good morning, everyone. i'm britt moreno. and this is the news at 5:00 this morning. >> i'm alan gionet. here's what's happening right now on the cbs4 dogs attack a woman and her son at their own home. the woman has died and the son is here at the hospital. we'll have a live update coming up. sean, we'll check with you. thank you very much. we're learning more about a deadly hit-and-run that killed a young artist. people say more needs to be done to stop drag racing. fans are burning kaepernick's jersey and the 49ers quarterback is getting

source. first, i want to get a look at the forecast today. >> it really is perfect, temperature wise this week. let's get to lauren and find out where the temperatures are going. >> 59 in boulder. 61 in burlington. 40 in aspen. 33 in leadville. we'll talk about temperatures and a chance for rain in a moment. right now let's check with joel. >> we're watching construction at 285 and you can see the slowing we have as you're coming down that hill out to sims this morning, alan, due to overnight construction. >> joel, thank you very much. a mother is dead and her son in the hospital after their dogs go on the attack. this happened in confer. cbs4 shawn chitnis is live right now at swedish medical center where the son was taken. shawn. >>reporter: alan, good morning and the son is here at the

with him calling 911 late last night. the sheriff's office can hear him scream nothing the background. they found two dogs and the dogs are pit bull terriers and the dogs were looks inside the house and you know they attacked a woman and her son. she did have serious injuries and died on scene from those injuries. her son doesn't appear to have life-threatening swedish medical center getting treated for those wounds. we don't have an update on his conditions, but there were two people there at the time and the dogs did live at that home. >> deputies were able to take the dogs into custody with the assistance of animal control and the dogs were transported down the hill alive. >> and those dogs will remain in their custody and we're told the sheriff's office needs to wait for the investigation to wrap up

with those dogs. live in englewood, shawn chitnis, cbs4 morning news. >> thank you for that. we're learning about a deadly hit-and-run that killed a young artist. denver police made an arrest and they're looking for another driver involve -- involved in this street racing that probably led to this crash. >> nick was hit and killed by drag racers. the 26-year old street artist was a block from his home. >> the preliminary look at the id we're talking about interstate highway speeds. >> witnesses told police they say this orange dodge caliber reving its engine with a black sedan and the driver of the dodge, a 17-year old with just a learner's permit left the scene and called his parent before he was turned in to authorities. the other driver is on the run. >> there are organizations that use social media to set these things up. and bring in a

spontaneous or not, officers don't have an opportunity to be there when they occur. >> organized street racing is from yous freighting the -- it's frustrating officials. they take their dangerous sports to dangerous highways and streets. >> they go down morrison road and they go through here. >> police don't know if incident last night was coordinated, but neighbors say on this stretch of alameda, drag races happen every weekend night. >> it's terrible because you know, you need more protection out here. >> that was dan bush reporting for us. police want to hear from anyone with information about the second driver. here's lauren with the forecast. >> we have a little cooler start

patch of slowing. southbound coming into town, looking great. 10 minutes from i-70. great speeds through commerce city. >> thanks, joel. a strange case in centennial where investigators say a man intentionally crashed his car trying to kill his son. police say he told them he wanted to kill his 2-year old son because being a father was a big responsibility. a seatbelt, but his son was not. the boy had serious injuries including a broken femur and a concussion. we're learning more about a deadly home invasion and shooting over the weekend. police tells us they believe the attackers may have known the victim. it was shortly after midnight on saturday when officers raced a block north of morrison and alameda. they found 1 man dead and rushed another to the hospital in critical condition. investigators believes the two

still very brief at this point. the suspects stormed away -- the suspects stormed into the home. >> police want to interview the victim once he's out of icu. many are going after kaepernick who is taking a stand who is sitting if protest of the national anthem. he says he doesn't want to show pride in a flag in black people and people of color. sandy kenyon has the story. >> move to canada. >>reporter: a 49ers fan burning a kaepernick jersey. many fans upset about the quarterback's refusal to stand for the star spangle banner during pre-season football games. and kaepernick says it's a protest against injustice. >> i'm seeing things happen to those who don't have a voice. i'm in a position where i can do

turned 3, may 28th. >> so jacobson and her music is apart of the butterfly program. hospice care for children. >> when you put someone in hospice care, you feel like you're giving up, but they teach you that. you're not giving up. you're preparing. >> the butterfly program offers care for the children and counseling for the family. tiffany lawrence says to do and how she'll fell. >> they said, tiff you look free and i said i am. >> music therapy twice a month brings avery and his mother joy. >> to have some time where they can celebrate being together. >> the focus isn't on losing avery, but embracing the precious days left. >> we love him. we care for him. we give him everything we possibly can. >> tiffany knows her little

thick. 3 tenths of a mile visibility. as you're leaving that area, you're going to have thicker fog and it will probably stick around. 59 degrees in denver. 57 in greeley and akron. 61 in burlington. high country, cool temperaturess morning. 33 in leadville. 39 in gunnison and al amosa. 45 in -- on our satellite and radar, we're quiet and clouds across the front range. western slope on the clear side and in our far south eastern corner to start the day. we have the possibility of more rain later on. we're in the monsoonal flow so we have rain from our tropical moisture flow, so there's chances of heavier rainfall. mostly sunny skies to start. a beautiful beginning of the day. by lunch time, rain possible on the eastern plains. withed we see a little in our central mountains and into the san juans and in denver, coming later on this afternoon and evening. we have a chance of

north eastern corner as well. a few pockets of heavier rain and we have a chance of a little bit of rain even overnight through tomorrow. there's a chance of more fog on the eastern plains. possibly here in denver. the western slope on the dry side. we have a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, up into the foothills and down south, we could get heavy pockets of rain with small hail. temperatures today, miked and low 80 in boulder. 79 in burlington. 82 for la junta and lamar. 73 in eagle. and 74 in aspen. 89 in grand junction. for your bus stop this morning, it should be a nice morning. temperatures in the low 60s and even upper 50s, so a little crisp out there, but not bad. for your hour-by-hour forecast, 70s by noon. low 80s and warmer to end the week.

>> looking from our cbs4 tech september sent -- tech center cam. the flashing lights seem to be gone which is a good sign that the overnight construction work is coming to an end. it needs to come to a close as you head c-470 in the southbound direction coming along the foothills section. have overnight construction projects including along e-470. take a look at the drive times. northbound along parker road to arapahoe road to i-225, speeds in the upper 40s. it's 7-minute drive. between i-225 and i-25, speeds in the 50s and 60s. alan. >> this year's day of service is a great opportunity to find out about a new nonprofit. 70 organizations host to -- you'll be able to spend 3 hours to

that. the business news analyst is here to tell us about the occupations that should see the biggest bounces and -- wage increases have started to pick up, right. >>reporter: absolutely. you know, we've seen 2.5 million people getting jobs over the past year. that's helping workers especially the ones who don't earn a lot of money. according to a new report of bank of america, the low earners at the bottom wages increase at a 3.4% year on year pay so far this year. and with all professionals in high demand and short supply, staffing firm robert hath says next year, 2017, national average starting salaries for all u.s. occupants, we're expecting a bump of 3.6%, so good news. >> i speak for our viewers when

what industry was likely to increase the most. >> slowdown there lady because i don't see broadcast journalist on this list. technology leading with a pro -- technology seems to be growing, right. we see a projected 3.8% in pay. the tech employees are looking for data, scientist and network -- accounting and finance roles and even workers in legal and the each anticipate compensation increases of 3.6%. administrative professional andn health care as well as customer service in call center positions, they should see pay gains of 3.5% in 2017. why is this important. they don't seem like huge raises, but -- we're keeping more of the raises in our pockets. it's welcome news

coming up. after months of waiting, we know who will start at quarterback. broncos announcing that trevor siemian will start against carolina. trevor of course played the first half. and he was 10 of 17 for 122 yards and had one touchdown and one interception. gary kubiak took his time naming a starter. kubiak said yesterday after he's confident trevor is the best fit for the team. >> i think he's earned a right to be our guy, troy. i told the team this morning. you know, i go back and i look at the body of work, and how far he has come and i watch how much he has improved in my opinion and what we're doing, to me he's earned the right to be our starter and so, i'm very proud of him and it's not that the other guys didn't do something. it's about how far trevor has come as a player.
