to a tropical storm but it was a category 1 storm when it brought 80 miles per hour winds on shore. it was the first hurricane to hit florida in 11 years. >> reporter: hurricane hermine plum led florida's panhandle. late last night people tried board walk was indated with water. >> i'm here to play. >> this is life threatening. >> earlier in the day the state's governor warned people to take the storm seriously as hermine shredded up roads and eroded beaches. in the hard hit down of apalachicola some stocked up on knews. >> it's nerve wracking.

>> reporter: others boarded up their business and got out for the safety of our employees and business, we are closing up. >> reporter: in low lying areas hundreds of residents were told to evacuate ahead of the storm. >> my wife wants to get her valuables out and stuff from her mother that is irreplaceable. >> reporter: some chose to ride it out. >> my property will likely not flood but my neighbors around me will. >> reporter: hit with a hurricane in a decade. residents of hawaii's big island are dealing with aftermath of madeline. 0. >> the storm has passed but safety measures have to stay in place. hurricane lester, a category 3 storm is on track to affect the islands this weekend.
