earthquake has killed 38 people. homes collapsed on top of residents as they slept. a series of aftershocks rattled buildings causing them to collapse. the mayor says, "the town is not here anymore." other nearby towns are dealing with aftermath of the destruction. heavy equipment is being usedo >> britt, i want to bring you in here. here's the boot of italy coming in and we're going to the area northeast of rome. rome is here and this is up in this area here, this earthquake was centered a few miles to the west of where that happened. all of this about 86 miles northeast of rome in that area. this quake was so strong there were tremors that hit some parts

hands to find survivors. we're taking you around the world here to burma and show you there what's going on. i'm going to zoom out for you and we're going to move over to southeast asia now. this is what was known as burma now myanmar. there's been a strong earthquake there. the more powerful earthquake registering 6.8 has shaken that area. no w casualties. we will continue to track both of them and keep you updated on both as we get new information. a lot happening this morning around the world and here in our state. this morning people in boulder are asked to stay in their homes while police search for a man they say is armed and dangerous. the swat team has been coming the area of foothills parkway and baseline road this morning. you may have seen them out there. jamie leary is live in the area with a good description of the

streets. good morning, jamie leary. >> good morning. just want to give you guys a heads up. the school district deciding how to go about their day this morning. they they had they would be notifying parents and police officers. we want to get right to the picture. this is 34-year old russell daniels described as six feet tall and 155 pounds. criminal history. he's likely armed and still in the area travelling on foot. he was last seen wearing a red shirt and tan pants chls. this all started around 10:30 last night. the swat team has been utilizing a number of resources looking for him. they have an area of focus and haven't moved resources too far from our location near baseline and foothills parkway. right now near the meadows

focus. police first ran into daniels when they were checking out a suspicious motor home. there was also a woman with a restraining order against him. when police approached the motor home and questioned daniels, he fired four rounds and retreated. they say there's a lot of blood visible in the motor home likely as a result of daniels shooting himself. the helicopter is in the air getting boulder pd with the search for russell daniels. the important thing to remember is shelter in place. we'll have an interview and get updates necessary on this investigation so make sure you stick with us on air and online as well. live in boulder, jamie leary, cbs4 news. a man claiming to be a surgeon in denver is accused of performing major operations without a medical license.

charges after performing facelift, looip suction and other plastic surgeries. it happened at the care dlin k on federal and alameda -- -- clinic. she said he did not properly sedate her. >> the cutting of her skin we do a form of looip suction and she felt every minute of it while it was going the doctor. >> hernandez is out on bond and will be in court next month for a preliminary hearing chls the denver da office believes it's possible there may be more victims and asks anyone who may have been a victim to come forward. here's lauren with weather and traffic. >> we have rain in parts of the state. .35 inches from rain on the western slope. the western slope has cleared this morning but we do have rain

mountains and foothills and out east into the plains down into the south western corner. as we zoom in there's white mixed in there so some snow at 12,000 feet this morning. scattered showers in conifer and bailey and in the denver area getting more activity and light rain in the city. as we move to the eastern plains you will hit some of that and more filling in near yuma. futurecasts you see spotty showers and by lunch rain in some parts look to be heavy. this is a weak system coming through. here in the denver area as well out east into the plains. temperatures today much cooler. the bus stop not bad this morning. 60 degrees and some areas in the up 50s and 60s. let's check in with joel. good morning, our breaking news traffic alert this morning, this is the area as you travel

as the search continues. they have a swat situation there asking folks to shelter in place. let me show you this on the map. you're not able to access on to fot hill parkway. you have to access u.s. 36 and come across on highway seven if you need to get east of that portion of town. you can also continue northbound along foothill parkway to the north of i-seven this usual spots and eastbound along i-270 and southbound as you get past i-76 along i-225 as well. we have a stall in the westbound direction of evans and holly and an accident southbound along wadsworth blocking off a lane. if you're getting in your car, turn on our partners for the latest traffic and cbs weather today. thornton city council has

the denver post reports the council approved a plan to build one near 136th avenue and i-25. it did come from objections from neighbors. the new top golf is the second multilevel driving range in colorado. there's another open in centennial. the council approved retail marijuana shops for the first time last night. there's four in the city now. thornton was the state's largest city with a ban. we should learn more about the allegations against a colorado sheriff accused of sex assault. thomas hannah is due in court today. he was arrested in nearby logan county after a joint investigation with the colorado bureau of investigation. she's been through all kinds of pain and emotions. a woman left mind by a hit-and-run driver who hit her on her scooter is now outraged.

pelvis and back and cuts and abrasions. she has learned the story of spencer raush accused of hitting her. his family covered for him after paint chips on her car wr found on her scooter. neighbors saw raush and his father try to fix damage on the front end of the car. >> i was just amazed at how much these people helped me officers to get these bad people off the streets. >> she did find some good in all of this. you can tell she's having difficulty getting around seven weeks after the crash. she's recovering faster than expected walking with a cane. raush is accused in the crash. he and his 54-year old father james are accused of lying to investigators. new information on a home in fountain south of colorado springs. the house was auctioned off with

external inspection but never went inside. the new owner found a woman dead in a bedroom. it's believed the woman was dead for months. attorneys say it's not uncommon for banks to never step foot inside a foreclosed home especially if it looks like one is living there. hundreds of students having a rough start to the school year after their apartments were deemed uninhabitable.wh private bedrooms were dwieed by moving book shelves. some of the inspections were done after the move. they did fix the problems by installing curtains. they let tenants opt out of their leases or give credit for the time they have been displaced. the city is still looking at citing the property owners. druch heads to mississippi and missouri today and hillary clinton's campaign is pushing back against a new ap report.

her time at the state department. brian webb has the latest. hillary clinton greeted supporters after a full day of fundraising in california as her past involvement. more than half of the people outside government who met with clinton during her time as secretary of state all donated in some way to foundation. the ap says the meetings could poez ethical challenges to a clinton presidency. the clinton campaign pushed back saying the report relied on flawed data and portrays a distorted version of her betrayal. donald trump called the development evidence of the democratic nominee's so-called pay to play politics. >> they didn't get the access to say hello.

we're looking 59 rain more today. scattered showers into the central mountains and out east into the plains. here in denver not a ton of activity but we're starting to see more sprinkles. some of it notng snow in parts of the high country close to the leadville area and brekenridge and maybe along i-70 as well. decker is getting closer to castle rock and rainfall this morning near parker and boulder. along i-76 once you get to fort morgan heading towards fort sterling and scattered showers near yuma as well. scattered showers on and off

a traffic alert that is closed off all of foothill parkway from baseline out to arapahoe this morning. you can see the police presence around the various neighbors through there. they're taking cars and turning them around if you're trying to access baseline across foothill parkway and you're not able to do that. they're keeping cars to the west. jamie leary is live out there with an update in a couple minutes. you can purple extending highway seven out to u.s. 36. you can access along foot hell parkway as you get to the north of highway seven. an accident this morning in the eastbound direction of u.s. 36 as you get past wadsworth. it's off to the right shoulder and a look across the denver metro area we have that volume in the usual spots slowing down and loading up. we may have a trouble spot in the northbound direction as you

at holly where there's a stall and an accident southbound. this is the news in business this morning. it turns out not everything bigger is better and america is feeling cheesy this morning. jill wagner is live at the new york stock exchange to explain all this. hi jill. >> reporter: good morning, it's been a quiet week in wall street. a lot of the nasdaq was up 15 points and futures pointing to a higher open. sharers for the epipen fell on tuesday -- -- shares. some members are of congress are calling for an investigation. homes are getting smaller. the national association of home builders says square footage of a median single family home fell by 70%.

and appeal to baby boomers who want to down size. there's too much cheese in the united states. stock piles are at the highest level in 30 years because of higher production, imports from europe, and less demand. the government is buying $20 million worth of cheese to give to food banks and pantries. a little brie is always good. thank you for that, jill. let's look at stories. the teenager caught on video pray painting graffiti says he regrets doing it now. a hiker recorded vi owe of two young men defacing a rock. they tracked down the 18-year old of thornton. he's looking at a citation and misdemeanor count of defacing

charged. we'll hear what he had to say coming you in our 6:30 this morning. seven children ages 2-9 found hungry and living in filthy conditions inside this home. officials say they found rat droppings and rats running around the home in miami gardens, florida. there were roaches where the children slept. two couples were living in the house andhr positive for marijuana and cocaine. the children are currently in foster care. the judge told the parents any family members who want custody would have to submit to a drug test. they're out of the house now. rockies in milwaukee for game two. the rockies up in the third but the lead didn't hold up. in 7th the brewers went up for good. 6-4 the final.

russell daniels. jamie leary, cbs4 news. now a check on the weather. we already have snow. the weather has changed and you can feel it. a live look outside where skies are on the cloudy side this morning. not much activity here in denver but we will see the chance for rain on and off throughout the day today and temperatures are cooler. we do have rain mainly out to the west. you can see in parts of the foothills and mountains and out east into we'll talk more about this in a moment. let's check in with joel. we're watching the drive load up across the morning. here are the drive times from the north. 120th out and speeds dipping into the average. into the 30s as you get through commerce city westbound along i-76. we have new information of the breaking news out of italy this morning. a deadly 6.2 earthquake has

killed at least 50 people now. >> many still trapped in the rubble and dozens of buildings have been destroyed. the one that happened six years ago killed close to 600 people. tina has the latest. hours after the earthquake hit. rescue teams led this man away from the devastation away workers used buckets and bulldozers and hands to dig through debris. this rescue worker says we need chain saws, sheers to cut iron bars and jacks to remove beams. we need everything. the u.s. geological survey says it struck at 3:30 in the morning while most people were asleep. several aftershocks followed.

on my head so i wasn't hit." the hardest hit towns are 100 miles northeast of rome. the mayor of one hard hit town said a family of four was trapped under a collapsed building with no signs of life. the mayor said, "the town isn't here anymore" as he made a plea for hr help to clear the streets and rescue the injured. the prime minister of italy tweeted out, "heavy equipment i this family dog was pulled out from one collapsed home. rescuers are still digging hoping to find survivors. the u.s. state department is asking american citizens in italy to contact family and check in on social media. >> facebook has activated the safety check in that region. >> weather and traffic now. it's cloudy and cool

when it's this cloudy but fairly mild for us. i was on the roof top to check it out. taking a look at satellite and radar there was rain early this morning and most is in the central mountains down into the southwest. a little bit better as you head towards the foothills in day by area and high country near leadville there's rain and snow 12,000 feet. more as you head out this direction north of the burlington area and then from fort morgan towards sterling along i-76 there's rain as well. let's look at futurecast. we expect to see spotty showers on and off throughout the day. we may get rain in denver and this is a weak system moving through and doesn't have a ton of moisture with it but we'll take what we can get.

showers cruising through the mountains and denver area. overnight tonight skies clearing and a few clouds tomorrow morning and we have a chance of more rain tomorrow with heavier pockets potentially in parts of the high country and snow. here in denver we could get showers as well. temperatures right now 64 degrees in denver and 64 in boulder and 63 in greeley. in the eastern plains 63 for burlington and 40 in leadville and 59 in grand junction. the big change with this system that you will cooler temperatures. 73 in denver today. 93 on monday so a big time drop there. 71 in boulder and greeley and 77 in burlington. 68 in eagle and we'll have the mid 80s on the western slope. for your hour by hour forecast, expect rain on and off today. if you don't get rain it will be on the cloudy and cool side. tomorrow 76 degrees and showers possible. friday actually widespread rain and we should mild this weekend.

shoulder causing delays. new details in the graffiti on look out mountain. the teenager with spray paint regrets he did. a hiker confronted two young men. using that video investigators tracked down the vandal. we spoke on the phone with the 18 year old. >> i thought it was right to put your name o remembrance. >> do you regret doing this? >> yeah, i would clean it up right away if i could. >> he's now facing a misdemeanor count of defacing property. his friend seen in the video as well is not charged because there's nothing on the video showing him committing a crime. she's most looking forward to meeting new people in her senior year of high school. she opened up with me in an interview, our wednesday's child

search for a quarterback. he says he's proud of all three guys including the one starting saturday, trevor siemian. he actually didn't throw in practice yesterday. the injury came when he tried to make a tackle against the 49ers. the coach says he should be okay and is still expected to start. if he plays well he will get the nod against carolina. another guy is demarcus wear who was back on the practice yesterday. he had been on the football injury list but says he's feeling better and on track to play in the game against carolina. broncos fans are excited about that. rockies fall yesterday. they will try and salvage one game with a day game later in milwaukee.

welcome back. we're off to a cloudy start to the day but from our pike's camera there's been snow. our foothills camera with cloudy skies and parts of rain in the foothills and a cloudy start to the day in the denver area. we're looking at the chance of rain on and off today. you may get light showers here and there. more on the rain and cool down coming up in just a moment. we're watching a couple accidents across the denver metro area this morning. look at all these red icons lining up northbound along

the alameda blocking off the left lane. bricks on the road at i-25. look at it load up as you head southbound coming into town. northbound along parker road and arapahoe speeds dipping down into the teens as you get from parker to the tech center. thank you for the update. this is the news breaking out of boulder this morning. people there are asked to stay indoors and lock their doors while the swat team is looking for a man w they also say this man here is armed and dangerous. jamie leary has been working the scene for us. good morning, what is the update? >>reporter: good morning, they're still working with the boulder school district and no word on closures at this point in time. again that shelter in place is still in effect for residents in this area. behind me it's been an area of focus near the meadows shopping center. that man armed and dangerous and we want to get back to the mug

followed a blood trail. they are using a bear cat as well as dogs to search. there was a woman with a restraining order against russell. she was uninjured. we spoke with boulder police this morning. they say the situation went from a normal search warrant to an actual serious situation. the situation escalated within minutes as soorn as we attempted to make contact the individual. he saw police and immediately became unkoorp tive and st situation escalated -- -- uncooperative. the shelter in place remains and we'll continue to report on this and gather information. jamie leary, live in boulder, cbs4 morning news. while you were sleeping two major earthquakes struck parts of the globe. we begin with this one out of

amatrice. reports say the 6.2 magnitude quake violently shook the area and caused homes to collapse on people sleeping inside. the mayor says "the town is not here anymore." other nearby towns are dealing with the aftermath of destruction. there were a series of aftershocks that rattled the area. heavy equipment is being used to clear the treats. allen is standing by to show us >> i'll show you where amatrice is. it's a town in italy and this is about 86 miles northeast of rome. rome is right here. this is amatrice here. this earthquake was centered a bit to the north west here but this is often busy with tourists this time of the year. this quake was so strong some of the tremors hit parts of rome. crews are working on finding

this is myanmar in asia. it registered a preliminary magnitude stronger than the one in italy. this one 6.8 has shaken central myanmar. the quake sent people running out of tall buildings there. casualties and damages are possible but no reports of either. a man claiming to be a surgeon in denver is accused of performing major without a medical license. carlos fernandez is facing 14 felony charges after performing facelifts, liposuctions and other plastic surgeries. one woman said she was not properly sedated and felt everything during a tummy tuck. it happened at the clink on federal and alameda. he is out on bond and will be in court next month for a preliminary hearing. the district attorney's office

victim and anyone who is to come forward. in the far northeast corner of colorado today a sheriff facing assault charges. they arrested him in his office yesterday in jewels burg after a joint investigation with the colorado bureau of investigation that supposedly involved something that came up recently but no details yet. he leaves a small four person afternoon where we will learn more about the allergies. thornton city council approves a new top golf despite objections from locals. they approved a plan to build one near 136th and i-25 last night. some neighbors worry about the noise and lights and traffic there. the new top golf will be the second multilevel driving range in colorado. there's one in centennial right now.

a car while riding a scooter in denver. she broke her pelvis and suffered lacerations across her body. the 20-year old raush hit her and took off and left her there injured on the road. investigators found his license plate and contacted his family immediately. . his family coffered for him even after paint chips on his car were found uh-huh her scooter. ve to fix the damage on his car. >> i was amazed how much these people helped me and the officers to get these bad people off the streets. >> seven weeks after the crash here's amber walking and recovering faster than expected. she does have to use a cane though. state patrol charged raush and his 54-year old father james for lying to investigators. donald trump heads to mississippi and missouri today.
