still it's been years and no murder weapo has been found. and to this point, all leads have gone cold. >> reporter: los angeles police announced friday that investigators are now testing a knife that a construction worker allegedly found on the property formerly owned by oj simpson. >> lapd became aware of an item that was allegedly recovered by a citizen at the rockingham property, possibly during the demolition of the site. >> reporter: a worker who helped level the home in 1998 says he turned the knife over to an off-duty lapd officer years ago. the lapd says when detectives discovered the now retired officer had the knife, they launched an investigation. they said the former officer believed the case was closed and kept it. >> he's an lapd officer. he didn't know to turn it in? >> i don't know what his

>> reporter: the lapd's robbery homicide division is now testing the knife for hair, fingerprints, and other dna. in 1995, simpson was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife and her friend. the case continues to fascinate the public. more than 20 years later, a new tv mini-series debuted with strong ratings. >> you have to question the timing, right at the time of the mini-series on the case and they come up with this knife? it's gonna raise some eyebrows. >> reporter: the lapd says the knife story could be "bogus." but since there's been no conviction, the case remains open. >> reporter: simpson was not guilty. so he cannot be tried again for these crimes. if there is a link to the case, they will determine if the retired officer would be charged.

dropped out of the presidential race. carson hinted he would suspend his campaign earlier this week. he made it official today at the cpac convention, a major gathering of conservative voters. >> i am leaving the campaign trial. [ audience booing ] >> there's a lot of people who love me, they just want to vote for me but it's okay. [ laughter ] >> carson says he will move on to heading up a nonpartisan group aimed at getting more christian voters to the polls. plumbing crews in flint started replacing lead water pipes with copper today. it is the first step in fixing the problem. the mayor wants to replace 30 lines in 30 days, and pipes. the city wants to have more than 30 crews working full-time for a year to get the lead out of the water. >> we need to be focused on a

water system because we owe our residents something. we owe the people in this community something. >> the city is targeting homes in neighborhoods with the highest number of kids under six years old. senior citizens, and pregnant women. learning more about the adoptive parents of a 23-year-old ukrainian man accused of posing as a high school student. he was arrested last week. police say he posed as a student in pennsylvania for four years and had sexual relationships with underaged students. prosecutors now determining whether his parents helped him create a new identity through fake documents. >> most of those required some type of parental involvement. >> the adoptive parents have been sued 20 times, by the way, by landlords and credit companies over the past 13 years and ordered to pay more than $40,000.

wounded warrior project. last month, a cbs news investigation revealed the charity spent millions of dollars on lavish events, including one in colorado springs. cbs news has learned the organization is running without a full-time chief financial officer. >> reporter: with two sons in iraq, raising money for wounded warriors was more than a cause, it was a calling. since 2009, their charity, tee off for a cause, raised $325,000 for wounded warriors through golf tournaments in the carolinas. the organization even honored fred with an award for being a >> that's a big deal. >> yeah. >> you were proud of it. >> very proud! >> reporter: but allegations that only a little, over half, of donations, went to help wounded vets came as a blow.

waste of money and donor dollars that should have been going to the servicemen and women that were injured, and it was spent on their having a good time, it's a real disappointment. >> reporter: outraged, kane canceled this year's benefit tournament and start the a petition on change.org, calling for a public audit. >> i said where is he? where this is guy? and he said, well, our public relations chief told us that he really needs to not be involved. you lead from the front, good or bad. i said you don't hide. i don't understand how an organization that has many veterans who value honor and service and the chain of command can be led by a guy like that. >> reporter: cbs news has

major donors who are ending their support. >> should the board of directors have been keeping closer watch? >> absolutely. >> reporter: sources with direct knowledge of the charity's operations said the board signs off on all the charity's major spending, including expensive staff retreats. the board has spent donor dollars at its own meetings at 5-star hotels, including the wilshire in los angeles and the waldorph in new york. when they questioned spending decisions, they said we tried to speak with each board member in person but they declined. >> i believe it needs to be a forensic audit, not just some lay wash -- somebody that we're paying, and just have them kind of put a rubber stamp on it. >> are you done with the wounded warrior project? >> yes. exempt for my new mission of trying to see change there.

the u.s. economy added 224,000 jobs in january, more than expected. there was some bad news in the report. wages fell last month. wages are going up for entry level employees at costco. starting this month they'll be paid between $13 and $13.50 an hour, up at least a dollar. it's the first time costco has increased entry level wages in nine years. its highest paid employees make $22.50 an hour. new details on an unexpected comeback for bookstores. apparently business is booming at barnes and noble. that's compared to sales of its nook e-readers and internet sales. thoerz not doing as well as -- those are not doing well. but business is doing so well at brick and mortar locations, barnes and noble plans to launch four new prototype stores in the next fiscal year.

self-cleaning bodily harms for its passenger jets -- bathrooms for its passenger jet. it will be using uv light which kills the entire thing would be illuminated for three seconds after being used. toilet seats would raise automatically to make sure the light. the technology would use a type of uv light not harmful to people. the project is still
