is shot and killed in a denver parking lot. it happened early this morning outside a strip club. from that's where cbs4's andrea flores joins us live tonight. andrea, police have still not identified a suspect. >> reporter: that's right. no identification. denver police tell us they're working with businesses in the shopping center to try to get their hands on surveillance video. take a look at this evidence, remains here investigators work to figure out what led up to this deadly shooting. >> reporter: family members of a man shot and killed early sunday morning are looking for answers. their emotions ran high as denver police work throughout the day to piece together clues left behind, like beer cans and a baseball cap. >> is this your vehicle? >> reporter: officers responded

somebody shot behind the building. >> reporter: there they found a man left for dead on the sidewalk. >> it's just an eye opener. you know, just kind of keeps us on alert. >> reporter: it's unclear if the club is connected to the shooting. now the victims identity has not yet been released. police have also not provided any suspect description or a motive. reporting live in denver, >> thank you, andrea. right now, denver police are investigating several cases of slashed tires in capitol hill. tonight, police have not identified any possession suspects. still not clear yet why those vehicles were targeted. meanwhile, there's a disturbing new trend for car owners. auto theft is on the rise here in colorado. denver led the state in the number of auto thefts with an average of 286 each week.

with one of the two prime targets. tom, this is the honda civic, also the accord. the black market wants the parts from these cars. also i'm amazed to hear that some people are still leaving their keys in the ignition. that turns into car into a target for a car thief. this flashing sign posted by the denver police reminds you, lock your vehicle and secure your items. >> it's silly that we have to remind each other to do up. way up. due in part to people not looking their car. >> i always lock my car, but some people don't. >> so that gets you thinking? >> yeah, absolutely and makes me nervous. >> how much is auto theft up? >> 15%. >> higher. >> 20? >> reporter: almost 30% higher in 2015 compared to 2014. why? you could blame newcomers to colorado.

it's move into colorado, and violent crimes increase, auto theft is with those. >> i have a buddy that leaves his car unlocked occasionally. >> why? >> because he doesn't care. >> reporter: he should care, auto theft often plays a role in other crime. >> processing gang activity, stealing these cars, then involved in all kinds of other crimes, where it's running guns, drugs, or a meth ring. criminal access to your car, you're allowing access to your life. >> they have your garage door opener. we had one ring of thieves using them for home invasion. they were stealing the car to break into the home. >> reporter: now that industry group says if just one major auto theft ring is busted, that would put a make dent into this crime of auto theft. reporting live in denver, howard nathan, cbs4 news.

cherry creek reservoir. south metro firefighters were called. a drive team attached tow cables to the vehicle, but they still couldn't pry it loose from the mud. then a diver went down, and placed an air bag under the truck to get it free. the vehicle was finally pulled out after a few hours. taking a look outside, clear skies over denver. the 90s returned today, after a short lived cool down. meteorologist dave live. what a difference a day makes, huh? >> no kidding. yesterday's high was 76. today's high, 91. fort collins and greeley coming in with 90 degrees this afternoon. there are some thunderstorms still in southern park county, and sending high cloudiness up into denver. we'll have some clouds during the night tonight. but i think by tomorrow morning, they'll be cleared on out of here. if you do have the kids going back to school tomorrow morning, the bus stop forecast looks pretty good in the

sunny skies at 7:00 a.m., and about 60 degrees. the high later though will be warming up. and we have another cold front that will make its way through denver before the week is done. a lot to talk about, coming up in just a few minutes. walden residents forced out of their homes by the beaver creek fire returned home this weekend. the fire started in june. since then, it's burned nearly 37,000 acres. tonight, 53% cone containment lines. full containment is not expected until mid-october. new developments tonight in the case of elderly abuse. cbs4 has learned that the suspect, julie steenhoak has been arrested. the elderly patient says steenhoak had been taking care of her, but family members said the person was brainwashed. >> we didn't have a clue on what was going on.

this year, when julie steenhoak moved in with the elderly victim. over time, she gained the victim's trust, and was even written into the victim's will. investigators believe steenhoak was working to drain the victim's bank accounts and even take the money from selling the house. in july, the victim died. >> i would love to see julie behind bars, so she can't do this to any other family at any other time. >> reporter: steenhoak was charged with felony at risk exploitation. but that's just seven court cases involving steenhoak and the victim's family. steenhoak is still trying to claim money and as sets from the victim. >> i don't know her intentions. i cannot believe she still feels she has any right to anything in my family. >> reporter: the victim's daughter says the whole ordeal has been a nightmare. >> this is so rampant, it's so disgusting. >> reporter: but hopes others can learn from this. >> your family, or your parents start to disappear a little

disappearing, because it may be that somebody is influencing them. >> reporter: in lafayette, jeff todd, cbs4 news. happening now, parts ever fort collins are being sprayed for mosquitoes. this is the second time the area has been sprayed to prevend the spread of the zika virus. crews expect to finish by midnight. you can track the trucks as neighborhood. to campaign 2016 now. a new cbs news poll shows hillary clinton is 6 points ahead of donald trump in ohio. a key swing state. in iowa, clinton and trump are tied at 48%. it's the only state in recent polling where clinton does not have an outright lead. donald trump now trying to gain ground by reaching out to minority voters.

an update on a deadly bombing at a wedding in turkey. the suicide attacker was a 12- year-old, believed to be working for isis. the terror group has not claimed responsibility.

as sister, and uncle were killed. the bride and groom are said to be okay. police in draper, utah, say the pilot died when his motorized glider crashed into a church. rescuers rushed inside the church, but the pilot had already died. police identified him as 57- year-old jim peterson. a friend says he was with before the accident. >> having just been with jim, knowing that he was in the air, i came out, and i didn't know that it was jim until they had notified next of kin. >> no one else was hurt, but the church canceled services. new information tonight about the death of legendary singer prince. authorities say pills found on the musician's property were counterfeit drugs that contained fentanyl.

bottles. prince did not have a prescription for any controlled substances. last june, an autopsy report showed prince died from a fentanyl overdose. the latest now on the ryan lochte saga. the swimmers will now face disciplinary action. last night, lochte went on record and apologized for his actions. >> i over-exaggerated that story. >> reporter: four time ryan lochte, says he takes full responsibility for embellishing the incident in rio that brought outrage. >> if i wouldn't have done that, we wouldn't be in this mess. none of this would have happened, and it was my immature behavior. >> reporter: surveillance video shows lochte, and three of his teammates at a gas station after a party last sunday. lochte told police, as they tried to leave, a security guard held them at gunpoint, and robbed them.

the olympians were confronted by the security guard, only after they had vandalized the bathroom. >> when four athletes come to you and say, this is what's happened. we have no reason not to believe them. >> today, officials with the u.s. olympic committee did not specify what consequences they will face. >> they let down our athletes. they let down americans, and they really let down our hosts in rio. >> the four swimmers in the incident are now back in the u.s. jimmy feigen was allowed to leave after donating. jason huesong says he was camping when this moose walked right past his tent. >> keep going, moose. >> nothing to see there. so that animal moved on without

we got a break in the heat, but the 90s returned today. ingly would like to tell the 90s to just keep going. we have a little cold front coming through by the middle of the week, that will get us back to that fall like feel. today, we had enough heat where we got thunderstorms going. the closest ones to denver, down here in southern jefferson county where those guys bubbled up from the moisture coming down south. did not quite make it into denver, but it did spread in the way of d sprinkles left, down south, right along the palmer divide here, and pushing back into the central mountains. nothing really, heavy duty. the thunderstorms are tapering off there tonight. as far as the big picture, we have high pressure moving in over utah, out over colorado, and that's what's drying things out for us. we should see that high, kind of just translate into the

continue to dry us out over northern colorado tomorrow. that's a good thing to see. at the same time, we've got a cold front that is moving into the pacific northwest right now. and that should slide through tuesday night into wednesday. that will dramatically change our weather coming up by then. high today was 91 degrees. so it did heat up quite a bit. 89 downtown. right now, it's nice. 75 in the city. a little cooler at the at 68 degrees with a south- southeast wind at 13 miles per hour. lori finch, our weather watcher at foxfield is coming in at 72 tonight. i want you to take a close look at this shot from our twitter feed. your broker sent this in. he shot this near bailey. a come of leaves are already changing to yellow. fall is right around the corner, knocking own the door. tomorrow will be clear across the east. cloudy out west, and that means temperatures out in western

but it also means you have a chance of thunderstorms out here. our chances across the east will be isolated at best. about a 10% chance or less for most of colorado tomorrow. here's the heat again, out to the east. 80s and 90s, mixed together here. 70s into the mountains. we'll bring you down into the 70s and 80s in western colorado. partly cloudy early tonight. we'll be close to 60 overnight low. good air quality out there tonight. tomorrow, mostly sunny. a slight chance of a late day storm, and close to 90 for the high temperature. we bring it back to 85 tuesday. isolated storms, it's tuesday night into wednesday, the cold front comes through. 70s return for a while, with a better chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. next weekend, i think it's going to be another nice weekend. low 80s, and just a slight chance of afternoon storms. >> i think we're done with the

keep going 90s, keep going. closing ceremonies for the olympic games in rio took place tonight. today here in colorado, a statewide special olympics competition also wrapped up. >> hundreds of athletes took part in the events. kelly werthmann met with some of the excited competitors. >> reporter: while the world is busy watching olympians compete in rio, coloradans are supporting some very special athletes. >> how did you win that gold medal? >> because i did good in tennis. >> they all, always play to the highest level that they possibly can. they care about winning. they care about carrying their part of the steam or individual sport. they're excited to be out here. >> it's a privilege to be in the special olympics. >> reporter: alex is among the 600 athletes taking part in the colorado special olympics at redstone park. like his competition, he loves

when you start getting used to it, then it comes naturally. >> i love tennis so much. >> reporter: special olympians are vying for the gold, silver, and bronze in a variety of sports. >> i like playing basketball, tennis, and swimming. >> congratulations. is that the bronze medal? >> yes. >> awesome job. >> reporter: these support and encourage athletes of all age and abilities. helpin different sports at school. >> people with, and without disabilities, playing on the seam team. really showing other people the tremendous abilities of our athletes. the talents that they bring to the table, and making friends. >> reporter: not every special olympian walks away with a medal, but alex says he and his fellow athletes leave these games with inspiration, worth more than gold. >> everybody learns something

the rockies looking for a series win over the cubs today. keep in mind, the cubs have the best record in the majors. the rapids goalie threw out the first pitch to nolan arenado. nolan had himself a ballgame. late inner the 1st, the rockies would bat around. the pitcher helping his cause. the rockies up 7-0 after 1. then in the 4th, more from arenado. another three he said he stayed late last night working on his swing. apparently it worked. he was 4 for 5 today. the rockies up 10-0. the rockies win it 11-4, they take the series from the cubs. >> we've won some series against some of the better clubs in the game. i think that should show us we're capable of doing those kinds of things. >> we've got some games left. i think there's 39 games or something like that.

over a million ears of corn are picked a day here in olathe, colorado. and i'm glad we have a senator who uses his ears to listen to what's most important to colorado farmers. michael bennet asked what he could do to help, and then worked with republicans to make a farm bill that's making a difference to all farmers in colorado. the thing that impresses me most about michael bennet: we don't always agree, but he values our input. and i do trust michael bennet to look out for us.
