week, it was only required in two counties in florida, now it is going nationwide. >> we meant to ensure that people are safe, that's our no. 1 priority >> reporter: despite the mandate from the tda just issued, the blood center in denver will start testing blood for the zika virus. >> we are going to change our policies and procedures change our computer systems to meet that fda guidance and test all the blood donations for zika virus. >> reporter: it's an added level of protection. >> this is what donors are asked to read over before they donate. >> reporter: for the past few months, they have been turning away anyone who has travelled into known zika zone, including the caribbean, mexico, and even florida. >> if you've been in an area where zika is present, if you've

case of zik ach >> reporter: now that precaution is beefed up. there have been cases of zika spread through blood transfusions in brazil. blood centers here have three months to begin testing for zika. >> it's gonna take some time to ensure that we've got owl of our t's crossed and i's dotted >> reporter: blood centers like this one already do testing for hiv and hepatitis. earlier this week, the state did say there are an update on the case of a man who posed as a police officer. today he was sentenced to 60 days in jail for impersonating a cop in may of 2015. the 23-year-old was driving around a legacy with flash lights when he attempted to put someone over. the driver did not believe the man was a cop and called 911.

people from obag legitimate police officer. >> anytime you impersonate a police officer, you're violating the public trust. it certainly scared her quite a bit. in the news at 10:00, a developing story. an airman from buckley air force base facing charges for shooting and killing his wife. he admits he the trigger. karen morfitt following the investigation in aurora. he says it was an accident. he says it was an accident. >> reporter: it happened in their apartment yesterday evening. neighbors say they didn't hear a gunshot but did see the aftermath >> reporter: brian rivera called 911 thursday evening telling dispatchers he shot his wife and she was dead.

probably five or six unmarked cars >> reporter: he was arriving home from work around the same time police were getting to the scene. >> i went upstairs and saw the guy sitting outside his door, blood all over him. >> reporter: according to arrest paperwork, rivera told investigators he and his wife had been "training" that he was trying to show her how to react if someone else had a weapon, playing, trying to take the gun from each other when it went off. >> he was very emotional. crying bad, almost bawling like -- police were having a hard time getting him to calm down. >> reporter: the same documents say at least one neighbor who was questioned by police said she heard fighting coming from the home on a number of out of custodies. wedgeworth says his experience was different. >> i've never heard them fighting, never anything until the officers got here.

>> reporter: aurora police arrested rivera now charged with reckless manslaughter. they'll continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman's death. >> reporter: the arrest paperwork goes on to say that rivera told police he did not remember loading that gun. a spokesperson from buckley says he had just arrived at the base in june and had only been in the air force since december of last police want to talk to the driver of a pickup truck who was at this scene. 51-year-old cindy augustin crashed her suv off i-76 in 136th last friday morning. she then started walking along the interstate where she was killed. witnesses told police they saw a driver checking his front passenger side for damage shortly after that woman was hit. the man was driving a dark-colored extended cab pickup.

being remembered for her generosity after she died saving her young son. chelsea russell was vacationing with her family at lake powell near the utah/arizona border tuesday. her son fell from a boat without a lifejacket. she jumped in and used her chest to keep the boy above the water, but she was unconscious when pulled from the water. she was a prominent natural resources attorney. her coworkers told us they're not surprised by her >> she was a better mom than any other mom i've ever known, including myself. and she would have done anything for her kids. >> her colleagues say russell died of heart failure. she also leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter. happening now, the search for a burglar who stole 35 guns from a pawnshop in thornton. it happened early tuesday morning on washington street near 88.

number of break-ins this summer. >> reporter: we have. you might remember the two gun stores that were broken into in june, in the littleton area. investigators do not believe those are connected to what happened here because the methods of operation are so different. >> reporter: police are asking for your help to identify the man caught on camera burglarizing this thornton pawnshop around 3:20 am tuesday. surveillance video shows them looking around with what appears to be a he got away with 35 handgun, shotguns, and rifles, and this is just one of several gun store break-ins around the metro area in recent months. in march, bass pro, 29 handguns. in june, 30 guns stolen from littleton.

alcohol, to back oh, firearms, and explosives, 170 have been stolen so far in 2016 from licensed gun dealers in the denver metro area. it's already well above the 121 firearms stole then all of 2015 across the entire state of colorado. an increased atf public information officer says it's alarming. >> one firearm, we consider that too many. because we know these firearms are destined for the crimp nal world. -- criminal world >> repor recovered from crime scenes were stolen last year. >> people's lives are at risk when the firearms are stolen and put in criminal hands. that is why she says it is so important to catch that guy now before he's able to sell or trade firearms with other criminals, and also says even though you only saw one suspect there in the surveillance video, he may have had the help of an
