great to have you with us. this is the news on cbs news. a look downtown. it is the 23rd of august. i'm alan gionet. good to have you here. >> thanks for joining us. i'm britt moreno. we're expecting some thunderstorms later today. let's get over to lauren and figure out the timeline for this. good morning. >> good morning. some of those storms especially in our south western corner into the western slope could cause flooding because we had heavier rainfall

i'll talk about our chances for storms in the denver area, but first let's check with joel. >> east of town, you can see northbound along arapahoe road to i-225, that's a 6-minute drive somebody along i-225 from parker road to i-25, we have speeds into the 60s, britt. thank you, joel. new this morning, two people are dead in a head on crash in loveland. it happened shortly after highway 34 just east of i-25. police say a man driving a pickup truck was going the wrong way. he slammed into a woman in another car and both of them died. police say they don't know why the man was going the wrong way. they normally don't have a voice, but today they will be heard. the secretary of state is spear heading a push to get homeless people to vote. cbs4 jaime leary is live for people can register at the mlk library in aurora.

that event happens right here today. many people might not know this, but there are options for homeless. they can register to vote and get information. where ever they consider a home base in a public location they may reside or any rescue mission. the denver rescue mission has 75 registered voters, but officials say more of the homeless community need to learn about their options. secretary of state wayne williams is going to be speaking at the event this it's called homelessness. it's a way to get them to exercise their freedom to vote. so many factors can contribute to homelessness. some are family break ups and illnesses and job losses. there's an outreach to homeless along the corridor to let them know about this morning's event. though they're registering those in aurora this morning, the push is for all of

investigation. clinton campaign aides say they're not sure what's in the documents, but support her work-related e-mails being released. at a campaign event in ohio, trump sought to keep the line light on clinton's foundation. mounting claims saying its foreign donors got special treatment. >> it's done and the sigca amount of time it was done requires an expedited investigation by a special prosecutor immediately, immediately, immediately. >> the republican nominee also made a pitch to minority voters. >> what do you have to lose? i will straighten it out. we'll get rid of the crime. you'll be able to walk down the street without getting shot. >> a new monmouth poll shows clinton leading trump among

skies. a breeze as well and for your hour-by-hour forecast, temperatures in the 80s by noon and we stay there today. upper 80s with a chance of isolated storms this evening. let's check with joel, good morning. lauren, it's happening. the morning commute getting underway. i-76, i-270, you can see the stream of headlights as you travel along i-76 itself. along 270, you have flashing lights as they pick up construction. along i-270 -- somebody along i-25, we have speeds into the0s to i-70, we'll see slowing due to volume. that's what we're seeing along the tech center in the southbound direction. we're across the denver-metro area, a couple of side street trouble spots along walsworth as they've been doing construction work north of 6th avenue. on highway, loading up, but not slowing down too bad. two children are back home with their mother this morning after they were kidnapped in a car jacking. their mom left them in the vehicle while she went into a store and shopped.

here. >>reporter: this powerful photo captures the moment officers are able to take two young children into their arms. for nearly 30 minutes, the 3-month-old and 3-year old girl was riding along in this suv. >> they were happy the kids weren't hurt. >> their mother ran inside the family dollar leaving the girls in the suv with it running. federal heights police say while she was inside she trying to get into her suv. when she tried to stop her, he pushed her away and took off. a short time later he was spotted along i-25 and police went after him. >> i think this one is the more dramatic ones. >> daniel saw the end of that chase. >> the police were going after him passing the jeep and the suspect jumped out and ran into a tall grass. >> a professional photographer snapped these photos capturing not only the suspect's arrest

relief as they're reunited with their daughters. >> mother was emotional and she was in tear and there was a family member walking with her. she's gasping for air. >> that was karen morfitt reporting. 34-year old eric is expected to face several charges including car theft and kidnapping. as for the mom, it's unclear if she'll be charged for leaving the kids in the suv. the state patrol tells us figuring out why a car hit and killed a father at i-76 and federal could take tim at first they believe it was street racing and now state patrol says there's a question about that or a car who t-boned the loving father was trying to beat a light. todd with the latest. >>reporter: he was turning from northbound federal to i-76 on ramp as another car was speeding toward him. >> he ran the red light and at that point, a northbound vehicle was making a left turn. he got t-boned, struck into the wall.

john jefferson as j.j.. and his family is still shocked saying they lost the most loving, and caring father. the family is concerned with how long this investigation is taking. they feel like they're being left out of the loop. colorado state patrol told us today they're not sure if people were racing, but speed is certainly a factor in the wreck. the 22-year old driver dominic sand val and his 16-year old passenger are in the hospital. criminal charges are exed more days if not weeks. troopers hope to re-interview some of the witnesses to get a clear picture of exactly what happened here. >> jeff todd reporting there. that crash took place near cdot yard which has cameras, but they're live feeds. they don't record video. if you're waking up, it's pretty warm outside at 73 degrees. and those thunderstorms are coming later today. we're talking about president obama. he's coming to

same for kids ages 2-18. eating too much sugar in childhood is linked to an increased risk of obese and higher blood pressure later on in life. young football players may have a higher risk of head injuries while taking -- that's the findings of researchers at virginia tech who followed 34 places 9-11. 75% of high magnitude head impacts occurred during practice and they suggest that coaches reduce time to blocking drills to lessen the chances of head injuries. having a positive attitude could warrant better success for breast cancer patients going through hormone therapy. those who envision themselves having bad side effects before treatment experienced twice as many as women with more positive expectations. the research found counseling could help women view the therapy as more positive and therefore stick

we have a lot of headlights whether you're traveling along i-270 or i-76. look around the bin. southbound coming into town, speeds into the 60s right now. dip into the 50s passed 104th. 120th out to i-70, that's a 9-minute drive. we're watching westbound along i-76. not turning yellow yet, but it will in the next quarter hour. this is our cbs4 tech cam. southbound heavy, but as you go through the bridges both directions. really from hamden to c-470 loading up this morning. we have trouble spots in lakewood. we'll zoom in here. we have highland closed that's right at walsworth and that's due to some ongoing road work. with very slowing in the southbound direction. there's a water main break at 23rd that's closed off walsworth. this is a
