developing tonight, a stolen car with precious cargo. a thief took an suv with two children inside from a store parking lot. it ended after police chased down that suspect. karen morfitt is live in thornton for us. the thief only stopped because of a flat tire.

after trying to get away from police. he came up to this empty field, blue that tire and even damaged the vehicle some more. you can see the bumper in the field tonight with other parts of the vehicle. all of this while those children were still inside. this powerful photo captures the moment officers are able to take too young children into their arms. for nearly 30 minutes, the three-month-old and three-year- old girls were riding around in this suv with a car thief. >> like he was tearing up taking the get that because they were so happy the kids weren't hurt. >> reporter: around noon, dear mother ran inside the family dollar, leaving the girls in the suv with it running. federal heights police say while she was inside, she saw a man trying to get into suv. when she tried to stop him, he pushed her away and took off. a short time later, he was spotted on i-25 and police went after him.

>> the police are going after him, passing the jeep. the suspect was running into the tall grass.>> reporter: hubbard, a professional photographer snapped these photos, capturing not only the suspect's arrest and police comforting those children, but the parent's relief as they were reunited with their daughters. >> mom was very emotional. it looked like there was a family member holding her hand, walking with her and she was just gasping for air. >> reporter: 34-year-old eric masters will likely face others. as for the mother, police are investigating whether or not she will face charges for leaving those children inside the vehicle. live in thornton, karen morfitt cbs 4 news. we're learning more about a man killed by lightning over the weekend. chad trovo was killed in the mountains outside fort collins. his family says they are just

amid tragedy. >> reporter: he was in one of his favorite places when a small but very strong storm came through. he was in between two trees. >> it was definitely a place that he couldn't live without. that was our second home and i believe that was his have in.>> reporter: janna clar drover takes comfort knowing her father's last hours were spent in the place he loved most, the mountains of northern colorado. he liked relaxing. >> he was in crystal lake's helping a friend build a cabin. >> he was the most kind and caring man. >> she was on the phone with her dad when he was hit by lightning. >> the phone line cut out. i kept trying to call him back. there was just no answer. >> reporter: a few hours later, he died at the hospital.

the stolen truck was found at evans and holly were surveillance video shows the same man police believe stealing another pickup truck. a coworker of that vehicle's owner explains what happened. >> she came out to get in her truck, to get something, and her truck was gone. >> no one was hurt. police say the thief at this point might be driving a white 1998 f 250 with special black flame paint. it has montana plates b4813. if you see it, call police. new developments in a devastating crash that killed one and hospitalized to others saturday night on federal and the i-76 on-ramp. jeff todd joins us live there tonight. the investigation is still taking some time and state patrol still doesn't have any answers. >> reporter: we were originally told on saturday night that street racers were coming down federal and that this light may have been read. now, we're told those cars may not have actually been racing

up killing a loving father. >>reporter: john jefferson was on his way to work, selling life insurance. he was turning from northbound federal to the i-76 on-ramp as another car was speeding toward it. >> ran the red light and at that point, a northbound vehicle was making a left turn. he got t-boned, hit the wall. >> reporter: everyone knew john jefferson as jj. telling us they lost most loving, funny and caring father. the family is also concerned how long this investigation is taking. they feel like they are being left out of the loop. call radosti patrol told us today is they are not sure if people were racing but speed is certainly a factor in the wreck. the 22-year-old driver, eric sandoval and his 16-year-old passenger are still in the hospital and criminal charges are expected. the investigation is going to take at least a few more days if not weeks.

they were supposed to be teaching recruits how to chase criminals. instead, two commerce city training officers were taking those recruits into the field to catch pokemon. the officers were caught by a supervisor, who noticed both officers going to unusual places. they were suspended and had their training authority revoked late last week when the recruits confessed to looking for the cartoon characters while on the job. commerce city police wouldn't speak on camera on the story but released this statement saying "the city places the highest value on protecting the public and upholding the trust of the people we serve. we hold our officers to the highest standard and expect unquestionable integrity." last week, the justice department agreed to review a series of officer misconduct cases in commerce city. this hunt for pokemon is just the latest black eye for a department searching for better publicity. both of those officers are also
