developing tonight, a stolen car with precious cargo. a thief took an suv with two children inside from a store parking lot. it ended after police chased down that suspect. karen morfitt is live in thornton for us. the thief only stopped because of a flat tire. >> reporter: and he did that after trying to get away from police. he came up to this empty field, blue that tire and even damaged the vehicle some field tonight with other parts of the vehicle. all of this while those children were still inside. this powerful photo captures the moment officers are able to take too young children into their arms. for nearly 30 minutes, the three-month-old and three-year- old girls were riding around in this suv with a car thief. >> one of the officers looked

so happy the kids weren't hurt. >> reporter: around noon, dear mother ran inside the family dollar, leaving the girls in the suv with it running. federal heights police say while she was inside, she saw a man trying to get into suv. when she tried to stop him, he pushed her away and took off. a short time later, he was spotted on i-25 and police went after him. samuel hubbard saw the end of that chase. >> the police are going after him, passing the jeep. the suspect was running into the tall grass.>> reporter: hubbard, a professional photographer snapped these photos, capturing not only the suspect's arrest and police comforting those children, but the parent's relief as they were reunited with their daughters. >> mom was very emotional. it looked like there was a family member holding her hand, walking with her and she was just gasping for air. >> reporter: 34-year-old eric masters will likely face kidnapping, and car theft among others. as for the mother, police are

she will face charges for leaving those children inside the vehicle. live in thornton, karen morfitt cbs 4 news. we're learning more about a man killed by lightning over the weekend. chad trovo was killed in the mountains outside fort collins. his family says they are just trying to find some comfort amid tragedy. >> reporter: he was in one of his favorite places when a small but very strong storm came through. he was >> it was definitely a place that he couldn't live without. that was our second home and i believe that was his have in.>> reporter: janna clar drover takes comfort knowing her father's last hours were spent in the place he loved most, the mountains of northern colorado. he liked to fish and ride atvs. >> you never really caught him relaxing. >> he was in crystal lake's

caring man. >> she was on the phone with her dad when he was hit by lightning. >> the phone line cut out. i kept trying to call him back. there was just no answer. >> reporter: a few hours later, he died at the hospital. >> the hardest part was the doctor telling me that it's time to say goodbye to your dad. >> reporter: born on the fourth of july, chad loved the american flag and under people and memories. there is one memory that will stay only in his daughter's heart. of the last hug they shared. >> i didn't think that would be the last time i touched my dad. it's definitely the memory that i am holding onto right now. >> reporter: chad trover is now the second person to die by lightning strike in colorado.

course. we are live in denver, lauren dispirito cbs 4 news. tonight, denver police want to find a man they call very dangerous. officers say he was driving a stolen black pickup truck and they pulled him over -- tried to pull him over at 39th and peoria but the driver slammed into a patrol car and sped off. the stolen truck was found at evans and holly were surveillance video shows the same man police believe stealing another pickup truck. a coworker of that vehicle's owner explains what happened. >> she came out to get in her truck, to get something, and her truck was gone. >> no one was hurt. police say the thief at this point might be driving a white 1998 f 250 with special black flame paint. it has montana plates b4813.

one and hospitalized to others saturday night on federal and the i-76 on-ramp. jeff todd joins us live there tonight. the investigation is still taking some time and state patrol still doesn't have any answers. >> reporter: we were originally told on saturday night that street racers were coming down federal and that this light may have been read. now, we're told those cars may not have actually been racing down the street but maybe just trying to be polite. regardless, that decision ended up killing a loving father. >>reporter: john jefferson was on his way to life insurance. he was turning from northbound federal to the i-76 on-ramp as another car was speeding toward it. >> ran the red light and at that point, a northbound vehicle was making a left turn. he got t-boned, hit the wall. >> reporter: everyone knew john jefferson as jj. his family is still shocked, telling us they lost most loving, funny and caring father. the family is also concerned how long this investigation is taking. they feel like they are

call radosti patrol told us today is they are not sure if people were racing but speed is certainly a factor in the wreck. the 22-year-old driver, eric sandoval and his 16-year-old passenger are still in the hospital and criminal charges are expected. the investigation is going to take at least a few more days if not weeks. troopers hope to re-interview some of the witnesses to get a clear picture of exactly what happened here. just last er obedience are one -- numidians along this exact stretch of federal. investigators were hoping to find mark lose but in this area, the only thing around is a cdot yard and they do not record their surveillance video. live in adams county, jeff todd cbs news. new tonight, after weeks of investigating, police arrest a driver they say ran down a

took off. the 25-year-old woman was hit at 65th and federal. she broke her pelvis, spine, ribs, and knows. police eventually arrested spencer rausch. they also arrested his father, james, for allegedly helping his son try to cover up the crime. cbs 4 has been able to talk to the hiker who took this youtube video of two men spray painting rocks on lookout mountain. it got a lot of attention. the hiker took the video to the jeffco sheriff's office, which is now investigating. he didn't want to show his face on camera because he says the >> they spray-painted someone's name is gay, which is obviously homophobic. this is just not acceptable, especially for the beauty of the nature we have here in colorado. >> investigators say video of the vandals 'car will help locate them. if caught, they face a misdemeanor charge of defacing property. in a story we broker earlier on www.cbsdenver.com, two police officers are in trouble for playing pokimon go and set of training recruits as

city to get tonight's information. stand, no winners in this game pick >> reporter: we are in one of the areas where those officers were likely wasting time instead of doing police work. you would have to live under a rock to not know that pokimon go is the hottest game of the summer. and now this game has gotten those officers and hot water. they were supposed to be teaching recruits how to chase criminals. inst were taking those recruits into the field to catch pokemon. the officers were caught by a supervisor, who noticed both officers going to unusual places. they were suspended and had their training authority revoked late last week when the recruits confessed to looking for the cartoon characters while on the job. commerce city police wouldn't speak on camera on the story but released this statement saying "the city places the highest value on protecting the public and upholding the trust of the

highest standard and expect unquestionable integrity." last week, the justice department agreed to review a series of officer misconduct cases in commerce city. this hunt for pokemon is just the latest black eye for a department searching for better publicity. both of those officers are also losing pay by losing the right to train recruits. it's not clear yet if commerce city police intend to fire those officers. stan bush, cbs 4 news. now to an update to a story we have been following for months. the city of denver is paying more than a half-million dollars to a former assistant city attorney to settle a lawsuit. stewart shapiro was put on leave after handling a high profile case involving a denver jail inmate. our investigation found that he was paid more than $200,000 during that two-year leave.

provided all my emails that could possibly be work-related. >> reporter: clinton's campaign aides say they are not sure what is in those documents but support all the work-related email from her time as secretary of state being released. lawyers for the state department predict those emails will be released to the public by mid-october at the earliest, just before the election. thieves with on weapons security cameras show three crocodiles being pushed through the windows of a school in australia. four suspects break-in and ransack the front office. police say the crocodiles' mouths were all taped up and they were undernourished. officials are trying to figure out where the crocodiles came from. a terrifying 45 minutes for parents after their boat crashed and their children fell into the water. the boat hit a telephone pole wire while in the water,

including the couple's baby and toddler. mom, dad and baby made it out safely but the toddler was trapped for nearly an hour under the boat. they heard her crying from an air pocket under it. >> thank you for saving my baby and saving our world. i can't imagine. i just can't imagine. >> emergency crews say a life jacket saved that little girl, keeping her afloat in the air pocket. way. >> after 90 degrees today, i think we're going to see cooler temperatures. all of the showers beginning to die down if they haven't done that already. we have a pretty good pocket of storms in kansas. take a look at these storms going through las vegas and western arizona. pretty good moisture over the area. we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms every day this week. in fact, let's take a look at the hour by hour. those storms just kind of rumble over kansas and then dying down. 3:00 tomorrow, storms lining up, heavier in the mountains and they push along the front range.
