>> near 70th and pecos. jeff todd, do we know how that man died? >> reporter: karen, we do. we are told it is a stabbing. take a look. the investigators have left in the past few minutes a big black tarp has been put up in the front of the store. we are told this was a brutal stabbing. but also, the suspect is in custody because he never left the store. >> the crime lab is behind us here. they will be processing the scene for as long as it takes to process all the evidence possible. >> reporter: it was 5:00 thursday evening when deputies were called to this shopping center near 22 and pecos.

party into custody. >> reporter: sources tell cbs4, the suspect never left the scene. he stayed inside the store and surveillance cameras were rolling helping deputies pinpoint that suspect to the crime. the sheriff's office wouldn't say if the suspect or victim were customers or employees of the store. but they do believe this is an isolated incident. >> we want to make sure everybody knows that there's no public safety issue. >> reporter: for an hour, the massive shopping center was shut down interviewed everyone. whether they saw the crime or not. >> anybody could be a potential witness. even if it is not sight, it could be sound. they may have walked by and noticed something. and, it may become important later in the investigation. >> reporter: we still don't know who the victim or the suspect were or their ties to this family dollar store. or even a motive. we are hopeing to get some information tomorrow. live in adams county, jeff todd, cbs4 news. a suspected drunk driver

reporter as she crosses the street. 60-year-old colleen o'connor was struck. she had worked at the denver post 12 years. her coworkers said her work stood out. >> she always wrote beautiful accurate stories. >> investigators think o'connor was crossing on a red light but they who hit her was drunk. 22-year-old jesus corino is facing charges of dui and vehicular homicide. questioning the expertise of a dna expert who has testified in several high profile cases all over the country. in a trial in denver, he has been discredited. our karen morfitt is live at the courthouse. he has been in the trials of

>> reporter: just to name a few. always, he testified as an expert in those cases. it is almost expected that his qualifications would be called into question. but he calls what happened on the stand here in denver ludicrous and says he has the paperwork to prove he is an expert. forensic scientist eichlan have been on several high profile cases. >> they want the throw mud at you. >> reporter: they are defending their reputation. >> he was offered as a dna expert. he admitted in the first round of questioning from my prosecutor he had never done this work. >> reporter: denver da mitch

morfitt, cbs4 news. copter 4 flies over the site of a natural gas explosion in winter park. it happened in a home on fur drive. there was a flash fire. but the flames did not spread. one person was seriously injured. flown to the university hospital burn unit. the cause of the blast is being investigated. developing tonight, a major failure for spacex. the private company who hopes to launch people into space, the falcon 9 the launch pad today. with the explosion, another major setback for spacex and spread internet access to parts of the world unconnected. an explosion ripped through the upper portion. it collapsed in flames.

it was going to launch a satellite for facebook providing internet access to large parts of africa. zuckerberg says i'm disappointed to hear that spacex's launch failure destroyed our satellite that would have provided connective to so many entrepreneurs and others across the continent. he didn't seem angry for long posting pictures of a wildlife tour about two hours later. spacex has had 25 successful launches since 2010. dramatic setbacks. they have lost rockets trying to land them and had a previous explosion during a launch in 2015. >> spacex plans to talk about a mission to mars next month, but today's explosion means more scrutiny about space travel. an suv barreled into the impressive cleaners at hampden

cbs4 news. a bizarre and scary developing story in south carolina tonight where there are more reports of a clown trying to lure kids into the woods. today, a parent called 911 to report that her daughter saw a clown lurking in the woods near a middle school. it's the fourth sighting in that area. in one case, the clown was holding a laser and cash to attract the children. all eyes are on hurricane hee florida's gulf coast tonight. it is gaining strength at 80 miles an hour. it is expected to make landfall late tonight or early tomorrow morning. they are calling it a life threatening situation. we could see severe storms here tomorrow. >> let's get a check at our weather. >> we could have one more day of severe storms before it settles out for the holiday weekend. ahead. let's take a look at what we had at 5:00 this afternoon. watch this little blossom right here near thornton.

plains. still a little moisture going on, especially down there in park county. there is more moisture to come our way. an that's the chance of severe storms tomorrow. you can see how the moisture really pushes into this state. pushes right on up into colorado in the south. we have the strongest thunderstorms. then look along the border. more severe weather for the eastern plains of colorado. then on saturday, we do have a couple of scattered showers an thunderstorms that will push through the area afternoon. not very many. then sunday, you can see not much coming into denver. here is 6:00 around the edges. we have storms. really, that is about it. high pressure holding in our area. that will keep this front back the next couple of days but it will keep this moisture flow going over colorado and the real moisture right here as hurricane hermine. 80 miles an hour winds northeast at 14. and take a look at this. here is the eye. just now crossing land. so, it is now making landfall

a disparody that has the denver teacher's union concerned. >> why does jeffco have 0 and we have 47? and, they don't have a good answer for that. and my answer is there's something wrong with the evaluation system. >> i thought this truth would jolt us a bit. >> reporter: mike johnston sponsored the teacher effectiveness law. >> they have zero effect. any parent with more than one teacher knows like any profession, some are great, some are decent, some are improving. it is not as if yo that putting out data saying everybody is perfect. >> reporter: teachers rated less than effective two years in a row and stripped of tenure are back in classrooms. in denver and other districts. >> they are back with us. back with us without that tenured status. >> if i were a principle, i would want to know who else is in the applicant pool.
