchens for free. and the hinajosas never paid him back in full. >> most of our victims will see

after her sentence is complete. i think justice has been served with that sentence. >> there was so much more that was taken from me. emotional things that i'll never get back. >> reporter: this is not the first time herman has had a run-in with the law. he was arrested in 2014 in texas for probation violation unrelated to this case. we're told he will be in court sometime this month in relation to this particular case. on average the district attorney's office tells us that each of the victims will receive about $5,000 in restitution. new details on a fire at an apartment building in estes park. fire crews are working to put out some lingering flames. this was on chapin lane just west of the stanley hotel. building is destroyed. 14 adults and six children will have to

cross is helping them find temporary housing for now. state lawmakers are working to create more affordable housing in colorado. three bels at the capitol now address our crisis. shaun boyd, there seems to be no end to these soaring prices. >> reporter: rent has increased more than 20% in colorado over the last decade. wait lists for affordable housing are so long, it takes two to three years to get a place. and many of the newly homeless are seniors on fixed incomes being evicted from places they once could afford. >> reporter: more than 2,000 homeless seniors come here to denver's senior support services each year. many of them like reed shay lor, homeless for the first time in their lives. >> i've always worked, always had money. >> reporter: after 30 years in the restaurant industry, he found himself out of work at age

the first time dedicate state funding for affordable housing. >> we could help those folk who is need rental assistance, we could building more affordable housing units, and help people with home ownership. right now we don't invest in any of those things. >> reporter: until we do, colorado's homeless population will continue to grow. >> reporter: two years ago, the senator and representative got a bill through that created a tax credit for builders of affordable housing and they have a fwoil extend that this year. it -- a bill to extend that this year. an update on a hit and run in denver. police have found the car they believe was involve bud have not been able to track down that driver. that driver hit a

crossing park avenue west tuesday night. she went to the hospital in critical condition. police believe several people were in that car that hit her. a hit and run driver in fort collins is accused of intentionally running over a pedestrian. police say ma krauss hit the victim from behind as he was walking at the hickory village mobile home park. a warrant is out for his arrest. investigators say he and the victim do know each other. it's not clear what motivated the alleged attack. a denver county home to hundreds of troubled teens each year is shutting down. 29 kids currently live at the family crisis center. and they'll have to find a new place by july. melissa garcia shows us why officials say closing the center is actually in the kids' best interests. >> this really isn't about cost-cutting. this is about better outcomes for kids. >> reporter: the family crisis

home in denver for abused and neglected teens is soon to be closing. july 1st, the 64 employees who work here will and the 29 kids who currently live here, new homes. >> it's sad because some of these kids don't have parents. >> reporter: it's a move that denver human services julie smith says has been under discussion for years. >> there's been a push to reduce congregate care usage because we see better outcomes family-like setting. >> reporter: she says the young residents at this county-run facility will be placed in foster homes or with family members instead. kids from a restrictive environment will go to private residential centers. with the operating budget of nearly $6 million, smith says closing the facility will free up funds for preventative services. >> we'll be able to put it into what we call front end services.

for families, positive parenting classes. >> reporter: melissa garcia, cbs 4 news. the county has scheduled two job fairs and two workshops to help family crisis center employees find new jobs. opponents of photo radar vans in sheridan have been trying to get them of them. but their efforts failed last year. why they think the issue gallon to the voter this is time around. and the blind and vision-impaired have a staggering unemployment rate in this country. a new institute in denver is working to put them to work. >> and high clouds we saw now just drifting down to the southeast and out of the state. to the west, let's of moisture coming in with the next system! and that moisture is gonna come our way first in the form of snow for the mountains. and then rain out on the eastern plains.

not to get rid of them. >> the people i talk to feel it's a money-grab. that it doesn't really do anything for safety. that it breeds public corruption in the sense that there's a lot of money at stake. >> the sheridan city manager argues it is effective because it gets people to slow down. a similar effort failed last year. 20 million americans are visually impaired, and 80% of them are unemployed or underemployed. an organization in denver is changing that sad statistic one success story at a time. mike has been legally blind since he was a child. now he uses accessible technology to run his business. >> i've had to figure out over time how to get stuff done. >> reporter: like so many other blind and visually impaired people, he figured out how to make the world work for him.

blind institute of technology. now he talks to big businesses nationwide about what he calls the greatest untapped resource in america. >> they're sitting on the sidelines unfortunately waiting for an organization to say, yeah, i'll take that chance. >> reporter: jimmy barretta took the chance. he hired mike kemp who's been visually impaired since birth. >> mike is great at leading teams. he shows a lot of confidence. >> how did you feel when you heard the statistic that 80% of the blind and visually impaired community is unemployed? >> i was floored! and i found these folks were so intelligent and so in tune with everything around them, there just is no reason not to at least give them a chance. >> reporter: kemp does project management work for brio solutions. he leans into his computer to see the type. a simple accommodation for a dedicated and valuable employee. >> mike as you go about your career, do you see yourself as

blind and visually impaired people can bring to these types of jobs? >> we all want to contribute to the world. and i have a 2-year-old son at home, so i want to make a world that i want him to live in. >> mike has placed 30 people through the blind institute of technology. his goal is 10,000. and knowing mike, i think he's gonna do it! [ laughter ] once again, good timing here, we have a wonderful weekend headed our way! as soon as the weekend is over, the weather changes. this is a big powerful system with lots of moisture moving into the west. they'll get an inch or two of rain out there. it'll move our way, then cold air will follow it and change the rain over to snow in the high country, rain on the eastern plains. a disturbance moving ahead of it. you can see snow in the chicago land area, rain to the south of that.

tournament. our guys don't look at travel as if it's anything big . rockies lost 9-4 to the a's today. gerardo parra went 2 for 2, had an rbi. and is outside of the bullpen, he was the rockies' most noteworthy signing this offseason. he's a 2-time gold glove win who are has plenty of experience playing at coors field when he was with the diamondbacks. he's also a longtime friend of carlos gonzalez. they grew up together in venezuela. >> i'm excited about having him back on my side. i think he's a really good player. i faced him a lot when he was with the diamondbacks. and i'm sure a lot of people in denver watched him play before. he's an exciting player to watch. and i think people are gonna love the way he plays. >> a little bit of time at center field, and left and right. >> it makes it easier to transition when you've got a good pal on the team. more than 20 years after the crime, a possible piece of evidence.

,, a strange turn in the oj simpson case, more than 20 years after the murders of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman. a new piece of evidence perhaps is being tested. it's a knife investigators say was found on a property owned by simpson at the time of the murders 21 years ago. teri okita reporting. it seems people still cannot get enough of this case. >> reporter: the trial of the century for sure. people keep talking about it. and it's important to stress they don't know if this is actually evidence. it's still very early on in the investigation. but initially sources are saying that they think the knife is inconsistent with the wounds

still it's been years and no murder weapo has been found. and to this point, all leads have gone cold. >> reporter: los angeles police announced friday that investigators are now testing a knife that a construction worker allegedly found on the property formerly owned by oj simpson. >> lapd became aware of an item that was allegedly recovered by a citizen at the rockingham property, possibly during the demolition of the site. >> reporter: a worker who helped level the home in 1998 says he turned the knife over to an off-duty lapd officer years ago. the lapd says when detectives discovered the now retired officer had the knife, they launched an investigation. they said the former officer believed the case was closed and kept it. >> he's an lapd officer. he didn't know to turn it in? >> i don't know what his
