shooting spree appears in court. james draper opened fire on cars and people in four separate locations in aurora and denver sunday. she considered a person of interest in a murder investigation after a woman was found shot to death in her apartment in aurora. >> we had extensive coverage of that crime spree over the weekend. there will be a vigil tonight for the 29-year-old mother killed at the apartment >> why did such a kind heart the, beautiful souled person have to get such an untimely end? >> reporter: he misses his friend, ashley ross draper. he started this go fund me page to help raise the children she leaves behind. she was found shot to death in her aurora apartment last saturday. >> the kids are struggling. they want to go home. they can't accept the news. they're having trouble just accepting and understanding what happened to

draper. police arrested the 33-year-old sunday. they say he went on a crime spree, carjacked a woman, and went on a joyride in aurora, targeting innocent bystanders and even police. police believe he was under the influence of something. cordova says she not surprised by the crime spree given what ashley would share with him about marriage. >> she used to talk about how he was a very controlling person, she struggled with staying in the marriage at one point. to honor her commitment, it's the kind of person she was. she was loyal. >> reporter: today ashley's family went to court to see draper who appeared on charges related to the shooting and car chase. >> draper's wond was set today at $300,000. the vigil for his wife starts at 7:00.

been to be evacuated from this wildfire in grant county. it is -- grand county. it is burning west of kremlin. matt kroschel is providing updates on the scene from twitter and facebook.s >> reporter: you can see the hotshot crews in there using chainsaws to cut down some of the trees that they torched yesterday as up. today they say things could have been a lot worse. this fire started yesterday afternoon around noon, strong wind pushed it. helicopters called in to attack the flames. about 75 firefighters also here working on the ground. 12 homes have been evacuated. six of them nearly lost yesterday we're told. residents say the fast response kept that from happening. >> came in about noon yesterday, and we were happy to see the emergency vehicles come

people pretty quickly. it was nice to see all that support coming in. >> reporter: those strong winds have kept up here today. we're feeling that right now. a little bit of rain just came through the area with that storm. still watching some of the smoke here. they feel like they have this thing about 35% contained. the helicopter has been grounded for now, and they might be back up tomorrow morning if they need those resources. the investigation in the area, they do have a few leads. matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain newsroom. an update on the death of a woman in denver's montbelo neighborhood. police were investigating a possible suspicious death. the woman's husband, a pastedor at a nearby church, was taken into custody. police said the death was not considered suspicious. we have learned an internal

american drivers illegally passed school buses 13 million times last year. roughly eight kids a year are killed by drivers who ignore stop signs. >> right down the road. >> reporter: donald mayor's daughter gabby was killed after getting off her school bus in nolan arenado 2010. the 71-year-old driver was never charged. mayor is pushing state lawmakers to allow school bus cameras to keep student it's preventible and it's not a tragedy because we know it's gonna happen again. >> reporter: at least 15 states allow cameras to be mounted outside school buses to record motorists illegally passing. austin added those cameras last january in. four month, they sent citations to 6 somsz motorists. >> shocking. that's a lot of

the board has decided to lift a ban on selling soda in high schools and will leave that up to the local districts. the statewide policy continues to ban certain beverages in after-school activity, and there is a ban on soda in middle and elementary schools. a new warning for parent was illnesses. this week is asthma peak week. six million teenagers and children in this country have asthma. a study found an increase an increase in asthma pediatric attacks. levels of germs and irritants are high for school kids and teams can get lax about using medications. >> that triggers a lot of
