good morning, everyone. i'm britt moreno. >> i'm alan gionet. this is the news on cbs4. shawn is live this morning. shawn. >>reporter: a car crashes into a pole, fence, trailer and garage. while have a live report coming from the scene. crews in california are hoping to try and get some control of a fire burning through homes in san bernardino county. ahead, the latest on the bluecut fire. we had quite a lightning show last night.

we're looking ahead at changes you will see this week. first of all though, let's get to breaking news in denver. a couple of hours ago, a car smashed into a backyard and what a mess they had. leaving a pile of wreckage. the driver took off. >> it looks like a tornado blew through this area. it happened on the 3400-block of west evans which is west of evans and federal. shawn chitnis is there. how is the homeowner doing? >>reporter: britt, he's lucky because he all in this situation. as you mentioned, it looks like a storm came through. we should talk about weather damage, not damage that came from 1 car. let's give you a closer look at what we're talking about. this car first hit a pole. split that pole into two. then hit the fence and hit this trailer and then finally hit this detached garage and storage shed there.

the homeowner wanes side at the time. woke up suddenly and wasn't sure what happened. unclear if he heard something. but decides to go outside and see what's happening and discovers all of this damage. we're learning from that homeowner that this is not the first time this has happened. in fact, it happened too often. one of the challenges of living on this busy street and being on the edge. he's dealing with a court case involved with the last time someone hit his house or situation and a mess once again he has to clean up. as for the driver, they were able to get away, but police were able to catch up to them and take them to the hospital. we don't have an update on their condition. shawn chitnis, cbs4 news. there's a large training exercise. you'll see military helicopters and people acting as

jaime leary live at dia who has a closer look. this is to help train for major disasters, jaime. >>reporter: absolutely. this is the 5th year in a row this drill has been performed here. it's a huge test of the national disaster medical systems. more than 300 people from local, state and federal agencies will be expected to perform today. they'll be put to the test. to explain more, joining us is with the earn health care confederation. >> thanks for coming out. >> thanks for having us. tell us about this year. we have footage of last year and previous years as well, but this year is a little different, a little bigger. tell me about that. >> we're going to increase the operation tempo. we'll have ten helicopters. there, there was an

us in the upper 50s, low 60s. 54 in eerie for a cooler spot. 53 in jansey. brighton, 61 degrees. checking with our weather watchers. this is nice to see, robert peck got a third of an inch of rain from the showers that popped up at 7:00 this morning. we have a couple of sprinkles on air quality in denver continueso be poor through this afternoon, we're under an ozone alert. if you're a sensitive group, maybe someone who suffer from asthma, you may limit your time outside. mostly sunny to start. clouds build by the afternoon and temperatures getting in the 80s and this is the last days we'll be in the 80s. a big change coming up. >> thank you, chris. looking from our cbs mile high cam, we've had an accident at 6th avenue at i-25.

one does continue. we understand that some folks were taken to the hospital because of that accident. we're across the denver-metro area. we have an earlier accident that happened at knox and evans right in that area. maybe closer to federal. and so you can expect heavy media right there. not necessarily police. they have cleared the scene this morning. expect delays through there. speaking of delays, britt, how about severe delays along the that's are malfunctioning, not working properly. >> this happened too often. we can learn more from denver police on whether the suspects in officer-involved shooting ever fired at police. it happened yesterday at 4:30 in the afternoon when denver police spotted a car matching a description of one that was involved in a car jacking in arapahoe county over the weekend. it was in a parking lot of a credit union at west 12th and federal. when police approached the people in that

police. shortly after that, shots were fired. >> all of a sudden we heard this pop, pop, pop. i told the kids, somebody had to be killed. there's too many. >> i heard six or 7 shots ring out and i don't know. i came back and i seen over here that they had one dude out and they had another dude handcuffed, but the young dude is they had the ambulance come back around, pick the dude up that was on the floor. >> one of the men police chased down was wounded and taken to the hospital. the other suspects are now in custody. no dpd officers were hurt in this. 82,000 people are forced out of their home in southern california. the wild fire is moving and has zero containment so far.

with the latest from california. >>reporter: the raging flames tore through parts of san bernardino county, scorching acres of land and reducing structures to land. fire crews worked through the night to keep the blaze from destroying more homes. >> this fire is aggressive. we've seen erratic fire behavior. get out so we can focus on -- the bluecut fire ignited near pass. despite efforts to contain the fire from the air and ground, the fire expanded in size and intensity in hours. as night fell, the historic summit inn were structures that burned to the ground. here in the high desert along highway 138, you can see home after home charred to their foundations. laura anderson was driven from her home in the area yesterday, and is still unsure if it's still standing.

>> the fire caused traffic backups for miles as the area's main highway was shut down. many drivers were left sweltering in their cars in triple digit temperatures. >> we need cold water and food, and i don't know how long before we can go home. >> california has been plagued by wild fires for months. fire officials are hoping that lighter winds and cooler temperatures will help get there from california. trump is making a change at the top of his campaign. he's bringing in conservative news executives. stephen banning is campaigning and promoting kelly and conway, the campaign manager. trump said they're winner and champ and we need to win it. trump is trailing clinton in florida and virginia. paul keeps his job as chairman

criticism. trump is preparing to receive his first classified intelligence briefing. the republican nominee continue to paint himself as a law in order candidate in wisconsin yesterday calling unrest in the milwaukee area and -- democratic presidential nominee clinton says a coloradan will lead her white house transition team. salazar served from 2004 to 2009 and before that, he was a the transition team will oversee planning for a potential clinton administration if she's elected president. republican trump picks new jersey chris christie if he's elected president. the defense minister is rejecting allegations his country used a military bases -- russia launched a new wave of air strikes in syria.

in denver, kathy walsh, cbs4 morning news. time for weather and traffic every 10 minutes on the fours. and let's start with chris right now, and joel as well. let's good, joel first because we have a traffic issue. >> we're talking the a-line to dia. they're experiencing severe delays. they have crossing problems. you can take sky ride or you may have the friend to take you to the airport. avoid the a-line. we don't know when it will resume. when it does, it will be on 60-minute delays as they work the volume for those at that station. i-225, that has been cleared out of the way. you could see from our cbs4-mile high cam, we've got volume, but it's nothing that's going to delay

accident in the cleanup station near evans and knox. that's where our shawn chitnis is. it happened overnight. no police on the scene, but there's media because the pictures are crazy. you want to stick around for that. chris, we're learning that highway 105 and highway 83, that intersection near wilmore is shut down because of electronic failures. the electronic failures are going around. >> it's not weather that's a piece of good news. 50s and 60s east of i 75. 47 in lineman. 30s and 40s up high. 52 in gunnison. 67 in grand junction. berry in carter lake has 60 this morning, and orlando has 56 on the west side of littleton. a couple of showers on the western slope. this is doppler 4000. i have turned the satellite layer on. showers on the western slope and in the southwest mountains and high clouds over southern colorado.

going to keep high clouds. once we get the daytime heating, watch how fast the showers and storms pop over the higher elevations. we stay dry here in the city, but as we roll into late afternoon, early evening, just like yesterday, a few of those are going to try and come on the i-25 corridor. they won't last too long and could put down a quarter inch of rainfall. this is a big story for this week. high pressure controlling our weather. it's going to the west and building a high amplitude air. it will bring it here into the south and northern rockies. we have may temperatures more in par with early october. 90s in the southeast. 70s up high and 80s to 90s out there on the western slope. here's the 5-day forecast. after today, the cooling trend starts. we'll have afternoon storms tomorrow and it will get windy as the cold front approaches. 75 on friday.

morning showers on saturday. quite the shocker coming to us and i wouldn't be surprised if a few mpt pick up -- if the mountains pick up snow showers. neighbors were not thrilled about the mandatory practice. some called police. >> we were woken up and there was all of this really loud the kids shouldn't be out at midnight practicing. >> monday was the first day high school football teams in colorado were allowed to practice and the spartans were hoping to be the first in the state on the practice field. the district is reassuring parents and neighbors it won't

stocks are down ahead of the open this morning. we wonder how much americans are saving now that gas is hovering at 2 bucks a gallon. here's molly hall with >>reporter: the home improvement says that profits jumped 9%. the growth was led by appliance sells which saw double digit increases. wall street closed in negative territory. the dow lost 84 points and the nasdaq dropped 34. american drivers saved more than $38 billion on their gasoline bill so far this year. that's according to gasbuddy.com. they say prices

huge delays. they're calling them severe andi called it severed there. i'll change that in a moment. this is at the denver union station. if you're try to go get out to dia, they had crossing gate failures. they're trying to get that repaired. they have no estimate when that will reopen. and when it does, you'll have delays as folks were already there trying to ride the a-line or trying to make their way out to dia. you have sky ride and you have the friend. you good friend you can wake up and get you to the airport. the drive should be okay along i-70 and along pine combra boulevard. >> it's a sever in that community. coming up, a raging wild fire in southern california isn't showing signs of letting up. coming um, how much it has burned and how many people in
