hi, everybody. this is the news on cbs4, tuesday august 16th. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. thanks for joining us. let's find out about the forecast for today. dave aguilera is in-house. >> good morning, everybody. we have a nice tuesday. not a cloud in the mix today. as we start off cooler, 58 in golden. 59 in greenwood village and i love mitch and sandy granger who are up early, early with a number of 57 in arvada. our weather watchers. here's the satellite and radar. we had a couple of clouds and showers move across eastern colorado last night. partly cloudy to start the day.

western colorado and that's more than yesterday for showers and thunderstorms to fire up this afternoon. here's the break down for your day ahead. 73 at 9:00 a.m. and partly cloudy and the high today 88 degrees with afternoon thunderstorms popping up. got about a 20% chance today. a little higher than yesterday. still expecting a cool change at the end of the week, we'll talk about that, but time to gets your first traffic check of the morning. good morning, joel here's one of those spots. underneath the bridge from our cbs4 tech center cam, you have i-225 near bellevue in the northbound direction, you're down to one lane passed yale and they're doing paving work. we're across the denver-metro area, we have an accident as you travel along i-70 at federal. that's going to slow things down. we've been looking on the cameras for it effect specifically and haven't been able to find it. hopefully

attack onboard a train in europe. police say the attack took place in a passenger train in western australia. the man rested is a 60-year old german national who police say to be mentally confused. a 19-year old man suffered injuries to the stomach and back. a 17 has a throat injury and both in the hospital. there's no indication that any of this is terror-related and no word on r a shift in the winds fires -- the basin fire burned 2,000 acres in the town of agot and the fire is moving north and east. it's burning in a ravine. and firefighter was having a hard time. denver fire is investigating

franklin and 54 and crews responded to a fire. those were evacuated by the good thing is no one was injured. this morning, crews are trying to figure out the cause. families of a park deputy killed in february serving -- they're suing the department. they're seeking $1 million and martin is seeking he's dan bush. >>reporter: deputies should never have gone inside the home that martin worth refused to live. he killed 35-year old nate kerrigan when he entered the home. kerrigan's parents spoke with investigator brian maass. >> i trusted our sheriff for many years. i know nathan was loyal to the man. but he let us

worth, a previous -- park county sheriff ordered deputies to go inside despite the threats. >> the man promised to kill the deputies that came through the door. they had -- they bring aware of this. >> when the man went back into the house, why didn't they back off and wait. he wasn't going anywhere. why couldn't it wait? >> the sheriff fred told repo h team because he didn't think it was necessary and didn't expect worth to become violent. the wrongful death suit claims that the department failed to properly train and supervise its deputies and the sheriff office did not adhere to -- or a high risk eviction. >> dan rush reporting there. deputy martin had multiple gun wupds to his lower extremities and the filing indicates he suffers from post traumatic

crews are working to repair thousands of dollars of damage to a school. police are looking for the student they believe who did it. shawn chitnis is live. shawn, this is where there's a lot of damage to that school. >>reporter: yeah, britt. a lot of damage so close to the start of this school year a week away, and so that's why staff are now rushing to get the by monday. that damage with more than a dozen doors damaged by teenagers and the damages around $10,000. neighbors heard someone breaking glass and banging noises early that day. they called deputies saying they saw two people on the south side of the building wearing black. the jefferson county sheriff office arrived at the school at 6:00 and found two teenage boys

pointing to a lower opener. hotel hei says 20 properties in the united states may have been hacked. mal ware may have collected customer's name and credit and debit info dating as far back as 2015. hei is advising customers to report any charges to their home. the company filed editing water. apple -- apple's expected to release its next iphone in september. and there may be winners, but the olympic winners can't beat uncle sam. they get cashed $10,000 for bronze and those winnings are considering winnings to the ers and subject to tax. >> what a killjoy you are.

the nasal spray after some found it to not be effective. it comes from a random trial involving 1200 children. a new report finds full time college students drink more but smoke far less than other people their age. the federal report also says full time college kids are more likely engage in binge drinking. marijuana use was nearly identical among the two groups. and the american heart association is calling on people researchers say u.s. adults are sanitary for 6 to 8 hours a day, and that type of behavior may be associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiac disease. the association aim that those aim for 30 minutes of physical activity per day. those living in parts of indiana are going to be cleaning

up from this. a tornado touched down before 6:00 p.m. and left behind downed trees and the twister rolled over that area. several homes now, buildings are damaged. there are fortunately no reports of injuries because dave aguilera, folks can get worried about this when it's taking cover. there's somebody having a good look with the camera, i think, down there. look at the trees. >> oh, my gosh. alerts are getting better than they used to be. we have a long way but a lot of people get more advanced warning than we did a few years ago. that's great. around here, we've been lucky this august. you know, we've had a couple of hail storms but nothing like what's happening in the rest of the country with flooding and tornado and fire danger. and our danger is still high. we had a couple of brush fires pop up yesterday. we need some rain, and maybe it's coming. 59 in boulder.

breckenridge at 38. we have moderate air quality. it's a non alert day, so air quality not too shabby. we had a few showers over eastern colorado leaving behind a few clouds. partly cloudy across the eastern plains. more moisture working its way in the southwest. there's rain outside of telluride and south of grand junction. that will be moisture that waggles in here. we have a high pressure ridge over the southwest. moisture coming in. we'll have showers and thunderss today the way things are looking and that shows up in the forecast. we start off cloudy and the storms build in the mountains and pull over the eastern plains. a couple of storms could be big along the palmer divide pushing along lineman in the early part of the evening. after the sun goes down, we lose a lot of heating and we lose a lot of the convection. 80s and 90s across the eastern plains. denver, greeley, fort collins and the northeast cooler than yesterday.

yesterday. 88 today. same thing tomorrow with isolatd afternoon thunderstorms. and then cooler with a cold front coming through late in the day on thursday. 83 for the high on thursday. scattered thunderstorms and a better chance of rain as we head into friday and saturday and by friday and saturday, joel, the 70s might return to town. so a little cool down still expected. >> that looks like a great weekend. cbs4 mouse trap cam. it's pointed off to the west so you can see the accident at i-70 along there blocking off the left portion of the highway. watch out for that. if we have volume, it would cause delays, but cars able to get by that. slowing along c-470 to the north of king carol out to 285 as they continue to do some paving operations through there. and we've been watching underneath the bridge here, you can see the lights take off. to get over into the left lane, you're down to one lane getting passed yale.
