23-year-old jesus carino, while crossing 1st and downing thursday night. he drove about a mile before stopping. >> he did come to a stop. did make a phone call to 911. reported that he was in a crash, and is waited there for officers to respond >> reporter: investigators believed he had the green light when he hit o'connor in the crosswalk. >> if it's true, it's surprising to me. people talked last night about how fastidious she was about obedience to traffic signals. >> reporter: she was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. carino is under investigation for vehicular homicide and dui. while many in the denver post newsroom continue to mourn the loss of their colleague and friend, flowers at her desk serve at a reminder of the legacy she leaves behind. >> she was very kind and curious and lovely. but she always got the work done in a very compassionate way.

>> reporter: o'connor joined the denver post in july of 2004. a lot of people here tell me she loved to read, and often contributed her own book reviews to the paper. we have an update on an officer-involved shooting in denver. officers are looking for a man in a home at bryant and bales yesterday. sent escaped through a window. three officers ended up tackling him. the suspect tried officers' guns. the gun discharged, and an officer shot and killed the suspect. he has not been identified. three officers were injured but are expected to recover. deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man in an adams county neighborhood. the body was found this morning not far from pecos. the shooting is connected to a home invasion of a marijuana grow house in that area. a person inside shot one of the suspects who was trying

body was discovered two blocks away. >> they picked up a lot of information, bagged it all up. the body was over there. >> reporter: the names of those involved have not been released. tonight we have learned adams county is investigating a second homicide scene in that neighborhood. no word on whether the two deaths are related. the latest in the paige birgfeld murder trial. closing arguments set foror junction. birgfeld went missing in 2007. her body wasn't discovered until six years later. lester jones is charged with first degree murder and kidnapping. on the stand today an expert witness for his defense team testified there should be real doubts about the prosecution's case. >> reporter: we have heard weeks of witness testimony in this murder trial. the defense

>> reporter: the v.a. completed an internal investigation into what went wrong here more than a year ago. but it has refused repeatedly to release thousands of pages of findings and documentation, even to congress. reporting on the debacle here for nearly aad the hospital is four years overdue and a billion dollars overbudget. it was to be completed in 2014 at a cost of $580 million. it won't be done until 2018 at a cost of $1.7 billion. there have been countless lawsuits, hearings, and a walkout by workers. under fire from both sides of the aisle, the v.a. conducted a comprehensive internal investigation promising to share the results with congress. when it was finished, the v.a.

the house veterans affairs committee with a 31-page redacted summary which is it barred them from making public. now at the urging of congressman mike kaufman, the committee is voting to subpoena the v.a.'s full report. >> the tax payers have a right to know. veterans have a right to know. and congress has to know! it's constitutional oversight responsibility. we're asked to appropriate this money, and to account to of the united states. there is no explanation. no credible explanation how a billion dollars in taxpayer money was wasted without a single individual being fired. how does that happen? >> reporter: he suspects the investigation uncovered corruption and possible criminal wrongdoing and the v.a. is trying to cover it up. the committee she a member of will vote next week to issue the

a major setback for space exploration after an explosion in florida. the explosion was felt for miles and destroyed an expensive satellite. >> reporter: a test firing for spacex's falcon 9 rocket ended in a disastrous explosion at cape canaveral. it was hauling an israeli communication satellite. facebook planned to use it to expand internet access in africa. >> it was a major loss for the

that was a $195 million satellite. that was destroyed. >> reporter: spacex released a statement saying there was an anomaly on the pad. the blast was felt miles away, and billose of smoke poured into the sky. the falcon 9 has experienced problems before. one rocket exploded shortly after lift off in 2015 company is a critical partner for nasa. it carries supplies and equipment to the iss. >> nasa has a $26 billion contract with spacex for cargo to the space station. >> reporter: they are designed to transported humans into space, and those flights were scheduled for next year.
