. >>reporter: hello, and welcome xfinity monday live, hanging out at the viewhouse centennial on a peyton manning retirement monday. we're excited to have mark schlereth joining us here tonight to recap what went down at broncos headquarters today between the two of us we have three super bowl rings, we are qualified to talk about what happened. >> absolutely. >> i thought it went really well, peyton, had jokes, he had emotional. what was your impression from the day? >> well, i mean, i think number one, all the people that gathered together at the broncos facility to watch, and to honor peyton manning, and then the reverence with which he addresses the football perspective of his life and how important the game is to him, and how important it is to do the things right, and that's really what resonated with me today. is this is a guy who has dedicated himself as a father and a husband, but on the football field to his craft, and to what he wants to accomplish,
6:32 pm
himself to be the best he can possibly be, and he's been the best for the last 18 years. been amazing. the ride he's taken us all on from the indianapolis days to the broncos days as it comes to close. >> had great stories from when he first entered the nfl. he didn't talk a lot about his numbers and his accomplishments r but we're going to mention those. the coors light cold hard facts, peyton manning retires with so many records, most passing yards both the season and the career, most passing touchdowns for a season and a career. and total wins, 200 and five mvp's, you know, quite the resume to calf off a career. db cap off a career. >> i look back on my nfl kreeshgs i'll know without a doubt that i gave everything i could to -- the players who were more talented, but there was no one who could outprepare me. and because of that, i have no regrets. there's a scripture reading, second timothy 4: 7, i have fought the good fight and
6:33 pm
the faith. well, i fought a good fight. i have finished my football race. and after 18 years, it's time. >> we mentioned his records, is there one to you that stands out that defines peyton manning's career? >> well, not one that we mentioned there, but think about this, now. 18 year career. he missed the 2011 season because of the neck injury and the surgeries. so that makes a 17-year career where he played, he went to the playoffs 15 times as a starting quarterback. he didn't make it his rookie year, in 2002, he didn't make it. other than that, he went to the playoffs, every year. and an incredible accomplishment to drive your team and to be the leader of that football team like he was, and to have the kind of football -- that he had to be able to have the presence to drive that team to the playoffs.
6:34 pm
>> he gets knocked a little bit for his post-season record, but he finishes with a 14-13 overall record. two super bowls and obviously, one the final game. now is the right time to step away. >> absolutely, what you saw was you saw a guy that had to essentially take a step back, compared to what he was, he was always the alpha male, the guy in charge, he was always the guy at the line of scrimmage, running hiss of, and it got to the point where father time did its damage to peyton manning. and he no longer could be that guy. and to be able to step back from that and realize, you know what, i've got a great enough team around me, and i'm going to go ahead, on third down and hand the ball off. i'm going to do those things because i know that's going to give us the best opportunity to win, when your whole career, you've been the best opportunity to win and you can no longer do those things, that's the time when you have to be honest with yourself and say, it is time to move on, that's what he was able to do today. >> win thing i enjoyed -- one
6:35 pm
he loved playing football and he loved being part of a team. >> there's no question about that. and i think that's one thing that when you talk too guys, they'll all tell you he was so focused on his teammates, even though they drove thim hard. it was the teammates that he focused on the and relationships that he's built. and one thing that resonates with me with peyton manning during his course here as a denver broncos, to have the season he had, to be fulled with fr a game in kansas city, to struggle with the injury, come back, to agree to be the backup to brock osweiler week 17. you're sitting there in a divisional playoff game, against the pittsburgh steelers, and you take the kneel down, you win the game 23-16. can you have the where with all, to take that kneel down, and then go hand the ball to demaryius thomas, whose mother had just been released from prison, whose never seen him
6:36 pm
game ball for your mom tochlt be thinking about that because you're so myopic in you player, to be able to think about your teammates na that situation, i don't have that where with all. i don't have that in me. i was so, you know, singularly focused on what a had to do, i wouldn't have been thinking beyond that. goes to show you the kind of teammate peyton manning is, and he doesn't get enough credit for those things. teammates. monday live is brought to you by xfinity, use voice commands, change channels and get recommendations, all available with xfinity x-1.

,, ,, from viewhouse centennial. . >>reporter: and welcome back to xfinity monday live. the experience winner and you could be next. they get autographed things, and all the great things at the viewhouse, it is all from coors light. welcome back to xfinity monday live, hanging out with mark schlereth tonight. that was the big story today,
6:40 pm
week, and we knew that peyton manning wasn't coming back, whether he got cut or retired. but what are they going to do at quarterback, do you think brock . >> i think so, i think he will effort. i think the thing that brock needs to understand is you've got a defense that's caneable of you games. quarterback window yet. it's about the next contract, and so if you go somewhere, for a little bit more money and you're winning 6, 7, 8 games a year, the next contract is not going to be what this next contract will be, if you sign with the broncos and you win 11, 12 games, going to the playoffs. so that's the one thing you really have to look at, and i'm not a believer in the home down discount so to speak, but in this case, i think it really makes sense for brock to stay on the team that he's familiar with, and a defense that you know can win you ten games. >> a lot of free agents on this
6:41 pm
management staff could do. talk about the offensive line, mac, tore them apart. but the time they got the super bowl, things were getting a little bit better, they were at least serviceable. what do you see them doing with year? >> they'll be four new starters across the board on the offensive line. thi got to tear it apart -- they've got to tear it apart. both tackle positions have to be that's honesty and they did. coaching staff did a great job positions is to win. giving them a lot of short set type of quick throw stuff. so they could win, and be aggressive at the line of scrimmage. but they are to upgrade that position. especially with a young quarterback like brock. >> the defense, one of the al huff time best, we know vonn miller will be back, malik is the question mark. >> i don't know if you'll be that good, the run you had during the super bowl, but i think that they can still be outstanding. you're going to lose free
6:42 pm
the next man up philosophy. they are so solid at all three levels the linebacker level and this is a team that can have the dominant, dominant defense, and still play exceptionally well, but they have to get better on the offensive side of the ball. >> one player other than vonn back, who would it be. >> brock. >> more with mark schlereth coming up. for now, back to the cbs4 news studios, karen leigh. well, it's been a few weeks since the rock slide badly damaged i-70 in glenwood canyon
6:45 pm
6:46 pm
sure everyone was out and okay. one man removed propane tanks away from the fire. >> my kefrns the kids. -- concern was the kids. there's a lot of kids here, there are neighbors, that was only my concern. i wasn't afraid. >> firefighters say it's good for neighbors to take care of each other, but also a important not to risk yourself. happening tomorrow, cdot is closing i-70 through glenwood canyon for rock fall mitigation. they are trying to complete repairs after a massive rock slide last month. the rocks punched holes in the interstate. the stretch was closed for a week. one lane in each direction is open, cdot had warned we could see full closures like this one tomorrow, as repairs move forward. big thank-you to all of you who made the girls in science event this weekend a huge success. we had more than 11,000 people check out the clubhouses at the denver museum, of nature and science.
6:47 pm
girls got to try out the green screen, make rain gauges and can cloud finders. most of the girls we met loved math and science. >> some how, late elementary school into middle school, we lose them. and what this event does, hopefully, is as these girls age, reminds them of the really interesting careers that are out there. >> the event is also a reminder to parents to encourage your girls to pursue their interests. right now, let's get in with greene for the forecast. >> we had something for everybody today, with snow, rain, thunderstorms, and sunshine, this morning. look at doppler 4,000, and you can see this moisture that we had, that came through the metro area, has now kind of moved into nebraska and wyoming, still snow and even some thunderstorms up there. but if you look to the southwest, we still have some moisture moving through. couple of boughts of it. we could see a couple of showers move up into our state tomorrow and again on wednesday. but 55 is our high today. 56.
6:48 pm
before 9:00, then the front came through. tonight's low also be in the 20s and 30s over the eastern plains. single digits and teens for the high country. mostly 50s out east tomorrow, 30s and 40s for the mountains. 40s and 50s out west. and the forecast, tonight, clearing skies, 34 and 31. the overnight lows. tomorrow. partly cloudy, 53 and 51. the next several days, wednesday, isolated showers. 56. 61 and 67. saturday, 65. but yet another chance for scattered showers, karen. all right. looks pretty good, ed, thank you. the irs warning everyone to be aware of scammers posing as irs agents. it is an old mrou. >> if you haven't gotten this voice mail yourself, you know someone who has. >> [ inaudible ]. >>reporter: the irs scam is everywhere. >> especially this time of the
6:49 pm
see a lot of the scams increase. >>reporter: now, we're looking at how the scam has evolved and how they're using technology to trick you. >> it was a recorded message. >> i was surprised when i got the second call. and it was the same person. stop this scam? and what should you do if you get that call? the answers tonight at 10:00. all right. let's get back to mark haas at the viewhouse centennial. mark. >>reporter: thank you, karen, hanging out with mark schlereth manning retiring. we have the segment riddle me this, time for riddle me this brought to you by your colorado land rover retailers and the discovery sport, q and a session with the guests from the folks here at the viewhouse. what quarterback do you think they should go after if they can't get brock? >> it's a great question, there's not a whole lot left after brock. it's amazing, obviously, if it's patrick, he's going to resign
6:50 pm
because he had so much success. r.g. 3 will become available, maybe it's colin kaepernick. but brock is, when you look at the free agent quarterbacks out there, he's probably your number one choice, chase daniels is going to be a free agent from the kansas city chiefs, maybe it's that. but it's pretty slim pickings when you talk about free agent. >> do you think colin kaepernick would fit? >> they could make him fit, but they're going to understand what they can and kand do. you want to become a pew drop back passer, you dront the skill set if you're og 3 or colin kaepernick, you're going to have to rely on getting outside of the pocket. get the things that they designed for you and that's where rg3 had success with mike shanahan. you saw, you know, him get expose trd the lack of pew -- exposed from the lack of pure
6:51 pm
>> is your stinking good chile your own recipe? she likes the chicken best. >> no, it's my partner's recipe, when i was a trf bronco, i hurt my knee the very first day of training camp in 2000, i always take care of my own lawn, i take a ton of pride in that. a guy that did a bunch of the broncos in neighborhood, he came by, took care of my lawn for me. i found him a couple of days later in the neighborhood, i was on crutches, thanked him, and he said, i make the world's greatest green chili, can i bring it to you, i was 300 pounds, playing for the broncos, you're going to bring me food, i'm going to eat. fell in love with it, nine years, i begged him to go into business with me, we've gone r been going strong for 7 years now. it's his recipe. david bloom can and myself. >> we talk about quarterbacks and green chili. >> brought to you by your colorado land rover retailers. join us here at the viewhouse. coming up, we're going to talk about what could be next for

retirement. >> uh-huh. >> what do you see next for peyton? you don't have to choose one thing. you're an actor, on television, a business guy. what are the things you can see peyton doing? >> all of the above. he's going to have his choice. from a network standpoint. if he wants to go into network television, everyone is lined up for that now. i think he's going to go the way of john elway. he's such a football guy that that challenge to put teems together. a minority share in a football team. maybe in tennessee, he'll get the opportunity to essentially start that a speth of his -- aspect of his career. becoming the general manager, and then, you know, move on from there. that's really what i see him doing. but you know, your guess is as good as mine.
