it's thursday, i'm britt moreno. california's wildfires grow to more than 40 square miles. homeowner caught in a world of fire coming up. the feds are examining a local police department. what prompted the look inside the commerce city pd. meantime we are looking at a big change coming in our weather and a beautiful moon out there this morning. >> we sure do. gorgeous shot this morning and a chris spears is tracking the forecast for us. good morning, that is the full stur john moon that was full at 3:26 this morning. tracking a big change off to the north. a cold front working in from canada and it promises a much cooler work week. >> the drive from the north side of town is looking okay and both sides of 270 are nice and wide

picture coming up. wildfires burning in san bernardino, california have grown to more than 40 square miles. there's little sign of them letting up. fire crews are working around the clock to try and get a better handle on what's going on. here's the latest from right wood california. the inferno raged on for a second night in san bernardino to the ski town of right wood where flames inch closer and closer to homes. >> hopefully the guys will take care of it and be safe. >> the blue cut fire has managed to scorch thousands of acres and destroy countless homes. ron returned home to find his dogs safe and property standing. >> everything is burnt to the

hope for hour place but we were fortunate. >> despite a mandatory evacuation order, some homeowners have mixed feelings about leaving their properties. >> it's my home. would you leave your home? >> our cars are lined up and ready to go. >> kathy has warned against staying behind. >> last summer we did lose people. fire behavior changed and they refused to leave and lives were lost. >> more than2, been forced to evacuate. tom wade for cbs news, right wood, california. today the hot, dry and breezy conditions are sticking around making it tough on fire crews. people near ber then are waking up in their homes this morning after a voluntary evacuation order was lifted yesterday due to the stubborn wildfire. we talked with homeowners as the

>> reporter: a single engine air tanker attacked the fire from above as flames spread within reach of 20 homes. >> i knew folks that live up there. yeah, i'm worried for them. >> reporter: it's the second time this summer a wildfire has been close to courtney's home. >> i started gathering up important documents and stuff from her birth. 0 rfrnlts they spent hours to trying to save a house dousing a large woodpile stacked near trees dangerously close to the home. eventually the shed was lost and the burning woodpile got so intense crews had to stand back

fire from spreading. >> it's so dry and the dry conditions with the tall dry grass up here has been the biggest factor. >> 25 firefighters worked around the clock to monitor the fire overnight. attorneys for two american swimmers pulled off a plane bound for america say their clients will not be able to leave brazil until the swimmers testify about a robbery. jack conjure and gunner bens left the airport last night after being questioned by local authorities. the investigation was around ryan lochte and police want to investigate the claims the men were held up in rio on sunday. the men all have different versions of what happened and there's little evidence of an actual robbery. ryan lochte has backtracked on comment telling nbc that the gun

time now for weather and traffic every ten minutes in the fours. >> we're going to be busy and starting off with this beautiful sturgeon fish. it gets that name because the fish are biting in the great lakes where the native american indians lived and they nicknamed the moon that. lower elevations and high country in the 40s and 30s arvada. 60 in aurora and stapleton. 59 in genosee. the grangers have 60 in north west arvada. a handful of sprinkles increasing through the day. for today it's the last in a stretch of warm days.

and dropping tomorrow into the 70s and friday. good morning, i'm sure people are excited for the cooler weather. here's a look at highway 36. you can see it's looking nice and wide open but beyond that west of that in fact there's some construction heading eastbound into town before north west parkway as we take a look at maps. some slow downs on the merge from highway 36 to i-25 then as we zoom out no major or stalls but slow traffic on south eastbound 470 before king carol. >> that is going to wrap up because school is back in session for many kids. police are investigating a suspicious death in aurora. a woman's body was found and they want to determine the circumstances leading to her death. no identity has been released

stoppers. the u.s. justice department is investigating the commerce city police department. that comes after several cases of misconduct of officers in the police force. >> reporter: it was last year when it looks like a commerce city police officer had been shot by a motorist. kevin lord was convicted of making up the whole story. another officer resigned after thousands of secon messages were found on his phone. he sued after filing open record requests about other officers. now the city has taken action. >> yes, we heard from our community and they weren't happy and a few of these incidents they were embarrassed. >> at the city and departments own request, the u.s. department of justice is stepping in.

optimistic and proud. >> a department of justice program called cops will conduct a review of the department. >> we're willing to bring in some outside experts to provide some solid recommendations on what we can do to be a better organization for our community. >> richardson is now the interim chief. troy smith was moved from chief to a nonpolicing job. the fraternal order gave smith a vote of no confidence >> there were a lot of officers looking to go other places and if they had the opportunity, would talk a job somewhere else. >> this time it's the police calling for help. >> in a few months the department of justice will issue recommendations which will be made public and it will stay on for longer to see what gets implemented. a teenager from highlands

>> reporter: 13 year old adrian travels from fort morgan to children's four days a week from kidney dialysis. >> they poke me too much. i don't get to see my friends at home. >> reporter: that's been his life for 11 years. jillian understands. her kidneys stopped working when she was five years old. her first trans plant failed a year ago. she took action and found living donor. >> i feel amazing. >> reporter: her trans plant was in april and she had a 2% chance of finding a match. her miracle was an unselfish mother of four, chris si smith. >> through faith and trying to get the word out there that we can make another miracle happen. >> reporter: this time for adrian. she has a new request. adrian has a new outlook. >> reporter: does it give you

61 in the denver. 52 in salida. 49 in telluride. we're watching a few sprinkles over here. you can see a spin to these radar echoes and there's a weather disturbance in the atmosphere moving across the state. it will kick up thunderstorms as we roll through the late morning and early afternoon hours. we are anticipating much like the last few days. widespread showers and storms in the higher elevations today and a few of them may try and come across this afternoon and evening and then will turn to an approaching cold front from the north. quite a few things we're watching for you today. we should get up into the 80s. cooler today because clouds are still on the increase. 70s up in the higher elevations and a few places hanging in the 60s and 80s to near 90 on the western slope. a lot to go over here. today a few storms possible. the big change comes tonight.

cooler. 75 and we are not sure how widespread the showers are. we need to fine tune the forecast. saturday starts off cool. notice the overnight lows and upper 40s to near 50. warming trend starts sunday and by monday you'll never know the cool down happened. >> i'm sure we're going to enjoy it. that's for sure. here's a look at i-25 in both directions. your ride into downtown for right now. at that point no major accidents or stalls in the downtown area. let's take a look at the drive coming into town. speeds into the 60s and you're going to slow down to the 20s and 30s and it will take you ten minutes to get from 120th to i-70. no major problems in your way this morning. this morning it's back to school for kids and n a couple districts including jefferson

it's a special morning where parents take pictures of their kids. summer is over and cbs4's jamie leary is live from one of the bus barns in jefferson county. it's an exciting morning. >> reporter: yes, exciting morning definitely. very quiet here now. that's not the case in a couple hours. st school district superintendent is going to be here taking off at 6:00 riding the bus with students. he has an to visit middle schools and high schools and elementary schools throughout the district checking on kids and saying hello to them on an exciting first day of school. it will be busy on the streets. here's schools enrolled this year. 86,000 students. here's some tips to keep in mind. that's how many kids are headed

know they seem obvious but it's a good thing to keep at the top of your mind if you're driving to work and dropping your kids off, don't double park and don't unload children from the other side of the school. car pool to reduce the number of vehicles at school and keep in mind it's illegal to pass a school but that is stopped to load or unload children. speaking of school buses, i just talked to a couple bright and early. don't forget to thank the bus drivers who go through an aenormous amount of training. tell them thank you and nice job. they said it will be a chaotic start but very exciting.

traffic on south eastbound 470 at around kipling so be careful if you're heading through this this morning. 5:25 right now. a lot of kids going back to school today and 62 degrees in denver. hot and dry conditions though keep a wildfire spreading in southern california. we'll hear from homeowners who don't want to leave despite the fires getting too close. brazil yan authorities removed two olympic swimmers from their flight u.s. after conflicting reports of the robbery of ryan lochte and his teammates. i'm hena daniels in new york, i'll have the latest coming up. entering yesterday the rockies hasn't won back to back games since august 2nd and 3rd but they had a chance to do that wednesday against the nationals and win the series. the home team got off to a good start. a businesses clearing double make it 4-0.

over a million ears of corn are picked a day here in olathe, colorado. and i'm glad we have a senator who uses his ears to listen to what's most important to colorado farmers. michael bennet asked what he could do to help, and then worked with republicans to make a farm bill that's making a difference to all farmers in colorado. the thing that impresses me most about michael bennet: we don't always agree, but he values our input. and i do trust michael bennet to look out for us.
