garcia is on the story in golden where the dogs are in quarantine. you learned the son had been warned about the dogs being aggressive. >> reporter: shaw was issued a warning citation after a neighbor reported that the dogs got loose and were acting aggressively. they are being held in this secure facility where they are also slated to be put down later on this evening. that isom authorities say their owner agreed to after the dogs attacked and killed his mother. >> to go after their owner irk couldn't hardly believe that >> reporter: bonnie was shocked to learn her next door neighbor had been killed by the dogs in her own home. >> this is a dog mauling two, pit bulls >> reporter: police responded 7:00 pm monday after a frantic call of a gruesome attack.

background >> reporter: authorities say the caller, a man in his their 30s, alerted them that the two pitbulls were attacking his mom. >> locking the door, and running through, she's barely conscious >> reporter: deputies found the two dogs on the loose in the home, and the woman critically injured. she died at the scene. her son was taken to swedish medical center where the staff treated and released him for nonlife-threatening injuries. >> i feel really bad junior. i hope he's gonna be okay. >> reporter: neighbors say the dogs spend much of their time behind this pen. >> they were always penned up. they were never running loose. >> okay. never any issues you knew of with the dogs? >> i never had any issues with the dogs. no. they bark a lot. >> reporter: animal control took them to a shelter in golden where they're court ordered under quarantine. >> reporter: and a sheriff's office spokesperson tells us the investigation is ongoing, and

richard shaw was gonna be facing any charges. family friends also told us this afternoon that susan shaw, who was killed by the dogs, allegedly then her husband just died as well last month. so a very tragic story all the way around. >> we did some digging to find out more about pitbull bites in denver. jefferson county had a combined 85, and denver 62. even though pitbulls are banned in denver, 575 have been impounded since 2013. i united airlines employee under arrest accused of stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry from a passenger's luggage. court documents show a woman who flew into dia-a few weeks ago

this grocery store where she was able to call 911. this summer, a new colorado law went into effect that makes a nonfatal strangulation a felony instead of a lesser charge. >> we now have a strangulation bill passed in colorado. the law became effective july 1. we're prosecuting people for the crime of strangulation, which is kneading the breathing of -- impeding the breathing of another person or restricting their airways by grabbing their prosecutors to have another tool in order to make sure that in particular domestic violence perpetrators are most aggressively prosecuted >> reporter: the new law, pretty important, the district attorney attorney says, because a lot of times with domestic violence cases when there's strangulation involved, it's hard to prove that because

as for the suspect, he remains hocked up in summit county. westbound everett closed between santa fe and southbound platte river drive because of this. crews spent the day repairing a water main break. the cause of it still isn't clear. officials say the pipe is 67 years old. they e restore water to businesses later on tonight. drivers need to take a detour around that area until tomorrow afternoon. the goal is met to raise funds for a memorial to honor victims of the aurora theater shooting. the final dollars came quietly from within the community. the memorial will be a place to remember the dozen lives taken by a gunman at the century 16 theater complex in aurora. cbs4's investigator rick

refused to leave the house for hours during a standoff with police. during that time, a half dozen people were escorted out. brown finally emerged. threats prompted the federal government to close several government buildings in colorado and across the country. >> the usda building got anonymous messages yesterday threatening violence. other agencies threatened include the u.s. forest service, and the officials did not detail the threats made but did say they were working with the f.b.i.. the threats spanned connecticut, maryland, west virginia, and north carolina today. colorado is set to get hundreds of thousands of dollars from the federal government to fight the heroin and opioid epidemic. 11 states are being targeted because they have some
