good morning, everyone. i'm britt moreno. this is the news at 5:00 this morning. happening right now on the cbs4 news. >>reporter: a shooting and high speed chase. we have the latest on what happened coming up on cbs4 morning news. >> thanks, jaime. there's outrage over the former of a cu student in a rape case. why he will not serve jail time. and the broncos are back in action. how the team's defense is picking up from where it left off as championships from last season. this is the news breaking out of fort collins this morning. there's an amber alert

5-year old little girl. a warrant is out for the girl's mother. take a look at your screen. police want to find 5-year old anna lee keller. she has long blonde hair and green eyes. she was seen wearing a glittery shirt. her mother is montgomery. she drove off when police tried to approach her last night. she began driving recklessly with anna lee in the vehicle. police want to find them. they were seen in a 2000 ford f-150 truck with license plate 546984 p. northbound i-25 is closed north of highway 52. police chased a car there. it ended where jaime leary is live near the town of frederick. good morning, jaime. >>reporter: good morning, britt. this was quite the large scene

you can see colorado state patrol and a semi truck that actually got stuck on -- stop sticks were deployed to end this high speed chase. it started in denver and landed north of colorado 52. a small checks -- a small section closed off. an uber iv shooting at him. he called police and he followed the suspect car all the way down i 225 just north of colorado 52. he said as he followed them, they reached speeds up to 130 miles-an-hour and flowing things out of the window to try and stop that uber driver from following them. he couldn't keep up. csp stepped in and deployed the stop sticks.

custody at this point in time. the police actually just took off with the victims to continue that investigation. they haven't identified what kind of a gun it is at this point in time, but they're working to get that information. denver police is handling the investigation, even though this was a multi-agency effort. it started in denver and landed here some time later, so a lot of people stepped in to help out. and two suspects in custody. fortunately nobody was this incident luckily. we're going to follow this story. live in frederick, jaime leary, cbs4 morning news. >> thank you for that. there's outrage over the sentence for a former cu student who apparently raped another student. he will not serve prison time. lauren dispirito explains. >>reporter: prosecutors wanted a prison sentence.

he told her friends he would take care of her. >> this defendant earned a sentence to the department of correction. >> the judge sentenced him to 20 years of probation. >> we don't want to ruin his life, it was a one-time thing, and we're forgetting this wasn't something that happened to the perpetrator. this was something they chose to do. >> victim's advocate franklin says too often judges take into future rather than the victim's. earlier this year, stanford university student turner was convicted of rape, but -- he a void prison time. >> we have seen in other instances where it's a person of color and they're not in college and they're not worthy of that mercy. >> prosecutors thanked the victim for being brave enough to

36 degrees. >> you may need the heater. >> this is i-70 and brighton boulevard. we had construction near washington. it has picked up and moved out of the way. there's slowing in i-25. c-470 slowing in the of 285 so they can continue paving. the broncos get a good start gives a solid performance, but the question remains, who will start at quarterback once we get into the regular season. here's our broncos insider, michael spencer. >> the broncos entered the season in chicago and they left chicago with a quarterback competition. none of the three guys competing for the quarterback job really stood out above the crowd. sanchez got the first crack. he led the offense down the field and

possession, but through an interception his second possession. lynch got to play the entire second half. all three guys said afterwards, we did good things, but there's things we need to do and it's clear this quarterback competition is far from settled. >> as a group, it was a good step. they've been pretty solid, so we have to keep moving forward. >> it's important to score on the first drive and not just the field goal, but to g and to stay in there on third down and take a hit, i think it was [indiscernible] so it's nice to pop up from a hit like that, and they never feel good, but they feel better when you end up with the ball. >> i felt comfortable with the game plan and the way we put the game plays together and the plays they called when i was out there. they were simple to run and something i was good at, so i felt comfortable. >> kind of do what i've been doing. stay within myself and

we're on a good team, you know, whoever is pulling the trigger back there. >> the broncos will practice on saturday and have sunday off and return to the field on monday for the final day of training camp. they'll host the 49ers saturday for game number two. i have a feeling we'll know more about the quarterback position after that game. i'm michael spencers, cbs sports. >> they have to make a decn head coach. in a statement, roy said his vision didn't match that of the organization. he said he wasn't giving adequate -- the avs won the division in roy's first season. they - a new star wars movie is coming. we'll show you more of the preview of rogue one.

rusty, our weather watcher in fort morgan got 57. he says he's hoping for rain today. rusty, there's always hope, but don't get too excited. we have dryer air working into the atmosphere. that's what the orange shades on the water vapor indicates. dryer air in the atmosphere. we'll crop up those storms in the afternoon, but the coverage is less wide spread. there's the ones down there on their way out. expect sunny skies through your morning and into the on future cast, 3:00 in the , you'll see sprinkling of showers. the best chance really is from denver to the south on that i 25 corridor. down here in the southeast, there's a chance, a few storms could try and get rowdy. we're outlooked for a very marginal risk, that one or two storms could get strong or severe. cooler today.

our son caleb was born with a rare form of cystic fibrosis. it means every day mucus builds up on his lungs, making it very hard for caleb to breathe. was about 35 years of age. but then a new medication was invented that not only treated the symptoms of cystic fibrosis, but targeted the disease. the only problem was is that it wasn't approved to be used in the united states. but michael bennet changed that. working with republicans, michael bennet wrote a law to get medicine and treatments approved quicker. caleb just celebrated 5 years being hospital-free.

four people are dead after a series of bombing. coming up, the warning for american travelers overseas. the broncos quarterback competition was a boxing match, we would have to go to gary kubiak's card. pre-season game number one against the bears, sanchez went first. great drive and passed to thomas. sanchez, 10 and 13. interception. trevor played the second quarter. 7 for 12. 88 yards and a couple of short field goals. lynch had the whole second half completed six of seven passes. 74 yards. no touchdowns and no interceptis and moved the ball ballet bit -- moved the

to him and started shooting at him in denver. so that sent police on a chase. the uber driver followed that driver. it ended in weld county. jaime leary is where it ended at i-25 and mineral road. this is a wild story. tell us what happened. >>reporter: yeah, there was a huge scene here earlier which is north of colorado 52. you can see a semi-. there's no longer blockage on that stem -- the semi pulled over. the semi truck drove over the stop sticks and you can see the semi tires are blown out as well. the suspect's vehicle was being towed just as we arrived on scene this morning. you can see the silver car. that's the suspect's vehicle. its tires blown out as well.

identified said he feared for his life. he was in downtown denver when two men started shooting at him for no reason at all. the bullets shattered his windows. he called police and tried to follow the car, but they were throwing on objects out of the window to try and stop them. once the suspect hit -- police were involved. highway thornton police were involved and highway patrol was able to deploy stop sticks which is what led that car to stop in its tracks. they were able to make two arrests. and the uber driver caught up to the scene, so they were able to interview the uber driver. nobody was hurt in this police. police have yet to identify what kind of gun was used and why these two people started
