right now at 10:00 temperatures dropping but warmer than normal for this time of year. >> rain this afternoon started to pull things off. we needed the moisture after five unusually dry weeks. >> kelly werthmann is live in denver. the weather has been interesting the last few weeks. >> reporter: today was no exception, karen. we saw everything including some snow earlier today. this was the scene at broncos headquarters. looks more like a blizzard out there. the truth of the matter is this really is not that abnormal for an el nino cycle which is what we are in right now but what is out of the ordinary is this dry spell we seem to be under, that's what is causing some concern. >> we had such a long stretch

are in the spring mode. it is too early to be in spring mode. it may change next weekend we go back to winter. >> reporter: march is a critical month for moisture in colorado. despite a little rain monday, march seems to be followed where in february, staying warm and dry. if history repeats itself the weather pattern could be concerning. >> last year we tried out a little bit in february march and then it turned on like a faucet and we were flooding and floating away in april and early may. this has a feel similar to 2012, were february dried out, march dried out, and we stayed dry through the summer and ended up burning up with massive wildfires. >> reporter: good news is the snowpack statewide is at 99% thanks to a wet fall in long- range projections show above normal level moisture. it is a matter of when. >> we are seven days into march and have yet to get significant snow up there. time is ticking.

know it we will be moving into april. is it going to materialize? that is the magic question. >> reporter: chris also says that a couple of big snowstorms could get us right back on track for the moisture that we need but he also says that it would be nice if we could spread that out over the next 90 days. but chris is thinking, unfortunately, that's not the case this year. live in denver, kelly werthmann, cbs4 news. a developing story, police investigating the death of a three-month-old boy in liquid. the child died in hospital yesterday. four days ago officers found an injured baby in a townhome at 16th avenue and aims near sheridan boulevard. cbs4's melissa garcia is their life. at this point are they calling this a case of child abuse? >> reporter: jim, police have not come out and said that, only that this is unexplained injuries, or that the child's injuries, rather, our unexplained. neighbors said that officers

morning guarding the entrances to the neighborhood. crime scene tape surrounds a backyard in the gated community where neighbors are shocked by the unexplained death of a three-month-old baby inside this liquid home. it's very shocking. this is such a quiet neighborhood. >> i would not expect something like this to happen. >> reporter: officers now responded to a 911 call about a child having difficulty breathing. on the scene, police found a baby girl unresponsive and rushed her to a hospital where authorities say she received unexplained injuries. she died four days later. police are releasing few details but say the child and only two people inside the townhome prior to the 911 call. neighbors say the baby and her parents have been staying here father's parents. while detectives are investigating the infant's death, no arrests have been made.

the people who live in that home have been staying fatal injuries. we're live in lakewood, melissa investigators say kids playing with a lighter might have started a fire at this apartment in lakewood today. at least one unit is heavily damaged but no one was hurt. fire crews say an adult was home with the kids but stepped outside to empty a mop bucket. happening now, the search for a hit and run driver after this crash on colfax. we're live in madison now with details. >> reporter: you can see traffic is moving again here on colfax after being shut down for several hours. police responded to this area between madison and monroe earlier to investigate a crash. when they got here, they found two vehicles badly damaged in the westbound lanes. investigators now believe a third vehicle may have been involved, and that the driver

tom mustin has been talking to store owners since the first rush of crimes. some businesses have found a solution, but you found others are still being hit. >> reporter: the hits keep on coming along south broadway. i'm at the spring's automotive group where the owner says he was standing a few days ago talking to a person he thought was a customer. the customer jumped into a car and drove off down broadway almost hitting the owner. the latest rash of crime on south broadway, both business answers. >> i got a weird feeling. >> reporter: david's describing the present car theft at his dealership nine days ago. one of a number of crimes along a two-mile stretch of broadway in englewood. >> i turned around, he slammed the door and jumped into the car, drove off. >> reporter: he owns a spring's automotive. a man asked to see a chevy. then put the keys in the ignition. as he walked up to the

gunned the engine and drove away. last year, dozens of burglaries were reported in the same area. >> we were here six times. >> reporter: surveillance videos caught this crook stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise from the community service apparel store. store owner, brining in cappel, beefed up security cameras and embraced the windows on the shop. police don't have any leads or hard numbers from the recent crime surge but their website showed dozens of commercial burglaries, robberies and theft in the last 30 days. in many cases, the power was cut to the business before committing the crime. >> police are telling us that they are testing the systems to >> reporter: meanwhile, this business owner has a message for the elusive bandits. do something productive with your life. more security businesses have in terms of lights and cameras the same for the business is. meanwhile the suspect in this case is described as a heavyset hispanic man with tattoos on his body.

when the snowmobilers finally emerged from the backcountry. >> reporter: after a long, cold night lost in colorado's backcountry, four grateful snowmobilers are reunited with friends and family. >> we've got heavy valleys. i went up over the next ridge, that was a good ride. >> got to thicken entries and dark, i got stuck. >> reporter: search and rescue crews fear the worst. the group was snowmobiling in an area known for deadly avalanches. several search teams land the command post in rural grand county not knowing what they would find. using cell phone gaming technology and aided by good old-fashioned luck, search crews found the men before 10:00 this morning. >> there were all four together. we knew if they were together they would be okay. >> reporter: searchers say the group was prepared with a survival kit allowing them to build a fire and emergency shelter to hunker down after becoming lost in the dark and snow.

>> reporter: a good reminder that conditions can change in an instant and snowmobilers will tell you people. is the difference between life and death. matt kroschel, cbs4 news. new video of a garbage truck crashing off of a ramp from the driver's point of view. this truck was driving in miami presidents' day, hit a guardrail, overcorrected and plunged off the side of the highway. it crashed onto a road 100 feet below. amazingly the driver survival was seriously hurt. a video that has people talking and gawking, a standoff involving a dancing naked woman. the woman was showing off her moves on top of a big rig stopped in the middle of a highway in houston, texas. she stayed up there for two hours until fire crews and police officers were able to very carefully cuff and remove her. she had apparently been

climbing up on the truck. seasons today. >> snow, rain, hail out east, got crazy. 7:00 a.m. here, temperature in the 50s. we put this in motion, you see foothills. now you see the front pushing moisture into denver. look at the shower storms and thunderstorms with lightning. thunderstorms, snow, rain, sunshine and mild temperatures. the low pressure system continued to spike moving into rapid city and moving from dallas. in oklahoma, a good line of showers and thunderstorms as well. taking a look at the big pressure, there is that low pressure system, counterclockwise flow. we still have some of that wrap around. northeast colorado still seeing a few showers. here is the cool air behind the frontal system. as it pushes through, we have a couple of lows behind it so we could still see scattered snow in the mountains. here's the hour by hour

>> reporter: at jim got the voicemail. >> enforcement action with the u.s. treasury. >> reporter: linda caught it twice. >> my number is 619-924 -- >> reporter: art got the voicemail and called back. >> i was really surprised to got a voice that answered, "department of the treasury." >> reporter: they were not the only ones. >> my daughter-in-law, heidi, procedures two of the calls. >> reporter: the irs scam is everywhere. these accusing you of owing back taxes and threaten arrest if you don't pay up immediately. >> the thing that surprised me is that they did leave a voice message and a number to call back. >> reporter: the scam is evolving to use internet phone services and robo calls. >> help us to help you. >> reporter: scammers can put out thousands of calls and only need a few people to take the bait.

the inspector general for tax investigation investigates the irs scam and says 100 people from colorado reported losing more than $600,000 since 2013. timothy stone is a special agent with the fbi which sometimes assist in the investigation of the scams. >> is it easy to track down these guys? >> it is extraordinarily difficult. >> reporter: the scammers are across state lines or overseas using disposable phones and technology to mask their real phone numbers. >> it will look like a legitimate number coming in from a known irs or banking official. >> reporter: we tried calling the phone numbers left on the voicemails. >> the number you have dialed has been changed, disconnected or is no longer in service. >> reporter: even these numbers don't always lead to the crooks. >> the numbers can be forwarded

"i sure want you to win a trophy." i do too. that's what we're trying to do. then she asked, "daddy, is this the last game ever?" that's when i shook my head in amazement and profit out of chester had gotten into my 5- year-old daughter. after the recap of the game with my dad, i was checking to see if the giants one, and calling eli who are both on the team buses. i will miss the handshake with tom brady and i will miss the plane rides after a big win with 53 teammates extending in the aisles laughing and celebrating during the whole fight.
