a favorite show makes production changes while the loyal fan base can be disappointed. >> is that the case with ? ? [ music ] ? ? >> reporter: can phantom of the opera be made leaner and is meaner? the answer is yes. ? ? [ music ] ? ? >> reporter: i enjoyed the spectacular new version of phantom. it's not all that different from the original.
6:37 pm
>> after 25 years, this new production was conceived of, after 25 years giving a creative team an opportunity to come this with a new perspective and new ideas on material that had been established in one set way. ? ? [ music ] ? ? >> reporter: here's what i thought they had changed. the sets have been brought in and are more focused on the action. the face of the show slightly faster but i never noticed anything missing. the bit with the chandelier is different and in many way, it's better. the one true change that some might notice is that the staircase is gone from the number, masquerade. but the phantom is part of the action of that number from the very beginning, which is a chilling thought, once you consider it. but is there a chance that even with a few cosmetic changes like this, those who love the original production will be disappointed?
6:38 pm
question is absolutely. you run the risk ever disappointing people who have been longtime fans of a production. and i think the genius with this show, the touring production now which is the new conception as well as the original, there's a lot of face spacein the story for an audience to project upon. and audiences fill in the gaps, whether it's visually or narratively. they fill in the gaps. and they come up with the story essentially that they want to them. >> reporter: still what they'll see is a show determined to be everything the audience hopes for. ? [ music ] ? ? >> the spectacular new production of the phantom of the opera opens august 25th at the denver center downtown.
