the person who was stabbed is in the hospital with life threatening injuries. two people are in critical condition following a fair at a denver motel. the most serious damage is to the second floor of that building. a lot of damage. happened at the bar x motel on west colfax near sheridan. lauren, sounds like a lot of people were forced out because of this fire. >> reporter: they were, jim. and we know that investigators out here today looking into the cause of this fire found several fire code violations, pointing to a lack of upkeep here. those two people that were injured were found inside units that are on the second floor where the worst damage is and where crews right now are boarding up. >> it was like a gulf of flames. it's kind of hard to say, but there was a lot of flames coming out of the building.

hurt at the bar x motel on west colfax after a fire spread through its second-floor unit. it the owner says he grabbed the fire extinguisher. >> frightening. a lot was going through my head. the first thing that went through my head was try to put the fire out, and i tried, but it just wouldn't go out. >> reporter: the fire started around 9:30 in the morning and took crews more than an hour to put out. >> somebody was yelling, hey, what's inside? >> reporter: fire crews rescued a man and woman who had burn injuries. they were listed in critical condition at the hospital. flames and smoke caused extensive damage where owners told firefighters tenants were staying short term. >> nothing i have experienced before. i've never been through this before. >> reporter: now, we know the red cross is helping at least three people who have been

we also know the cause of this fire remains under investigation tonight. live in denver, lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. right now an update on 150 workers fired at the cargill meat packing plant in fort morgan. they have now filed federal complaints of discrimination. we told you the muslim employees were fired after they skipped work for three days as a protest. they say cargill would fought let them take their breaks together so that they could pray together. cargill says it does allow for prayer breaks, but allowing that many people to take a have hurt productivity. after the firings the company did change its policy so that those employees were allowed to days. i-70 is back open in eight-hour closure. crews are still working to slides.

>> my number is 619-924. >> reporter: art got the voice mail and called back. >> really surprised to find a of the treasury. >> reporter: they are not the only ones. >> my daughter-in-law heidi of those cause. >> reporter: the irs scam is everywhere. thieves accuse you of owing back taxes and threaten arrest if you don't pay up immediately. >> the thing that surprised me was that they did leave a voice message and number to call back. >> reporter: the scam is evolving to use internet phone services and robocalls. >> i want you to cooperate with us and help us to help you. >> reporter: the scammers can put out thousands of calls and only need a few people to take the bait. colorado is 13th in the nation for calling victim to this. the inspector general

coloradoans reported losing more than $600,000 since 2013. >> it actually works. >> reporter: timothy stone is a special agent with the fbi which sometimes assists in the investigation of these scams. >> reporter: is it easy to track down these guys? >> it's actually extraordinarily difficult. >> reporter: the scammers are often across state lanes or overseas. they're using disposable phones, and technology can mask their real phone numbers. >> it will look like it's a legitimate number from a known irs or banking official. >> reporter: we tried calling the phone numbers left on the voice mails. >> the number you dialed has been changed, disconnected, or is no longer in service. >> reporter: but even these numbers don't always lead to the crooks. >> remember, those numbers can then be forwarded on to a secondary and tertiary numbers as well that make it even more difficult. >> reporter: while there have been arrests and convictions in the irs scam investigators say education is the best way to

thunderstorms to the east. very heavy storms in central texas. you can see from louisiana all the way up into missouri we have some very heavy rains going on. we had tornado warnings and watches earlier. now we've got flood warnings and watches and advisories out. they could get five to seven inches in just the next two days with this slow moving storm system. back to our area you can see how that snow is just to the west of us. that's really where it is going to be the heaviest. it stretches from the metro all the way back into the mountains. it doesn't last very long. hour. we have clear, sunny skies around the area. that. you can see the metro area just showers. it may take awhile before they hit the ground. we have snow behind that in portions of jefferson county. could be rain mixed with snow. i think we will see mostly

has a big lead over bernie sanders in mississippi and michigan. she met with voters in detroit before leaving for ohio tonight. ohio, of course, voting next tuesday. the fact she's already there just indicative of how important that state is. jim and karen, 150 delegates up for grabs roughly for the republicans, and more than 160 for the democrats tonight. >> craig, thanks very much. a commuter train carrying more than 200 passengers derails innorthern california. >> nine people are hurt. officials say a mudslide caused by the area's recent storms is to blame. we're covering the nation on denver's only 6:30 newscast. all rail service was suspended so crews could remove the damaged train, clear that area up. train tracks. officials say it wasn't speeding before the accident. it was going 35 miles per hour in a 40 miles per hour zone. one of the train's cars did slide right through the mud in a swollen creek before resting on its side.
