roll through the morning hours but getting busy later. take a look at i-270 and it's paused. it is a slow go this morning. back to school and back to traffic i like that one. breaking news outside of washington d.c. now a building went up in flames in a suburb outside of maryland. investigators believe natural gas fed the flames and caused the explosion. crews say 5-7 people are still unaccounted for this morning. video from above shows the destruction. take a look and part of the apartment has collapsed here. building debris is scattered throughout a nearby parking lot and right now people are still

train to the plane is back up and running this morning. a damaged cable cut power to the tracks on the a-line yesterday forcing passengers to top off and take a bus. this defeats the purpose. jamie leary is live this morning at union station. there were so many unhappy people. how are things going this morning? >> things are running smoothly this morning. the first train left at 3:15 right on time. yesterday some people missed fls hours on the train. one passenger here rsh are you from denver? >> no, i'm from vermont. >> reporter: but you heard about the issues? >> yes, that was concerning but we heard on the news this morning everything is running smoothly so i hope that's right. >> reporter: tell me, you decided to take it knowing there could be some risks. tell me why. >> it's just the most convenient, quickest and less expensive way to go.

tracking showers this morning very light in some cases this may not be reaching the ground but they are out there on radar from the trinidad area and ra ton pass out towards kim, springfield and lamar. they will soon be exiting it oklahoma and north eastern new mexico. our weather watcher has 62 degrees. good morning, and good to see you. most of the metro area in the 60s. westminster 57 and afternoon today, tracking a cool front coming out of wyoming threatening to kick up strong to severe thunderstorms. we'll take a look at that coming up. our first look from copter4 this morning. this is a little out of focus like most of us this time of the morning. i-70 and colorado you can see nice light volumes. that's not the case southbound coming into towns.

i-76 and eastbound along i-270. that is very slow westbound along 76 i know is typical this time of day. southbound along i-225. you're not going to have to avoid glenwood canyon. they finished the work early yesterday. yesterday there was a four hour long detour. at least it was seenic. new this morning, canada's nati a bomb threat on their own turf. aaron driver was killed during a police operation. he was from winnipeg and under a court order from earlier this year to not associate with isis. police say he supported the group on social media. another family is mourning the loss of a colorado civilian killed fighting isis.

22-year old from castle rock. jordan said in an interview one time that city life was just too mundane for him and he hated it so he found something he was passionate about and went to the middle east to fight isis. he was on his second trip to the middle east to fight. originally he went in 2015 and flew into iraq and joined up with the group called the people's protective unit. he ended up making his battle. he came back in the fall but only for a few months. earlier in 2016 he went back into syria to rejoin the wpg and fight isis. he was in a town in northern syria near the turkish border. y pshgpg is a group fighting

football is back tonight. a live look from chicago as the broncos get ready for the first pre-season game of the season. it's happening there in chicago. the boys take on the bears tonight at 6:00. we expect to see a lot of young guys get playing time. the coach says the game is really about the 2's and 3's. one of the guys to keep an eye on booker and hillman. they are listed as the number two running back. impressive camp. >> today really doing some good stuff. he's right there and we know he's pushing our veteran players. the thing that's impressive is how well he has done. >> he doesn't want to just be in the right position but really be in the right spot and catch that ball and go.

yager has 66 in burlington. low pressure ridge in the upper atmosphere will be grazing by colorado over the next 24 hours and will help drag a cold front at the surface currently up in wyoming and down into the state and also watching iowa and illinois today. stronger and severe storms unfortunately in chicago's forecast tonight and that's the big game. here back closer to home, a couple showers and storm popping in the early afternoon as we go early evening on the north eastern plains. i don't think we'll have a big outbreak but the chance is there. some storms have gusty wind and hail and brief heavy rain. that area that could see a strong severe storm is to the north and east of denver. fort collins right on the edge. topping off in the 80s to near 90s today.

the person lives but doctors have treated 13 people this summer from the disease spread by mosquitos. the cases are out of boulder and adams and larimer county. we're learning more about the shooting death of a florida woman during a police academy training exercise. bullets hit the 73-year old in a tragic accident. it happened during scenario. the exercise was only supposed to include blanks but somehow it included live rounds. >> we want him to know that we know he didn't intend on this happening and i forgive him. >> officer cole is on administrative leave during the investigation.

quarterback battle, the coach reminds us the first pre-season game is more about the back ups. sanchez is playing the starters against chicago and the trevor siemian in the second quarter and lynch the rest of the game. whether they're battling for a roster spot or something big e it's a big deal for the rookies. >> i'm definitely thinking about that. i think before every game you because you love the game so much and you love playing it. >> i'm nervous. it's your first nfl game and you never know what will happen. i know the guys can help me through the situation so i'm gracious for the opportunity. rockies lost to the rangers

southbound along i-225 past 104th blocking off a lane of traffic. look at the slowing from the 50s and 60s and down into the 20s. that's having a drag on drive time. the average speed through the stretch is 48 miles per hour. right now a-line riders are hoping for a problem free day. some missed flights yesterday because of another issue that had them actually getting off the train and on to a bus. jamie leary is live for union station and jamie, unfortunately you have reported a lot on these problems. we are up to at least ten now. >> i was just talking about that. we have been here for every incident keeping an eye on things. this makes the 12th incident disruption to service yesterday. that seems to be the trend when storms roll in. issues arise with the a-line and today so far so good. the trains have been departing

have time to swerve. more illegal pot busts in pueblo county. sheriff deputies seized 160 marijuana plants and thousands of dollars in grow equipment yesterday. deputies arrested two people at two different homes in aavon dale. they are facing charges of possession and cultivation of marijuana. mon toy ya admitted he was growing pot under marijuana license. deputies reviewed the paperwork and found the application was denied last month. new video serves as a warning to people camping in salida. look at your screen -- mountain sports posted this to facebook and it shows a group of mountain lions rooming the woods on methodist mountain. -- -- roaming. three of the big cats are slowly

a big cool down and storms to talk about. >> yes, sunrise happening after 6:00. a beautiful view there thanks to cloud cover passing over the state. comfortable and these temperatures very nice this morning. 50s and 60s statewide. 48 in gunnison and telluride. 49 also up in craig. a little pressure has a big trough extending from it and it's going to grease by colorado. that's in the upper part of the atmosphere. t together and the cold front will come right down into colorado over the next 12-24 hours. futurecast for today starts off with a mix of sun and clouds and showers popping over the mountains and early afternoon as we go into the mid to late afternoon. we get on the north eastern plains and a few could become strng to severe. the potential is there for heavy

20s and 30s turning right here shortly. 11 minutes on the drive and the nice thing it's been moved to the right shoulder so it's going to cause fewer delays. eastbound along i-270 is running slow as well. here's our mousetrap cam showing you i-25 and i-70 this morning and look at the slowing in the eastbound direction of i-70 as you get over i-25 out to the elevated portion of the highway running slow. an accident in lakew watch out for that. running heavy as well this morning. the c-470 express toll lanes project is underway. c-dot breaking grounds yesterday. the project adds two express toll lanes from i-25 to wadsworth in douglas and jefferson counties. a neighborhood collision filed an injunction. they say the environmental impact study underestimated the

>> it's the noise pollution and you will see a lot more traffic when they doubled the road and more congestion. >> they hope the traffic will be moving along. c-dot says the road expansion is necessary to keep up with the growing population. august 22nd is the official closing incline. during the second face of an improvement project crews say 2,000 hikers use it on a summer weekend day. they are looking to improve the trail. a second top golf location could be coming to the metro area but some are not happy about the idea. there are plans to build near 136th avenue and i-25. neighbors worry about the noise, lights and traffic.

you're waking up to cbs4 morning news. we're in downtown denver watching the flags flap a bit here. the camera at sports authority field has some cloud cover out there. makes a weather manner vus to see this much cloud cover early in the morning. it makes me think, will we reach our daytime high? places like arvada and wheat ridge reaching highs in rise into the 80s and some places near 90. we will be tracking a handful of thunderstorms coming up. we'll give you the best outlook for that. take a look from our c-dot camera. this is southbound along i-25. off to the right shoulder there's a three car accident. copter4 heading to another accident that is reportedly involving three parked cars as well as a moving car.

shouldn't be an issue today. c-dot cancelling plans because they finished work early yesterday. it caused a lot of delays for people yesterday. a four hour scenic tour. this is news breaking outside of washington d.c.. a terrible fire here and at least 30 people are hurt and up to seven are still missing this morning. it was a massive apartment building fire and that's w morning. it happened in silver spring, maryland. they felt an explosion about a mile away before the 911 call came in. they used ladder trucks to bring people to safety but some were rescued before first responders ever arrived. >> i was sleeping and i heard a boom and my mom said wake up because there's a fire. the whole apartment shook. it was like a big fire and flames coming out of the roof and stuff.

the people unaccounted for. investigators believe natural gas fed the flames and may have caused that explosion. today a judge will evaluate the mental state of the colorado springs planned parenthood shooter. judge gilbert martinez will review whether his mental health has improved to where he can stand trial. the shooter is not expected to appear in court today. he opened fire on people at the planned parenthood clinic the day after year. three people died and he's at colorado state mental institution in pueblo. right now rtd a-line is on track but that was not the case yesterday. a damaged cable cut power to the tracks forcing people to miss their flights. jamie leary is live this morning at union station and it's been a bumpy ride. >> reporter: not the case this

that's been the trend all morning. yesterday's power outage caused people to be stuck on the train for two hours. take a look at this picture. it was taken by state representative angela williams yesterday. it appears to be a broken piece of equipment on the train. we spoke with a family on the stranded train who described loud noises when the outage happened. this piece connected the train to the electric cables. it happened early afternoon and service wasn't restored until 9:30 last night. we have been talking to passengers all morning and many of them say despite the issues the a-line is too convenient not to utilize. >> i live in colorado springs. this is the cheaper option than having to park at the airport. even with the disruptions it's new and going to have a few bugs, i'm okay with it.

opened on april 22nd, it's experienced more than a dozen disruptions but this morning, so far so good. live from union station, jamie leary, cbs4 news. new this morning, canadian police killed a man they say was plotting a suicide bombing in a public place. officers thwarted the plan last night when they killed aaron driver in southern ontario. he was from winnipeg and under a court order earlier this year police say he supported the group on social media. a developing story involving another colorado man killed in the fight against isis. 22-year old jordan from castle rock is believed to have been killed last week in syria. in january he went to the middle east for his second trip to help the people's protection unit. this is a group of soldiers fighting isis known as ypg.

comments he made about the orlando nightclub shooting. republican garl glenn blames president obama for the shooting and accuses him of directing the fbi not to investigate the shooter. >> it sounds like there's political things happening where they're given direction to look a different way. why don't we start there? >> the recording came from a forum for republican women in douglas county. he made the comments a week before winning theli a man is on solid ground this morning and in custody after scaling the trump tower in midtown manhattan. the 19-year old shimmied up the side of the 58 floor sky scraper yesterday using suction cups and a harness. he reached the 21st floor dodging police for three hours. he said he wanted to talk to trump. officers found the opportunity

to play the entire second half of the game. here's what he wants to see -- pace of the offense. of all the times he's raised his voice at players during camp, he's most often focused on this issue. he wants his quarterbacks to keep the offense moving and get in and out of the huddle smoothly and make sure everyone is at the right place at the line of scrimmage and avoid pre-snap penalties like false starts and delay of games. command of the offense. they need to finish with touchdowns instead sof field goals and most importantly, take care of the ball and avoid turnovers. here's a couple things to keep in mind. booker and hillman may be listed as code number two backs but that's not how they have lined up at practice. booker is the clear number two

awake at night wondering who the broncos punter will be, i think it's one of the most heated battles at camp. they want a punter who can pend opposing offenses deep in their territory. so it really does matter. britt? >> coach has done something interesting here. he's talking about the quarterbacks and outlined his style he wants for them but do you think any one of them style up? >> that's why the wait has been so long because what the coach has said many times is he wants one of the quarterbacks to "step up to take charge" and show that swagger that they can really lead a team. he is waiting to see who is bringing that out during the games. >> of course we don't know, don't look for veterans on the field. >> it's primarily rookies. they said anderson may take five

and the two will impact our state over the next 24 hours with slightly cooler weather and a better chance for afternoon storms. here we go in the futurecast. we'll pop those storms later this morning and early afternoon and they will roll on to the east as we go through the day. once they are on the north eastern plains they could tap into richer moisture and be stronger. we're talking about a few severe storms potentially with hail and gusty wind and may last late into the evening. if you're hoping to meteor showers, it may be too cloudy. 88 now and 80s for the most part on the eastern plains. 70s up high and 80s and 90s on the western slope. notice the cool down tomorrow into saturday. lightly better chance for storms and heating it back up as we go into the first part of next week. i want to take you out to

17th and vine. the cars get behind the tree. there's three parked cars and i'm not sure anyone wins in these scenarios but there they are revealing themselves from behind the trees. that's creating a mess for folks. they cover up the shop. unfortunately it's not our only trouble spot. this is southbound coming down into town near thornton parkway. not causing many delays. speeds from dipping down into the 40s. we have trouble along i-76 not causing delays from highway 85 as you get closer to town on the approach to brighton boulevard. we have an accident at 17th and vine and florida and pierce watch out for that. typical slowing on southbound i-225 and in the direction of c-470. soon you will have express toll lanes through there.
